By Zeus, who titles these videos for "Big Think"? While what he says here is fascinating, nothing Ariely says comes close to answering the question "What is morality?" To answer that question perhaps you might ask an ethicist rather than a psychologist?
The title is a little misleading, but I'm intrigued by his observation that 1) people cheat less when contemplating their own morality, and 2) money appears to be an incentive to cheat.
David Blomstrom, you are assuming there that morality is relative by saying their own morality, but also conveying that that cheating is actually wrong, which would make morality objective, and that's the type of discussion the question "what is morality" should generate.
I think morality is objective the same way as science in the sense that there is a moral reality, which is interpreted using moral explanations. This moral reality is based on a single thing: suffering, and compasses the ability to help relieve if, prevent it and recognize it, and our moral explanations are imperfect, meaning they can improve and have improved. This view can be held by atheists and theists as it doesn't require a moral law giver (like the law of non contradiction) and there can be moral progress, which doesn't seem possible with absolute explanations nor with relative standards, because with the first one you get no change and you can do whatever as long as "a deity wants it" and with the second one you get change but no progress, because in that view morality is ultimately just feelings and opinion.
CCC You sound like someone who thinks out there positions, you should watch this, you may find it interesting, it isn’t woo woo or soft soap either. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OvxmCSx6CNs.html
@@genesisbustamante-durian well I have no position on telling people on what they can consume, but for me killing animals that are normally consumed by the human race is okay. But if it's like eating a eagle/lion then I find it a bit weird. I'm also against when it's animals that are almost extinct. But this is all just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.
"Don't lie; don't steal; and, always learn from your mistakes." "All thieves are liars --- and all liars are thieves, even if it's just to steal your trust." "You can't have your cake and eat it, too." "Everyone pays the piper sooner or late.”
Would you happen to be a Destiny fan who got very interested in morality and in questioning moral issues that are generally accepted as consensus, when in reality the majority of people can't substantiate these fundamental beliefs they hold?
That's a a very short sighted perspective, the exact same thing can be said about the private sector, employees, employers and businessmen cheat all time, that's why he talked about specifically the stock market, put aside your political preferences, and you'll realize it's not as much about "statism" as it is about human nature.
Joaquín Bustillos Arce I didn't say that the video only and particularly, I suggested that it fits very well in the statist mindset; and don't suggested that free market based business people don't cheat on each other. As the subject was morality, it just reminds me of the more immoral structure society has ever experienced, that is, the state, because it's based on coercion and initiation of the use of force.
@@RosannaMiller They have all the more reason to be than a theist who can guide their society to complete destruction and believe they will be rewarded in the afterlife like a jihadist. The belief that this is the only life we get makes people value it more, not less. We wouldn't be here if atheists didn't value the survival of their society since such religious ideas weren't invented yet (or "discovered" if you prefer) among our early ancestors.
Smart guy, focusing on morality as people actually live it rather than trying to come up with BS explanations for why we should and shouldn't do certain things, *cough*samharris*cough*
That am married and I have a girl friend what is the justification. The Same thing married people do is equally thesame thing that you that have a girl friend is doing sex. then justify it
I dare you to explain morality to an animal or an Alien 👽 we invented morality although I understand right from wrong it changes from generation to generation from age to age the idea that what is good and what is evil change more drastically than a woman's mind.
Yes its interesting but it's a distraction from what's more complicated of God vs non belief and if there no God why even have morals that are not based on shit except another man's opinion..when an animal kills its thought of that's jus nature..
Gods law! Everyone on earth has broken Gods Law and therefore Gods moral code, and therefore outside of Jesus Christ every person in the world is is BIG trouble with God. In fact the bible says the wrath of God abides on you and if you die right now outside of Jesus Christ you will spend eternity in hell fire and damnation!! BUT, BUT, you don't need to go that way, you don't need to go to hell, if you by faith put your trust in Jesus Christ who is willing and able to forgive all your sin. But a true believer is known by their turnaround from a sinful lifestyle. You see when you believe Jesus and are truly changed by Jesus you are given a complete new nature, yes you've been born again spiritually. You are a new person, just born, brand new in Christ. This is what a true christian is. They no longer have the desire to go out and live a godless sinful life style. They are now in tune with the MORALITY of GOD and only wish to walk in that obedience being led by the Holy Spirit.
Any proof?? If not I suggest you go back to your church and keep praying that he might give you an answer to that question. Hint: he won't answer. Either because he doesn't care about you, in which case you should ask yourself why you belief in him or because he simply doesn't exist. The second one is more likely. P.s.: please don't even answer to this if you don't have any hard evidence, I don't want another discussion with some delusionist.
Yes, there is proof all round about you, but because of your sinful nature you will never accept it no matter how much proof is pointed out to you. You are not interested in living your life in truth but have chosen to live by an imaginary fake morality spawned by your own mind. God is the only rational explanation for life on our planet.
@@pgtips4240 no God is not a very rational explanation for life on this planet. Something as a complex as universe needs a creator. But somehow the creator which is more complex than the creation does not need a creator. God created everything is a cop out. God created everything does not explain anything about the creation process. It is just Hocus pocus.
@@varunkurup300 Sorry but you are just plain and simply wrong. God is absolutely real and I have experienced that reality. You can kid yourself on that God is not real but you are only deceiving yourself and that's no way to die and pass into eternity. My friend I'm not trying to win an argument, I'm trying to get you to see the deception and destruction you are bringing on yourself. Repent for your sins and put your faith in Jesus Christ, the only name whereby men can be saved, by grace through faith alone.
@@pgtips4240 I never said God is not real or God does not exist there is no evidence for any God claims. As strongly as you believe Jesus is true God a Muslim believes his religion is true or same for a Hindu. There is no evidence to say Jesus died for our sins or God exists. Even if I believe just for the sake of avoiding hell . The God would anyway know I was not believing truly and send me to hell. Even if whole of Jesus story is true which I don't consider to be it does not prove Jesus was God or Jesus died for our sins
