Thanks for the in depth review, Elliot. I'm so tired of physical media releases with gimmicky packaging and marketing. There's no room on my shelves for big boxes filled with nothing so I was never tempted to buy.

The blurb on their BARRY LYNDON set will read, "We have hidden the glass cube somewhere in this box. If you find it you can have it..."

So if you live in the US, it's just a damaged box filled with swag and 1 working disc that you already own, with no special features discs for blade runner. Goodfellas would have it on the movie blu ray which you can't use. The universal ones put everything on the UHD disc.

These seem aimed at the physical movie media equivalent of the kids who buy vinyl records only to display them, or maybe play them on a Crosley. It's a fine line between cynicism and love for film, and these fall on the former half of that line. For what it's worth, these kinds of packages CAN be great as a one-off, but doing them as a stamped-out line really reeks of cash grab, especially with huge titles like these. Pass, pass, and pass again. Edit: And thanks for the video! You spared me having to even wonder. Not looking forward to what a certain nocturnal grains fella has to say about these when they are inevitably sent to him...

I had the same issue with my shipments. I think the idea is cool, but it needs better execution and higher quality.

For that price it should have a little hard cover book included on the making of the film. That in addition to more special features and a full size poster would be worth that price. What are you going to do with several glass paper weights with different titles on them all at once? Not worth it even with the great case artwork in my opinion.

I guess you're not the target customer of these, they're for collectors that buy such editions purely for the packaging. Those that buy 'One-Clicks' of premiums with 3-4 of the same movie inside, often just for the fullslips, with even the cards and booklets being the same (NovaMedia, MantaLab, etc), while some do have different content in each (FilmArena, CineMuseum, Blufans).

The only thing they have going for them is the incredible artwork. The rest of it is quite underwhelming.

Those "Art Cards" are actually called "Publicity Stills" they were photos that were sent to newspapers & magazines to use when reviewing or writing about a film. TV programs were sent EPK's (electronic press kit) a video containing clips & interviews.

I had really bad fomo with these when they were first announced, but I’m so glad I stopped myself from purchasing them

The best version of blade runner to own is the 5 disc blu ray which includes 5 different versions of blade runner incl the workprint!..

These were tempting to pick up as a collector but was put off by the price. Think I dodged a bullet there as I don't think they are worth that premium after seeing this unboxing. Thanks for the video.

I’m glad that I’m not into packaging. I collect movies for the discs themselves, not the cardboard and plastic they come in. I have a couple hundred movies that I bought from Redbox and I just made a simple cover and put in a replacement Blu-ray case. I even have a few Criterion movies that I found at a thrift store that were without a case

In the opinion of this collector, these are a swing and a miss. They are not worth anywhere near the asking price and are very prone to damage. The acetate covers are horrible, and paper weight inside tears everything up. The only set that wasn’t damaged for me was “Goodfellas”. There are omissions in the contents in terms of cuts of the films and supplements. There is no real meat to the extras included in the set. It’s basically just cards. There are no essays or anything other than film quotes and very basic information. Hard pass on any future sets for me.

Was very tempted to import these but just couldn't justify the price.

I’m glad I got the Blade Runner one-it was my favorite film of all time until Everything Everywhere All at Once came along-but probably won’t pick up the rest.

HMV's ebay shop does ship internationally but the shipping costs are quite high and special sales only work if you order inside the UK. I tried using the 2 for 1 promotion for an order to Germany. It didn't work. Thanks for presenting the special editions.

Interesting concept. The artwork is very nice I think they'd do well to offer full size posters

I purchased simply for the beautiful art work box that’s displayed front facing. Blade runner and goodfellas both perfect delivery 😊 They are all simply the best versions of themselves

These are wonderful, actually, but very expensive. I won’t be able to afford them, but this really makes these collectibles stand out. If you put the four of them on a shelf - gorgeous. I know there are a bunch of drawbacks, but wow.

Thanks for a great review. I bought goodfellas from this collection and hadn’t opened my copy so was un aware of the glass block damaging the cardboard. But when I checked I could indeed feel the glass block knocking from side to side so rather disappointed about that. So I won’t order the two that are still available “scarface” and “1917”. Expensive and flawed set.

All I want when I buy a 4K Blu-ray is the best transfer possible.

I really love my 1917 one. The price was fair IMO. It's definitely not my most expensive collector edition movie. I've spent almost $100 on a single movie before. And as a collector, I love it. You are paying for higher quality packaging. I own this movie already on steelbook so I bought this for the packaging which is amazing imo

I picked up the Blade Runner one a couple of weeks ago and I'm very happy with it for the money.

I picked up the Blade Runner one. Fantastic artwork, concept cards are superb, I may frame some and the glass block is decent to display. If they had included the soundtrack then it would have been a lot better value but overall very happy. Not interested in other releases - I think you’ve got to love these movies or be a hardcore collector to buy em all. Also- sad to see scalpers trying to resell this on eBay for up to 5x retail price!

I feel like Blade Runner Manta lab Double Lenticular Steelbook is the best release for this movie!!

I got the GoodFellas set since it’s my favorite movie. But I also got the version with the cover art poster by Matt Ferguson. He’s a very collectible artist and though I have zero plans to sell it, the poster (and the whole set) will appreciate in value so it’s a bit of an investment as well.

You're a lil late with this. I got the Scarface set but they aren't really worth buying over the regular 4K releases. They offer nothing but the Glass paperweight and a few cards. I think my box was damaged in the same way.

These were £37.50 at WBSHOP UK few weeks ago when they did a site wide 25% off promotion. The biggest problem with this set is the case for the discs. If it came in a regular Amaray case with slip cover that would have made it easier for users to access the discs or make the users keep the Amaray and sell the tat on its own later if they change their minds or run out of shelf space.

Solid overview.....and I couldn't agree more. The packaging looks fantastic, but in the end, that's all it is. I was tempted to order these at first, but was quickly reminded of my DVD purchase of The Dirty Harry Ultimate Collection. Inside were the usual art cards, a mini poster, a small book..........and a replica wallet with police badge! Sweet! Time to go stop some crime lol. Stop with the gimmicks guys, give us content.

Hi Elliot, I really enjoy your channel. I purchase 3 of the 4 films (BladeRunner , Goodfellas and Scarface) . You are on point with these deluxe editions. 2 of the three films were received in great condition. Scarface had minor damage due to the glass. The glass can ruin the inside due to the weight of it. Like you, I was disappointed there was no new. content. Yet, there is no old content. Blade runner for example , both 4k and Blu-ray have the same material. Why could they not carry over Blade Runner's 2.5 hour documentary? I made my edition of Blade Runner the ultimate edition by switching one disc to another( Blade Runner ultimate edition supplements disc with the bluray that is inside the edition.). Same thing with Goodfellas. The second disc has the same material as the 4k. This company could not get a documentary for this film. These editions are for movie lovers and they deserve better. Don't get me wrong the swag is nice. But for the price range, they could included a film program or for pages of essays. Yet, bravo for your review. It was right at point., Am I glad I got them ..Yes and No.. They are wonderful to look at on my self. Yet , they need to do better.

An excellent video showcasing these releases Elliot. They certainly look exquisite but are way too exorbitant for what you get IMO. Instead of all the tat, why not include a book with essays and details of how the film was made etc, a soundtrack CD and maybe even a novelisation of the movie.

Warner Bros released in my opinion one of the best Blade Runner editions. A fantastic 5 disc limited edition enclosed inside a Deckard briefcase along with a letter from Ridley Scott, art work folio, a book, hologram block, unicorn miniature and a model of Deckard's vehicle. It was region 1 release only and it was many years ago. Disc 1: The Final Cut Disc 2: Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner Disc 3: Three Complete Archival Versions. Disc 4: Enhancement Archive. Disc 5: Ultra-Rare Pre-Release Workprint.

Seems crazy to me that they don't include posters of the great new box artwork

Thanks for the great content Elliot! Premium edition packaging has been a thing for quite a few years now. There’s a Dark Knight Trilogy HDZETA Steelbook Set that sells for about $1300 opened and even more sealed. A lot of people just recently paid $600 for a new LOTR HDZETA Set with real leather bound boxes. Lots of premium materials and goodies inside. Once I got into the world of premiums, I easily spent over $2000 in my first year and got a little ahead of myself. I’ve significantly pumped the breaks since then. The Film Vault looks like it’s trying to compete with these premium manufacturers (HDZETA, Manta Lab, Blu Fans, and UHD Club does a lot of the digipacks like the one you showcased to us). Definitely some nice releases there, but I’d still prefer going Manta Lab or HDZETA with their exclusive steelbook releases. I’m not sure if you’ve looked into those? The sets are gorgeous. As always, keep up the incredible content man! Always get excited when your videos pop up!

You know if these were a little smaller and had like some essays on the film, these might be more attractive. I don't need a glass block.

I much prefer arrow and second sight limited editions to these film vault versions. The artwork on the boxsets are beautiful though. Also I very rarely see 4k’s going for £10.

If they ever released a fifth element one of these I would be interested in what they would add to it maybe a Multipass?

Why ratings logos? At this rate it should be a sticker or attached to a card?

The only thing with these apart from the price is they will take up a lot of space on your shelves. And as you know lack of space is a killer for us collectors

If you don't already own these movies on 4k, then picking up these sets are a no brainer, I already had scarface buy sold it when thus arrived, I also have blade runner lenti full slip but this film vault edition is really nice to add to the set, the only thing I will say is that they could of included fresh dolby vision transfers for goodfellas, scarface and blade runner just to make it a little more worth the justification of £50, we initially paid £90 for blade runner as our orders had been cancelled twice due to lack of stock, let's hope they don't release four all at the same time on the next lot as £200+ will be ridiculous to secure if there's only 3000 copies of each. My hopes is that they stagger them out similar as they're doing now with The Titans Of Cult series

Thanks for this. I didn't realize these things were so oddly-sized -- there's an industry standard here for these types of limited editions and they really should have stuck to that. I also didn't realize they were so flimsily-made. I was thinking about importing the Blade Runner one but now I'll hold off -- there's no way that thing would survive overseas shipping intact.

My biggest gripe is that there is no cohesion to the choices; they feel like some entrepreneur bros just licensed whatever the studios had on offer.

Good review, mate. These editions look lovely indeed. The new artwork is stunningly beautiful. Love all the illustrations. That being said … from a design perspective I think the File Vault "corporate design" feels a little too much. Way too many printed on logos & age logos (instead of stickers), for my taste. And the printed on content image on the back feels a liitle cheap at the same time. Criterion does a better and more elegant job in this regard for example. From a content perspective a true Ultimate Collectors Set would need way more Special Features on the discs. Also ... added premium elements like a book with behind-the-scenes stories and production notes on how the movies came to be would be crucial for an Ultimate Set me. Second Sight did an excellent job with their Limited Edtion for "Drive" for example. I can't help but feel that these editions look nice, but they are rather made in a way that makes them look more "ultimate" than they actually are.

Wouldn't even pay £5 extra over a regular edition for any of these.

4:17 Especially DPD and Evri, they're the worst of the worst when it comes to delivery handling. (It's worth pointing out both delivery volume and very high time pressure will result in both low quality delivery and aggressive driving style, which I blame the higher up bosses.).

Why couldn’t they just put this artwork on a steelbook, that would have been perfect.

I was tempted by the blade runner box, but I already have an older collector's edition (in a sturdy plastic carrying case)and it has the same stuff in it(but smaller), so naah.

Now those are GREAT Boxsets...and they come in Real Boxes.

I saw these about a month ago. The only one I was really interested in was Bladerunner but it was already sold out.

I picked up the Blade runner one but not bothering with the other 3, the glass paperweight is a bit pointless, they should have put a model of Deckard Vehicle that would be much cooler as for the rest more posters of the artwork and the disc it would have been nice to have a limited steel book with the original artwork. overall definitely not worth £50. Also Goodfellas is one of the worst 4k transfers of all time.

I'm not trying to piss on someone else's hobby here, but to me, these sorts of things are for people with more money than sense; those who collect as an investment rather than for the love of films. I own the 4k's of Blade Runner and 1917 (the two of the four I want for now) and have absolutely no need for showy boxes I don't have room for, and glass paper-weights.. the junk they package along with the films here costs them peanuts to make and they charge several times more for it.. having a regular plastic case on my shelf is showy enough.

I really really wanted that Blade Runner one. But I wasn't able to buy it right away. Now it's out of stock everywhere. Seemed to sell out pretty quickly so maybe they'll do another run at some point.

Amusing really I have purchased all 4 film vault releases and live the other side of the world and all arrived in perfect condition. Though I wished I paid 49 pounds each the total cost I paid was over 450 pounds without postage. On this occasion though I think you are incorrect in saying there not worth the money, I personally think there worth every penny

I think if you don't own the film, then it might be worth while. I have ordered the space odyssey box out October 2023, I don't have it on 4k and I like the 2 posters included. Maybe they've heard your comments.

I love the Blade runner movie but I don't love it enough to pay what they are asking for The best thing about the Blade runner limited edition is the slip cover and the concept art cards (I'm a sucker for concept art)

I completely agree with you on these. I feel like every couple of years we see a new "repackaged" version of these 'classic films', where they reuse pre-existing discs and just put them in new packaging. I personally think the design of the plastic sleeves looks cheap and generic, and the box artwork by itself looks too empty without the film title on it. I couldn't agree more about the extra material in the box also. That glass block is just such a random choice, why not a small film strip with shots from the film on it or something? Capitalise on the original artwork and put it on a poster as you said, film specific prop recreations are kind of cool, but one per set is enough because as you say, what are you going to do with it? A release like these needs a soundtrack and heaps of new extras because as others have said, repackaging preexisting discs just feels like a cash grab. In saying all this, you should absolutely frame the Scarface portraits as if they are family photos though.

Been collecting physical media since 97/98 (With every format comes some sort of over the top “Limited” edition i think Laserdisc started this trend Anchor Bay put out these limited numbered Tin dvd’s that ran $40+ US (in ‘01-‘02) Strange shaped tins (Not Steelbooks) With Blu-Ray Arrow Video changed the game with those original white Collectors editions with the front window (Truly collectors editions) that changed everything then Scream Factory and Vinegar Sydrome pretty much threw out the gauntlet (Everyone followed suit) These are cool but, the cases themselves are way to big/awkward and the price is a bit high for essentially catalog titles (If these were more underground/cult 70’s or 80’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Thriller: A Cruel Picture, Phantasm, Foxy Brown, etc. they would actually have more appeal from a collectors stand point… The idea itself is fantastic but, they should’ve copied VS Limited/Collectors line (Those editions are the bench mark how to do a super HQ limited edition done flawlessly 👍👍👍

Regardless your position on the matter, it’s nice to have at least one Blu Ray, 4K Blu Ray or whatever that looks different to the rest! I have HMV’s VHS Range releases of E.T. and Airplane!, each of which are the film on DVD AND Blu Ray in VHS-style packaging and I have the Laserdisc-style packaging release of Finding Dory, which features the DVD and 2-disc Blu Ray! If everything you had all looked the same, it wouldn’t be as interesting!

Great video: articulate, engaging and refreshingly honest. It's also persuasive. There's little doubt that - at £50 a pop - these boxes just ain't worth the money, given we can pick up the standalone discs for £10 to £15 each. I was very underwhelmed, also my Goodfellas box was really badly damaged!

To me, they're not really worth it. They're beautiful objects but I find them way too expensive for what you get. I mean, twice the price of a criterion for a glass block? I don't really see the point.

Here is my take: Recently, look at City of the Living Dead to be release by Cauldron Films (and already sold out), it contains: 1 uhd, 2 br, 1 cd + special slipcase with artwork (very georgeous), stickers, poster, limited to 3000. Transfer and everything is commissioned by Cauldron films. I think a product like this is worth the 55USD asking price. It feels like a unique product of a cult film. Now when I compare this approach to The Film Vault, I feel this a miss opportunity: why no new transfer? why not all the cuts for Blade Runner? Why not include a CD, a Poster? Why not include the classic 4k/bluray case instead of this cd packaging. It feels like a waste of time and money and, more importantly it feels like a cynic cash grab, just to get a limited something with useless stuffs.

Do any of these play on US players?

If I had the money to spend I would definitely buy Blade Runner, Scarface, and Goodfellas movies. They cost under $100 Aus each. This is way too much to spend. I already own the Blade Runner the Platinum Edition.

I think the artwork is nice especially for Goodfellas but apart from that these are a complete con in my opinion. For the size of the packaging they don’t even come with a nice thick booklet. When I was younger and not so wise I would of probably purchased these and that’s unfortunately who these are targeted at.

Leather bound or steel book with new artwork on the discs, extra features and digital copies included might be worth it. Not these. Great video!

I love the idea of celebrating these films but not including a remastered print seems completely pointless. Or if they had chosen films that have never been released on 4K before, I could see justification. I was actually considering getting this release of Goodfellas because I assumed it was a new mastering (and the existing 4K release isn't great). Once I learned it was the same disc, it was an immediate hard pass. Great and informative video!

That's what used to be called a 'green card' for legal US residents but not citizens. I lived with one of these for a long time.

I was expecting a booklet and something else for that price, and certainly new transfers or extras. I'd say if you've got the extra money and you adore these films and are a completist, then this could be interesting. Otherwise, hell no!

I agree that a poster using that nice new artwork would be a way better idea (Arrow does that in much cheaper editions), but you'd still have a poster folded 8 times to fit inside. That's OK for a freebie in a 20-25 pounds edition, not in one twice that price. The glass block is just silly.

I stick to collecting steelbooks

Instead of stills, why not have international poster artwork for the film as artcards? Or license fan art to be included on the set and have art from fans be included on an official release of their favourite film? That would be awesome.

The artwork for Blade Runner is especially sexy.... but there are far too many sexy editions of Blade Runner to tempt me into buying this one (hell, alright, maybe i will if they haven’t sold out by the end of the year), and the other three sets hold far less interest to me

They’ll get my business if they sell me a bundle if the packages on offer are thematically consistent and not the shotgun, ebay-lot-optimization-algorithm-reappropriating approach of the columbia box sets.

Blade Runner might have been the only one of these to interest me. But I already have three different packages of the film, including the version with five different versions of the film. These packages are just rip-off prices for a few crap physical extras. A glass block? Wtf? I’d want new on the disc extras and a good booklet, maybe a decent poster. Who’s idea was this? Forget it.

Anyone or any company that ships anything needs to package everything knowing that the shipper is going to act like a 500 pound gorilla (227 kilos?) and toss it around, stomp on it, sit on it, and abuse it in any way. If they cannot ship it safely then everything else they do is pointless. Air tight, wrapped in bubble, in a box in a box with plenty of padding. I'm sure Film Vault's buyers would pay an extra couple of bucks to have it properly packaged.
