One time I ran out of wheat berries so I did one third wheat berries one third hemp seeds and one third white rice and it worked lol

Rye is widely available across the US from grain/seed/feed supply stores. They're a choice grain for race horses and probably a lot of show animals. Some pet stores sell them too. If it's a big box product (where the bag isn't stitched for you) just make sure it's 100% rye. If you're in the northern hemisphere you can probably source these locally as they're grown from east to west, historically sold as a hartier, farmer friendly alternative to wheat. They definitely require an exact moisture level to avoid contamination caused by condensation or dryness. If you eat a plant based diet they make for a great staple grain too; boil them like you would beans and eat over rice. Very very good for you.

Hey @ willysmyco I got a question for you. So I seen bulk fruits get a good field capacity across the substrate. I've seen others that are gabbie in between the substrate n leaves you a open area with no fruits.. so how would I get that full capacity? When fruiting. I'm I going to have to have a good gene?clone?substrate??

Great vid and awesome overview of the spawn. Here is my experience with wbs and Millet: I started on wbs and now I have since moved to pure white millet. I get a 50lb bag locally for $29. What I like about millet over WBS is that it seems to be more durable in the long run because of the seed-like shell. WBS gets soft and eventually releases water as the weeks go on if your mycelium do not colonize it fast enough. Also a shake can cause the seeds to release water and mess up the whole jar. Since switching to white millet, I have pretty much solved this problem. I also like how easy it is to spot contam on white millet. The whole millet grain turns a different color and it makes it really easy to spot. So far I have seen Green and purple contam appear on millet. The other awesome thing I like about white Millet is that I put it in the blender and grind it down to a fine powder and then use it to make BRF or in this case MF (Millet Flour) jars. I noticed that my millet flour jars are colonizing faster than my BRF jars. This is a great second use for a 50lb bag of millet and a great bonus!

Ive actually had EXTREME success with Whole Brown Rice. Whole process to hyphal knotting has taken less than 2 and a half weeks.

Newbie here. I’m using white millet and it seems to be working really good I couldn’t find any Last run so I went to Walmart and bought some stuff with some sunflowers and millet in it and just washed it really good I’m not sure how it will work but I heard it works just the same so I can actually save money doing that I’m thinking of trying popcorn but it really cost more, if this $20 bag from Walmart works good I’m just gonna switch to that, the white millet stuff is like 40 bucks for a 40 pound bag. Anyway if anyone has any suggestions I’m all ears as I watch this video, This dude is awesome his advice is amazing. Ps I had Jipson and it helps a little bit with the green sticking plus I heard it’s sort of like the fertilizer for the mycelium and mushrooms. I literally just formulated the needs of mushrooms and concocted this chunk of wisdom: Basidiomycetes, such as our chosen fungal species, endophytically extract polysaccharides from organic matter to create cells of chitin and glucans which are glucose-based. Thus, the substrate should be high in glucose which comes in four forms: 1) starch, 2) cellulose, 3) laminarin, and 4) beta-glucans. The sources of such glucans are, respectively, a. high starch, e.g.: potato, rice, wheat, and corn; b. high cellulose, e.g.: straw, wood, paper, and cotton; c. high laminarin, e.g.: brown algae aka kelp; d. high β-glucan, e.g.: rolled oats (oatmeal), oat bran, whole oat flour, oatrim (the soluble fraction of alpha-amylase hydrolyzed oat bran or whole oat flour), whole grain barley, and barley beta-fiber. Hope that helps. I spent days compiling this chunk of wisdom.

I put the birdseed in a grinder and powderize it I mix it 50/50 with brown rice flour then 50/50 with vermiculite add my water just to let dampens it off really good to a decent sponge not too wet not too dry load up my jars and sterilize them this way gives me up to 5 and 6 flushes and very potent mushrooms.

How much grain per pound of bulk substrate? I've seen people use as little as a cup full for a 5 pound block.

is there a difference between white vs. red millet or preference in your experience? I have a lot of left over supply I like to use as a grain spawn of white millet.

Has anyone ever tried to use chicken feed for grain spawn? Its a lot less expensive than other grains. I just don't know if it has the right nutrients. Also will the mushrooms fruit off of popcorn and rye berries?

I'm new to mushroom cultivation. You kept talking about how the grain could rupture and the center of the grain may not be sterilized. If they have gone through pressure sterilization, the centers will have gotten to high enough temperatures to kill contaminants, so what kind of contaminants are you suggesting might live through pressure sterilization?

i just checked, it is possible to buy feed wheat from many sellers in a 15 mile distance from my home. The price is 16$ per 100 kg (220lbs), I don't think there is anything cheaper than this.

I'm very, very, very new to this...bear with me please. So, instead of using a brown rice flour AND vermiculite, I can use JUST a wild bird seed mix OR mix the wild bird seed WITH my vermiculite? And, should I grind my wild bird seed into a fine powder or what?

I tried wbs soaked over night cleaned and always seem to mold. Not sure if they are too damp. Tried drying them on towel too but not sure what I am doing wrong.

I seem to have better luck on rice and rye than popcorn. No matter what I do with popcorn it just contams or the mycelium doesn't seem to do well. But other things seems to work better. Running a no soak no simmer test on long grain rice, hoping it doesnt go pear shaped. Good channel mate keep at it :)

WBS all day, cheap, available everywhere, a bunch of inoculation points and myc eats it up fast. Wbs seems to colonize faster than any other grain.. Then whole oats, cheap...50lb for $14 and works great

i found that the cheap wbs is not worth it since when washing it i loose at least 1/3 of what i started w/ , but slightly higher priced wbs ( pennington ect ; ) i dont see 1/2 as much waste ... great video Willy , from the Northshore ..'''!!!

I'm trying to do feed corn right right now washed cracked corn then soaked it in water with a cap of hydrogen peroxide over night then rinsed it the next morning and simmered it for 45 minutes on low after that I packed it in a pint jar like a cake pressure cooker it for 60 minutes then innoculated it with a mycelium syringe just put it in the terrarium will keep posted on results

Why would a popcorn kernel not sterilize? You should pc it long enough for the heat to get into the core right?

Amazon free shipping 30 bucks 25lbs for rye berries. Use gypsum , never tried anything else like bird seed but I can see it would be more inoculation points.

I had to skip the entire popcorn section. I couldn't get over "pupppcorn".

Honestly bro, pupcorn has been working best for me. Easy to sterilize ime honestly if you cook the popcorn rather than soak it and then pressure cook it for 90 minutes I use an instapot so I do 2 hours and I haven't had any contams in my spawn jars using it yet. Colonizes nice and strong too maybe not the fastest but I noticed the mycelium for golden teachers grows super thick and beautifulots of rhizomorhpic growth it seems like they mycelium is extra excited for popcorn the way it reaches out and stuff. I bad at explaining shit lol

Soooo I'm a noob and I just figure after ALLL the research I've done. I came up with 1 part 🐎 💩 1 🐄 💩 1 regular substrate and 1 5 grain and 1 rye berry and it's been working very well. Idk 🤷‍♂️ but seems to be working with all species so far
