What is non binary? 

I'm even more confused than I was before. Tf.

Honestly, no, this doesn’t help. I’ve been trying to understand this contemporary concept of “gender” for a long time, and I keep landing at a dead end. If the differentiation between male and female isn’t physical, then what is it? I’m told it has nothing to do with presentation, names and pronouns, attraction, clothes, hobbies etc. either. So what is it? I’ve asked this a lot, and it always comes back to what a person “feels like.” But how can you feel like something that isn’t defined in the first place?

This just confused me even more. I'm trying to research it because I thought it was kinda weird and I don't want to have a negitive outlook on things. This didn't help at all 😓

You lost me after 1:25. Non binary sounds like it has more to do with clothes whereas cis and trans has more to do with being Male or female.

Not all men are manly men some are compassionate and more sensitive, Not all women are girly girls some are strong-willed independent women. That being said these just characteristics and personalities, I don't think it effects gender, but that's just my opinion.

Okay I’ve just had my two close friends turn non binary (we’re 14) and I don’t want to hurt them by asking questions or judging them but I’m really confused so I’ll do it here instead. This might sound transphobic so if you’re sensitive about it please don’t read. Why do people nowadays choose their “gender” when it’s not something you can choose anyway? Like whether or not you call it however you want , or you “feel like it “ , in the end of the day you can’t hide it at some point, can you?. Why did we make something that was purely scientific have nowadays become social and in most cases trendy?? And , isn’t lgbtq+ about “being who you are”? Then why people choose to escape from a gender just because of how they feel about it?Why? Can’t a female be masculine or vice versa? If it mostly judges the genders from the stereotypes about them then doesn’t it go against the principles of accepting yourself the way you are , so the whole lgbtq+ principles? Please be respectful in your replies I’m really just saying how I truly feel I can’t act like it’s nothing at this point.

Hi Ashley. I seems to decide what I do by what is beneficial to me (for example decide what to wear by how much stuff a coat can carry) along with old habits. Would you consider me a gender non-conforming person, or would you consider me still a mostly male person, since even though I try to not judge something by its maleness or femaleness, maleness-associated (as seen by others) options turns out to be what I'm used to most of the time, because I'm more familiar with them for I'm raised as a boy?

You're gender is is not how you feel, that's call your personality. Gender is a fact, you can change your personality and how you want to express yourself but that doesn't mean your gender is different.

This is something I sort of struggle to understand. I really do have an open mind when it comes to the way that people choose to live their lives. Many women work in what are typically considered to be masculine fields and many men work in what are considered to be feminine roles. Men and women both dress to appear as the opposite gender, with many going through reconstructive surgeries to have the genitals and breast of the desired sex. Where my mental conflict lies is that even if you choose to live your life as a different sex you were born as, that doesn't really change the basic facts.

What If I'm not necessarily uncomfortable with my physical gender? Like let's say I'm born with male parts and I'm fine with those parts but I don't necessarily feel masculine all the time, but I don't feel female either. Is that still non binary? Or is that something else? Also.... Would I still need to pick a gender neutral name and all that or is it okay to keep my birth name. I'm honestly confused

My kid is 6 years old he identifys as a 21 years old and now hes drinking al day but its all good he feels 21 so i should give him that freedom to drink right? And my other son is 18 but he feels like hes 70 so he identifys as 70 and now he doesn't have to work for the rest of his life.

I still don't understand if non binary is just a new word trend for being different (because we already have all sorts of different possible combinations that have a name, a community, real combinations for which real people fought so they can express free and be accepted for who they are, combinations that are all over and in between those 2 boxes, OR, is a real new thing, different and new to what it already exists, and for the first time in my life, it makes no sense to me. I understand everything possible, between those 2 boxes, taken as a singularity or as a combination from different factors' point of view, from the genetics, psychological to emotional and social and whatever other possible points of view it exists. But those are singularities or combinations of male and female. They exist. They are a choice. They are a beautiful painting of all the existing colors. As for non binary, when I hear the term and explanations, I imagine a void. I just can't grasp it, it seems not real. A seashell is definetly non binary for me. A rock, a piece of paper. One day, maybe a humanoid robot (due to the sake of a SF future) which I'll date, and I'll turn it's gender and looks how I want it to be. But not living beings. I'm sorry. I just can't understand it logically, nor emotionally. People shouldn't wake up one day saying i'm neither male nor female. Then what are you ? A shoe ?

To me, non binary makes perfect sense because gender identity isn't your genitalia. It's a cognition, behaviour and expression. I think people fail to understand that sex is only what genital a person has and gender is deeper than that. A definition of female is NOT someone who has a vagina, someone who gives birth and has breasts. Definition of a male isn't someone with a penis and scrotum. By that logic then, women with small breasts or women who have cannot give birth to a baby aren't woman because she technically doesn't have breasts and she can't do what a typical female body does. Men with small penis or scrotum isn't men because he technically has no penis or scrotum. Femininity and muscularity is much deeper than that and it is a cognition, behaviour and thought process. If you are not a man the way you think, feel and act, then your penis doesn't make you a man. If you are not a woman the way you feel, think and act, your breasts and vagina doesn't make you a woman. In gender non-binary's case, they don't identify as a man or a woman because of their cognition, or they behave in a way that they are both genders. Of course all gender no binary people are biological male or female. They just do not identity as either and that's not something unusual or hard to understand. Everything in life is a spectrum, not a two extreme ends of ideals

Exibit B: *Looks at two boxes. Picks up purple crayon. Throws crayon across the room and rips up the paper. Leaves room.* OR... Exibit C: *Looks at two boxes. Gets up and leaves the room.* There's not really a set scenario for what non-binary really means, it just depends on what the person feels about it. As long as you don't define as strictly man or woman, then alas, you could be non-binary.

How does a non-binary understands whether "s/he they" is non-binary or bi-sex or homosexual? I mean, are we talking about sexuality (in which case you either like men or woman or other LGBT) or about behaviours in general, in which case there is already a massive variety within the heterosexuals etc.? Yet in other words: what does exactly feel like no to feel neither female nor male?

I’m confused because shouldn’t gender based on biological factor rather than ‘feelings’ and ‘identity’? You’re saying penis and vagina, but it’s more than that - it’s your hormone, how your brain is formed, puberty, bone density, etc. Just like how we have women vs men sports categories in Olympics to promote fairness. I know about intersex but that’s such a tiny fraction - I will have easier time understanding if there were people who were born as intersex and decide to keep their intersex physicality and want to be called as non binary because its based on a biological definition. If based on feelings to define gender, to me, there shouldn’t even be a spectrum between man and woman to begin with - or even a human, maybe some days I might feel like I’m not human at all, maybe more like a cat? Maybe Sometimes I feel like I’m a baby boy, so call me non binary baby? Like does this construct extend to other biological factors like age also? Cuz I might be 60 yrs old biologically but I might ‘feel’ like 18 yrs old on a certain days… and age is a construct made by humans. So is it rude to ask about your age also? Vice versa, I understand trans because to them, biologically, they were born in a different gender body - thereby biologically goes under tremendous stress and risks their life to go under a physical procedure to be born into a new ‘biological gender.’ Non binary, I hear that ‘sometimes I feel like a boy and sometimes I feel like a girl’ - what does it mean feeling like a boy? A non binary friend told me that they sometimes prefer dressing up like a boy with a boy haircut - but sometimes wanna be feminine by wearing make up. Aren’t all these stereotypes? Is it appropriate to use these stereotypes to define genders? Ive been trying to understand for years but I’m still struggling. I also see my non binary friends calling their pets as she/he - to me that doesn’t make sense because how do they know what their pets feel regarding genders? They’re calling it purely based on biological definition. By all means, I highly respect and accept my non binary friends. But acceptance is different from understanding and empathy… I’m looking up videos like these to deeply understand but I’m struggling.

I think I got some of it but I think I need a bit more info

I really struggle with this gender issue. I see absolutely nothing wrong with doctors checing the box based on objective observation of genitalia, like i see nothing wrong regarding the weighting of the baby at birth, or giving an Apgar score. None of those are social or political or psychological assumptions, but biological facts. Even asuming changing sex is a choice based on personal preference, transition from male to female is very different than transition from female to male, i suppose surgical and hormones used are quite different. I cannot imagine what a non-binary transition would mean in medical terms, it would mean no genitalia or both genitalia?

By theory and if you go by how you feel ,some people can feel like a lizard and then I have to accept them as such. I think that even if you feel like a lizard the reality is you are not a lizard no matter how hard you try and to get offended and expect others to believe what you believe is narcissistic when it’s a fact that you can’t just be whatever you feel like being. I can’t be a koala bear no matter how hard I try. What if I live to 80 and I identify as a 12 year old ,this doesn’t make it true.
