Hey everyone, thanks for watching! I usually don’t do videos this long but taking the CIH exam is just such a process and I really would’ve appreciated a video like this back when I was taking it. Hopefully it helps you! Good luck!
This information is gold for those struggling through exam prep themselves. This includes helpful tips & people can sympathize & relate to the struggle.
Glad you thought so! I don’t usually do videos this long but I felt like something like this would’ve been really helpful for me when I was taking the CIH.
I am aiming for Fall 2024. Been wanting this CIH for decades but only seriously started a few years ago...during which lay-offs disrupted plans. I did Bowen twice, practice questions once (but your video will have me doing that again because it seemed to be quite helpful), and a local AIHA section CIH prep course currently. I found this video at a great time to motivate myself.
Oh that’s exciting! Good luck! I know I had to make myself do the practice tests because I never felt fully ready but they were the best for preparing for the test.
I'm taking it Fall 2024 also. Found this video a great help. I'm starting studying 5.5 months ahead of the exam, so I hope thats enough. I remember when I took the GRE to get into grad school for my IH MS program, I took a GRE test exam ahead of time and it really helped so I knew where my weaknesses were ahead of time and what to really focus on. Good luck to us both!
Thank you so much for this video. I applied to take the exam and the review board said I’m about 3 or 4 classes short of higher STEM courses. Over the past couple years I have taken and passed the ASP, CSP and OHST. Im thinking about taking an IH certificate through Tulane to help with the courses I’m missing and also strengthen my weaknesses. Also appreciate the tip about Bowen as a prep. I also took the U of Mich IH prep. Thought it was very helpful!
Oh interesting, you have the same credentials from BCSP as I did going into the exam as well as the Michigan prep course. The Tulane certificate would probably be really helpful. Do they do a course in ventilation? The ventilation questions are a big portion of the exam so being really comfortable with those types of problems is really helpful. Glad the video was helpful! Best of luck! 🍀
@Ally Safety Yes, so I’m order to complete the graduate certificate I have to take the following courses: - Survey of Environmental Health (3) - Principles of Toxicology (3) - Principles of Industrial Hygiene (3) Also, select 6 credits from: - Radiological Health (3) - Occupational Health (3) - Physical Agents & Ergonomic Hazards in the Workplace (3) - Industrial Ventilation & Chemical Hazard Control (3) - Air Sampling & Analysis* (3) I figured I would select radiological health as I have very little experience with it and ventilation as you said it makes up a larger portion of the exam.
Hey Rachel! I came across your videos while searching out some tips for how to start the prepping process! I was wondering if your cheat sheets for radiation are available anywhere else? They don’t seem to be opening here.
Hi Rachel! How would you advise studying for the exam as someone who doesn’t have any experience or knowledge? Basically, how would you learn everything for the first time? I have one book so far (The Occupational Environment). Where would you start to learn about industrial hygiene? I hope to sit for the exam in about 4 years
Hi! Good question. If I were in your shoes, I would probably start with a taking some online courses or a test prep course, maybe Bowen EHS. That will give a good introduction to the principals along with getting the brown book I mention in the video. Those are gonna be a bit more user-friendly to start. 🙂
Hi Rachael, Great presentation. I am currently a CSP. I have a BS in Geology and Math and MS in Environmental Engineering but never took a course in Toxicology or IH. What organization can you recommend for taking these courses to close this gap other than a university?
Hi, I was thinking about looking into the industrial hygienist field. My question is, does it require a lot of chemistry? As in is chemistry knowledge essential for this job? I was looking into an environmental health degree and it required some chemistry courses, and I have found chemistry to be difficult and struggle in it. Thanks!
It does require a lot of chemistry! Not sure how interested you are in IH or environmental but I struggled in chemistry initially in college and eventually found a good tutor and re-learned the basics. It really helped!
Thanks, and aw that’s unfortunate. What about an occupational health a safety specialist, safety specialist, coordinator, officer, technician? Would those require as much chemistry knowledge? They sound more business focused to me.
Yeah, I got the OHST early in my career although I don’t maintain it any more. That’s a great one and is more limited on the amount of chemistry and types of problems you need to solve.
How to get qualified to write exam? I have Msc engineering degree and more than 5 yrs professional experience in EHS. But I am unable to meet 180 academic hiurs or 240 PD hours. Could you advise how to prepare for this challenge
Hi, what I did when I wasn't sure how my course work would quality is I reached out to ABIH and asked what courses I could use towards to application. They took a little while to respond but were really helpful! I'd try them first because they have the most information.
