Perhaps you should look at Dazcat! Seriously, performance is a Dazcat. I can't believe how many people talk about performance cat's without saying Dazcat.
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN Год назад
Dazcat is definitely on the higher end of the performance spectrum, probably too close to 'racing' to be considered by most liveaboards who are looking for fast and relatively safe cruising. We did not mention some other high performance boat manufacturers for the same reason.

Outremer’s are awesome boats and the 55 made our shortlist as well. The one critical attribute you didn’t mention though was hull construction & materials. There’s a significant cost and quality difference between a gel coat polyester boat (like the Outremer) and the Carbon Fiber/Epoxy cats that HH & Balance 526 are made from, in the end it’s all a series of compromises for sure & you have to draw the line somewhere. Looking forward to seeing the new model of Outremer & watching your build process!

@@SailingAWEN Looking forward to hearing all about it, there is no doubt this new model is going to be wildly popular as the O55 is on the borderline of just being too big for a couple. All the innovation going on in the industry is great for us consumers!
@burddog0792
@burddog0792 Год назад
Obviously I can see that you have bought the O52, and this boat wasn't out yet; but, the new HH 52 OC is around the same price, or so HH claims. You can get the OC with fiberglass 'cruising' dagger boards too. Both are (will be) probably the best performance cruisers out there without going to a smaller more custom company like Windelo, or let's be honest Balance. The O45 has been around a while now, so I wonder if Outremer has a new boat up their sleeves, O47 or what have you. Seawind seems like a good company too, but seem to be focusing more on the performance without dagger boards (apart from the 1600 obviously). I wonder if SW would maybe make a 1500 or something, basically a bigger 1370 with boards and the retractable rudders. SW boats are able to be beached so that's a cool little feature they have.
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN Год назад
Thank you for your comment... When comparing boat prices it's very important for people to price all the options in and not just look at the base price given by the manufacturer ;-) I would consider Windelo and Balance as semi-custom manufacturers, just like Outremer and HH. In our opinion, for a catamaran to be considered a performance cruiser you need to have daggerboards, everything else is a compromise. The word 'performance' is very loosely used by many boat companies nowadays. While being able to beach your boat sounds good on paper, it is not something you can do very often unless you are very familiar with the area and the local conditions so we would not consider this feature as a priority requirement.
@burddog0792
@burddog0792 Год назад
@@SailingAWEN What I mean is that Outremer and HH are bigger established companies, who may offer more support adding to the ownership experience. Windelo or Balance might have more 'paper dream boat' appeal, but they come with less support (in addition to higher boat cost because everything is an expensive option). It's like owning a Lamborghini over a Pagani. I don't consider beaching as a practical thing either, it's more of just a flex, kind of like 'all HH can fly a hull'.

Great video. Exactly the thought process I’ve been going through over the last year. I also spoke to Outremer about the ‘new 51’. Have been drawn towards the balance 482 which we test sailed but probably 482 and O52 too much budget for us. Was hoping Outremer would have had a replacement for O45 but that didn’t seem to be the case so we were drawn to B442 but I am concerned about reality of load carrying capacity and that the extra money buying a ‘performance cat’ may well be lost when we load her up. Would love to consider the O52 or B482 but it would be a real stretch for us. Love to get your thoughts on all that.
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN 2 года назад
Hi Richard, I totally get your concern. We didn’t look at the B442 because we ruled out boats under 48 feet because of the desire to have 3T with performance. The O45 is actually 48 feet so it stayed in but the displacement delta is tight for our requirements at 2.4T. I will tell you that people do it and love that boat so it just depends on what you want to put on it. La Vaga does it as do many others so i think that at 48 would be better than a 44 foot boat. The B442 is 44 feet and the math assumptions we are working under don’t align. All said and done we chose Outremer because we loved the boat but also because we have confidence in their after sales and warranty service which is a big deal, and everything else you get in training etc, which you really need on these boats. Hope this helps! - Holly

@richardhill3035 2 года назад
@@SailingAWEN thanks for the thoughts Holly. Would you share your calculations for getting to the 3T you want to carry plus the displacements that you feel boats need to get to in order to comfortably carry that without affecting performance? I definitely find that really helpful. Maybe the subject of a whole video!! Thanks again
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN 2 года назад
@@richardhill3035 We definitely plan on doing a video about weight as we load our boat next year. Based on our own experience with our first boat and talking to other performance owners who have been focused on weight it can be quite surprising how much everything adds up, especially for cruisers. Our 3T is a ball park estimate with some input from other performance cruisers. You want narrow hulls to be able to sail in light air and get good performance but those narrow hulls will sink quickly in the water with too much weight so it's best to start from a longer boat if possible to give yourself more loading capacity. We've made some big weight cuts with no generator, super light dinghy/outboard... but we find ourselves considering more and more options somehow ;-)
@richardhill3035
@richardhill3035 2 года назад
@@SailingAWEN that tempting options list!! You probably have it, but when I spoke to Outremer about the O45 they gave me an options list with a column for price and a column with weight, and a max they recommended... so if you wanted the Aircon it showed you €.X and Y.Kg, pretty useful but also highlighted how important they viewed this. Look forward to your future videos... great to see your project coming together.

Great video! I'm curious, what kept the HH44-SC off of your list?
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN 2 года назад
Great question! The boats that made the short list were a combination of performance and ability to carry 3T of weight with some level of value relative to the other boats. We have friends who have a 44 foot light displacement boat and they have to be really careful what they put on it to get the performance out of it. For us deciding on a new boat, it would have to be different enough to make the change worth it for the cost/effort of switching boats and we need the 3T to not be obsessing about weight during a circumnavigation. The O45 is 48 LWL and the SW1370 had a published load of around 3T at 44LWL, but, we have heard it's actually heavier in the end so you don't get to 3T (that's the rumor, don't know if this is fact or not). The SW1370 would not have made our shortlist with that logic but the price was more reasonable so we kept it in to try to verify the weight. Of the HH boats, the 50+DB and 55 were more in line with the performance/3T requirement we had, but the price is outside of our budget. They are very nice boats for sure. Thanks for the question and thank you for watching! - Holly

Thank you Rob! Beware, if you try, you’ll want to buy 😏 We highly recommend to do a test sail of those boats, of any boat for that matter (beware of boat shows instead). Holly wasn’t convinced she would notice the differences with our previous boat. After 2 sailing days, one in 5-7 knots of wind and the other in 22-25 knots and confused seas she was hooked. The boat inspired confidence to her, and now she’s loving the sailing part of it. It really is a sailors’ boat first, which is the type of boats you want for a circumnavigation program like ours, or if you simply want to experience joy every time you go out ⛵️😁

@@SailingAWEN lovely to hear from you Stephane. I would love to try an Outremer one day, but until those lottery numbers come in or I get a book deal for my children’s books, I can’t afford even a second hand 45 or 51. In my budget I can afford a 3 year old FP Astrea 42, which is top of my wish list. I have twice chartered an Elba 45 in Croatia and loved this boat, but I don’t need a boat that big. It’s only me at the moment with occasional visits from my children. I am hoping the Universe will find me a girlfriend to come away sailing with me, once I get the boat next year! 🤞 I am really grateful to you and Holly for your videos and podcasts. Yesterday on a walk I was listening to the one about property and maintaining a base camp/home , which is very helpful as I am also making this decision at the moment as to how to fund the boat purchase. I like your idea of downsizing and buying a rental property, so you can get some income while you are sailing. Really good idea. I am aiming to rent out my main house on a long let and live in a self contained annex when not on the boat. But selling the house and buying a small property that can be rented out is also a good option and yesterday, in true Holly form, it sparked a lot of internet research on property sites! Anyway, this reply will turn into a podcast if I am not careful , so thanks again for helping inspire us dreaming sailors. Congratulations on securing hull no. 4 of the new O 52. I look forward to seeing the reveal when Outremer are ready to lift the curtain. I am excited for you and I am sure a year will go by quickly if you stay busy! Hope to meet you one day at a show or on a beautiful anchorage. A bien tôt. X
