Black Walnut makes excellent guitars, sounds and looks good is easy to bend sides and carve into nice stable necks. Possibly easier bending than rosewood. Lumberyards regularly carry it Quarter sawn for about 10% over flat sawn. Pretty easy to resaw into back/side sets for around $20 each. I don't know why it isn't more commonly used. BTW, Janka hardness is not measured in foot pounds. "The Janka test measures the force required to embed a .444 inch steel ball into the wood by half its diameter."

Yes, a spline joint. Usually a bit thinner spline is used perhaps 1/8”. The pragmatic luthier uses 1/8” as it matches the thickness of his table saw blade..

I've been stripping the veneers off old pianos. I laminate 3 layers into plywood and use that with great success

I've built around a half dozen or so guitars out of Black Walnut. To my ear the tone falls between Rosewood and Mahogany. Very nice sounding and looking tonewood.

I've only got 2 two builds under my belt so far but am in the midst of a third which is black walnut. I can't wait to hear it but need to wait until the RH in my workshop stabiilzes. My humidifier is on the fritz so my builds are in the office with a room humidifier.

Hey Eric, thanks for all your time and effort it takes to film & edit/share your videos, I turned to Guitar set ups & repair/restoration during the Lockdown & it kept me sane & I found my real passion, I started college in August to start my 3yr HND course In making & repair, currently building a classical & it's going great, so these videos teach me a lot as I'm always learning & problem solving so I can make, repair/restore instruments to the best of my ability as the best sounding instruments possible is the ultimate goal, Wishing you a Lovely Christmas & New Year From Bonnie Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ☝️♥️🌍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🍀🌈🕊️♾️🙏✝️☀️🌕🌠🫶

May I make a suggestion for this maple guitar? A birdseye maple bridge!

Good luck wht the maple. I have found it to have a superb tone. I have a Martin MC which has great note separation, great high end strum (shimmers like a 12 string) and slightly less bassy than a rosewood dread

There’s a big difference between any rosewood and walnut type wood. Walnut has its own thing going on but it lacks the sparkle and the projection that rosewood has.

question. I see you use flatsawn lumber too for guitar sides. what are your experiences with that? Is it easy to bend? what about stability considerations in your build?

Hey Eric not sure what you would call that joint in the US but in the UK it would be a spline joint or loose tongue joint👍
