@@AllySafety I attend courses, I teach or train in industry or academia, write articles in journals, plus I take in interns to help out in IH, especially in examination and testing of LEV systems. Normal ho hum stuff.

The thing I miss about that AIHA IH definition is the "art," I do like the addition of the "confirmation," and, I would also say, IH isn't just focused on workers but also the public at large - for instance, I visit homeowners in their residences to conduct IAQ assessments ... yes, I like the new background!

This is kind of long but I typically answer the question of what is an industrial hygienist by asking "You know a dental hygienist does, correct? "yes' they respond ... " Well I keep the teeth of industry clean by going in to industrial plant and cleaning in the cracks and crevices". and then go on to relate it to chemical/substance exposure, safety and OSHA.

How to become certified Industrial Hygienist?

A lot of people get degrees or master degrees in IH but you can also get into the field without a specialized degree starting with being an IH tech and learning how to sample. Start with simple sampling like noise and direct reading instruments and work under a CIH to see if you’d like to pursue the field further. You can also take online classes and start working towards certification if you think it’s the direction you’re ready for!

I'm becoming interested in IH, but the pathway a bit confusing. Currently registered in IH technician certificate program to get my foot in the door at entry level. How's finding a job with no experience at all, is an internship recommended? I currently hold a bachelor and master in Biology from previous pre-med plans. My goal is the CIH

Hi, I think with your background you should be able to get a position at a technician level which is how all pretty much start! I’d look for large consulting firms first because they will most-likely have you working under a CIH who will help you learn what you need to know and hopefully help you to get the experience to take and pass the CIH!

You could easily apply for an entry level IH position. Look at consulting firms and federal government.

Yeah, it can be a great career. There can be certain specialties and areas of expertise that can help boost overall income as well. The BCSP salary survey includes some good info for IH’s and is worth checking out to see more about potential income.

As in industrial hygienist, how much of the career involves paperwork versus field work? Is it a good balance?

In my case, I still do about 50% field work, 50% meetings and reporting because I like getting out in the field and talking to people. Other IH’s I know get more into management and tend to direct IH techs who do the sampling, meaning they spend more time in the office and in meetings than in the field. Each position is unique and you can often hear your career towards what you like. Any other IH’s out there want to weigh in with your perspective?
