This was the first video I've seen from you and I'm from germany without great english skills. But the way you've explained this topic was so well done that I really could easily follow you the whole video through. Thank you! :)
Surprisingly well explained, I'm a medical student interested in endocrinology and you managed to explain the concept of leptin in a very simple way. I personally would have also explained ghrelin as they work together and recommend anyone interested to look this hormone up, most people who are obese have either their leptin receptor damaged or their ghrelin levels altered.
I must say your videos are great. There are two things that make them great. First and foremost the information. You break things down in a way that it is easy to understand. Second, they get to the point. There are other videos out there that provide great information but the person delivering the message takes 15 minutes to provide the same information that you do in five. I love your videos and share them often. Thanks for all you do, you have helped me a lot.
Thanks to Dr Berg I have gone from clean eating to healthy Keto with amazing health results, losing weight and not getting those food cravings after dinner anymore. I cut out rice, white potato and ALL processed carbs replacing instead with a variety of Omega 3 fat rich proteins like fish, red meat, chicken, pork, eggs, veg and salads. Intermittent fasting for me now consists of skipping breakfast and fasting 16-18 hours from after dinner to next day lunch. I couldn't believe how easy it was because eating more natural healthy foods and olive oil stopped my cravings completely. Electrolytes were/are also important to keep me energized and I do drink a couple of black teas and coffee each day but have cut out snacking which is important. Sometimes adding cream is ok if i feel like it as it doesn't break a fast. Our society has been misled for decades about the low fat diet...it's been replaced it with sugary carbs!
Exposure to water damaged buildings (mycotoxins, mold, CIRS) creates major issues with leptin leading to leptin resistance. This is a huge topic that gets swept under the rug, but 80% of buildings have water damage and is not properly addressed. 25% of the population have a defect in a particular hla gene that makes them more susceptible to chronic inflammatory issues and damage when exposed to mold/mycotoxins. If someone has chronic health issues that aren't resolving, it could be due to mold exposure (often hidden between walls)
Your whiteboards always remind me of school lessons. But I rarely can remember any teachers getting the subject across so well then you do. Great job as always!
Dr.Berg, I recently watched a video talking about ketogenic diet not only decrease insulin but also leptin hormone. They said leptin is a hormone particularly in women that helps increasing metabolism. That’s why keto is not recommended for weight loss because it eventually lower metabolism, plateau ur weight loss progress. Could u pls do a video on keto-leptin relationship? Thank you from ur big fan.
Hey! I've got an answer for you but you can fact check this after if you'd like! when you have too much leptin in your body, your body starts to utilize less of it creating more cravings due to a hormonal deficiency. as Dr.Berg mentioned this will spike cravings and create more hunger which then contributes to weight gain. while on the ketogenic diet, total body fat decreases as well as leptin, because leptin in stored in fat. as your body fat percentage is reduced to normal levels, the utilization of leptin increases despite having less leptin present in the body. this makes you less hungry and much more satisfied. in conclusion, leptin is very important to the body for both men and women, however, our bodies cannot use it if there is too much present. reduce your body fat to normal levels (20% for women/15% for men is a great target to aim for.) and you shouldn't have to worry about leptin levels at all! :D hope this was useful!!
You WANT less insulin. If you are overweight (especially fat around your middle) then you have insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is HIGH HIGH HIGH amounts of insulin in your blood but your body can't use this insulin (hence your body is resistant to insulin). You want your body to be able to use the insulin it creates, not have an abundance of insulin. Insulin's main role is to direct energy (take sugar out of blood and either turn it into energy or store it [body fat]), you don't want MORE insulin, you want your insulin to WORK correctly. So if the Ketogenic Diet lowers insulin that is GREAT. Lowering leptin is also great, Dr Berg is saying in this video is we have too much body fat and that means too much Leptin (which comes from fat cells). Too much leptin makes our brain dulled to the purpose of Leptin (signaling your brain to eat or stop eating). So if keto lowers Leptin your brain will become sensitive to Leptin again. Yay! As far as lowering your metabolism, that is mostly attributed to eating too few calories. Calories counting / being in calorie deficit is a complete diet myth and will only result in slowing your body down. Will you lose body weight while in a calorie deficit? Sure. But the reason is your body thinks food is scarce and it will slow your metabolism to prepare for starvation. Never restrict calories, your metabolism will thank you. Instead FAST and fuel up when fasting is over.
“Leptin is not triggered with ‘taking food” … Hi Doc. I know this is an older vid of yours, but I’m confused here- I recently heard you on another video talking of what foods release leptin for fasting purposes? I was sad, because bone broth was included in that list- so wasn’t suitable? I’d be very grateful for any clarification. Thanks so much for all you do again, and sending love from London, England. 🇬🇧 ❤️🩹
We are used to seeing you mastering any subject you lecture about. Therefore, we are looking forward to seeing you lecturing Leptin as great as you lecture about isoline.
Thank you Doctor Berg I have listened to you and learnt much over the years, you are an absolute treasure 💙My stepdaughter is dangerously UNDERWEIGHT and struggles with stomach issues and gaining weight . She’s eats mash potatoes and lots of high carb plus up and goes to try and gain weight but the moment she stops and goes back to chicken, avocado, sourdough etc.... her weight stops or drops. Could you please do a video on what could cause eating / stomach problems that cause trouble gaining weight
I love your videos... I just hope you dont become like all the other doctors out there (like Mercola) and start using your youtube as a promoter of your own products. Then it just seems like the videos are not genuine and just for money. I like your sincerity! keep the advice coming doc!
HAS I think this is silly. maybe he will have more free study time to bring you revolutionary products no done or sold anywhere. but you wouldn't buy.. very silly
He can sell what he likes. It also makes it easy to support him. As long as he is honest , and its consumers that help keep people honest, who cares? I believe honest dealers are possible and that saints are a myth.
thanks so much for your work, is inestimable for me as medical student who didn't catch up why the overweigh people can't stop eating. And as matter of fact, there are also underweigh people who don't product lot of leptin, but they still don't perceive hungry, that happens because there is a great production of keton bodies, which have the function of inhibt the hungry sensation. but there is an another thing: the fructose can inhibit the production of leptin, and so stimulate the hungry sensation but at the same time, the fructose incentivate the lipogenesis pathway, and so stimulate the leptin production
I am overweight. I am rarely hungry and I eat one meal/per day most days. Well mostly during week days. I eat more when I am home on the weekends. Even then I don't eat due to hunger, I eat two to three meals at set times. Right now I am strong. No illnesses not medications. I can do 4 to 6 hour yard work marathons (with water breaks) or home repairs. I can climb endless stairs and lift heavy objects. But during the work week I sit, sit, sit. I have been working in various office since 1997. I know my number is coming and I won't be free from illness long if I don't get the weight off. I grow my own vegetables and in the late 90's early 2000's I was vegetarian for over 10 years. This is the beginnings of when I gained weight. Being vegetarian and not knowing what the hell I was doing. I gained so much weight and became protein deficient. Right now I am transitioning into eating everything fresh. Most things prepared from scratch. I'm not a food extremist but I have cut out most refined foods. I am eating foods that are in season more. And I am incorporating more fermented foods. I stay active on the weekends because I love tinkering in the yard. I workout at a gym and I push away from the desk more. Eating small meals more often through out the day has always been a struggle for me. I just don't think about food. I DO LOVE WATER ❤❤❤
Probably eating more without realizing it, you may think your eating less but cutting out junk foods. But your not tracking your calorie intake properly, oils and condiments can hurt you. Weight lifting and a calorie deficit should help you
great video doc. Just one question: do you think that fat burners are worth the investment if you want quick results?, or is it preferable to stick with low carb diet and patiently wait for the magic to happen? Thanks in advance
I found out that i am have a difficult time processing fats and carbs despite trying to maintain a low-carb lifestyle for years. Since perimenopause, ozempic sounds enticing because I'm constantly thinking about food. Tried IF, and that was miserable, worse brain fog, couldn't stop thinking about eating. I'm trying to address food cravings. I wonder if liver and gallbladder health are part of the problem as well. My labs are always good, according to doctors. I feel okay but not optimized.
Paige Hana lettuce and more lettuce and then more lettuce. It’s really hard to do Keto on a vegan diet. It’s weird but it’s like becoming a vegan automatically directs you to the carbs. Most people eat Tofu but that is soy. Better off eating meat instead of soy
Tania Andrade prove it to me. Show me a vegan plan that puts you under 20 grams of carbs a day. I know of one, all vegetables, that is the only thing you could eat without eating tofu
I've done Keto off and on for 20 years and trained people in it for 20 years. All the info out there is that it is supposed to help stop cravings and hunger. I have also done multiple water only fasts that exceeded 21 days more for spiritual reasons than physical. Everyone says the hunger pains go away after 2-3 days. If I eat 5,000 calories a day on keto I am always hungry and if I fast for 30 days water only the hunger pains never go away. I am curious if I have a huge resistance to Leptin in my body. Not sure what is going on so I just live in a constant state of hunger. Right now I average about 1800 -2000 calories a day and I am constantly hungry. I am also doing intermittent fasting and constantly hungry and been doing solid Keto and Intermittent fasting for 7 months straight now and always starving. I'm curious if there is a way to get the hunger under control. I feel like I have done everything that is recommended. Everyone else who follows my lead and advice is not hungry all the time. It works for them. Doesn't work for me. My weight is fine and I'm 41 and never once been to the doctor for anything, never taken meds and never even had a cavity. My healthy is very good. Maybe you have some advice that might help with the constant hunger. It is sometimes hard to sleep because I get so hungry at night. I eat about 12-15 pounds of low carb veggies a week such as spinach, cabbage, mushroom, a half pound of Parsley, avocados, nuts and seeds, mixed greens, some berries, lots of cucumbers, some Romane Lettuce, some tomatoes, some onions and usually 20 ounces of homemade bone broth a day. I eat a fair amount of healthy fats and maybe 2-3 pounds of animal protein such as eggs, meat and cheese per week. I keep my net carbs between 20-40 per day. Weekends slightly more because I like a few beers and maybe some popcorn once a week. Weekends might get as high as 50-100 carbs for 1-2 days per week but 5 days a week my carbs are usually around 20 net carbs per day. I also drink about a half gallon of green tea per day with a Tablespoon of Turmeric mixed into it, I put a tablespoon of turmeric and half a teaspoon of cumin per day in my bone broth.
Good video Dr Berg, I was thinking leptin was the hormone that burnt fat while you were asleep, is that even what happens? As long as insulin is low obviously
I've been on keto for a year. Lost 35 lbs in a few months then no more even though I'm basically still on it. Havent lost weight in several months and have developed bad gerd/heartburn that wont hardly go away even with prilosec
missing some info on how insulin blocks leptin. it is not the leptin receptor that blocks but insulin that prevents the leptin from interacting with the receptors. check out a video from UCSF called fructose 2.0 where it is explained in greater detail
Very informative. Great for sharing. I suffer from the adipose tissue wsting condition Familial Partial Lipodystrophy. I have very low leptin levels and I take leptin replacement therapy. Initally it helped greatly reduce my appetite but my resistance has built to it. Part of my cobdition is a cery high appetite. Leptin as a diet supplement or 'leptin diets' are a crock though. Leptin replacement therapies are extremely expensive. Hundreds of dollars per day. And extremely limited in availability. Needs to be refridgerated and is unstable after reconstitution with water (comes as a powder) So there's no way Amazon has any cheap therapy.
Leptin resistance could be the dominant factor of obesity. And genetics of having more than average fat cells. Ghrelin is produced by the stomach. Among its numerous functions, ghrelin increases appetite and stimulates the release of growth hormone. You also are lethargic from Ghrelin.
Interesting... I'm wondering if adaptogens might help... There are many plants that target whatever is lacking in the body... If someone is suffering from depression, they (adaptogens) aid in reducing that... I don't know... Just thought I throw that out... Oh! There are many, many plants known as "adaptogens"... One is "Rhodiola rosea".
He probably forgot :D Fructose directly causes insulin resistance, which means high insulin levels, and that means leptin resistance, because insulin blocks leptin signaling, Dr. Robert Lustig had a great lecture about it, he has done research in this area. Long story short - just avoid ALL table sugar, say no to candies, and try limit added sugar as much as possible.
typically when a product says it has added sugar it will mean sucrose or high fructose corn syrup. Both of which contain fructose which is the main culprit for these issues.
I did a metabolic test at a cosmetic clinic and they told me I have a problem with my leptin that causes me to burn too many calories, lose weight and feeling hungry all the time. They suggested me to have a lecithin injection through mesotherapy. I am a bit confused though, lecithin injections are usually given to obese people. Can someone help? Do these people know what they are doing or are they just trying to get my money? Its actually a very pricey therapy to do!
Does Dr Berg actually respond to comments after his videos? I disagree to some of what he says in this video about leptin resistance. I also have a question about fasting and fat burning. Well Dr Berg. Are you in there. Let me know. Dr. Jerry...
Very good info. I know I am insulin and leptin resistant as a T2 diabetic. Unless I walk away from the food, I will continue to eat until I get to full to eat anymore. I am 100+ lbs overweight and this has to change. Thank you Dr. Berg.
me too, i have been following dr. berg and am on a keto diet, i have lost 90 lbs or so and have 80 to go. i am like a new person but still have binge sessions, the only difference is i binge on keto allowed food so my diabetes is always under control. my dr. was shocked when i was normal within 4 months of starting keto. i love the recipes dr. berg vlogs and hope you follow the keto diet too it is very easy
I am T2 diabetic as well, but I'm not that overweight, 5'10" at 175 lbs. been trying 10 - 16 hour fasts, drinking nothing but Tea , lemon water. But recently my food cravings seems to have come back, been eating too much carbs, not getting enough sleep. I think it might have to do with winter, the cold weather makes it harder to go out and exercise. Stuck on treadmill.
My dr refused to give me a leptin test to see if i have a leptin hormone or not and i wanted the injection and the pills because its natural its what is in our bodies and i was scared to take ozempic because i have a bad liver its so frustrating when people find a cure for obeisity yet a perosn with liver damage cant take it or troubles with the liver and is obeise its like the doctor wanted me to take ozempic. .& i wantted to have leptin injection/s & leptin pilla. To loose weight i struggle beyond my mind to loose weight i need a test to see if i have leptin or not ...
Dr. Berg, Please do not take away the original wheat grasses, I brought the new one with lemon and stevia, don't like too sweet, gave up sugar four months after followed your lecture now lost that sweet taste. Sorry but original formula better.
boiled organic cabbage and carrots. w/ real cream butter sea salt pepper and red pepper. I'm just drinking the juice. is this good or not?? need to know. I had bacon and eggs for breakfast. at 8 am. it is now 2 PM I have not had symptoms of low sugar like usual. drinking this juice.
So I usually get low symptoms if I don't eat every few hours. 2 days ago I stopped all sugar. And I mean all! I drank the juice from the cabbage and carrots. With a dab of real butter and never did get low. I'm loving it. Used my tread mill this morning. For 30 min after 2 eggs and bacon. Went out and worked came in 4 hours later had a small slice of cheese and a jam jar of that juice from cabbage and carrots and out for rest of the day. Fixin baked pork steaks. And broccoli for supper. I'm excited cause I just feel better. Wow. Sugar sucks.
Question: Does drinking only black coffee in the morning increases your insulin levels? I only drink coffee (no sugar) early in the mornings in an empty stomach? Thanks.
Okay I'm plant base been plant base since birth . I often do fasts and I never seem to be able to stay stable in my weight. I have no thyroid gland so my weight is up down all time . And at times when it's up my body sweeps up and I can barely walk . I'm tired all time and nothing I do helps me to loose the extra 2 stones I need to loose. So lepton ain't working in my body cos the main hormons don't work. Cos your thyroid controls your metabolism system and blood and organs. So you tell me what other chooses do I have besides starving my self. I barely eat as it it. There is not currently a medication that specifically treats leptin resistance. A healthy diet low in processed foods, regular exercise, and obtaining enough sleep have all been associated with an improved physical response to leptin
That is interesting info. I would like to add to that a small piece of info that I have learned from dr Lustig. INSULIN BLOCKS LEPTIN IN THE HYPOTHALAMOUS(more info in the video " Robert Lustig M.D.: Insulin blocks Leptin in hypothalmus" & in the famous video "Sugar: The bitter truth"). It is easier to pass the message of lowering carb intake and increasing fat intake this way.
BioTrust presents it differently as the hormone that regulates fat utilization. They claim that when you go on any kind of diet Leptin levels drop by 50% in the 1st week and you immediately hit a weight loss plateau because the body thinks it is being starved. Therefore, you must supplement Leptin -- their product is LeptiBurn. They have a huge list of references to studies that they claim supports this theory. Any comments on that interpretation.
I am never 'hungry' but I cannot control the constant overwhelming compulsion to eat. It is a truly life ruining malady. I have been obese since infancy when my mother fed me whole cows milk mixed with sugar and rice cereal!! OMG, no wonder.
Been doing keto for 2 weeks minus 2 carb cycling days with 12-16 hours of fasting a day moderate activity and not losing an ounce. I have diabetes type2 and hashimotos ANY suggestions.. thank you
Two weeks is not enough, a much longer period is required to see significant effects. The maximum accepted weight loss in 0.5 kg per week, no matter the method (keto or any other method). In the first week one may loose tissue water that means loosing weight, but I think this is not happening to everybody. Make sure you follow a correct keto regime, stay well informed. The aim of keto diet is not to loose weight, but to reverse the insulin resistance. By reversing insulin resistance and drastically reduce the carbohydrates intake, one will eventually loose weight. Intermittent fasting is at least 16 hrs fasting, although 12 hrs. are beneficial to.
Hi doc. a lot of times I would eat and than get hungry after a short time. and than ,when I eat again I eat more than before so I eat about two meals in one hour. is that normal? I'm a student and study a lot, could my that be the co use of it?
i have a daughter she had -Enterocolitis problems since 1 year old she is 4 now 😢 so we had to do diet after doing diet she is ok now not vomiting or bad breath but shes feels hungry all the time do you think this is because she is eating fat free foods diet food, as long as i know fat will help to produce laptin, i have taken to doctors, unfortunately, they could not give any decent answer so im doing my own reasearch, i'm thinking may be to give litlle lamb fat after meal so body can get laptin produced ? if anyone can help with this health issue i would be happy as a father. also we have gave blood for vitamin analysys doctrs said it's in the norm level.
Thanks Doc! Have you covered DEPRESSION and BIPOLAR etc.??? I tried looking for such ... but unsuccessfully. This isn't for myself, but others that I know. Besides diet, I am absolutely convinced that NUMEROUS cases are as a direct result of MERCURY ... from both tooth fillings and vaccinations.
Take a look at Dr. Sten Ekberg, his channel is great and I think you'll find some answers there. Too much insulin can cause high triglycerides and mess with Leptin. Also do more HIIT exercises, I lose more doing HIIT compared to an hour of exertion on my treadmill. Also do intermittent fasting. All explained on Dr. Ekbergs RU-vid channel. Good luck.
