Medicare is a government-run health insurance program, separate from Medicaid and Social Security, that’s available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents aged 65 and older. Some younger people with disabilities, including those with end stage renal disease, are also eligible.
Medicare is divided into four parts: A, B, C and D. Parts A and B cover hospital stays, doctor visits, and other services, and are both administered directly by the federal government. Part C plans, also known as Medicare Advantage plans, are approved by the federal government but run by private insurance companies. They include the same service coverage as Parts A and B, as well as additional benefits, like prescription drugs, vision, and dental coverage. Part D plans cover only prescription drugs and, just like Part C plans, are approved by the federal government and run by private insurance companies.
