Finger reconstruction is the surgical construction of an amputated finger post-trauma. The patient is tested and examined to determine eligibility for replantation surgery. The procedure is performed under anaesthesia, during which the surgeon first removes the damaged tissues. During reconstruction, the bone ends are shortened and rejoined using pins, wires, plates and screws, holding the parts in place and restoring tissue. Following this, the muscles, tendons, arteries, nerves and veins are repaired. The patient may sometimes also require grafts for the procedure. Finger reconstruction may take around 3-4 hours, after which patients are advised to avoid smoking and stay overnight at the hospital to have their recovery monitored.
