What is microcement? What does microcement look like? What can microcement be used for, what applications work best, what are ingredients?
If these are questions you have asked yourself when researching the latest floor and wall finishes, you are in luck as this is really exciting stuff and I’m going to give you the low down on them all.
Ok, well I’m Dave Carr the formulator and creator of CARRcrete microcement and I’m going to run through what microcement is and how you can use such a product to create beautiful contemporary floor and wall surfaces that are full of cloud like textures in your next project.
Microcement installations are made up of usually three to five very fine layers applied by hand with a steel or plastic trowel. The idea is to create a laminate system of these layers which range from thicker base layers which include fine aggregates 0.5mm in size through to very fine finish layers.
By applying these layers tightly over one another, the trowel movements create those stunning swirls and clouds within the surface by compressing the ingredients into the layers below.
Microcement Looks like?
Well, simply put, Microcement installations look stunning, they really do. Just look at those swirls, clouds and textures in a microcement floor or wall, what else can replica that? Power floated concrete comes somewhere near but this type of flooring is notoriously difficult to achieve and is often pulled up by lack of refinement by the power trowel operator.
Epoxy resin floors look like, well, plastic floors. A look that I really don’t like and epoxy floors don’t tend to be installed into high end residential projects; whereas microcement floors are always in the roster.
What can it be used for?
Microcement is incredibly versatile, if there’s a stable rigid surface, chances are that a microcement layer can be applied to it. The liquid polymer used creates a very resilient bond to almost any surface.
We have used this product for floors, walls, ceilings, coffee tables, kitchen worktops and shower trays.
What are the ingredients used?
For many micro products on the market, the ingredients list is pretty basic and usually consists of a mixture of ordinary Portland cement and high alumina cement, marble sand and calcium carbonate. It’s ok, but it does have a few technical limitations.
The CARRcrete microcement products differ quite a bit, we use a very advanced hybrid cement binder that is shrinkage free, crack free, very rapid hardening and more ECO friendly than anything else on the market. We also used recycled glass to replace the sand and quartz powders instead of calcium carbonate.
Why? Well, we simply wanted to create a better product, more abrasion resistant, more compressive strength and more environmentally friendly.
What are the installation requirements?
The key thing is that the surface must be dry and contaminant free, rigid and deflection free to prevent any cracking and delamination problems.
We always recommend applying over primed cementitious surfaces to prevent compatibility issues. We not massive fans of anhydrite screeds due to the excessive drying times and general incompatibility with cement based products.
Ok, well I think that’s enough of me babbling along for this video.

Hi! Thanks for the great video. Can microcement be applied over thinset? Thank you!

Microcement derive a lot of their strength from the substrate it is attached too. As long as the substrate is strong 30+ mpa, it'll usually come out well.
