If you snore or get headaches while sleeping or when first waking up I suggest getting checked for sleep apnea, of you haven't already. I recommend an in lab sleep study over a home study.

Please keep track of your sleep schedule and talk to your doctor about your concerns. Ask to be referred to see a sleep specialist. This may be Idiopathic Hypersomnia or any other rare sleep disorder which means your symptoms may be on a steady or gradual incline.

I knew someone who died from this.. not from the disease itself but from an accident he drove home put his car in the garage closed the garage door fell asleep forgot to turn the car off breathed in the car fumes and died. He was only 26 years old and it was this disease because when you would just have a conversation with him he would just randomly fall asleep then wake up again later.

@@chandrasekhar-jf8fc Then you didn't have narcolepsy and/or cataplexy! You can keep your snake oil remedies to yourself, because this is a rare and serious disease for too many of us, and people like you need to get a soul, a conscience and a life and stop preying on people with real difficulties and disabilities!!! I highly doubt edible lime and a pinch of buttermilk can fix a lack of the brain chemical called hypocretin (also known as orexin), which regulates sleep, and people with narcolepsy don't have or have too little of. The deficiency is thought to be the result of the immune system mistakenly attacking and damaging the parts of the brain that produce hypocretin, so yeah, fix that!!!

I was diagnosed with narcolepsy a few years ago. I knew I had it even way back in high school. I can't seem to find a Dr around my area that seems to know how to treat it. Some meds work for a whike and then they quit. I'm about to the point that I'd jump off a bridge if there was one close enough to my area. Shit gets old. My now 15 yr old was turned away last year after 2 yrs of us baffled, thiking she had depression, anxiety, schizophrenia (hallucinations/voices/not in the world-feelings) and then the cataplexy started, at school when she was bullied...her sleepiness in the day was put to not sleeping well at night and depressed lethargy. The year before it all began? at 11, riding, basketball at 7:30 AM, straight A's, engaged in life...she never lost her strength of character and told us she'd always had the sleep paralysis and hallucination-feeling/vivid dreams or always feeling in a dreamlike state - ANYWAY. I felt compelled to write here because we are in Canada, and the SLEEP CLINIC at the large Science driven University (World Class btw) turned her away at 14, she was suffering greatly, had ALL symptoms off the charts - they had Narcolepsy as one of their conditions studies at this UNIVERSITY CLINIC and said, "We don't accept anyone for treatment until the age of 19" - I told them that ALL research says that it onsets between 10 and 20 yrs and - they won't help TEENAGERS?! It is already the WORST time of life to have anything that effects your self-esteem and social world and they won't treat TEENAGERS for an Onset Teenage Disease. INCREDIBLE. We went to the Children's Hospital Respiratory Clinic and they are now going to do Sleep Testing on her, we lucked out with a young Dr. who is keen and has not yet had a case of Narcolepsy so he seemed very interested...initial symptom testing OFF THE CHARTS as we knew. This is current and happening November this year. I worry about what medications they are going to suggest so forth...I am SO NOT into that, but she says, ANYTHING to help her...I understand her pain. She LOVES school and is super bright, still doing well...but misses many days. Thanks for letting me rant, as we still don't know if they know anything about it really and what our treatment would be. If anyone from Harvard wants to study my kid...we'll fly to you. LOL ;)
@HedenCop
@HedenCop 5 лет назад
I went through something very similar this last year, being very sleepy and even aggressive because of it.(my grades dropped significantly too) Eventually I had cataplexy and my parents tried to get me tested but I got put on a very long wait list. I had to wait almost 9 months for a study. It's very hard for doctors to be able to monitor something like this for 2 days and so they seem to prioritize people being tested for just one night... I finally got tested and immediately diagnosed afterwards. But just as the diagnosis is a long process so is medication. I've tried a lot of different stuff and none of it will ever completely work but I promise that they will help at least a bit (especially with cataplexy and sleep hallucinations). Make sure you get your child on a special 504 school plan so teachers are forced to accommodate and try to understand what's happening with them. And I strongly recommend Prozac for the cataplexy and then modafinil in the mornings and Ritalin at lunch time(if needed) for helping them stay awake! Good luck, remember to stay patient!

@@thememingoflife5452 I'm 57 ... It's not fun, as you already know. But, you can do it. Some thoughts, advice, if I may .. Find a good Dr. One that understands your diagnosis. Few thousand dollars a month. There has to be more. Don't give up on YOUR Dreams. There's research studies that might help too. I survived with Ritalin, Modafinal, Coffee and standing up, to keep my legs strong. If someone tells you that it gets better with age. Probably NOT True. The good news is People should be less ignorant about it. I had better "luck'' years ago when I fasted. My brother, father, grandfather and I had, have it. It's BRUTAL...BUT... Find what you love, your passion and don't take any crap. And if you need a letter for something. I would write one, as goofy as it may sound. I am seriously at 85-95% on the Cataplexy side, truly a breakthrough, real recent, so working with it... not Drs. My research and experience, experimenting. I have other injuries for Disability. If you don't have Narcolepsy you carnt begin to understand what its like. I got Diagnosed this year and my life is slowly getting back on track but last year my whole life was wrecked from work to family to social Narcolepsy caused me a world of shit got the sack from many work places to start off with I was trying so hard but the tirdeness is unbearable its not just like you yawn and could go to sleep when these attacks happen your brains shutting down for sleep regardless of where you are and what you are doing, as this happens I get hallucinations which can look very real and in a public place this causes embarrassment because my automatic reaction to the hallucinations you carnt tell if there hallucinations or not. The sleep paralysis is the most frightening thing I have ever experienced I used to get it every night maybe 2-3 times, Just imagine getting in bed then within a few minuites opening your eyes and thinking somethings not right you try to move but nothing happens then out of the corner off your eye you see a dark shadow which all off a sudden jolts into plain view you see i and sense its evilness it leans towards you and wraps its hand around your neck you can feel its sharp fingernails digging in you smell its foul odour and its weigh5 crushing your chest struggling to catch your breath let me tell you know and im not the kind of person who jumps at a horror film but sleep paralysis is something I never ever want to experience again. Then on top of all this your constantly worrying about the cataplexy which caused me to socially isolate myself and become a recluse almost getting diagnosed with schizophrenia luckily enough my GP recognised the symptoms and I was finally put in the right direction. Im taking Venflaxine 80mg twice a day and they have been great my lifes starting up again just waiting to start o stimulants in july then I can start working again :D P.s. Anyone who thinks they may have Narcolepsy or are undiagnosed go straight to the GP it wont get better just worst you dont realise how bad youve been feeling until you start on the medication and start feeling better and its tough yeah the tirdeness is a killer but the sooner you get it sorted the better :)

+Elo Him I'm sorry you have to deal with narcolepsy. I really wish they could find a cure for this condition (disease?). I hope that your life gets back on track and wish you the best of luck in your future. I don't have narcolepsy, but I've experienced the random paralysis when I used to have seizures as a kid. It is very scary and terrifying when you can see and understand the world around you, but you can't talk or move or do anything. It only happened to me for 10 years, but that was enough to know I'd never want to have it happen again. Here's to hoping that they can get rid of Narcolepsy/Cataplexy/Sleep Paralysis someday.

Auyoko i have found a person like me.. let me tell you my story. i injured my foot and it healed whatever i had to stop doing sports. it was all good but then i was getting tired a lot.. i was getting lots of pains in my legs and my arms. my mom took me for blood work and they said my thryroid was up a little. put me on medicine, did absolutely NOTHING. took me for blood work again, nothing. my mom thought maybe fibromyalgia or lupus whatever. went to a rheumatologist and she said that i basically needed a psychologist. started my counseling. diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and ocd. but still had aches and tiredness.. i was missing a lott of school. my mom was upset. every time i was picked up from school i cried. i stopped doing gym and fell asleep in class everyday. my mom was very concerned. i also did soccer and every time i came home i would cry for an hour about how tired i am and how painful it is. my mom had an idea of maybe it was neurological. went to a neurologist and said to do physical therapy and if that doesnt work we will do other testing. (i forgot to say i took 2 eeg’s and they thought i had epilepsy) but anyways, physical therapy did nothing for me. then talked about genetics because my dad has narcolepsy and so do my 2 sisters and my brother. said maybe we should do a sleep study. had to keep rescheduling due to rain and snow. but finally went, was so uncomfortable.. i went into REM almost every time i fell asleep. results!! i definitely had narcolepsy (severe) and sleep apnea (very mild also had it when i was a baby) and restless leg and arm syndrome (also mild nothing to worry about) wow. shocked. everyone so happy they found an answer!! started my medicine. felt really energetic and started feeling a little better. stopped working and then put to a whole pill. here we are today. whole pill isnt doing so well for me, still going to my peychologist, still have depression, anxiety, ocd. mom is starting to wonder if i have fibromyalgia because she has it. and theres my story. i hope i can do something about my aches and pains. as i am only 11 (almost 12) and already dealing with all of this :/

Do I have narcolepsy? I'm constantly tired, have slept 12+ hours a day since I was about 11 or 12, and do not sleep well at night at all. I roll constantly and wake up extremely uncomfortable 8-10 times a night. If you actually let me sleep I'll sleep about 15 hours in a row, then I'll be asleep again in 5 hours or so.
@MrLazarBogdan
@MrLazarBogdan 9 лет назад
Try to reduce the time you sleep to 8 hours. Set an alarm clock and train yourself to sleep around 8 hours a day, no matter what. When going to bed I would recommend you to start a little meditation to fall asleep. Just try not to think of anything, no thoughts. Keeping thoughts from popping in is difficult at first, but you'll get it. This would help clear and relax your mind to the state where you would fall asleep peacefully. I am no expert, this is only my opinion. If you want an expert opinion, speak to a doctor.

I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy without cataplexy as a child. Now years later over 50 I have been diagnosed again with it. I felt like without the medication I missed so much that I slept through. So many times I felt I wanted to do things but couldn't get out of bed or just wanted to sleep. I wasn't depressed. So, I had a sleep study done and now I am on a new treatment. I believe it will help and they the doctors understand so much more than they did in the 70's.

I always felt like that cod be the case cause I know I sleep way better with a podcast or smth on at night than I do without, it's giving me info and emotions that can put me to sleep yk

Though I can’t relate to the weakening fingers part, I 100% relate to sleeping solid but always being tired and taking a nap that ends up being 2-3 hours long. I can pretty much fall asleep anywhere and quite quickly, whether I mean to or not. What I hate the most is at times I get so exhausted out of nowhere and no matter how hard I try, I end up falling asleep anyway. Or I don’t realize I’m falling asleep and next thing I know, I’m out. Or a few times where I didn’t realize it and as I was drifting away, I end up jolting myself awake more than a few times but it doesn’t help much.

My onset was when I was around 14 or 15. It was not until I was 30 that a doctor recommended undergoing a sleep study, which confirmed a diagnosis of narcolepsy. There are currently several different treatment options, ranging from pharmaceutical to behavior modifications. You might have to go through a trial and error period, and, even after, the symptoms may not resolve completely. The most important thing is to begin at the beginning: have a sleep study performed.
@JessicaPandino

Don't be afraid of getting a diagnosis! Only then can you treat it properly. I have had symptoms since I was a child, and it became debilitating around age 17. I didn't get diagnosed till I was 23. During those 6 years, my narcolepsy cause to me have to transfer away from my dream school and major, then was unable to complete my degree at the other school either. I also had to resign from several jobs because of it. An earlier diagnosis would have made a big difference.

I had all the symptoms except, but "waking up randomly at night" is kinda controllable. It takes about 2 hours until I get up, just to say "sleep you idiot" and go back to sleep. Guess I'm narcoleptic. Sleep paralysis makes me so uncomfortable and nervous, I can't move my body despite being awake, it's like your brain doesn't works anymore or isn't responding to you. What I try to do is go back to sleep, bit my tongue or move some fingers to make some noice, but most of the times I just wake up randomly in it. The worst part is that some times I have difficulties breathing during sleep (pretty rare, but it can happen to me), and I got breathing difficulty with sleep paralysis. It was the worst feeling ever. You can't breathe properly, and you can't do anything about it because you're paralyzed. I hate this thing.

Narcolepsy doesn't automatically mean you lose your license. Many narcoleptics drive, but are careful about how and when. Schedule naps for your day, decide which classes you’re going to fall asleep during and catch up on later (you gotta do what you gotta do), and during those rare times you feel awake, it’s go time. I used to go to sleep during two of my seven classes everyday, come home and sleep for four hours, study as soon as I woke up until about 4am. That’s what worked for me, but everyone is different. I FINALLY broke through and moved a finger which snapped me out of it. People were walking around me and I could hear them in the break room but they probably thought I was just snoozing for a second. I was but I couldn't ask for help or anything. I was literally screaming in my mind to wake up. Worse fight I've ever had. Myself.

Oh man, I’ve had that world-spinning vertigo before and it is rough. I took a small dose (0.5 mg) of clonazepam for a week or two and that stopped it. (Note that clonazepam is a benzodiazepine, and benzodiazepines can be very addictive. You want to take them in as low of a dose as possible and for as short of a time as possible, lest you become hopelessly dependent on them. I’ve heard the withdrawal is terrible.) Anyway, the vertigo didn’t come back even after I stopped the clonazepam, which was a huge relief. I do have other weird sensations and visuals during hypnopomp and hypnagogia, though. Sorry you’re going through this! Hope it gets better! (See a sleep specialist, get an in-lab sleep study with MSLT afterward!)

I know hallucinations are one of them. so during the day or during the night whenever I feel an overwhelming tiredness right before I fall asleep it feel like something shakes my body awake. Right before I fall asleep. It happens all the time. Sometimes I am so tired that I just ignore it and basically pass out from being so tired. But most of the time it scares me so bad I fight everyday not to fall asleep. Please anyone give me an honest opinion. Is this a symptom of narcolepsy or do I have a poltergeist?

Could hypothyroidism contribute to the development of Narcalepsy?

I definitely have this but not diagnosed, as with many of my other symptoms. It's really dangerous for an isolated, disabled, female on public transport and in work and on campus etc. The doctors don't believe me nor care. All the professionals I've seen have been so dismissive. No matter how much I sleep, I've not had one day in the last 8 years where I've not uncontrollably fallen asleep and jerked awake and also been somewhere in between & not able to control myself, it's very hard to explain. It happens so frequently every day and has wasted years of my life away. Obviously it's not the main or only problem in my life but it is debilitating and I think it is caused by or getting worse because of the beyond stressful life I am enduring. I've tried so many things to no success. I don't look unwell at all but I am. I can feel my brain or head region weakening and even stinging and my eyes are very detached and heavy. What can I do? The brain is so beautiful. Thanks in advance.

Z V You need to see a Sleep Study Specialist ASAP. And you need to have both a nighttime and daytime sleep study. It’s important to let your Dr. know if you take antidepressants esp. SSRIs as they will affect your test results and your Dr. should factor that in to your results. You could also have a different sleep disorder such as sleep apnea. Gone unchecked/treated it can cause damage to your heart including heart attack and SCA Sudden Cardiac Arrest. In the meantime keep a daily journal of your symptoms to show to your specialist. Also follow a routine of sleep hygiene. GL.

Definitely sounds like it could be Narcolepsy. I would recommend to keep pushing to get testing so you can get a diagnosis if it is. It took me a long time before I had a diagnosis, and prior to that I was told things like "you just need to learn how to handle stress better" or "you just need to lose weight" (even though I wasn't overweight 🤷🏻‍♀️). It's not super rare, but it's uncommon enough that doctors don't always think to check for it.

Yes. Very likely Narcolepsy could be genetically passed not only with illness

I definitely recommend getting tested. It can run in families.

Harvard mentions something called neurogenesis. Im not clear on the fine details but the baseline of it is that brain cells can be regenerated. perhaps this could be a potential solution to those with dead neurons in the location of the brain specified in the video.

I've never told anyone this and except for my parents and schoolmates no one knows about this. Its sort of like a Donnie Brasco scenario you try to tell some one but it will ruin everything. There's nothing wrong with suffering in silence as long as it you can keep it a secret. Eventually you realize being a fully functioning Narco isnt bad because you can not beat it theres no cure but at least manage it

Sadly we can't say we are narcos, the cartels will kill us. But I agree, I tried to tell friends and family but they just make fun of me or say I'm lazy, my brother's friend thinks that we are gods because if our sleep paralysis which makes no sense at all.
