I too agree that we should be allowed to take things apart.

Apple: We stopped giving you chargers when you spend $1,000 on our phones because...we love the environment. Also Apple: We made it almost impossible to replace a screen on an otherwise fine phone because...we hate the environment?

“Imagine you have a job that requires drug testing and you quit the job ……… and they still try to test you for 5 years” my god. How can apple even legally attempt that?

It's kinda creepy if company calls you one day and says "hey we know what you did with your product."

The "because of safety" excuse is the exact same excuse like the "there is no room for a 3.5mm jack" YES THERE IS. YOU DESIGNED IT SO THERE IS NO MORE ROOM. A guy on youtube even returned a 3.5mm jack on an ip8 if I remember correctly, even though there "is no room"

When Louis, linus started talking about this. I honestly thought you and others won't speak on this because on the dependency getting new products early etc. But getting your voice out on this, has raised my respect for you tremendously. Watching you from 7 years, won't stop ever

As far as John Deere goes, a friend of mine had an issue related to the electronic control system, ecu, pcm, whatever you want to call it. JD gave him such a hard time that he came to me and had me build an open source ecu to control the entire tractor (Speeduino based). It gave him complete control over every aspect of that damn thing and JD is not happy. Now his warranty was just about up and doing something like this will void your warranty, but if done right takes the piss outta some of these companies

As a former kid who used to and now an adult who still loves to take everything apart, I agree that we should be allowed to fix our stuff. Thank you for mixing in discussions about these important issues with more reviews of the next piece of tech.

As a family farmer and former John Deere dealership employee, yes this has been a huge concern and issue for local farmers around where I live. To the point that many are switching to different colored tractors.

Marques, thanks for bringing this up. Maybe 1,5 yes ago I cracked a pixel 3a, but found it hard to find replacement parts. I considered looking for on eBay etc for comparable parts to replace at home, but felt concerned about quality & reliability etc. I live on the Dutch side of the border but had bought the pixel 3a at a German Mediamarket nearby where it was on sale, incl insurance. I took the phone in to get fixed and didn't hear back for a week. The call centre is all the way across the country in Berlin and it was "impossible to transfer me" but would make sure to call me back asap. I never got that call, but have continually called Mediamarket and the insurance company (who claim the phone is with the shop), and I have driven the 45 mins to the facility (when cross border & other COVID restrictions allowed) where they told me the phone is with the insurance company but that someone would call me the next work day "even I drop dead". All delays have been blamed on waiting for a shipment on parts. Maybe this ties in to the right to repair. Either way, I have been left with suspicion for insurance and the feeling that the whole system is rigged to rip people off. Is there anything I could have done?

Worked at the Genius Bar and had to turn down customers over the simplest repairs bc I wasn’t allowed to do it and instead was told to push selling a new phone or I’d get in trouble. I’m so glad you are talking about this.

The first hurdle which reduces your right is the way you pay for the item you purchase. As an example the leasing for cars will limit the amount of miles that you can do in a year. Because you are only allowed to use the car within certain limits and under certain conditions until you pay that symbolic last one dollar token. Small prints.

I feel like it would of been good to have mentioned the software locks on Apples iPhone, especially since they disable certain functions even when using genuine parts. Overall the video was entertaining and the right to repair issues where well covered.

I miss the good old days when you can just replace a phones battery within 20 seconds on your own and it never costed you a bomb.

My great grandmother had a sewing machine that outlived her and her children. It sits in my mothers house now.

Louis Rossman's summary is so important. It's ok for the tech to get smaller and more challenging, but it's not ok that manufacturers are contractually forbidden from selling their parts to end users. Then you can't step up to the challenge even if you want to.

Great video and great arguments! I had a faulty battery on my Galaxy phone and the authorized service told me I had to change the battery and the motherboard for a insane cost! I couldn't find a way of buying a battery or changing it anywhere other than the Samsung's authorized service.

I’m glad the bigger creators are adding a voice. It’s felt like Rossman’s been fighting on his own until recently.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Here are my thoughts on the matter. Regarding the hazards of taking things apart; Yes it is "dangerous" to take electrical things apart, especially if it contains large capacitors that can store a lot of current. This is especially important when working on a power supply. The quick fix is having some basic information about electronics and the right tools. A person new to repairing could then read about how to safely discharge large capacitors and then it's perfectly safe to work with (when not plugged in a wall outlet). But here is the beauty of right to repair. If more people were more used to repairing their own equipment, they would share it freely on social media or other online platforms. Books are also a good source when it comes to repairing electrical devices. Tools are very cheap now and a lot of devices use SMD components that are soldered with hot air. It's do-able but takes practice to it yourself. I wish I could repair my own devices easier because I think I already create too much e-waste as things are now. It's so expensive to get parts that it's easier to just buy a new phone and it's sad. My dad's old computer was 25 years old when he retired it, and it was still working at that time. Now you can barely have any electrical device last more than 5 years. It can't be good for the environment. I think it's also up to us to settle with having an older phone model and not the latest tech all the time. The device is still serving a purpose. I dabbled with repairing my own things and sometimes I manage to fix it. I fixed my 10 year old television that was still going strong. I managed to fix it with the help of russian RU-vid videos that was translated on the fly and I had enough information to repair my TV to a working state. I eventually replaced it but just repairing it added at least 2 years of it's life span. I took to a communal garbage disposal facility so it's taken apart and exposed of properly in a safely manner. Try to repair things before throwing them away is not only fun, but good for the environment. You are learning a new skill! What's not to love c'mon?!

In a colossal win for the Right to Repair movement, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has published a statement where it unanimously approved the prioritization of aggressive action against manufacturers who impose unfair repair restrictions on individuals and independent repair shops. We need to push to make this a law of the land!

Good to find a good tech video that explains stuff in a way that people might actually understand

Let's not forget that it is not only about you repairing the device yourself at home, but that you can take it to any shop that you trust to make the repair.

Great topic, well executed! Thnx for brining this to our attention. One more thought on your last point, companies invest so much on great engineers because they want to make everything more integrated, not just for the product to work better, but also to be more complicated to be repaired. I don't see any problem with a phone battery being removable, and can be easily done by the companies, but they give no proper explanation why that can't be done except maybe "waterproofing".

I work at a Ubreakifix. I do in warranty work for Samsung and Google, insurance for Verizon, ATT, and Asurion. We are apple authorized and we also repair every part of the iPhone not just screens and batteries. I have personally repaired almost every device on the market today including in-warranty work on the flips and folds.

Got to love how MKBHD is a fan of Apple and Tesla... But, won’t hesitate to call them out on their bull. 👌👌

This was one of the best videos I've watched this year

I literally wrote my Master's thesis around right to repair. Well, why right to repair is essential for future engineers. Anyway, when I was a kid took apart everything in the house because I wanted to know how things worked. I didn't take apart the microwave though but that was only because it was over the range and at 12 years old I wasn't strong enough to take it out of the wall and cabinet. Anyway, I made a lot of mistakes in my tinkering. For example, I took apart one of my family TV's, the CRT kind, the big, heavy kind. That's when I discovered the flyback high discharge lead. Yes, it hurt. But I learned something. One, I needed to know how to safely discharge the CRT before poking around. Second, instructions, manuals, any type of learning materials would have been helpful had I been able to access them. I was a curious kid though and wanted to know (mind you, this was before the internet, the late 80's). I believe you should have the right to repair what you own, and maybe that's the real argument. But just because repairing your device might be a little dangerous isn't an excuse to prevent anyone from repairing it. If we teach our kids that it is too dangerous to investigate, to try and repair your cracked screen or replace the battery then we really are losing a generation of young engineers. I broke a lot of things growing up because I wanted to know how they worked. I accepted the consequences going into it and sometimes it was painful in more ways than one. But the value of hands-on learning and investigation was invaluable to me. So you need a heat gun to take the screen off your phone. So what. Lithium-Ion batteries are dangerous. So? Give us the information to be safe and repair these products ourselves. I guarantee you that there are some kids today that will not be intimated or stymied by the danger of a battery catching fire or industrial epoxy. If they want to take it apart they will. The question is are we going to help them put it back together. I'm ranting, but we're killing a generation of engineers because of corporate profit and control.

I too agree that we need to have Right to Repair, because first at all we still Buy the products and not Rent the products. Repairing your stuff isn't something bad, we will have less waste around. But the problem with repair is that many companies are pushing high prices for the parts, I have seen a lot of waste because for many people is easier and cheaper to Buy a new thing instead to Repair it. I think the stuff around us should me more accessible and easier to maintain, right of repair is a right of someone's personal choice. Also right of repair should be a more moral question, If we repair something is that going to be safe and good for the others around, for the people, nature, etc. I'm very very glad because many started to talk about this 😀 I and I love how Marques and Louis talk open about this questions 👍👍👍

Right to Repair protects consumers, discourages monopoly power, helps reduce environmental tech waste, and pretty much gives all of us the chance to fix our properties without getting fleeced by "big tech". I've been following Louis Rossman for years and admire his activism on this issue, and MKBHD did a hell of a job getting the point across. Thank you both for your awesome work!

I’m glad this has come to light, As a customer since iPhone 3G I am upset to hear about to repair process.

The problem of viewing an increase in quality with an increase in complexity is that the complexity is not from quality, the complexity is from Apple and similar companies realizing that minimalist aesthetic drives profits. There is nothing saying that your Iphone couldn't be 5% larger and use the extra space to make the components much more reparable. And not only that, there are videos out there showing that if you take two identical IPhones and swap the screens and logic boards in them, they gain artificial glitches and malfunctions because Apple has installed serial numbers into the software of the phone that allows it to detect when anything has been swapped, even for identical apple produced parts. All those glitches and malfunctions seem to magically go away when you put the factory parts back in. The increase in complexity is not an accident and it's not from quality. It's done on purpose solely to drive profits.

Louis Rossman has really started a movement, it's about time people actually realise this. Also do check out the video on why mc Donalds ice cream machines are always broken.

You spoke about repairability getting more difficult with devices, and while that is partially true, companies are also making their devices explicitly harder to get into. For laptops for example there is a lot that is effectively impossible to replace just because it’s all soldered in, but a company like framework will show up and show to everyone that you can make a perfectly good laptop without those restrictions. While phones would be harder obviously, there is a lot they could do to assist the user in repairs, like not using weird screws, hardware locking the phone if something is tampered with (apple I’m looking at you), or just making everything more difficult to access inside. Sure, waterproofing will be lost and that’s unavoidable, but there is a lot they could do to make the process less tedious. That’s not even in regards to what they pull off legally, blocking bills, making service points worthless for certain products and so much more.

In the UK, a new “right to repair” law is expected to be introduced this summer. Details are sketchy on which appliances are covered. However, it is proposed that manufacturers will be legally obliged to make spare parts for products available to consumers for the first time. A legal right to repairs in order to extend a product’s lifespan to 10 years.

Great coverage of a complicated topic. I agree that there isn't a simple answer, but engineering things from the start with a bit more repairability of the most likely to break parts as one of the design priorities makes sense to me.

I think you just earned a sub outta me. Right to repair is tackling a lot of things people don't realize until they're faced with it. Want to replace your screen on your iPhone yourself? Good luck, you only have access to questionable Chinese parts. I feel like this relates heavily to products as a service as well. Think of your Steam account, or Adobe for Lightroom or Photoshop. I've paid over monthly "service" payments more now than I would have for my old Lightroom program to own outright. If you have a Steam account, you do NOT own the games you buy, you license them and at any time it can come to a crashing halt. People don't realize why some harp over owning, genuinely owning their stuff. This applies to all software, and why one should really read their EULA or ToS. You'd likely never click "agree" if you knew that you forego all standing.
