Fr. Carl Gismondi talks to Patrick Coffin about the founding of the FSSP and what drew him to the Latin mass.
Fr. Carl Gismondi is from Pittsburgh, PA. After several years of discernment, in 1995 he entered the Fraternity of St. Peter’s seminary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, then located at Scranton, PA. Following seven years of study, Fr. Gismondi was ordained a priest on June 29, 2002. From 2002 to 2003, Fr. Gismondi served as an Associate Chaplain at the Fraternity's apostolate in Sacramento. From 2003 to 2006, he served as Pastor of St. Michael's Church in Scranton, PA. Following his pastoral assignment, Fr. Gismondi attended the Dominican House of Studies, Washington, DC, where, in 2008, he earned a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. In July 2008, Fr. Gismondi was appointed as Chaplain to the Traditional Latin Mass community of San Diego. On October 7, 2008, following erection of St. Anne Catholic Church as a personal parish for the Traditional Latin Mass apostolate in the Diocese of San Diego, Fr. Gismondi was appointed as Pastor at St. Anne's.

Now that Pope Francis wants to abolish the TLM... MANY CATHOLICS ARE NOW INTERESTED IN ATTENDING IT.

I was treated so harshly in St. Clare's in Assisi when I requested the extraordinary form that I cannot wait to move to another diocese altogether. None of it makes sense. The Mass was jolly and everybody (except me) received Communion in the hand. No kneeling was possible. Immediately after Mass the priest took the Host in precession to another chapel, and placed it in the monstrance for adoration and Benediction. The contrast was stark. In the Tridentine Mass the moment of elevation is the moment of the Trinity. Adoration afterwards would be inappropriate.

+Rosemary Alabaster What do you mean? In my parish (Latin Mass), the first Sunday of each month we have adoration immediately following Mass. Why is adoration afterward inappropriate?

This comment section is so small, I guess the TLM vs NO crowd only shows up in Reddit and Twitter.

A problem with the latin mass: I wish the priests and the laity learn latin before using it, and pronounce it correctly. When I attend latin masses, I often hear some strange language more or less connected to the real latin language.

Papal infallibility is far more pernicious than most people realize. Among many ill effects, lets state only five: i. It quenches the Spirit: that is why RC hymn writers are often converts or ecumenists. Cardinal Newman could not have written “Souls of men” if he did not have the fortune of starting life as an Anglican. When Romanists sing "Amazing Grace" or "Blessed Assurance" or "Abide with me" one often wonders if they realize that their own church members have a psychological block from attaining such levels of Christian expression mainly because of the Romanist ethos of infallibility which situates inspiration in an artificial mechanism rather than in the Word of God. ii. It quenches accountability of the hierarchy - there is “trickle-down” quasi-infallibility of Cardinals, Bishops and even ordinary priests and religious. Many Romanist parish priests speak "ex cathedra" in their own little corners even more stridently than the Supreme Pontiff. That is what is at the root of the explosive scandals. That is also why Pope Francis can ignore very valid appeals for him to be accountable. iii. It quenches interest in the Word of God - why bother when one man has all the answers? iv. It quenches Evangelism - people are not eager to spread a Word which is not definitive but is subject to tinkering and "interpretation" through a system led by a man who is elected by a fallible conclave. That is why the vast majority of converts to Christianity become evangelical Christians. Romanism is a dead end. v. It quenches Integrity. Lets take a simple example. Apart from the arch-conservatives, most Romanists tell me in private that they reject the encyclical Humanae Vitae. Yet, against the dictates of their own conscience, they must defend it publicly, only because the Pope is "infallible".
