What is Japan's "Video Game Ambassador?" | The Most Influential Japanese Game of All Time

Japanese game developers have contributed hundreds, thousands of important and influential video games over the decades that have helped shape gaming in their country and the world...for some people, "video games" is synonymous with "Japan." However, if you had to choose just one single title to best represent Japan's part in the history of video games, which one would you choose? I give my answer here, and in my opinion it's kind of a no-brainer...and maybe a little bit boring, but it's pretty hard to argue against.
This video could very easily be an hour long or more, but I was asked to keep it to around two minutes and to not go over three, since this video is a small part of a larger collaboration with ‪@st1ka‬ on RU-vid with his "80 Games Around the World" video project. Man, he's so clever, why can't I think of cool ideas like that? Maybe I'll try to do some kind of video essay type video talking about Japan's most influential games or something...
Anyway, I hope you'll check it out: • How different Cultures...

A majority of gameplay was captured on real hardware using the Elgato HD60 S+ and video/audio was edited using Davinci Resolve Studio 18.
Music is from Gensou Suikoden II (Konami, PS1) and Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, Famicom).
Thank you for watching!

You forgot Sony. The PlayStation was a big step up for people who were kids playing Nintendo.

It's hard to go wrong with the original "Super Mario Bros." in my opinion, especially when despite the popularity of the NES and SMB, video games were still considered pretty "nerdy". I feel like FF7 and FF8 are the ambassador games for RPGs and anime, with them being a "gateway drug" the same way Mario and Pokémon are for non-gamers. Hard to go wrong with Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, FF7 and FF8, and SoulsBorne as Japanese video game ambassadors, at least in my eyes.

The vast majority of Japanese made software big or small is infinitely more appealing than most western AAA software made today.
@DonnyKirkMusic
I would say, yeah, Namco and Nintendo defined the part of Japanese gaming that was approachable, simple but with lots of depth, and had "character". The thing is that it only defined that part of it and there are so many moods that Japanese games can go through or put you through, but I do feel like these are the types of games that aged the best from the 80s.

Lol. If it wasn't Nintendo either Sega or Bill Gates would've saved gaming. The MSX was super popular in Japan and had most titles that were on the NES. Sega had great content too.
@st1ka
Once again, thank you so much for your segment, my dude. It was perfect :D
@dilbertfish
Space Invaders in terms of importance and Pac-Man for purity of gameplay. Mario is also a great choice.
@jamesrussell2936
Yeah, you're right, Mario 1 is the most influential Japanese game. But the most influential of all time is Tetris.
@japangamejunk
Unfortunately people outside Japan probably don't know the real most impactful games, as these are the games that then were inspiring to console developers to develop the ones that became famous abroad. The Legend of Zelda series, for example, owes so much to the often misunderstood "Hydlide" on earlier 8-bit computers. But even that game is well known elsewhere and most examples would be very obtuse to the west. I usually make a monthly trip to the iconic retro computer shop BEEP in Akihabara and each time I tend to find an early game that seems to have been almost like an early version of a later respected game.

Mario, Zelda (to this very day), Dragon Quest, Pokémon

Haven't watched it, but i see the thumbnail and "japan's most influential game" and it points at final fantasy 7 and it makes me so happy
@JJMcCullough
Your videos and editing are great! Keep it up man!
@gametroopers4727
That thumbnail is such a swerve! The funny thing is the Final Fantasy franchise is probably my pick as someone from the West as it was what introduced me to Japanese gaming at a larger scale.
@sherekhangamedev
I was thinking the same before you announce it.
@kylestyle5693
Nice editing!

Love the way the Street Fighter announcer says "Japan." Enjoyed your segment for Stika's video, good work.
@stripedhyenuh
Who's the character between Cloud, Crono and Link? I thought it was Estelle Bright from Trails In The Sky but hard to tell with the small thumbnail size.
