Have you ever found yourself painting and found a strange white chalky film on your paper? Have you ever tried to paint something hyper realistic and wasn't quite able to achieve the look? Well, these problems usually are due to type of paint you are using. Today I have put together a quick summary of everything to deal with transparent and opaque watercolors and how these paints can effect you. Enjoy!

Hi =) I have seen numerous watercolour videos talking about transparency and opacity of the paints. Still I got to learn something new from your video =) I've never heard anyone else mention what would happen if you mix a transparent paint with an opaque one or what to expect when you glaze them over each other. I personally do not do realism paintings, I’m mostly into cartoons or a cartoonish style & prefer opaque colors. They are some opaque watercolors that actually aren’t chalky at all. :) just figure out what works out for you.

I find it interesting that the 6 colors you used to explain the concepts are all W&N Cotmans and that some are transparent and the others opaque. I would have thought that all of them would be either transparent or opaque. I assumed my Cotmans were all transparent but I will have to test them now. Thanks for the tip!

+Ria Oelofse I thought the same too at first; but it really depends on how much filler is in the paint itself not necessarily the brand. :)

It also depends on the pigments. Some are just opaque, even in artist grade watercolors.

Oooh, thank you so much! I now know why it was so hard to paint with watercolor! I've always struggled with opaque watercolor, while a cheaper but transparent watercolor was perfect for me. Thankss °^°

omgosh, thank you so much, I have really cheap watercolour paints, which /sometimes/ (depending on the colours) look fine, and sometimes go all muddy, now I know why and can test them all and replace the trouble makers first as I upgrade to better paints!

Great video, thanks for sharing. An important point to remember is that chalkiness depends on the filler too. Inexpensive &/or student grade paints have less pigment, therefore are more chalky. Some are so bad (like a certain craft store brand) that they rub off like chalk pastels! So unless you prefer that look, you're better off buying the highest quality paint you can afford.

Cotman will leave a more chalky residue because they are student grade so contain a lot more (chalky) filler than professional grade. They are one of the better makes of student grade though.

+Kyomii Brown So true! Cotman is one of the better student grade paints. I've recently ordered some of their professional paints and can't wait to see the difference in the two :)

Less filler and more pigment. :) Because Cotman have a decent colour production it may not seem like there is a whole lot of difference but there is, and very noticable if you work in light layers as luminosity will be more vivid. White is always chalky - and adding white to any colour essentially turns it into guoache. I don't know why white is included as standard in sets, it isn't needed. You will notice less chalkiness overall though.

Hi Carrie, I realise this video is quite old but I just recently found your channel and love how much care you take presenting the information you teach and very much looking forward to your online water colour classes. My question is I've just started experimenting with watercolour and completed this exercise and found most of my Reeves tube paints are opaque. Does this mean they won't glaze well? I thought it may be due to my lack of experience but I can not seem to get that nice soft blended look, is this because my paints are not transparent? Many thanks.

I hear what your saying that transparent watercolor work more efficiently but I have mostly semitransparent watercolors and I don’t really hav the money to go out and buy a whole new set. I was kinda hoping that this video would touch on how to work with opaque watercolors if that’s all you have

I paint whit watercolours and oils. I love the oils and watercolours of the brand Pebeo and its so in expensive for both. One tube of Pebeo oil paint is about 10,23 till 15,89 and it has 200 ml of oil paint in it. That crazy cheap for the amount of oil paint you get. The Pebeo watercolours set is 19,09 and has 24 tubes of 12 ml. And the colours are just stunning on both oil and watercolours. Thank you so mutch for this video. For beginners trying to guess which colors will be more transparent: buy single pigment colors and learn color mixing. Multi pigmented colors are often more opaque and muddy mixes faster. Tube colors are sometimes more transparent than pans, but that seems to be changing with the newer formulations that are available now.

i have got a opic pallette, how can I make them less chalky on the paper, without using transparent paint? I really hate the chalk looking of it and I can't make that nice wet on wet tehniques, it is too chalky

I've really been looking into getting the Angora watercolour 36 set, but i want to know if it's worth the almost 30 dollars i'd have to spend to buy it and get it shipped to where I live?

+Arta MoonTerror That was my started watercolor kit and I still love it. Sometimes the paints can look opaque though since they are a cheaper variety of paint. But for the money and the amount of colors it's a great starter kit. :D

Is the sakura koi watercolor transparent or opaque??

Koi would be considered student grade meaning there's fillers so it'd be semi transparent. It's a decent starter palette, there's also prima and Jane Davenport that are likewise student grade but more vibrant then the Koi. Another great starter set that's vibrant and affordable is the Mozart 40 color set on Amazon for $26.
