little bit about me, I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder/ Asperger's syndrome at 9 years old. I have kept my diagnosis a secret for the majority of my teenage years. I am 17 years old now and have decided to use RU-vid as a platform to help autistic people like myself parents of autistic children, as both me and my mum have struggled with the lack of help and resources available after the diagnosis.
I also wish to spread more female representation of people on the spectrum as there is a huge gap in the media which needs to be addressed, as well as the true reality's of being on the autism spectrum not just the stereotypical traits presented in the media.
my hope is to use this channel as a resource to help parents, but to also to share what it is really like living
as a autistic girl in the 21st century.
so if you want to know more about my life, relationships, friendships, what i get up to in my day to day life and extra information on autism, keep watching.
hope you enjoyyy.

There was indeed a clear purpose to this video - to help avoid misdiagnosis and your explanation of the overlaps and their differences was excellent. So no need to apologise! Keep going with this channel and the very helpful content you’re providing.

I was recently diagnosed with OCD and *not* autism when I went specifically to confirm what I knew was autism. Despite having test scores that indicate clear ASD, the doc said it was OCD instead, which is beyond frustrating for me. I've since been researching the differences between the two, and your video (on top of numerous articles I've read) highlights the key differences and really solidifies for me what I already knew, which is that I'm definitely autistic and I *don't* have OCD. When you mentioned the volume numbers on a TV, that was a good example. For me, yes, I'd prefer that the numbers be ones ending in a 5 or a 0, because they're nice, rounded numbers. I don't feel like I *have* to have those numbers or something bad will happen, though. I just do it because it feels nice and comfortable for me internally. I feel like that's a clear example of autism and not OCD. Another example I hadn't really thought of until now is the spelling of my name (which isn't the name I was given at birth, so it was my decision). I'd always preferred this spelling, because it felt "even" and "level" to me; two Es, two Ms, two Ts. Seeing it spelled any other way makes me feel unbalanced or something (Emit, Emett, Emitt, Emmet, etc.). I need it spelled this way for my own comfort. But, again, that's more of an autism thing than OCD. Anyway, sorry for the long ramble. I really appreciate you making this video!

Thank you so much for making these videos, I always thought I had OCD, but now after speaking to my GP I’m on the waiting list to be assessed for autism. 27 years old and always wondered why I felt so different to everyone else. Also my son is now showing traits of autism so it’s all making sense now. Thank you for raising awareness x

I thought I had OCD and got diagnosed with autism. They told me I have a lot of markers for OCD but they think that’s from my anxiety being so severe. It’s crazy how all these things overlap

Thanks Hollie. Just started watching your videos as my 17 yr old daughter has been told she may have ASD. She is doing well at Alevels and if it is ASD is coping well outside of home. However many of the things you talk about such as OCD, television volume and a host of other things are typical of her. We're on a sharp learning curve but your videos are helping understand and if we can do that then hopefully we can adapt to help her and avoid melt downs and also embrace all of the thing she is brilliant at. Keep up the videos.

I'm still on the fence of whether I have autism of OCD, and your comment on perspective is interesting. I feel a "need" or "compulsion" to do certain things, acts, stims, and it's not "pleasurable" as some would frame it as autism. However, there's also not a thought or narrative going through my mind, as you describe with OCD. I've come to realize the stims aren't "fun" so much as "help lower anxiety", help aim for a baseline.

I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety after I went through a depression from a marriage situation however I've always struggled with I thought it was anxiety but I didn't think I was off the charts. Reflecting back on all my behaviors from a childhood when you said lining up your toys... Trigger.... I would lineup my stuffed animals and if anything was out of line I would throw a fit one time I had brand new box of crayons and I used 1 of the crayons a little bit more than the others and it didn't have the sharpener in there and I asked my Grandma for a sharpener and she just came over and ripped the paper off the crayon oh did I throw a fit because it didn't look like the others now and I was so upset Obviously I still remember that it still traumatized me when I think about it..... I've gotten better with things not being in their place or moved I don't have that issue anymore however however I do notice that all the jobs that I look for I want repetitive And scheduled days Like data entry I could do that all day long with nobody bothering me and I be in heaven.... Filing are something that other people find boring I find Peaceful..... I haven't been diagnosed with autism but I can tell that I am definitely on the spectrum I took a online quiz if you will and just my past behaviors from past relationships and how I responded..... My mom would always call me a spoiled brat however I really couldn't Help the way I responded everything was so dramatic to me..... I'm afraid to go get diagnosed with that because I don't know how that affects my job I don't know how that affects Anything...... Now of course I'm self diagnosing which you know we should not be doing but this is something you really don't want to find out but that I'm relieved that I actually can see why I've acted the way I have..... I've always been a professional put together woman But I have a very short fuse when I get very overwhelmed I my brain scrambles I can't fi'm late my thoughts It's embarrassing sometimes.... Again I always thought I'm just dealing with a lot of stress it's my anxiety but I truly think it's deeper because I can actually feel my insides shaking and i'd become almost breathless if I get overwhelmed...... Thank you so much for sharing I definitely do have OCD of course that comes with being autistic I don't know where I'm at on the spectrum I feel I'm pretty normal and always have been outside of I have moments I have unbalance in my life.....

can autism traits become more intense ex. like a routine becomes more rigid after traumatic events. so not like it develops later on, but like it just become more intense. cuz my mom got diagnosed with ocd after a traumatic event but shes always had these ocd traits all her life, so it could have been misdiagnosed autism.

They can present similarly, so how would someone know if they have both? Or how does a doctor diagnose? It must be very complicated so I guess that's why ppl often get misdiagnosed or get diagnosed with one when they have both (like my mom)
@holliemabbott949
@holliemabbott949 3 года назад
It can be hard to spot the differences there extremely alike, lots of autistic people have ocd so it doesn’t make it easier! Sorry I can’t be of more help I would suggest going to the doctors if you suspect you have autism or OCD as they may be able to see what signs you show and find out if you are autistic or have ocd or both

They can be co morbid. Only way to know is be diagnosed by a professional
@sydneydenham5778
@sydneydenham5778 2 года назад
I have both, and I’m not a professional by any means, but for me the OCD is very fear based, and very much in my head. There’s an obsession and a compulsion. Like when I would go to work at shift exchange and I didn’t get to do my opening routine the same way I always do I would get incredibly stressed out and mad, that’s the ASD. But with OCD, I have a fear of drinking out of reusable straws because I think there’s going to be something in it I can’t see. So I have to check the straw over and over again and I’m so stressed out and uncomfortable and I’ll get intrusive thoughts about it and like imagine mold coming out of the straw. So my compulsion would be checking the straw, or in most cases, just completely avoiding reusable straws.

I'm autistic with not only OCD, but ADD & ADHD as well. My OCD is to the point I can't clean properly. One example of my OCD is with paper money. It has to be 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 order. Then it has to go with letters ABC order, then numeral order. So yea my OCD is extremely bad. When it really flares up, my cupboards look like a grocery store shelf my ice box is the same, plus ABC order as well. I need help but can't find help anywhere.

I heard all these diagnosis are heavy metals in the brain. I could use some help. I'm staying with a woman temporarily who I am sure woman who is autistic and OCD..maybe borderline personality dis? She's very obsessive about so many things! Driving me nuts. composting and worry about pests, bugs. I've been composting for years and I've never had issues with these kinds of things. Fruit flies in the summer sure but it's the Dead Winter. I even pointed like there's no bugs you see there's no bugs! She is incessant and to the point where it's feels like paranoia and hyper-vigilant. And it's so hard to be around! I'm just wondering how I do this? how can I set some serious boundaries with her. boundaries for Myspace not having her constantly at me about having things perfect even in my own space upstairs. This is her home and she gets very mean if I don't "kow tow" to her. It feels like the princess and the pea. Uugh! She has her own kitchen and area downstairs. Any ideas would be so appreciated. Also if there's a video that I can watch that would help how to communicate I tried tonight. I try to be reasonable. I try to reason with her it doesn't work very well she gets defensive and argumentative.

I liked your video. It's true, OCD people do things repeatedly in fear that something bad will happen if they didn't. They have intrusive thoughts they don't don't want and thoughts make them doubt themselves and worry they might want to do bad things the thoughts want them to do. But they are conscious of good and bad intentions. My step son has OCD - he could become badly obsessed about doing one thing for a few months, then he give up on thing and would find a new obsession. Like he became obsessed with tattoo and covered 1/3rd of his body with it, then next he found himself hating tattoo so bad & wants to remove all of with laser treatment which costs a lot. He became obese with food obsession, now he's having a bariatric surgery. He's latest obsession now is cosmetic surgery, basically he would tell everybody to do cosmetic surgery 😅 that's all he could think about. As a result, all the girls blocked him online. OCD does overlap with autism symptoms because my step son sometimes stims making weird noises when he's happy or nervous. He's obsessed with the internet, when you turned it off, he'll have a major meltdown even threatening to leave us or commit suicide but he's not agressive. He's afraid of germs 🤣, very academically gifted, with pour social skills & is extremely lazy 😴
