What is the difference between Augmented and Mixed Reality? 

Clear, Short, and straight to the point

This concise, clear comparison and contrast between AR and VR is helpful! I enjoy my Quest 3 and wondered how the two differed.

It's probably an out-dated opinion, but I don't agree with this distinction. MR defines the broader scale of mixing real and virtual content. AR is just a point on the scale where the majority of sensory input is from the real world. Imagine an AR system that added a virtual cup of coffee to my environment. I could see the cup, I could touch the cup to feel its texture and the warmth, I could pick it up, drink it, and taste the coffee. This is all still AR. My real-world experience would have been augmented with virtual sensory stimuli for sight, touch, smell, and taste. That was always the goal of AR; but the technology still isn't here. I blame the Microsoft marketing department. They probably wanted to distance themselves from early technology that only had graphics vaguely floating in space. So they started using MR in relation to the HoloLens. They unfortunately picked a term that was already defined. Maybe the weight of opinion will redefine the term in time.

Best I can understand from this is that the difference is in the dimensionality and level of interaction, AR is 2D and you can't interact with it, and MR is 3D and you can interact with it, but the idea of AR is to enhance reality with digital media, how that enhancement happens isn't defined or perhaps it is better to say, "isn't constrained", which is why I think MR is really just AR, because it is still the same concept of augmenting reality with virtual objects. While I don't know for sure the story of Microsoft and MR, i'm more inclined to agree with @Thoughtfulmonkey on this. Great video though, this was the best distinction I could find on the difference

I've been a graphic/digital designer for 10 years now, currently freelancing for the last 3.5 years. Being 32 years old I've got my eyes on AR/MR as the next big leap (I came from the smart phone boom which was huge) but it's so hard to create something in this platform even though these new businesses/ideas don't exist yet. I have so many great ideas for the possibilities of this tech as soon as these new devices make it into the main stream I'll miss the opportunity! Anyway, great video, always fascinated by the possibilities of AR and MR.

Ok think i get it now. AR is mostly 2 dimensional but there's a spectrum between AR and VR and that spectrum is MR. So there's no exact line of when AR becomes MR but it's definitely before it becomes VR. For me i will say its when its fully 3-D and can interact with the virtual and real world simultaneously. Example of pokemon is mainly interacting with the virtual environment while SEEING the real world. so that's AR. Its mostly layed over. VR is obvious as the real world is left out. And MR would be interacting with menus or that game on on meta quest 3 where you sit aliens and break walls and capture them in your room...
