One of my favorite forms of socializing is what I call 'reciprocal infodumping,' where we basically take turns monologuing on our interests, and it's also one of my favorite things about being friends with other ND people. It feels so good to be trusted to receive their expertise and enthusiasm, it feels so good to express my own thoughts and excitement about my interests and have that be welcomed and recieved, AND I learn so much cool stuff. Win-win-win.
Now if I could infodump back that would be the real win (I’m working on socializing with people who give me room to reciprocate by sharing my interests and it’s definitely helping)
@@theromanverse2138 Running into people who love to info dumping is wonderful. Like, 9 times out of 10, I don’t know people well enough to say anything meaningful, and if it’s not meaningful why bother with the effort of talking at all? When people just go off and let their interest bleed out and touch other topics freely, I’m able to find more points of decision or even new interests. Makes communication much easier when you know the person decently, apposed to people just pretending to be something or another instead of just existing as who they are.
When they do this 6h a day for years and force you to answer to each point it's quite annoying sometimes tho, but most of the time it's interesting so diz great
I fondly remember in high school when my mom would pick me up after school I'd often infodump about whatever my current hyperfixation was the entire half hour home. She always faithfully listened to me and tried to remember the things I said in case I mentioned them later. 💜
Infodumping is tied to enthusiasm, and I LOVE when people are enthusiastic about topics that interest them!! That's why I work in libraries and in schools! It's energizing to learn new things!
I love it when my best friend infodumps! I'm really quiet and I love having conversations in which I'm not expected to say much and I also love learning new things and who knows more about a subject if not someone who's hiperfixating on it?
It also reminds me of The Incredibles. When Syndrome says, "You sly dog. You got me monologuing!" 😂 🦸🏼♀️ 🫶🏼 It can feel vulnerable for me to info dump. Thanks for holding space for your son's monologues and being down for the pop quizzes. That just makes me so happy to hear!
I once had a Russian Uber driver info dump on me allllllll about the electoral college way back in 2015. He insisted that we abolish it and he was so right. He taught me a ton about how our electoral system works, it was amazing!
@@ndb_1982 I don't understand what you mean, I am sorry. I am explaining how a hyperfixated person info dumped to me and it was absolutely fascinating and I learned a lot.
Yeahhh as a fellow autistic i love these unexpected conversations. Im like "wow" diving into someones world. It feels good to know theres other obsessive passionate beings out there ranting 😂
@@etcwhatever His depth of knowledge about the democratic process in the US was astounding, he had to turn around at one point because we were both so engrossed by the conversation he had missed the drop off point!!
My teenage daughter chose me exclusively as the one she tells ALL the things to. I am so humbled by that❤️ I love her so much, I'm interested in her interest because i care about her and what she thinks about. She can go on and on...I love it. She's so smiley too😅
Love this kind of educational snapshot. Thanks Toren and team! When i found the neurodivergent community online, i finally realized* that infodumping is my way of expressing unfiltered joy. Its basically me saying, "I am hyped about you as a trusted person and i am hyped about this topic ive been learning about and... here. we. GOOO!" Now i can better gauge** who might be open to my info dumps and when its gonna be received in an accepting way. Game changer! *In my thirties **Though still not with 100% accuracy 😆
I love receiving an infodump! It gives me new information to catalog and it gjves them an interested listener who usually remembers to maintain the meat mech!
@@mariposavioleta9007 You deserve better people in your life. Until you can find kinder souls in your life that are willing to listen irl, why not infofump here? I can infodump quite often, myself, so I personally don't find it weird.
I love this. I had two friends who did this. I noticed that they need to finish what they said or else they can get stressed. Because it can be very long and I can't focus that long I explained I need to do something else and I will not hear every thing. They didn't mind as long as they can finish what they said. I love that we had this friendship so we can be ourself without any judgement.
I infodump a lot on my favorite video games, shows, and films, as well as the maladaptive daydream-fueled inner "world" I built for ambitious fanfic ideas. I'm nearing 30, and admittedly STILL trying my best to figure out a balance between my responsibilities and the daydreaming/hyperfixating. It's still a MAJOR work in progress, because of the MADD, but my nesting partner (who's also pretty sure he has some sort of attention disorder) is so incredibly patient. I am so grateful for him... 🥰
Infodumping is a wonderful way you can share your love with many words. Those words mean that you care, and how much more fun is when you can reciprocate that with another!
I love when peopl info dump! It's knowledge and even better when mutual interest is there. I info dump about Michael Jackson,DnD,my favorite characters, and sometimes trees.
I love what you called an info dump because it’s a fast way to learn detailed researched information and it sparks interesting conversation. I think of it as hyper focus and it’s a wonderful state of flow when you get involved in something loved. I wish there was more of it because it’s excellent aged learning if both people are curious very little of the subject can remain unexplored. I think it’s a positive thing , and it’s wonderful if you find people to talk to who think like this. It adds joy to my life.
@@LornaBaker-cw7qx oh, where do I start? So, TallyHall is a band that consists of 5 members that all wear different color ties: Rob Cantor (yellow tie; guitarist), Joe Hawley (other guitarist; red tie), Ross Federman (grey tie, drummer since the former one, Steve Gallagher quit in 2004), Zubin Sedghi (bassist, blue tie), and Andrew Horowitz (keyboardist; green tie), there’s also an orange tie/honorary member Bora Karaca. The band was formed in 2002 and they made their first album: “Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum” (which is an actual place founded by Marvin Yagoda who unfortunately is no longer with us, in Ann Arbor Michigan; to be more specific, Farmington Hills, filled with lots of interesting and sometimes morbid machinery; I actually got to go to the place and I’ve gotta say, the 7 hour drive was worth it!) The album was re-released on April Fools Day of 2008 and contains these tracks (in order): Good Day Greener Welcome to TallyHall Taken for a Ride The bidding Be Born Banana Man Just Apathy Spring and a Storm Two Wuv Haiku The Whole World and You 13/ Ruler of Everything Hidden in the sand (Plus 2 bonus tracks Mucka Blucka and Dream) The band has released another album in 2011 titled “Good and Evil” which features a less nonsensical tone and dives into deeper themes such as death and abuse; I don’t really have a Segway into this so I’ll just list the songs haha (yes, in order) Never Meant to Know & You & Me Cannibal Who You Are Sacred Beast Hymn for a Scarecrow A Lady The Trap Turn the Lights Off Misery Fell Out in the Twilight You Fate of the Stars In the same year as the release of G&E, The band is currently on an indefinite hiatus since 2011, but they have a comedy show that’s on YT called TallyHalls internet Show (T.H.I.S for short), which is where you can see more of Bora and by more I mean 15 seconds. After the hiatus, they all went their separate ways with Zubin and Ross going back to college and earning PHDs (Zubin’s a doctor and Ross is a scientist) Rob makes music for Disney Jr. And he also made a solo album called “Not a Trampoline” along with something that resembles a musical called “Mr. President, there’s an asteroid headed directly for the Earth: the musical!” He is also responsible for the Shia Labeouf musical that got real popular in 2015 and he and Bora recently joined a musical project called “White Collar Prison” where Rob plays a character and boras on electric guitar. Andrew still makes music and has made his solo debut with “Sketches 3D” and “Etudes”, although he goes under the name edu. (Pronounced ee-doo) Joe has also written solo projects as well, the most notable being “Hawaii: Part ii” with him going under the pseudonym ミラクルミュージカル (Miracle Musical) the album was released on 12/12/2012 and all the TallyHall members (not Andrew) helped with the album. The track list includes: Introduction to the Snow Isle Unto thyself Black Rainbows White Ball Murders 宇宙ステーションレベル7 (space station level 7) The Mind Electric Labyrinth Time Machine Stranded Lullaby Dream Sweet in Sea Major (And a single: Variations on a cloud; which is confirmed by Joe to be track 0 of the album in an interview) ミラクルミュージカル also did a cover of “Candle on the water” Hawley also wrote a hip-hop comedy album called “Joe Hawley Joe Hawley” Some additional information I didn’t know where to put: *Bora was in a heavy metal/jazz band called Cojum Dip which stopped touring in 2006 *Rob has two unreleased songs called “Cuckoo” and “Country Good” *Technically Banana man was the first TH song, on account of Joe thinking of the idea while in high school at Myrtle Beach *Andrew almost got arrested in an internet show episode *In the place MMMM, the album cover by TallyHall is framed in the building by a machine (if I’m remembering correctly it’s the bartender machine) *Zubin’s the only member without a middle name, I know the others, so here’s that: Andrew David Horowitz Joesph Robert Hawley Ross Stephen Federman Robert Howard Cantor *In a livestream, Will Wood calls himself Rob Cantor (not really a TH fact, but it was funny!) *The backwards message in the song Hidden in the Sand is “Wouldn’t the world be better off if we took nonsense seriously?” Which is a quote said by Marvin Yagoda himself *there was a 12th THIS episode where the band interviewed Marvin and his son, Jeremy about the museum, which is by far my favorite episode, although the last time I checked it was not on YT anymore (also Jeremy owns the place currently) *The Whole World and You was in a crayola commercial *Theres a machine in MMMM; a marriage machine and let’s just say I’m married to Zubin… for about 20 minutes until I read the fine print that after you get 50 feet away from the machine, the marriage expires. *not really a TallyHall fact, but I wrote a story (in the publishing process as of now) and I managed to slip in a whole paragraph about Marvin’s and TallyHall, lol *Rob is Jewish and yes, he did have a bar-mitzvah (idk how the heck I found this out) *the fan tie color is purple, along with Coz Baldwin; the maker of the TallyHall fan website named after the last (not bonus) track in Marvin’s *Dr. Marvins s3x change machine exists, it’s just REALLY high in the building so that children don’t, um, start asking questions But yeah, I think that’s all I have to- wait.. hold on, I didn’t even say Marvin’s speech in Welcome to TallyHall AND how he greeted people who came to MMMM: “Welcome to Marvins Marvelous Mechanical Museum, known from coast to coast like butter and toast. From headlines to bedlines, schoolrooms to poolrooms, no other place in the contiguous United States or other environments of the world, welcome!” Thanks for letting me share, enjoy!
@@MinaWalker Admittedly took screenshots on my phone, since I'm back to my old Fallout kick and wanting to expand some fanfic ideas. That location and the music might be neat to at least reference.
My special interests are crochet, true crime, and costume/fashion design. None of my family or friends like listening when I infodump, but my boyfriend does 😅 I hyperfocus on my crochet or research and I wont do anything else for up to 3 days other than sleep and the occasional snack and drink, and my family gets very annoyed about it, but its cuz they care ❤
I love info dumping. If we're friends I wanna know what you love, what fascinates you. Plus I always learn something new, even if it's completely random and may not serve me in life in any way whatsoever it's just cool to learn things
bro my hobby is growing plants and when i find someone that also grows plants i info dump them harder than anyone has ever been info dumped in history :D
Anyone else get wayyy too excited when they have the chance to infodump? Like my heart starts beating really fast and my thoughts race so much that it's hard to even put together words properly. Like jeez, chill brain, I just wanna explain something I like.
Me explaining One Piece, Jojo’s bizarre adventure, FNAF, Dr.Stone, and Zelda Lore to my poor mother who’s trapped and forced to hear me talk while she’s stuck cooking dinner in the kitchen. Pretty sure she tunes me out though, but it’s just so nice to just talk and talk and talk. 😂
Info dumping, to me, shows passion and enthusiasm... Sometimes these feelings can be contagious as well and create conditions for an enriching conversation! I think this might be a common neurodiverse trait, especially among those who are deep thinkers and/or feelers. Also, find someone with a love of learning and interest in understanding different perspectives and you've got a supportive conversation partner 🙂
You could make taking care of personal hygiene and eating a part of getting ready to have a super successful and effective prep routine you do before a hyperfixation session.
wow. i am having a conversation on discord right NOW that involves this. i want to share my conversation with me and my friend: ME: i also feel very compelled to apologize for the way i've been talking on vc. i can tell that at least several times, i just let my mental racing and infodumping and jumping from topic to topic on things that absolutely cannot be interesting to you, i let that just end up controlling my mouth without being mindful. that is not the way i want our calls to go. i want you to have just as much control of the conversation as i do, but its like.. as you are the only person i talk to on vc, and i feel like you get me more than others do.. i guess i unmask and then become this shitty guy that won't shut up about all the "cool things i just thought of." her: Psst... That's been very intentional on my part. I'm aware that you have limited social outlets right now, and it's been fulfilling and engaging for me to hold that safe space for you to share about the things that interest you. It lets me get to know your authentic self, the things that spark interest, joy, or anger for you. I like getting to know you.
My world has taught me that I can't infodump on anyone and even discussing interests with most people is grounds for mocking so I mostly don't say anything to anyone. If you have someone you feel safe infodumping to, appreciate them!
My daughter always starts with „Did you know…“ and lifting her index finger. 😎 Though she’s almost 15 now, I still find it incredibly cute! I’m a sponge for knowledge, so I very much like it when she is dumping info on me. 😊
Before learning I am autistic and ADHD mid-fourty I felt miserable not beeing able to "just shut up" so people could like me... Now I know why I felt good with the so-called nerds, loved events like sience-slams where people talk about their specific interests very detailed😅 I'd love to find other AuDHDers in real life to share interests.
Whenever I infodump people seem to get mad at me and ignore what I've said, so I've just learned to not speak anymore. Probably for the best. I always say the wrong things.
I don’t do that… Have I told you about the crochet projects I’m doing for Christmas, my favorite band and the books I have planned to read this month?!?!?!?! Have I eaten today? What day is it? Shower? What’s a shower?
How would you suggest a way to kindly show it is time to stop info dumping? Could we say, I really care about what you’re telling me, could we discuss this more at a later time? It’s time to eat, sleep etc.
Yes, say it with a smile and even say you appreciate the info and give a hug...that will let them know you're truly interested and you letting the person know it's alright however we have something else we need to do but we can continue later ❤
i totally agree with all of what the previous people said, but i just wanted to add maybe don't go hug them without asking them first and be completely sure they're truly okay with it(in how far you can), not everyone, especially autistic people like hugs(if you ask about it generally, like for example just ask 'do u like being hugged' or 'are there moments were u like to be hugged' before you ask for an actual hug they might also give you a fully honest answer, i know for me i always say yes to hugs bc i'm masking and i know generally it's often seen as rude if you don't want to etc, but often i actually don't want to hug) :)
i have adhd, i have found that sometimes i'll infodump but then if someone infodumps me i just space out at some point. well to be fair i space out if anyone talks too much in general without any pauses. its like my brain can no longer keep up.
My mam gets A LOT of infodumping from me😂 and our brains don’t work the same way (obviously) hers doesn’t need a lot of informations to process things and mine does need a lot of clear informations to process things. So when I’m infodumping she’s often says things like “why do I need to know that? It won’t bring anything into my life knowing that.” Her brain doesn’t need that much of informations and often doesn’t care about the subject I’m talking about😅 she doesn’t like History, but I really do, and when I’m infodumping about History she’s often like “I don’t like History, why you’re telling me that” (she’s really not interested in History) but I continue anyway😅 she’s wonderful, she always listen to my infodumping even though she’s not interested at all by that subject. Plus when infodumping, I often repeat myself mostly when I feel like her brain got disconnected😅 I love her so much❤️
So one thing that worries me about getting a diagnosis is generally from what I've heard like "officially" is a person always has a special interest. like I do, just that it changes a lot. I've heard other people say they're special interest or hyperfixation changes but not that often. And I know it's already harder to get diagnosed as someone who is biologically female with the lack of research with still have particularly in the female brain with autism let alone the subject as a whole. Ahh I'm just anxious
Hey, I was wondering if toren is your real/given name? I'm not asking you to tell us your real name if it isn't as I understand you probably don't want to share that, but it's a really cool name so I was just curious as to whether you chose it or your parents
Hey I totally get this like I've been accused of being a obnoxious one-sided narcissist..even been screamed at for it till the person realized one this person's autistic two pretty much deaf and 3 doesn't get social cues always .so I've found it beneficial at least for me to say hey sorry for the accidental one-sidedness No Narcissism intended I assure you..and that usually breaks ice adds a bit of a laugh and humor and shows hey autistic and not self absorbed..and then after I say it's all good we cool and how was your day/week ect ..not sure if you think it'll work for you but your welcome to steal it and it takes time your brains not damaged just different and it's not a excuse but a explanation for how cool you are just embrace the quirk and weird lol and I'm just saying this as someone who's been there and I think you and your mom are cool and really like your videos 😊
I do the bouncing up and down on my toes thing. I'm only lately realising how many stims I have. I've always thought it was just me being me, and tried to suppress it, but now I'm allowing myself to just be myself a lot more
