What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder? 

My son has this. He's now 22. Life has been hell. I had to move away from him as it got so bad. I noticed something wasn't right at age 2. The U.K does not understand this disorder. I was not harsh or neglectful i was very present and a good mother.

I was labeled with ODD as a child. I was beaten for no reason as a kid and grabbed by the hair and almost killed by my father. I grew up through juvenile justice and foster care. I was expelled from elementary school, middle school and high school and eventually forced to school through juvenile justice. Most of the time I was just defending myself because of the way I looked people thought I was an easy target but those that picked on me ended up in the hospital only to have them lie and say I did the thing I did to them for no reason. I was also accused of several att murders I didnt do. That was over 30 years ago. Take care of your kids

Adults can have this, not just kids. I recently watched a lecture by Dr. William Dobson (ADDitude Magazine channel), in which he states that ODD behavior is "hardwired", not volitional. He talked about communication strategies for circumventing (I think). Good lecture.

One of my good friends has this disorder and they’re such a smart person and always fun to talk with. They got let go at work recently bc of their behavior w patrons and I’m sad. Bc also they are extremely emotionally intelligent, charismatic with people and also struggle with this disorder. Seriously people with this need love and support bc they’re wonderful they just need understanding

I think it’s important to point out this can occur in children who have not experienced any trauma whatsoever. If a child has no siblings combined with parents who don’t establish consistent boundaries specifically with regard to discipline, that’s like flipping the parental / child roles. A child will become extremely defiant when they essentially are in control of the household dynamic. They are simply acting like a child left to police themselves. They do not have the executive function neuro-development to be reasonable and instead are impulsive and emotional without structure and consistency. This often happens in single child homes where the adults try to reason with a child like a mini adult thinking they’re doing them a favor. They are actually following the recipe called “How to create a narcissist” 1. Doesn’t respect boundaries. 2. Believes they are superior to others. 3. Is not expected to model empathy and consideration to rules, others, and cultural norms. 4. Is not allowed to feel uncomfortable emotions and work through those because parents are constantly manipulating the environment to avoid this type of child from lashing out and causing a scene. That works w/out consequences so why would they stop. Parents can be loving and supportive but if they are inconsistent, child has a strongly reactive temperament, add in some neuro divergent deficiencies in the brain, PRESTO you’ve got ODD staring back at you. A good family psychologist can help get parenting behaviors back on track.

Can anyone help me. I know this video is a few years old now. I've struggled since he was 2 he's 7 yrs old now. He has all the symptoms. I'm desperate for help. All the authorities in the UK where we live have blamed me and iv had child services try to take my children by placing them on the at risk register. He has all the symptoms you described every single day. I don't have good days. He isn't so bad at school he's worse at home. We can't go anywhere cos he's a risk to himself and others by running off and hiding etc. I'm at the end of my tether now Help me please 🙏 😢 someone!! Anyone

Definitely genetic in my family. My little boy was growling and angry hand gestures at just 11 months old.. I knew it was strange for a baby that young and I’ve been getting him assessed since he was 2..he’s now 5 and he is level 3 ASD ADHD and ODD. Our older children had dyslexia’s (diagnosed, one severe) and one of them would have been classed as ODD and ADHD if back then all the labels were not Taboo as it was. We have one daughter she has a genetic syndrome (ddx3x) and although her gene mutation was not passed to her by her mother or father, they did find 2 other gene mutations which were passed to her one from her Dad and one from me and it’s possible we have passed them on to our boys. These gene have been found that if they are mutations on the gene, then the children can show autism-like symptoms. The 2 gene mutations we passed on are called SMARCA4 and SMARCA2 and these genes have been flagged and added to intellectual disability gene panel testing because them and about 500 more are known genes that can cause autism-like symptoms ranging from severe to mild

So i was diagnosed with ODD at the age of about 7 or 8 and basically my mother pushed the diagnosis so i could get hep in school because i got in trouble alot yes i understand why i was diagnosed but these symptoms of ODD are very broad and the way i see it is every child doesnt like being told what to do but i feel that i have overcome this diagnosis and it no longer affects me also i am 15 now wanting to join the army at 16 in the uk do you think this diagnosis could ruin my chances of joining the army would love a reply asap m8 thank you for the video

Yikes! I don't like the way this sounds, it is extremely broad. Nothing happens in a vacuum, so the context for angry behavior can often be justified.

Doctor Grande question. Could CTE in an early stage in your suggestion bring on ODD?

How do I best respond to the ODD symptoms of anger and opposition frequently presented by my now adult son? He has been on his own since college, but moved in with me for two months after Thanksgiving 2023, following a breakup with his girlfriend of 5 years. 😢 He recently said that, growing up, I would get angry with him when he didn’t follow rules that didn’t matter to him and that he seldom received hugs from me. Until I heard this, I thought his mom and I were pretty good social, academic, and sports coaches and attentive parents. Now it seems that mom and I may not have set enough clear boundaries with effective consequences in advance. This led to confusion for him and to me getting angry instead of remaining calm and imposing predetermined consequences when he or his friends violated our rules.

i wonder if there has been any advancement in isolating the 'causes' ... it is the year 2022 now, i am inclined to lean toward environmental factors being the main cause.

I have tried to find effective ways to communicate with and correct my son but it has been a struggle all these years and all I want is for my son to be happy and healthy

How prevalent is ODD in youth, perhaps aged 11-15? In my classroom I could say that about 15% of my students could qualify for this definition. Could you differentiate some examples between students that talk back once a week, or with particular teachers verses a student with ODD?

a study of each individual`s background may shed light on whether the malady could be genetic. i think genetics could be shown as the causal factor as in many behavioral studies. No doubt, and maybe more than half, the ailment was not and/or otherwise self activated.

i think its misguided that all neurodivergence is classed into a “disorder” automatically. sometimes its warranted, but other times you’re just pathologizing people with unique wiring and skill sets because they dont fit into a pretty box with a bow tied around it. just because the way certain people exist is inconvenient to the system… my bf was diagnosed with odd when he was younger and he is a wonderful fascinating intelligent person. we both have adhd. we recognize that sometimes the rules set in place are actually there for no good reason except to maintain control of those who are forced to follow suit maybe try to understand where theyre coming from (ASK) and advise them on how they can stay true to themselves and their disposition while also navigating society in a way that wont get them in trouble. these two can coexist. most of the time this behavior doesnt require a diagnosis, it requires a conversation in which you retain humility, curiosity and respect for the person you’re talking to. just my take.

My question is this, if the behavior is deliberate with a specific desired effect how can it be a disorder? Wouldn't that just be decision making? Kinda sounds to me like a way to avoid personal responsibility, which is already far too prevalent in our society. Disorder implies circumstances beyond your control, that would be the opposite of deliberate behavioral choices

Pls help me to identify that I am suffering from odd or not?

My nephew was just DX with this he will be 5 November 11tn. My son was DX with this around 3 or 4. My nephew was also DX with Level one ASD and ADHD.

Colors dont have to be opposite all the time in nature.

My 6 yr old daughter displays all of these behaviors but only at home! They seem to be triggered by her autistic dad or autistic brother. Sometimes she gets like that me , but I can handle her a bit better. I'm torn about sending her to a psychiatrist since she's a sweetheart otherwise. 😢
