What Is The Best Holzfforma , Best Farmertec Saw Chassis & Best Saw Chain For Me? C83, RS or LGX

A little reflection of several years working with and on the Farmertec brand saws and parts. A new g395 throws a wrench into all that as it may push the g660 off that perch.
Also a short discussion on chain for my world. Hand filing isn't my thing, not enough patience. So often it's just best to get a new chain vs. hand file. A time thing
Ok. It's 2023 now. I can say without hesitation for the work I do, a Holzfforma g392 is the best clone saw for my work. Ran one for most of this years logging operations, it has earned 10K plus. I did change a piston as the early sample of the g395 had a manufacturing issue with their pistons. Straight wall, constant diameter vs. the required .007" taper. They rattled and had I not changed it would have failed. Farmertec fixed that. Sent me a new piston to check and it was good. Had i now had to replace the piston that would be the SECOND Farmertec/Holzfforma that needed nothing from the box to be a work saw, the g888 being the first.

I agree. After you build an ms 660 kit, you can build any kit. My first kit was the ms 660 and it is still running fine. That was four years ago. The hardest part is getting the crank and case halves together. I must have watched Walt and Matt Olsen’s videos a thousand times. After that, the next hardest part of the assembly is the chain break. Walt help me with some of the chain break assembly. After you build the 660 you can put any kit together, although there are some minor differences between the various models. I later even built a 372XP and it was slightly different but I had learned my lessons well. I have my own procedures and use them from saw to saw. They must be pretty good, because all seven of my kits saws are still running. Walt helped me straighten out the control lever problems of the early ms 660 kit saws, but my last kits worked fine without replacing a lot of these parts with oem parts. My next kit will be the Stihl 200T kit if I can find one, or maybe the 038/380 kit.

I call it storage condition instead of drying them out, but same thing. I crank them up and let them warm up. I then cut them off and drain all the gas from them. I then add a little FD gas to the tank if they are not already filled with FD gas, crank them up and let them idle to a stop. FD gas is premium non-ethanol gas with JASO FD oil in the gas. Good examples are Echo Red Armor, Power Blend Gold and Husqvarna XP oil. Stihl does not make an FD oil. Always look for the FD logo on the two cycle oil you use. It is the best two cycle oil specification.

I have a lot of the same clone saws as you, my g466 tops my 660 as it does everything I would do with the 660 but with less weight.

Yeah man… depending upon your use… those little 5800 johncutter saw’s are very impressive for the price! Your cyclops has been around the world for sure… I just love that if you are 1/2 way mechanical that you can cut a ton of wood for less investment then your OEM choices… the 395 with a 2100 crank as a stoker is one awesome project!!! And there’s not a lot of those floating around…gotta be a saw nut to go those trenching them case’s! LMFFAO!

You are spot on with the chain discussion. The part that is bothersome is: A friend recommends a great restaurant their is alot of great reviews so you and the wife go and eat there. On this night the service was terrible, it took an hour to get cold food. Your quote unquote "experience" was bad, nevermind the circumstances that occured with the restuarant staff that caused 50 people to have a bad "experience" that night even though thousands before and after had a fantastic "experience" you now tell everyone the restaurant is bad based on that one night. I have used the Husqvarna C-83 chain in every type of cutting situation in all types of wood for going on 5 years now, in that time I have gone through close to 200 loops and given several to others to try. Out of all those loops I have had 4 loops that did not cut well out of the box and 1 that the cutters were work hardened to the point they could only be sharpened with a grinder. I have experienced the same thing with several brands of chains, some real bad. From my "Experience" (if I may qualify it as such ;) I find 2 issues for me with the C-83 & C-85: 1: the stock profile cuts very well, it's smooth, holds a sharp edge very well, but is hard for alot of folks to maintain the profile so they just round file it modifying it from what the factory intended, it may then cut faster in the cross cut but will fall behind in all other felling cuts. 2. It is not yet available in full skip. I sharpen chains sometimes everyday 7 days a week. Having to sharpen 1/2 as many cutters Far outways any percieved gains of full sequence chain. All this being said the C-83 is not my go to chain. I run the absolute worst cutting out of the box chain I have ever bought in full skip. Dare I say many folks would have a bad experience with this chain. I square file it (taking the gullet out, sharpening it to promote chip flow, call it chip shute, chip dump whatever I sharpen the whole tooth! So that it cuts the best in all situations. It has proven to be the longest lasting (4x any oregon chain I have used in the past 32 years, so that = 4x less sharpening 4x less purchasing of chain and more timber on the ground between sharpening $$$$ if I do my part in staying out of the dirt. It works very well in all cutting situations. I will continue to try new chains as they come available always looking to improve. Dare I say as someone who has spent a considerable part of my life working with saw chains every day I find the opinions based on very limited experiences branded as "experience" to be annoying! Keep an open mind and try that restaurant again so that your experience/opinion, comes from a more expert view. Sorry to rant on your channel Walt but I get the sense you may be the only one looking at this topic through a broader lense that will ultimately serve many more folks better. We must continue to ask ourselves who are we serving with our content and comments? Are we serving them well? Maybe other folks just like sharpening chain more than I do and I am misinterpreting their intentions. Thank you for sharing your experience on the aftermarket saws from that same lense.

Thank you BTW for sharing YOUR experience as well. I guess at this point in my life I just shoot off the mouth based on what's in my heart. I see so many follow the herd online, so often I'm out of sync with the current online fad or hype in everything from saw brands to oils. No pride here just documenting life. I'll try anything within reason, obviously as I've messed with the clone saws. And did spend a few years focused on hand filing to perfection relative to a saw.... now see there is a point of diminishing returns there for me with the cutting I'm doing now. But that's just me.

I don't trust the C-83/C-85 because it doesn't have the oil galleys on the drive links. Is this just perception or do you notice anything here?

But they do, flip your chain over. It's an actual channel on one side. Prolly to beat "patents". SO far I've heard a bunch of stuff that actually didn't match my experience on those chains. And they act pretty much like elx..I run both

I run the c83/85 on the 28inch bars with my smaller saws. Does an excellent job, very smooth on the plunge cut , not too aggressive to drag down the power on the smaller 565 70cc class saws. Plus I can get it cheap.

I would have said the same up until this year. The MS660 sorted out is easier to live with for sure. Side chain adjust, weight etc. But after I put in that piston, I have worked the g395 pretty much non stop. It's a solid machine, I've had NO goofy little issues. No "high idle" issues like on the 660, no issues with rubber stuff like fuel lines, no soft bar studs. Just a real solid performer so far. I did have to change the "soft" muffler bolts, and the first ones had a dimensionally incorrect piston which they resolved, but other than that....nothing. :) Cut a LOT of timber with mine

Hey big guy, I recently started a nice chainsaw collection, started this summer. I'm doing well with acquiring saws and rebuilding, fixing, and now modifying them thanks to you, Harvey, and Tinman . I have a 70e without the rear top handle with the throttle assembly with it. I was wondering if you possibly could help me out with the handle and I'll buy it or we could swap some parts !? If you're interested in trading or selling the piece I am looking for. I will definitely be taking great care of you for your time help and of course your time...

It's not practical at all! I'm a fire wood guy, but I own 16 saws. I built a 372 clone because it was fun, and used a Hutzl set of cases to rebuild a 2163 that had a broken case. Its about having fun and getting a bit of work done too. One thing for sure, a guy better have a bit of mechanical skills to live with a Chinese saw. Hard to beat OEM reliability if you can only have one saw.

Will the G372xp saws hold up if your not increasing the compression? I am a landowner and have a bandsaw mill. I heat with wood and my G372xp has been good thus far. I Have the itch to go another direction but not sure where to go yet. Thanks for your videos!

I would recommend a g660 with the understanding a bunch of little stuff needs to be added to the mix, but me? I would get the g395 and stuff a better piston in it at this point. I can't recommend that g395 simply because I have no idea how it's going to hold up over time. And it's got some PITA things for day to day living as they all do. For a Pro, I will always recommend OEM. Period . End Stop

@@afleetcommand I've heard meteor makes pretty decent pistons. Think a g395 + meteor piston (+ whatever might be defective) would be enough to get started with? This is NOT for professional use, just an ambitious landowner that cuts a lot of wood. If a saw breaks down it doesn't cramp my style too much. I'd prefer the husky to the stihl, but i'm not necessarily OPPOSED to the 660 either. Sorry for the basic questions.. thats just a lot of money for ke for a "toy" and you've handled more saws in the last year than I probably will in my life. Unless I continue down this rabbit hole :-D

I have just purchased a 660kit. What woulg you recommend to make it bulletproof. If you have the time to point me in the correct direction i would appreciate it.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 9 месяцев назад
Have touched one since 2019, if things are as they were, bullet proof is impossible as it is with even an OEM saw. The things I changed are in the video's. Think I did a summary video a few years back. Things like bar studs, chain adjusters, the throttle trigger & choke controls need to be replaced with OEM on mine. I replaced the handle bar & brake levers as well as they were soft. Also replaced the throttle plates in the carbs. Maybe best to find a used Walbro and rebuild it. There were three suppliers of carbs, some better than others so that is a moving target. And the rubber parts line intake boot, pulse & fuel lines didn't stand up so I replaced all of that to OEM. Had to get the torque right on the flywheel nut. or the flywheels would spin. Things like the bearings, seals, cases were fine. I also upgraded the bar oil pump, the chain brake parts and clutch drums. My suggestion is if u want to go clone and want a big saw, start with a g395 :) They come pretty solid right out of the box. OR build a 288. Also with a few parts needed up grade like bar oil pumps are starting from a better place. The 660's I did build ALL still are running, that is a bit amazing to me. A lot of the online crap about seals cranks top ends etc. didn't pan out as the 54mm top end while ugly...lasted. Same with the cranks, bearings, seals, etc. f I was to do another I would prolly do as I did in the past with a Meteor 54 mm top end or used OEM because they look better. But my point is by the time you put that kind of change into a kit to make it "bullet proof", better use of that money is a blue g395 where its a starting point way better to build from.

I build my own. Did a few for testing the concept and for the video channel. Don't build to sell or build for pay to others with these clone saws. If you are in NYS find Barry Lyndaker Up in Beaver Falls' in the Adirondacks. I think he's dealing with those. I don't do any sales, builds, or service direct.

Its too bad and a little surprising that the G372 series always had problems. For such a popular model of saw you would think farmertec would invest in improving the manufacturing process so they can actually be a source for good quality AM parts, they would be able to move product volume. Quality is a overall concept, its not just one part its the whole system and in that regard the farmertec saws have always been "poor quality".
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand Год назад
Understand I put more hard time in my testing program than most will put on them in a life time so my opinion is skewed. I put all my 372 clones in pro logger hands and they all died with a variety of bottom end failures. BUT if you follow the channel I try over and over to articulate that is my and my "testers" experiences. Most will never see that much hard time and may never see one of those bottom end failures.
@samzeng159
@samzeng159 Год назад
@@afleetcommand Its just kinda of a shame considering how close they are, who knows maybe the G288, G395 or the G888 can lean into that pro world, maybe not as durable as OEM but be a value option. Also no to mention the AM repair factor.
