Why do we use playmats and which ones are the best for Magic: The Gathering and other gaming TCGs? This video offers a detailed compare and contrast of the four major brands: Dragon Shield, Inkedplaymats.com, Khalsa Brain Games, and Ultra PRO.
A lot of players make the mistake of thinking that a playmat is a luxury accesory. They look cool, can have artwork that the player likes, and possibly help define your game space on the table. But these are merely perks to the real reason we use a playmat, which is: to keep our cards clean. This is the criteria you should be using above all else, not whether or not it has awesome art on it, but instead whether or not it acheives the overall goal of protecting your investment.
If you liked the inkedplaymat.com mat I featured, it was designed by "Mythic Mats" and his collection of artwork for playmats can be viewed and bought here: www.inkedplaymats.com/collecti...

I recommend a tube protecter that wraps around your tube to protect it while it protects your mat which protects your sleeves which protects your cards.

Also remember to use an inner sleeve and a stasis container to put your tube and quadruple-sleeved sleeves while you are not using them.

One use of a playmat that I haven't seen mentioned, and the primary reason I bought a playmat, is that it's easier to pick cards up off a playmat than it is to pick them off a table. Without a playmat I find it difficult to pick cards up off a table and I feel like I'm risking damaging the cards. With a playmat I can pick cards up with ease.

If you go to a professional magician's shop, you can get close-up pads. These are like playmats, but thicker and larger, with a softer foam backing so your fingers can get up under the cards. Parlor magicians use these to make sure they can consistently lift cards for sleight-of-hand tricks, and they're a hell of a lot better than anything you can get at an LGS.

I'd also note that I recently got a playmat at GP Sacramento, and compared to my inked playmat I bought not very long ago, it is fairly thick in comparison to their inked playmat counterparts. This is really nice for someone like me with really meaty fingers that has a hard time picking up cards (and is one of the primary reasons that I use playmats)

Professor, I have bought a dragon shield mat, it came out of the box in perfect condition, no wrinkles, no imperfections, nothing wrong with the quality of it. The only issue with it I have is that one you've rolled it up a few times, when you roll it up it starts to try and open out, it can be easily fixed with a mat tubes, and for a person of my size being broad shouldered and quite the perfectionist for space, this mat is the perfect size, the tables we use at my local card shop is just perfect to fit two of these, one for each player.

I got a great deal on my playmat. I went to my first prerelease (for 2015, just last week!) and they had Ultra Pro mats for 10 dollars. Got a nice Angel one to match my choice of White for the pre-release. At first I wasn't interested in a playmat, but the store I played at has them sitting on the tables at the event and they actually work great as a way to keep your play area yours. I really like using one now.

I actually have found those generic playmats on eBay to be quite fine. So far, I have not noticed significant wear, they are nice and big, and seem easy to keep clean. I personally find the artwork on the ultra pro playmats to look cool but prefer a plain black background to play on. I love this channel though. Most MTG channels just have people opening booster boxes or packs, which is neat enough to see the cards I guess, but beyond that, pointless. I actually learn good information here. Keep it up, professor!

I absolutely adore the Spellground mats by KB Games. If you can afford the $200-$300 for the originals(from 94), it's worth every penny, and if you only want to spend the $30-$60 for new mats, they are quite nice as well. I used to own a crimson(red) mat, and the new seasons line are quite nice as well.

I actually feel the dragon shield ones are best for a few reasons that you actually said they where bad for haha. 1. the large size is great the ultrapro ones are way to small for me i cant fit my game onto it wether im playing edh or a 60 card format. theres just not enough space on the ultrapro ones i often have to put cards on the table next to them 2. i like simple art on my playmats that doesnt destract. 3. the rolled up pr wrinkled feel yours had isnt a universal thing i have 2 and both came out flat

You make me want to take better care of my cards. I'd always considered double-sleeving and playmats to be overkill (I remember a pro calling out people who brought playmats to GPs for being "noobs"), but the reasoning in these videos is sound, and I do listen to logic above all else. Thanks for changing my opinion!

i have been using a world of Warcraft Cryptozoic mat for a long time now, and it has no visible afflictions, feels great, does not slide and has a rather nice design (Battleground master achievement ftw) almost every ultra pro i have seen at my local game store has faded or had some kinda fraying at the edges (maby i look after mine more, i just roll it and stuff it in my laptop bag along with all the other boxes and MTG stuff i take with me.

Another great thing not mentioned in the video about inked playmats is that they come in a durable, reusable tube that protects your mat, alleviating having to by a monster/UP tube. Also the old KB spellground mats can run upwards of $200-$300 dollars for the old two player mats. Even the single player mats are expensive. Good to hear that they will be coming out with more!

***** Yeah, I wish I had talked more about Inked, as they are now my Playmat of choice, but it was an early video and I wasn't yet grading every single item. Maybe I need to do a followup. Professor, i made an total different experience with the dragonshield playmats. I bought my dragonshield mat (as far as i remember) 5 years ago and i use it up to 3 days a week since i bought it. I always roll it and it never ever looks like yours. Maybe it's different from product to product? About the size of the mat, i love to have a little bit of extra space on the table for many of my decks. But its true that it dosn't fit on any table in any game-shop. In my opinion its a "B"

Well, in a situation that I have, a tube makes sense for keeping my playmat in good condition, because when I go to school, I keep my mat in my backpack with my books, and it can get cramped in there, and while constantly pulling out books and putting them back in, the mat unravels, twists around, and can even be squished to the bottom when I toss a textbook in there. The tube can prevent unraveling and stop the playmat from being pushed around.
@ZackFreedman

I actually was surprised that you didnt go over homemade playmats. many players are either talented with a sewing machine, or have leftover place settings their grandmothers may have made them. I use one myself. The only issue i have with it is that its a tad small, especially for commander gameplay. But thats easily fixable. Other than that, every time i pull it out, i get a ton of compliments (then again it has pikachu on it) and its machine washable quite easily. I can fold it for simple storage at the bottom of my bag, and its easily able to be customized depending on your skills or the makers skills at a sewing machine/loom. That and its actually cheaper to do this than it is to just buy a playmat, depending on the amount of free time you have.

I've always found the concept of a playmat to be a little weird.. I mean, protecting the sleeves that are meant to protect your cards? :S But I can see the appeal, especially when faced with horrible tables at a prereleased.. Like bulging/dented, and somewhat abrasive, tables make your cards slide or just not stay put. And mats feel nice and fuzzy.. :3 But I've only recently decided to venture forth from my cave, and attempt to travel to a LGS... So I need a playmat. I want Dryad Arbor artwork on it... But the art isn't wide enough.. :S

Would it be possible for you to do a review on playmat tubes? In the TCG community I'm part of, they're pretty standard, and used as much for storage and transport as they are for protection. That being said, I've had more than one playmat tube crack on me before, and I've seen some made of thicker or thinner plastic, not to mention to variety of one or two openings. I know Ultra Pro, Monster, and RFG all make some, but the info I get about the differences tends to be rather scattered.

I personally use monster. Monster playmat holder. Monster deck box. Monster dice bag and monster binder. While using kmc sleeves. All are white.

One minor observation: Many playmats use latex in the mix. If you have an allergy, you may want to double-check first. That microfiber one does strike me as a potential boon for those with latex allergies.

Sean Riley Fabulous advice, I'm sorry that I did not mention that in this review. Checking with the manufacturer just now, the Khalsa Brain playmat is indeed latex free.

Question about rolling playmats.. shouldn't the rubber be outside? if you roll with the cloth outside wouldn't it come into contact with the rubber which came into contact with the dirty table? Or should these mats be machine washed after every use?

Ryuji Pabila I noticed that today. Doesn't matter on what side You roll your play mat always make contact with the dirty side. I don't know why all people rolls his play mats or use one if they don't wash it every day.

When I wash my playmat, do I throw it in the drier as well? Also, what settings should my washer and\or drier be on when performing this task?

I bought my first playmat on September 23rd, 2006. Time Spiral Prerelease. It was the exact same dragon shield playmat you show, but in green. It was in perfect condition, no need to iron or anything. I haven't buy other since that day. It still is in perfect condition. This is the first time I disagree with a review of the Professor, maybe a recent defective batch?

Hey professor, I was about to purchase some legion sleeves, and noticed that they sold play mats as well. Could you review play mats by legion?

Heh, funny I got a dragon shield mat since I have started and have never come into any major problems when it was new. A corner was a bit bent but nothing more

Mat daddy is awesome. I got one on amazon for 12 bucks and it comes with a tube for the mat. It's a mono colored mat with no design but it's perfect definitely large enough for play.

I absolutely love my Dragon Shield mat, but I will concede that I haven't had much opportunity to try anything else
