What is Radioactivity and Is It Always Harmful: Explained in Really Simple Words

Radioactivity is the property through which a heavier, unstable nucleus assumes a more stable state by emitting radiation. The process through which a nucleus turns into a stable one is called radioactive decay. But is radioactivity or radioactive radiation always harmful? Let’s discuss this in more detail.
Inside an atom’s nucleus, there are positively charged protons and neutral neutrons. These nucleons are held together by a “glue” called the strong nuclear force. This strong force cancels out the repulsive electrostatic force of like charged protons and keeps the nucleus stable. The nuclear force has a short range of action and is dependent on the ratio of neutrons and protons present in a nucleus. However, we see that the balance between the forces starts to waver in a nucleus where the number of neutrons exceeds the number of protons. A nucleus that exceeds the threshold number of neutrons and protons that the strong nuclear force can hold together comfortably will be more unstable.
More specifically, these scenarios give rise to unstable isotopes of elements. Just as your body, through a series of expansions and contractions, expels a substance with a sneeze, similarly, the unstable isotopes of elements fling out different particles or forms of energy to restore balance between the forces in their nucleus. During this process of attaining stability, they change into a new nucleus. It is exactly this property, namely turning into something new to attain stability, that we call radioactivity.

In the video, it's implied that ionizing and nuclear radiation are the same thing; but what about x-rays and UV-C rays, they are ionizing for sure, but are they nuclear?

I have a question about your time dilation video and idk who else to ask to get an answer because i don’t know any physicists. You say the head is older than the body because of gravity, but how is that? Would that only apply if you jumped? If not, how can the feet be accelerating more quickly and thereby be slightly younger than the head? I also wondered why the head wouldn’t be younger because of the rotation of the earth meaning the head is moving more quickly than the feet by rotation. Any answer would be very appreciated!

The subtle fear of Nuclear power is still evident in the fact that it misrepresented the two examples of reactor disasters. The japan accident had no fatalities from radiation. And funny how they made the Chernobyl meltdown look bigger than the "four-square-mile radiation zone." Moreover, the video ended on the fear note-- not subtle.

Every thing on Earth has a good and a bad side. Like radiation, radiation is used to treat cancer and fend off many other diseases, but it also has a bad side. Nuclear bombs that kill thousands and millions in just one single explosion. Nuclear reactors that are producing power but if a meltdown occurs will infect thousands with radioactivity. Nice explanation though! Keep up the good work ! 😁😁

Does life in fact need radioactivity? If you removed all of it, it'd alter the environment in your cells quite a bit I imagine. Since it breaks molecules and ionizes stuff, I imagine that there could be biological processes that wouldn't work entirely properly in the complete absence of ionizing radiation. You might perhaps even get quite ill in an environment where you were isolated from all radioisotopes and external sources? Even if you made UV-B an exception. Life has a tendency to throw curveballs, could it be our bodies secretly make use of natural decay in subtle ways?

When you think about it, there is no rational explanation for the behavior of atoms. Why do they act the way they do? What governs these patterns? It raises the question of whether all of this was deliberately designed by a higher force. The universe is teeming with meticulous details, offering boundless creative freedom akin to an artist's canvas. There exists an inherent order so deeply woven into existence. It can’t be a coincidence.

Radioactivity was discovered thousands of years ago by Indus valley sages and academics. There's mention of Brahmastra in the Vedas which invokes in the form of a fiery ball of lightning and can be manifested in anything from a blade of grass to the tip of the arrows. This knowledge was so secretive and forbidden that only few remarkable people could manifest this power. Mahabharata has mentioned 4 such people in ancient times. It was kept forbidden because of the immense destruction it causes. It is explained that after the impact of the Brahmastra nothing grows in the area every living thing perishes and nothing will grow there for 12 Brahma years. It is said in the Vedas that the world will come to an end with a Brahmastra which is ironically evident in today's time
