I'm less concerned with the flexibility and foldability of the display. What interests me more is the paper thin nature of it. I'd love to have a large TV on my wall that is essentially just wallpaper.
@nativetexan5457
@nativetexan5457 7 лет назад
I love how you reply to this as though I'm some kind of moron for not caring if the display is flexible. Explain why the flexibility or lack there-of is of paramount concern if I want a paper thin television on my wall. Yes, I think flexible displays are neat but my focus wasn't on the enjoyment of a screen that I can roll up. I'm sorry if you think this is stupid.

@Tyke91
@Tyke91 7 лет назад
+Native Texan, Pakoo Pay misunderstood your comment. He thought you wanted a rigid, thin display - when what you expressed interest in was the fact that these flexible displays are also very thin, and could be useful to you in that way. His thought process was that "dumbass wants a super rigid, super thin TV - that thing is gonna shatter like glass" - this would be a problem with a very rigid object with a thickness of only a millimetre. However, it's clear that if it had to be flexible, you wouldn't care - you just want something thin. Which seems doable, given the content of this video.
@nativetexan5457
@nativetexan5457 7 лет назад
I don't qualify that as a misunderstanding. I said I have less concern about it's flexibility than I do about it's dimensions. Less does not mean none. He automatically assumed that because I wan't fully interested in the fact that I can roll it up, I MUST want a rigid pane of glass. Having less of an interest in a quality of something doesn't mean that I want it to be opposite of that quality. Example, I recently make chicken for dinner. I had more interest in making sure the fat and gristle were removed and less interest in how juicy it came out. By his logic, that means I want a piece of chicken that is a dry brick of chicken charcoal when done cooking. See how ridiculous that sounds? He didn't misunderstand, he assumed the opposite.

Eyalחןעצוןי5עוגנט Ben Ari good idea I have been thinking the same thing for a while now but believe that using a colour e-ink display would work better due to the fact they are already available-ish, are cheaper, don't emit light so it would be more like real wallpaper and don't use energy except when changing the display. The main downfall of e-ink is the lower resolution and frame rate but for wallpaper I don't see that being an issue. Yea I have thought this through way to much!

Perhaps flexible displays are the one piece of technology that companies want to perfect before throwing them out into the wild? Think about it, they're taking a big bet with flexible displays.

Consumer education is going to be important as well. Otherwise we'll have a rash of people creasing their "foldable" displays, only to crack and ruin them.
@OohzyJohnDow
@OohzyJohnDow 7 лет назад
I think it is more about patents and usability. The big companies are having battles over flexible display tech. The other side is the usability. Although it is very cool such a flexible screen, what is it actually going to be used for vs durability? Curved screens already flooded the market and for the home usage there is no need for more curves. Phone screens tried curves as well, but did really catch on, plus why would it? Phones and tabs (etc) need regidity to function good and to offer durability. Flexible motherboards, chips etc are not there yet ;) So what is the usage of a flexible screen then? Other then the "ooh cool" factor and perhaps commercial display setups? To me personally the flexible display market will mostly be for production advantages once the tech has been refined and production processes optimized. As i said before, current display tech already allows for curving.

It would be perfect for my home built flight simulator. Wrap around screen would eliminate all the problems associated with setting up front, left and right views from the cockpit seat. Currently need to use three to six large lcds all running from synced computers with each screen showing a different view. Another approach currently used is to build a curved screen and use two or three projectors.... of course then needing to use warp software. The problem there is keeping the projections from jerking when the simulator is moving during flight aerobatics. A curved tv screen or two would be fixed to the body of the simulator thus eliminating multiple flat screens or projectors.
@alanbeasy1775
@alanbeasy1775 Год назад
@Lurch7861 Ha ha. That was three years ago. Come a long way since then. Have built three axis motion sim - with a dual seat/dual control cockpit with three 55 inch 4K screen for front, left and right, plus three more for instrument panels. Not quite the cost of an actual plane but fairly pricy with high end computer to run everything. But of course I can go anywhere in the world with MSFS and I can’t get killed doing risky stuff.

I agree. It would be perfect for simulators, Flight / Space games.. anything. I note the edges of some of the screens are transparent, so I wondered if you could overlay them edge to edge to end up with an infinite screen or complete circle.
@rfvtgbzhn

A complete circle is not very useful because the human field of vision is only a 180° and it would be hard to get into and out of the circle.

idk, lets just use an FPS game for example, your running around heading to a checkpoint or something and instead of making your character turn around to see what is behind you and in-turn open up an opportunity for someone to shoot you, you could turn your head but remain running forward. now the survival game "rust" sort'a made it so you could do this. you can hold alt and move the mouse left or right to see behind you whilst you remain in a forward running direction and the FPS battlefield 4 and 1 allow you to do the same whilst flying. i never use this myself but if you could have a full 360 degree setup and allow someone to turn their head to see behind them, i think that would be absolutely insane. i would definitely use that. just a thought anyway.
@Pellaeon159
@Pellaeon159 7 лет назад
Just to clarify, ARMA did that alt-look thing first, that got popularized by the DayZ mod, which started the survival genre... one of its spinoffs is Rust. ;) So Rust didnt invent it.
@notwaffle

in a multiplayer game that would make it unfair that one player has a 360 view while others do not also thats a SHIT ton of processing power to be able to render everything around you instead of just the 100 degree or so fov. also Petr is right arma started the whole running while looking around thing.

I like the idea of using them in augmented reality. If you were able to make the screen fully transparent but still display stuff on certain sections, you could cover a pair of glasses with them, like the guy in the video. That would absolutely amazing. VR would also be an awesome application because you could reduce a massive amount of the bulk in a VR headset, due to the fact that the screen is so light and flexible, only requiring the accelerometers and motion tracking, which is already pretty small.

The screen may look a bit distorted the more its folded? unless when you fold it around you in games, you increase your field of view. either way it would be useful just when it comes to ease of transportation

FOLED or flexible organic light emitting diode is a type of organic light-emitting diode. The reason it has not taken over is due to the fact that it has a lot of disadvantages and it's development progress is lacking due to certain obstacles in the type of technology . "Both flexible substrate itself as well as the process of bending the device introduce stress into the materials. There may be residual stress from the deposition of layers onto a flexible substrate, thermal stresses due to the different coefficient of thermal expansion of materials in the device, in addition to the external stress from the bending of the device." Stress introduced into the organic layers may lower the efficiency or brightness of the device as it is deformed, or cause complete breakdown of the device altogether. Indium tin oxide (ITO), the material most commonly used as the transparent anode, is brittle. Fracture of the anode can occur which can increase the sheet resistance of the ITO or disrupt the layered structure of the OLED. Although ITO is the most common and best understood anode material used in OLEDs, research has been undertaken into alternative materials that are better suited for flexible applications including carbon nanotubes. Encapsulation is another challenge for flexible OLED devices. The materials in an OLED are sensitive to air and moisture which lead to degradation of the materials themselves as well as quenching of excited states within the molecule. The common method of encapsulation for regular OLEDs is to seal the organic layer between glass. Flexible encapsulation methods are generally not as effective a barrier to air and moisture as glass, and current research aims to improve the encapsulation of flexible organic light emitting diodes"

Not only would it be great to get peripheral vision in non-VR games, but I really want to see a foldable, GPS map. Something to fit in a pocket rather than mounted. Flexible displays don't mean that they can be creased, though, so that would probably come a bit later. Rolling it up would work, though.

I think the flexible displays need a form factor to adhere to. And nobody has thought of form factor yet. And flexible (non-breaking) display would be great even in a typical smartphone. It would make the device thinner than current gen and we could have easily replaceable glass overlays for when the device is dropped and to prevent scratching the plastic surface from our fingers.

Why would one want one in say a phone? PCB's aren't flexible, batteries arent't flexible. Not by design at least. Where are you going to unroll it? Would it require some sort of "scaffolding" to stay in shape when rolled out? I just don't see the use for it. The moment's when I can sit down with my phone and comfortably use a big floppy peice of plastic as a screen are close to none. And phines by the way are fragile as they are. Would a foldable/rollable display last a year of normal use? As the girl in the intro is using it for example - who the heck would use it like that?! And where is the actual device? No this, in mobile use, is as practical as those transparant displays that we just had to get to work a while ago.
@magic1wizard
@magic1wizard 7 лет назад
maybe for example you could have a small slim rectangle box that has all the phone components and then there is a telescoping scaffolding similar to a suitcase that brings out the screen when you open it.

You fail to see how flexible displays are much more durable than the display panels in current phones. Dropping your phone wouldn't cause the display panel inside to show streaks of random colors. Flexible panels would be amazing for consumers.

hr1100 "that only the back of your car can accommodate." That was just stupid. Save the hyperbole it makes you look like a troll. But yes, the point is to make it roll up. Samsung already made a video demonstrating the concept.

i think companies should invest in a paint display i.e, a special paint you and apply anywhere that turns into a display when you supply electricity. we could paint an entire wall with it and make it a tv. that would be cool. also if anyone decides to make this i'll sue cause its my idea bitch!
@budc.8172

They could be used in the construction industry for large blueprints. One advantage for large blueprints is that you can have many people stand around and view and point at things on the blueprint so you can communicate your ideas easily. Small screens mean that only a few people standing next to each other can show ideas at one time. Also large screens mean you have a giant bulky rigid screen to carry around. So having a large roll-able screen is the best of all worlds combined into one product. It also allows for corrections or changes to be made on the spot that are instantly relayed to everyone else without having to re print blueprints.
