"What is / was the best tank in the world" is a commonly asked question, especially when pertaining to modern main battle tanks. So, which is it? The T-14 Armata? The Leopard 2? M1 Abrams? Challenger 2? Well, I think the true answer is a little more nuanced than that. In fact, I'm not sure it's an answer you can find at all, most certainly not by comparing stats like armor thickness, armor penetration, power to weight ratio, etc.

Why industrial water tanks are the best tanks. 1) provides enough water to keep a whole entire battalion away from dehydration. 2) little to no people shoot at it. 3) amazing view from up top to see enemies clearly 4) Very useful all around different climates. 5) Can be easily built, and less expensive

Exactly. This applies to all sorts of military gear. Say, for instance, the Sten submachine gun of WW2, basically a pipe with a trigger and magazine. Not well sealed and horribly unergonomic. Sounds bad right? Except for the fact that Britain had a critical shortage of subguns at the start of the war and needed something that could be cranked out in numbers quickly. So considering its origins, role and objectives, it did fantastically well. Same with camouflage. There's no "best camouflage" because different countries have different terrain and different tactics.
@hedgehog3180
@hedgehog3180 4 года назад
Also with the Sten it's incredibly simple design meant that resistance cells could actually manufacture these. You could literally build them from the ground up using bike shop equipment and with kits supplied by the UK they could easily be manufactured by small cells. In most of Western Europe the Sten is almost legendary because of this and rivals the Spitfire for most iconic WWII weapon. None of it's downsides really mattered because it gave the resistance a secret weapon that suddenly meant that they had more firepower than your average German soldier who was using a bolt action rifle in the settings where they came to blows.

As people like The Chieftain and PotentialHistory have said; there is no single best tank, each country has their best for their needs. The T-34 was brilliant for the Soviets. Fast to both produce and good firepower armour speed but poor crew survivability The M4 was the all rounder needed for the multiple fronts and environments the US fought in alongside leasing some to allies. Whilst not having a gun as effective in tank destroying as say a long 75mm that the panther had The Panther had excellent firepower and good armour, brilliant from a perspective of combat but had problems with weight and stress on machinery. The Ha-Go or Chi-Ha were excellent for their time and purpose of infantry support on small pacific islands where maneuverability and fast transport was essential

I personally think the japanese tanks where shit. Yeah, at the time of first creation, they where godly strong. But during the Pacific? Nah they were just metal fodder for the m4 or whatever the us used. The reasoning behind that was because Japan was mostly interested in ships, since most of the time the Pacific campaign was most of the time in, well, the Pacific. So it makes sense to ditch ground assets in favour of ships, except the yamato and her sister. They where airplane fodder instead.
@RedShocktrooperRST
@RedShocktrooperRST 4 года назад
@@user-pq9gy3fq1q Consider that the US went into World War 2 with M2 Lights, and the M2 Medium which never saw combat (thankfully). Academically, it is unfair to compare them to the M4, especially since Japan could either focus its industry on the army or the navy and not both. The 47mm they mounted on some Chi-has was able to penetrate the M4 from the sides, as could the Japanese antitank rifles, but there's a reason it took them until 1945 to even have a tank that was the M4's equal: they didn't have the resources to meaningfully develop to tank development.

@RedShocktrooperRST 4 года назад
@@user-pq9gy3fq1q I also spoke from a purely academic stance. Compared to its actual contemporaries - such as M2 Light, T-26, and LT-35 - the Chi-Ha was actually pretty good. Just, unlike Germany or Russia, Japan lacked the industrial base to replace them with better tanks until it was way too late. ANd I doubt having Chi-nus would have actually really helped them in the war in the Pacific.

Hit the nail on the head pretty well! It it just me or are there more people screaming about the Abrams being the best tank ever than any other? I know there's the Wheraboos and their big cats but I seem to see more M1 fans than anything else, boasting like they're playing over inflated top trumps and disregarding everything mentioned in this video... Personally I'm not too keen on the Abrams, to me it seems to be a bit too much for modern warfare (in my humble opinion as someone who has never fought in war, just read a lot about it) and I'd suggest a supplementary force of lighter, smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles for lower intensity fighting against weaker enemies / insurgents in difficult to reach places so that the Abramses (?) aren't required for everything and overstretched across too many places. Something like an up-armoured Stryker MGS with composites or ERA, the Kaplan MT, or even a modernised M60 would do IMO, I just think that the over complicated M1 is overkill as America often fights in far flung places across the globe, and it might ease the stress of logistics if such a vehicle were used in places that either don't require a modern MBT, or which don't have the infrastructure to support them. For the kind of thing I'm getting at, check Matsimus' video on the Kaplan MT; as he explains it better than me. Personally, my favourite tank is the Maus; I know it's stupidly impractical and should never have been designed but I still love it as a technological marvel! Hope someone finds this interesting, and discussion is welcomed!
@Huski3s
@Huski3s 4 года назад
The Abrams fits the US's doctrine, the crews are well trained on using it, and the US has the military logistics to support it. For all intensive purposes, for the US Army, the Abrams is the best tank, because it's what fits.
@the_victorious_1
@the_victorious_1 4 года назад
@@Huski3sthanks for the reply! Yes indeed it fits the battle doctrine very well, there's why it's still around almost 40 years later. Where I was trying to get at was that the USA fights in so many different places, with different challenges, that one unified doctrine can't hope to properly deal with all possible scenarios. The M1 Abrams fits the current battle doctrine well, and it's a great tank with great crews; but in the same way you wouldn't bring a .50 cal sniper rifle to an ally fight, the M1 would cause more problems than it would solve in bad terrain e.g. East Asia or Central America. The USA aren't fighting there right now but they are certainly possible theatres of war and I would question the reliance on one type of MBT to work equally well in environments it was never designed for. It's all well and good having a great MBT and the infrastructure to support it, but if it's the wrong tool for the job it's never going to fulfill its potential. With the USA having a global sphere of influence, its surprising that more consideration isn't given to fighting in the far flung locations that the USA may need to defend; and so the idea of a smaller, lighter tank for such environments should make sense. There have been such projects, such as the Stryker MGS, but that works alongside the M1, and not too well in its place IMO.
@yagdtigercommander
@yagdtigercommander 4 года назад
I can agree with that some times the stupidly impractical designs can be the most interesting. Simply because you wonder how the hell they even achieved such a feet in the first place. I mean look at the SturmTiger siege rocket mortar assault gun that needed its own crane load 380mm rockets sure not i deal for fending of hoards of Allied or Russian tanks but If you wanted an enemy bunker or garrisoned building leveled that was best the best tank to do it and maybe urban warfare easier for German troops. Now the Brumbar or Sturm Panzer 4 was more practical and had a better rate of fire than its bigger cousin the Sturm Tiger. But if you didn't feel like wasting time punching wholes in buildings because you don't give a shit about collateral damage and just wanted silence some resistance fighters the Sturm Tiger is your answer lol.

The M1 and especially the more modern variants have exceptionally good computer controlled fire control systems, as well as being able to instantly communicate with friendly infantry, tanks and air power. This alone gives them one hell of an advantage.

To be honest, I think the us is on the verge of replacing the abrams. They really need a new platform. The us has already started the bidding of the Bradley replacement, so it's not that far off for them to replace the m1 abrams, it's just aging. its heavily armoured and has more upgrade packs than EAs microtransactions, but the system itself is getting old. Huge turret, fairly weak hull, and let's be honest, stupid thick armour. Maybe they'll start to change once electric catches on a bit more. Torque was a consideration when picking the turbine engine, and electric has a lot of torque. Also electric is as efficient as it gets when idling, since it doesn't use any power.

Honestly, you probably could figure out the best tank in the world, but doing so would require so much information on so many different aspects that actually making an argument for it would be next to impossible. Not only do you need to take into account general aspects like firepower, armor, optics, ammunition, range, fuel efficiency, fuel sources, speed, maneuverability, and crew survivability, you do also have to take into account mechanical reliability, cost, cross-terrain performance, and operability in different environments and types of landscapes, and them somehow balance all these traits against each other to figure out what is, on average, the best tank. Take away cost and you get what would ideally be the best in a 1v1. Oh, and how well it would do in a defensive and offensive role.

There is no "best tank" overall but there are factors that make specific tanks, or any vehicle in general, the best suited for their use. Russian tanks since the T-34 have had a focus on offense, with lacking gun depression, tight spaces, low profile, and all of the protection in he form of pure armor that while being designed to take hits, if a hit actually gets inside it's messy. NATO tanks have been conceptualized as a defensive force with strong armor and good protection and survivability, and an emphasis mainly on the armor of the turret since these machines are designed to excel when hull down. But also boasting high mobility to reposition or retreat. US is an exception where the Abrams was made to fight both offensively and defensively, as well as a big chunk of its design focus wasn't just Europe, but defending the US homeland as well, meaning it was designed to fight in most of the environment the US has where tanks are strategically useful. Tanks like the K2 Black Panther or Type 10 are very special cases, a common thing they get labelled as is being extremely advanced, however both are extremely optimized to fight to defend those two countries and strictly nowhere else. The K2 is marveled by many to be one of the best modern MBTs in the world, however, while it's design may give off the impression, it is not optimized to fight anywhere that isn't Korea and maybe the surrounding Asian region, wheras the Type 10 "Hito-Maru" was designed solely to fight in Japan and strictly nowhere else. Its use of nano-crystal ceramic armor isn't an impressive ting either, it's just a material commonly used on light armored vehicles and utilized by the Type 10 to keep it light enough to deploy widely in Japan, but the armor is only around the stats of the Type 90 and the armor is only really good at doing that while making it lighter. TL:DR Tanks are not universally "the best" but some tanks, even ones classed as "inferior", will excel more than others in the right given circumstances.

"There is no best tank" This imo stands out like a sore thumb, and I'm honestly surprised others share this idea. It is not a cop out answer. I highly recommend watching Potential History on his video about the topic of the best tank of WW2. More or less he hints this very concept, that there wasn't a perfect tank and instead were Armoured vehicles that suited the needs of the countries that built them. There are objectively good and bad tanks, however, when the topic of the "Best" tank comes up, I think the factors and context means a lot.

There's also the purpose of the tank. For instance, Leclerc is easily one of the best, but you have to keep in mind it was designed as a T-80 killer, as it was designed during cold war. What we should look at imo is how the tanks performs overall and how it performs for the specific role he was made for.

It is highly survivable. In my humble opinion the M1A2C is currently (until the D model comes out in 2021) the best OVERALL tank in the world. Fast, well armored, excellent gun, superior optics and targeting, all-weather capability, roomy ergonomic interior, etc. Combine that with a well trained crew and you have something that can take out Soviet/Russian tanks at a pretty insane kill ratio. Can you find a tank that is superior to the M1A2 in a specific category? Probably. But it will be inferior to the M1A2 in multiple other ways. As portrayed in game, the M1A2 isn't the monster that keeps Vlad the Short up at night and looking to upgrade his midget mobiles it is in the real world. I chalk that up to a desire to make the game playable and fun so that when you reach that top tier of tanks for the Russians, Germans, British, or what have you, you aren't wishing that you had done the American tank tree instead, and suffered temporarily through all those Ronsons....errrr....Sherman variants.

It is impossible to say what tank is the best when also cinsidering crew, but we are talking about the tank alone, not the crew. Also, it is true tanks are designed for different purposes, but there surely must be a tank that can do the most things. That means the best tank does or did exist, but there are so many factors to consider for the tank alone, it's, at least for now, impossible to find it

Jesus christ its not just down to the armor and the gun its also down to how reliable it is and how many parts you have. Whats the point of shipping a tank miles across seas only for it to break down and not be in a fight. And on top of that whats the point of having repair yards if there isnt any parts. For what the sherman had on its side it was the best. It even had almost the same armor for the front as a tiger one. Because the armor was slopped.

Oh and during the fight you run out of ammo due to ammunition shortages. Or would you want to actually have a reliable tank that gets you to Berlin from normandy. That has enough fuel and ammo to win the battle. That can go across almost all bridges. Oh and you would have at least a 5-1 odds against any type of enemy because you wouldn't go anywhere without 5 tanks. The key to the question is that Tanks are Combined Arms weapons. The Bradley and Abrams for example are both excellent vehicles but are even better when operating together. Abrams draw the fire and have the firepower while Bradley’s have enhance optics and carry supporting infantry. The best example that shows this is the US Armored units fighting the Iraqis in Desert storm, where the US vehicles performed excellently.

I'd argue you got this wrong. You forgot a big one. To do it, it would make comparisons even harder. It would require actually reading and understanding how the vehicle is meant to be used. Where the vehicle is meant to be used, what it's meant to do. If you look at the S-Tank, before it was replaced by the Leo 2, you could argue that the offensive use of the S-Tank was impossible and so it was a bad tank. Except..... if you look at where it was going to be used, the requirements it was designed for and the expected action it was going to take part in, it's a damned good vehicle. It's actually one of the best vehicles in its class and type. Damned good tank and you can quote me on that. So, it doesn't matter which vehicle you compare on a vehicle to vehicle basis, you're never going to get a useful, valid answer. If you need a tank more specialised towards the defence, that comes from a doctrinal place. You need to take it back to the doctrine that says this is the tank we need. Only then look at the vehicles and determine if they are fit for function. Pretty sure am American crew would not be happy in a T-80 or later, because it's not meant for the doctrine they're used to operating in, under.

This is why it makes more sense to talk about how important a tank is rather than how good it is, it's a lot more relevant and possible to talk about how much a certain tank influenced future designs and what contributions it made to the development of doctrine. The FT Renualt is obviously one of the most important tanks ever even though it probably wasn't the best tank in a straight up fight for it's time, but the way in which it basically completely solidified tank design going forward makes it very important. Similarly when talking about more controversial topics like WWII tanks a lot of people might say that the Sherman and T-34 weren't very good but what can't be denied is that they formed the basis of future tank development for these two super powers and experiences made with these tanks still determine doctrine to this day.
