So up to now, the way reception of Holy Communion developed was centered around Christ and how to best protect His Body and Blood from being mishandled or accidentally lost. Now we seek to center the reception of Holy Communion around the fear of spreading diseases? The focus has shifted from our Lord to focus on ourselves. The focus or reason for the change isn’t based on faith but rather fear and therefore un-Orthodox.
As a subdeacon in Byzantine Catholic sui juris church we are using one time use wooden spoon. After Eucharist communion it is collected, burned, and properly buried.
Beautiful balanced presentation though it’s still give the impression of an open discussion on the subject, PLEASE DON’T USE Tavern’s Music for background music, you are in the Church talking about the Body and Blood of Christ, for crying out loud!! We have tons of beautiful Byzantine holy chants, why don’t use them, It also make the video Cheap and Tacky !!!
The reason behind using the spoon is because the body of Christ was not always consumed when distributed in the hand, and was taken and used In perverse manner, like using to make spells and other nonsense. Is it the 15% alcohol that makes it safe to consume, or the fact that it is the Body and Blood of Christ? Something for our Clergy to think long and hard about! Lord have mercy!!!
Small piece of bread,,dip in the wine, and then the priest puts directly in the mouth. No crumbs, no wine spills. Easy enough. Church really needs to change the way communion is done now. Very pleased to hear this is being talked about because as a Greek Orthodox myself, many, many people have stopped taking communion because of the spoon in everyone;s mouth. Hoping and looking forward to hearing what happens.
Forgive me, I am nearly started with the video, and for such a serious Holy Mystery, Our Lord Himself, I would rather hear chanting or no music at all. Also, "It's not a problem for us now"...what are you saying? It is a very big concern when the Faithful have allowed the wolves "bishops" to shut the doors of the Church and not be able to partake in the Divine Liturgy, worship the Lord in His Temple and Holy Mysteries! Second, God does not "change", He is always and forever. This even a child understands and knows to be true. "O man of little Faith!" ...
Is the anxiety over residue and crumbs dogma? The Lord gave us the Eucharist. The nature of bread and wine is that you will have some amount of crumbs and residue. I'm not saying throw the elements on the ground because it doesn't matter, but the nature of a bloody sacrifice is that blood spills everywhere. I appreciate the Father's concern that we are reverent. But are we confident the Lord is offended by crumbs? Sorry for my ignorance.
The priest can give holy communion using a spoon which is dipped into hot water after a person receives Holy Communion. Water is used in the sacraments of baptism and should not in anyway contaminate.
No; the bread does not change. (I'm not Lutheran so I won't deal with a consubstantiationist argument.) Communion is a memorial meal. No one actually eats a part of Jesus. It's a memorial. That's it.
