Even with all this book's failings, for what its worth as a non-comic reader Wolverine being a black-ops assassin and getting sent to kill Prof X is actually a really neat and interesting setup for integrating him into the team.
thats the thing about Millar, he has very good (stolen from Grant Morrison) concepts entry points and elevator pitches.. but f*** all else, he can't write a likeable character to save his life.. everyone's overly edgy for no reason or a snarky oneliner generator and woefully shallow
I liked the Ultimate Universe in the beginning. Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Fantastic Four, especially. Over time, that changed. The books got darker and more depressing. Ultimatum was the breaking point. That whole event was just an exercise in pointlessness and cruelty. After that, I stuck to the 616.
Millar has said he had read only a handful of X-Men comics at the time and based most of the book on the movies. So stupid that they gave him this title. I hate UXM. Ultimates 1 and 2 are so great because Millar actually knew and cared about those characters.
Reading Millar's old work is such a mind fuck because I genuinely really like his more recent work. "Starlight" and "Huck" are so wholesome it's shocking he wrote them. Apparently watching Man of Steel and BvS made him do a 180° because Superman is the only character sacred to him, and he thought "who the fuck are these films for....oh right, MY fans. Dear God, what have I contributed to"
The irony there is that none of his DC works actually contribute to the edginess of the DCEU. Hell Superman Red Son was like the only geniuenely good thing he have done with established characters. Most of his actual contributions for Marvel were used in the MCU films, but only the non-edgy stuff made it
When I was a kid, I knew Millar from doing a good job on DCs kids books. It was a huge WTF when I started reading his Ultimate books, etc. I remembered Millar's X-Men being edgy just from the Wolverine/Jean stuff but this feels a lot dumber as an adult.
You ripping into UXM is probably the best thing about how ridiculous and over the top edgy UXM is. Honestly, I'd love to see you tear this whole series a new one. As far as why the ridiculously tight leather costumes I assume it's another jab at Grant Morrison who I believe was writing New X-Men around this time and another duel at "The Greatest Scottish Comic Writer" thing they had going on.
Weirdly enough Millar was never familiar with the X-Men books and took inspiration and info from the Bryan Singer film. Impreasive how (somewhat) on point he was on the premise.
@@TheMasterQuests maybe for new perspective, I mean the ultimate universe was to modernize and new approaches to iconic characters, so having someone new x-men itself kinda worked with how successful it was.
I enjoy the Ultimate Universe because it was a product of it's time. It truly represented that early 2000's era with Marvel Characters. Ultimate Spider-Man is a classic, also never forget the video game, The Ultimates is a huge guilty pleasure of mine, specifically because of the two Ultimate Avengers animated movies. Ultimate Fantastic Four and X-Men were pretty similar in terms of quality. Ultimate Iron Man was... Eh, pretty garbage although it was funny because it tried so hard to be different. Yes, some of the decisions that was made in Ultimates and X-Men were very... Questionable. But hey it was different time. A very, very different and experimental time...
@@giosbizarreart9048 I mean if you were a kid in that time period you probably would have liked it. I don't know how old you are but you were probably fortunate enough to have been the right age at the right time to enjoy better xmen comics. Good for you. Its not too bad for nostalgia or art work.
In 2005 and 2006 they pushed it really hard but it was specifically The Ultimate Avengers movie and the Ultimate Spider-Man Video Game that made me want to read more and for a while I enjoyed it, up until I really saw what was wrong with it and then enjoyed other adaptations and more 616 stuff in a whole new light.
Ultimate X-Men 1 was the first X-Men comic I ever read because it was at the public library when I was 7. I never really thought about how bad it was until now
Ultimate x-men was a unique take on these characters. The main marvel universe reboots/relauches/retcon too much to keep track of in the long run, for me. Cool video.
steve johnson reboots are more dc style but with marvel everything still happens and their continuity is still intacted but yeah sometimes it gets confusing
X men in the main continuity was weird. Like where to start. I mean why american comics can't just name their stories such that people can understand. I mean can't they just emulated manga on the naming aspect. Like if I wanted to start one piece, I would start on chapter 1 but in X men and spiderman or daredevil, etc which number 1, which amazing spiderman, which x men. It's just frustrating.
This was TRUELY the ultimate book for 15 year old virgins. Which isn't even a bad thing really because im sure it moved magazine copies in the early 2000's. But i can observe who the target audience was, and commentary from an adult like this is hilarious.
This is the worst disrespect Cyclops has ever gotten. Scott just stands there and watches as Wolverine makes out with his girl does nothing and leave like a little b#tch.
It must be a Scottish thing but this version of the X-Men really mirrors that analog from the boys, G-Men which still haunts me to this day when they killed those children. Like what the fuck is wrong with these people.
I grew up reading Ultimate Spider-Man, for the most part that was the only Ultimate Comics book I read until the Rebrand in 2011. At that point I read Ultimates by Hickman and X-man during the Divided we Fall Event. In recent years I’ve read a couple books that came out before the 2011 rebrand. Such as Ultimatum, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America and Ultimate X.
Don’t know if you’ve heard of it but I think you might have fun with the ridiculously over the top violence of the indi comic Bedlam. Great video as usual, thank you!
Im not from North America, but i grew up with the X-men TV show in the 90s, however we never had any X-men comicbooks in my country back then. So when 00s arrived and Ultimate X-men started to appear in newspaper kiosks and stores i was so excite to finally see my favorite characters in the actual "real comic books drawn by comicbook artists!!". I was so disappointed. I hated everything about them - how they were drawn (i wanted to see classic comicbooks with cool inking and coloring but i got this glossy-ish stuff with weird body proportions and strange outfits, also many times artist used to draw their faces in a weird manner (like that Cyclops looking up in one of panels (also that HILARIOUSLY awful Storm face at 11:50 haha)) and how ...not very good stories were. I still have all those Ultimate X-men issues from the 00s because even if i disliked them - it was the only way to see more stuff about x-men. (thankfully X-men Evolution tv show was on the air in the 00s so i had the good part of x-men at that moment) PS: I'm also a fan of Beast and i didn't like that in early Ultimate x-men Hank is some stupid huge semi-naked biker-looking human with big gross feet... He was so great in the 90s Tv-show...
This is straight up character assassination. Cyclops would never ever betray the X men. There not just his teammates, there his friends and family and he would never betray them.
In the first volume, how old are the characters are supposed to be even storm ? She looks like to have between 17-19 in the fact that the ultimate shows younger versions of the characters.
Your commentary is so phenomenal, like I really really enjoy all the little cuts especially the wolverine part and how you hate all the sexual innuendos hahaha you're hilarious man, this version is such a creep lol
A few things to say: I checked this out and looked into it. Thought it seemed good. Also do i ever expect to see you do a Take on more Elseworld and Possible Venom?
Funny enough, when I was reading ultimate X-Men I was trying to determine when Colossus would come out, and as a result I totally overlooked all of the misogyny in this comic. It's your reading of it that did it for me 😅
I think as a whole it isnt that good, but alot of ideas the ultimate universe had was cool. The initial idea of people not knowing if thor was just some crazy nutjob or actually thor was fun, Mr Fantastic becoming an evil super genius was pretty neat, and I personally liked the aftermath of ultimatum for the xmen, where kitty pryde is the leader of the xmen. It really leaned into the Days of Future Past thing really well. So much potential gone to waste.
Great video what a hilarious and over-the-top story this is probably what the MCU X-Men will be like unfortunately as for comics suggestions how about bill willignhan's elementals run from comico... ?
I grew up around the time the ultimate universe was made and I remember seeing the animated movies and the Spider-Man comics so it was kinda big on my childhood
I feel mixed about the Ultimate Comics. I HATE the unhinged nature of these characters that are NOT Ultimate Spider-Man. But as a 2000s Kid, I enjoy their comics for bringing something unique in the pages that is kind of a blueprint for modern superhero works, including the MCU.
Say what you want about other costumes, but magneto's here is freaking perfect for his first villain outing. Can you imagine seeing THAT SUIT in the final scene in days of future past instead of the trash one we got.
The overall plot wasn't too bad, the main issue is Mark Millar's trademark pointless darkness. Jean cheats on Wolverine who is basically committing statutory rape, and we have that other pointless sexual content.
The ultimate Spider-man series, and ultimate Avengers are the two favorites of mine growing up. Captain America was great and Spider-man will always be my favorite.
What makes the ultimate universe special was the different take on its characters from the main universe out of the four main titles 1. Ultimate Spider-Man 2. Ultimate X-Men 3. The Ultimates 4. Ultimate Fantastic Four and any thing else from the year 2000 to 2009 the ultimate universe was amazing the only weak elements from the ultimate universe was the quicksilver and scarlet witch being a couple and brother and sister and the canabolism other than ultimate universe in the 2000s was awesome but ultimate universe in the 2010s was ok at first then they changed all of the ultimates character traits out of no where then reed Richards became bad out of no where then the new X-men set up things but never followed through then miles morales becomes Spider-Man except he has no motivation or personality traits to be a unique Spider-Man and just makes people wish peter Parker was still Spider-Man
@@adrianrocha6844 You’re nostalgia blind you as there are a lot more weak elements to the Ultimate universe that you are letting on. That includes how majority of the characters in the universe are flanderized jerkass versions of their original counterpart, the mutants reinterpretted as being experimented humans for a shadow military operation instead of being the next evolution of human biology, Galactus portrayed as some alien hive mind rather then an eldritch god, and so many more. Basically the whole thing really is just a cheap, edgelord copy of the main universe. Case in point with the difference of the two portrayals of Hank Pym from their reapective universe
@@BigK13372 ok first off yes the characters are a little meaner but they’re not assholes. second mutants being experimented on for a military operations is one of the differences between the main universe and this one they still are victims when they get discriminated. third while the galactus of the ultimate universe will never top his main universe counterpart it does make since considering this was in the 2000s and they were going for a realistic tone while it is edgy it’s not a cheap version of the main universe while I will always pick the main universe over the ultimate universe but that doesn’t mean I don’t like it I will always love it as well hank pym in the ultimate universe is terrible and one of the things I hate is how near the end before he died how people were forgetting what he did but the ultimate universe in the 2010s really sucked there only a couple things I like the death of ultimate Spider-Man, ultimate x, and ultimate comics X-men that’s it the rest is terrible
@@adrianrocha6844 "The Characters are a Little meaner but they're not Assholes" yes yes they are Ultimate Wolverine was a Unrepentant douchebag/Asshole who had a Sexual relationship/affair with Jean Grey and after breaking up he tried to kill Scott by leaving him for dead in the Savage land, He was also a Terrible father figure/mentor to Kitty and Rogue and would have been a bad father had he met his biological son Jimmy Hudson who would have resented him for abandoning him. Ultimate Prof. Charles Xavier is a Terrible person, a Terrible father, a Terrible best friend, and a Terrible Husband/lover It's like the Writers of the Ultimate Universe dialed up all of Charles Xavier's worst character traits from the main Universe/616 and even WORSE he was Attracted to Jean & storm who are Underage. Ultimate Captain America is the BIGGEST douchebag in the Ultimate Universe for a Variety of reasons BUT BIGGEST reason is he indirectly caused the death of the Ultimate Spider-Man due to him and Fury fighting the Punisher, Ultimate cap also is a racist xenophobic bigot who hates Mutants in the Ultimate Universe and rounds them all up to put them in intermittent camps (Which is something the REAL 616 Cap would NEVER do), he basically becomes Hitler, Ultimate cap also misjudged Ultimate Spider-Man for being a fam/ thrill Obsession junkie who was only being hero for the fun of it, Ultimate cap was also a Terrible father Ultimate Nick Fury is Terrible person Who only sees people as pawns to be used and thrown away, unlike his MCU counterpart who takes more inspiration from the 616 version Ultimate Nick Fury is basically the marvel equivalent of Amanda Waller, SHIELD is basically the marvel equivalent of Checkmate & acts a lot more like villains, Ultimate Nick also tried and failed to turn Ultimate Spider-Man into his personal Soldier The first time he threatened to FORCED him by saying "once you turn 17 you will join SHIELD whether you like it or not" The second time was sneaky by trying to convince Miles, Ultimate Nick Fury is also the projector of all of Evil Villains in the Ultimate Universe, Nick Fury is unsympathetic and is the TRUE villain of the Ultimate Universe. Ultimate Magneto is a nazi rather than a holocaust survivor, and is 100% Evil who Kills thousands of innocent people in Ultimatum and kills Charles Xavier. A Majority of the Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men were all unlikable douchebags/Assholes with only a Small minority Being Likeable, sympathetic, and heroic, Ultimate Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Iceman, Nightcrawler, Storm, beast, Cyclops, The Ultimates ONLY Iron Man and Thor were the ONLY redeemable heroes on That Entire team of douchebags, Ultimate Fantastic Four sue, Johnny, and Ben, were fine Honorable Mention of Unlikeable Characters Ultimate Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Wasp (who likes incest), Ultimate hulk, Ultimate Betty ross, Ultimate Jean Grey etc.
I'm a year late but I'm a huge fan of Marvel zombies and they and the Ultimate Fantastic 4 are in it so I slowly got more interested in the Ultimate universe.
The idea of Ultimate comics (a universe without all the continuity stuff) is cool. Or it would be if it didn’t feel like it was written by a middle school boy for maximum edginess and maxium perviness.
X Men Cyclops Marvel Girl Angel Beast IceMan Professor X BrotherHood Of Mutants Magneto Scarlet Witch QuickSilver Toad Blob Pyro Original X-Men Villains The JuggerNaut The Vanisher Unus The Untouchable Lucifer Maa-Gor The Stranger The story could focus primarily on the original battles of the X-Men and BrotherHood Of Mutants but with a retelling with the original villains being remade and retold.
Because it was hype and new when I was a kid and an occasion to jump on an X-men book with no baggage... yet even as a ten year old a lot of it was disappointing. Beast and Gambit were my favorites from the animated show, one gets the worst storyline and is killed off early while the second barely make any appearance in the book... For the rest it's kind of a blur.
I enjoyed it, but there is NO denying that there are dome glaring issues. I think worls decently as an origin. But some this shig in this comic is pretty wack
I actually liked ultimate x men once it got rolling. It was awkward in how it handled some elements, but it hit at the right time for what it was doing.
IMO ultimate x is the 4th best of the ultimate comics.(not really saying much considering) Becomes shit halfway through when they do stupid shit like “cable is wolverine from the future”. Ultimate avengers is the second best ultimate comic and after is ultimate ff. And let’s not forget the avengers one is kinda important since it heavily inspired the look/story/character of the mcu.(and magneto lifting a bridge in the third movie/reprogramming sentinels in dofp and 17:48) Trust me if you’dve read more of ultimate fantastic 4 you’d see I’m right how good it is. i also kinda admire this era of comics before all comics not image/indie/etc are pc nowadays
@-Attack of the youtube copyright Ultimate X-Men became after the first 3 volumes when the writers decided to Rehash classic X-Men BUT with a Modern twist that unsurprisingly BACKFIRED and the books never recovered because until the book was Canceled as a result of Ultimatum, IMO the thing that really ruined Ultimate X-Men was all of the unnecessary changes made to the Characters It's like the writers flanderized The X-Men's WORST character traits & turned them into unlikable douchebags, Case in point Wolverine, Charles Xavier, Jean Grey, Magneto, Mystique, etc. With ONLY a small minority of the X-Men being Likeable and Heroic like Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm, beast, Cyclops, and few others.
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" was more faithful to the comics than I initially thought. Sure it was this mess, but I'll give them points for doing the research.
Yea i hate the ultimates with a passion Okay I get wolverine is old as hell, but can we just acknowledge male intrest in teenage girls is just a natrual occurrence
You're curious about ice man's clothes but not curious about how he biologically produces ice, not hard ice, but flexible ice that morphs and moves around as he moves around. It's not like it's magic. But somehow the clothes got your attention. This is why I think it's stupid when people try to sound smart by rationalizing superpowers in a fictional story. Suspend your disbelief or go read an autobiography 🤷🏽♂️
Hey, the biggest sin in the Ultimate Universe? No not Ultimatum, not Incest is Wincest with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Logan did not get his own solo ongoing title...
