It is one of the most debated aspects across the different denominations of Christianity - the practice of glossolalia, colloquially known as "speaking in tongues" or a "heavenly language." It is practiced predominantly by the Pentecostal Church but is it a belief that has a place in Greek Orthodoxy?

The Apostle St. Paul spoke mystically in tongues in his devotions, he himself said that he spoke in tongues very often but he taught that in the public meetings of the church, in the liturgy, glossolalia should be limited. In his epistle to Corinthians, he asked the church not to prohibit speaking in tongues, but to do it with decency and order. May God bless the Holy Orthodox Church and fill it with all the charisms of the Spirit. May God bless the Orthodox pastors and continue to anoint them to guide the people in these end times.

I had an experience 20 yrs ago where I was overwhelmed during prayer and could not speak in English, and all that came out was a guttural language that was over powering. I continued with this language for 20 yrs in Pentecostal circles. But now, as I seek the Orthodox Faith, and study the true faith, I now realize that maybe what I experienced back then, and what I have BEEN doing is NOT from God’s Spirit, but from something either demonic, or just plain from me. Either way, I cannot keep doing it because I believe I’ve been shown the truth already.

In orthodoxy there are occasions were foreigners visited contemporary saints, such as saint Paisius, and the saints were conversating with them for hours, without knowing their language. I believe it's common but in orthodoxy it isn't hierarchized in a high place, as a gift of the Holy Spirit.
@brettcopeland9811
@brettcopeland9811 3 года назад
@@vivian5361 I disagree. The Holy Spirit can work through the most sinful of men at times. The ability to speak in languages one has never learned is not a sign of sanctity or of salvation although the saints are probably more open to such experiences than most of us who live and often think like unbelievers. Saint Gregory Palamas in his "Triads" says it is possible to legitimately speak in tongues given by the Holy Spirit and not derive any spiritual benefit from the experience. Although the Gift is for prayer to God and operates through the body, it does not result automatically in prayer of the heart. One's heart can be far from God while receiving Divine Grace.. That's why many can receive Holy Communion and genuinely receive Christ Himself while at the same time eating and drinking condemnation upon themselves because of their flippant approach to the Holy Mysteries. If God gives unholy people the Holy Gifts to receive even though "Holy Things are for the holy," why wouldn't God give a comparatively insignificant gift like speaking in tongues to a person for spiritual edification and support and an encouragement on the path toward Theosis? We ought not to limit what God is willing to do for us by our theological presumptions, which are based more on our own impoverished spiritual experience than on the promises of God given to us in the Scriptures. The Christians in the Church at Corinth had a lot of struggles with sin and carnality. The Apostle Paul called them "babes in Christ" and "not spiritual," but rather "carnal" because of their earthly mindset rather than being in possession of the mind of Christ. Nevertheless, so many of them had the genuine gift of tongues that the Apostle Paul had to give them guidelines so as not to abuse the Grace given them in this particular operation of the Holy Spirit. It appears they were misusing the gift , either for exhibitionism or in an egocentric way, and that they would all speak in tongues at the same time in their worship services either to show off their gifting or to edify themselves without benefitting others gathered there. Saint Paul told them to stop this since it did not edify others and it would be an occasion for unbelievers to blaspheme and blame the genuine working of the Holy Spirit on insanity or on the kind of ecstatic behavior characteristic in the festivals of the pagan cult of Dionysius. Isn't that what happened when the apostles spoke in tongues at the same time on the Day of Pentecost? Many accused them of being drunk when they were all extolling the wonderful works of God in various tongues. What happened then on that first Pentecost and at the Gentile "pentecost" in Acts 10 is not meant to be normative for the Church. Those experiences of all speaking in tongues at the same time were not to be normative as Saint Paul makes clear in First Corinthians 14. Paul said he wished all Christians could speak in tongues (14:5), but he also says that such a manifestation is given by the will of God (12:7) and that not all speak in tongues (12:30). He also said that love should be the guiding principle, seeking the good of another, with respect to the charismata. He also said he would prefer that all Christians should prophesy and he seems to indicate that all Christians can prophesy (14:31). Moses had said, "Would that all the LORD’s people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” And Joel prophesied that God would pour out His Spirit upon all flesh and that our sons and daughters would prophesy. Orthodox Christians are given this same Prophetic Spirit through Holy Chrismation, although it woefully lies dormant or only liturgically operative in many of us due to sins of pride and unbelief. Saint Paul encourages tongue-speakers to seek the gift of interpretation of tongues so that the Church may receive edification (14:13). Saint Gregory Palamas says that Saint Paul encourages us to seek this gift of interpretation through prayer and the persons Paul is addressing are tongue-speakers. By saying this, is Saint Gregory implying that he himself speaks with tongues? Perhaps, though he does not put the spotlight on himself the way the carnal Corinthian Christians did and the way Pentecostals often do, but Saint Gregory walks a path of humility to which the Church testifies. Anyone gifted with charismatic Grace ought to be very fearful of abusing such Grace for as the Lord said, "To whom much is given, much is required." If we use God's Grace in the Church as an occasion for pride, boasting of our sanctity, our spirituality, our Holy Mysteries, our Orthodoxy, or our whatever, we are condemning ourselves. It requires true spiritual discernment at times to distinguish between a genuine spiritual manifestation and a false one. An axiom such as "if the tongue-speaker is nothing close to a saint, the tongues are obviously demonic" is insufficient and may actually be plain wrong in certain circumstances. What ought rather to ask: what is the purpose of this particular tongue-speaking? What is it resulting in? Toward where is it leading? Is it leading the person toward humility or toward pride? Toward repentance or toward complacency? Toward penitence or toward foolish laughter? Toward the Church or away from it? Toward the Holy Chalice or away from it? Toward Christ or elsewhere? As far as contrived or demonic tongues, none of what I said above applies since such tongues are not from God and are therefore void of Divine Grace. One ought to desist from such a spiritual manifestation rather than trying to align it with the Orthodox Faith.

With respect to the Pentecostalist congregations, I have met a few people who would talk of their experience at these large gatherings. However I was disappointed that this talk did not speak of the problem of 'discerning the spirits'. There are many sources of inspiration that we must be careful about. In India the Hindu mystics have many 'powers' and experiences that are impressive. If we read St Paissios' book on the 'Gurus' of India, (he was monk at Mt Athos, Greece who I met in the 1980's) we definitely need to 'discern' what is happening very carefully, without judging, given our own small bit of wisdom. God alone knows what is happening, as this video suggests also. As the wind, the Spirit blows where 'He' will.

It seems prudent to stay within the confines of the Orthodox Tradition. The vast majority of us lack the discernment to always know what experience or miracle is from God and what is not in the Church let alone outside of it. Regarding the Pentecostal experience of “tongues”. It is foreign to the Tradition of the Church and appears to be a cheap counterfeit of the biblical gift of tongues. Does that mean there aren’t instances of the legitimate gift of tongues? I don’t know and I don’t worry about what God is doing outside the Church, that is his business. We need to be concerned with our own salvation if we are going to be any help to anyone.

I know that it is not of God. The Hindus are lost as well as everyone that believes, practices and teaches false doctrines which are lies of the devil and demonic in nature. There is only salvation in Christ through obedience to His Word. There is no other way the scriptures as well as the church has made that very clear. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Timothy 4:3‭-‬4 KJV

Yeah, even pentecostals will agree with you and tell you that you can receive the gift of tongues from the Holy Spirit or from demonic influences, and there's a gift of discernment as well. I've ran into both the holy and unholy tongues. It's just a mystery of the faith at the end of the day. God is just and he reads our hearts; our zeal and righteousness is the currency of us reaping our blessings or curses. Orthodoxy liturgic and adhering to early church traditions definitely gives them a reward of understanding Christ's divinity in a deep level, but Pentecostals worship God in energetic, powerful way; adhering to psalms 47:1, psalms 33:3, psalms 150:5, etc... That is why you find the common pentecostal man or woman experiencing anecdotes of miracles a lot more than the orthodox. Their worship is ACTIVE. tl;dr we all worship God and we're rewarded for it

Having been raised in a Pentecostal church and now Orthodox, I think there were many problems with the focus on tongues. For one, it was seen as THE spiritual gift in Pentecostal circles when Paul says it's the least of the gifts. He also says not all speak in tongues and uses an analogy of a body and its parts and how each person is gifted to serve the body of Christ rather than all serving the body as an eye. I also believe that most of the people who said they spoke in tongues, don't actually have the gift. Not that I know that they did or didn't have the gift, but that if the Bible doesn't give credence to the idea that this is the sure fire way to know you have the baptism of the Holy Spirit, then we shouldn't focus on it either. I think while people are sincere, it can be dangerous to risk mocking God by claiming you have a spiritual gift when you don't. Lastly, I'd add that how this is practiced in Protestantism has deviated from the Acts 2 recording of the events. Those gathered weren't seeking tongues, they were seeking the Holy Spirit and to be empowered and the sign they received was miraculously being enabled to speak other languages and share the message of Christ.

Thank you, Father, for your learned response which contradicts a preponderance of ignorant statements I have heard from other Orthodox commentators on the topic. Your words are more in line with the writings of Scripture and of the Holy Fathers than many other Orthodox opinions I've read and heard. I was raised in a Pentecostal church (the Assemblies of God) and in my late 20's I was received into the Holy Orthodox Church. I cannot deny many of the things I "heard and saw" within Pentecostalism the way many cradle Orthodox flippantly dismiss the whole lot of Pentecostal experience. In my own local assembly, a woman well-loved in the Church spoke in tongues at length on two occasions in which she was understood by speakers of foreign languages. In one case, she spoke in Hebrew and was understood by a visiting missionary to Israel who explained what she had said. In another case, she spoke in a Native American language and was understood by someone visiting the church who also told the congregation what she had said. In both cases, her words were in praise of the Lord. I also have first-hand knowledge of similar experiences. So it is lunacy to me when Orthodox monks, deacons, priests, or bishops lambaste modern Pentecostal experiences as being either fake or demonic. We cannot put God in a box. Surely there is fakery, mimicry, social conditioning, mass hysteria, and the demonic, but even all of that cannot discount that miracles do at times occur both inside and outside the Orthodox Church. Christ Himself acknowledges that miracles do occur outside of the Apostolic circle. I have heard some Orthodox clergy seem to take comfort in an opinion not favored by Saint Gregory the Theologian and other Holy Fathers, preferring to believe that the miracle of tongues at Pentecost was an auditory miracle or something limited only to the Apostles rather than miracles of utterance under the direction of the Holy Spirit in all of the 120 disciples gathered. Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, the Theologian, says regarding the 120 disciples gathered at Pentecost, that the preferred interpretation of the text is that the miracle was not in the hearing of the crowd, but rather in the mouths of the disciples because the Holy Spirit was giving utterance to them, not changing the sound by a miracle in the hearing of the foreigners that heard them. The Theologian says that that is why "they were reproached for drunkenness" (On Pentecost 15). By saying all of this, I am not excusing the fallacies of Pentecostal and/or Charismatic doctrines. Their excesses and unorthodox teachings and practices are clear to anyone taught in an Orthodox way of understanding Scripture. Even if some of the monks of the Church did speak with tongues during their private prayers, they, out of humility, would probably keep it a secret. Having read many writings of the Holy Fathers, I am convinced that the gift of speaking in tongues operates through the body (Gregory Palamas TRIADS) and can even do so in those whose hearts are prayerless (ibid.) So speaking in tongues is not necessarily "prayer of the heart" as Fr. Alexis Trader claims. John Chrysostom describes the phenomenon at length, stating the tongue of those given this gift would move under inspiration of the Spirit and they would speak in a language unknown to them. But, as the Apostle Peter and Saint Irenaeus say, genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit are not subject to the will of man and are given at whatever moment as the Holy Spirit wills. One given such a gift may of course refrain from or even resist its use. The clergy can quench the Spirit and despise prophesying and the exercise of other spiritual gifts. The Holy Spirit can be grieved. The Church must stop condemning speaking in tongues and forbidding speaking in tongues and zealously desire to prophesy. These things are sought in prayer and Paul wished all the Corinthians could speak in tongues outside of the Church, even though all do NOT speak in tongues. But, whether they spoke in tongues or not, he wanted them to prophesy. The Church should command those displaying genuine miracles to be joined to the Church as Peter commanded the house of Cornelius, but not demonize the miracle with some kind of undiscerning knee-jerk reaction as if all spiritual phenomena outside of the Church are counterfeit. Again, thank you for your gracious and educated words, Father.

Curious about orthodox beliefs on tongues. I’m new to orthodox views. Wasn’t Paul addressing tongues in context of church assembly for the edification of all, which is why he said he would prefer prophecy? My understanding is that tongues is of huge value, specifically for personal edification which Paul described himself as doing more than them all. Obviously in context of being gathered with the saints tongues is not the best for edification unless it’s interrupted which in that case it’s equal to prophecy. 1 cor 12:28 Paul describes what God has places in the church, and tongues is on the list. So if god placed it in the church it should have it’s function as god has desired right? Just being curious with an open heart.

Could it be that the reason they spoke in human languages was because it was actually prophecy. Because Paul also says that one who speaks in a tongue speak to god and not to men for no one understands him. If no one understands him, doesn’t that prove that tongues is more than just speaking human languages?

Thus, not only did the other nation hear the Apostle speaking in his own language, but the Apostle also understood and spoke the language of each nation. For this reason the crowd thought that they were drunk, that not understanding how each Apostle could speak to everyone in everyone's language, they considered that one drunk. Others, however, wondered, saying: What does this mean? The crowd, gathered in Jerusalem for the feast, was from all parts of the earth: Parthians, Medes and Elimites, who had been enslaved a little earlier by Antiochus."

I became a Christian after calling out to God and received the gift of speaking in tongues. That was 29 years ago, I've grown in Grace as I've drawn closer to Jesus. I've been exploring Orthodoxy and am also a Charismatic Christian, when Praying the Jesus prayer , obviously as a beginner! It felt as if it was coming from that same Spiritual well. In terms of 'extasy' that's the first I've heard that before, I suppose we come from different spiritual traditions, however I'm attracted to Orthodoxy mainly because it seems to exude the heart of Jesus. Kinda in the same situation brother! I actually visited a monastery here in Finland and as a theology student I ofc look how people view things, but I have to tell you that orthodoxy fascinates me. I really enjoy the services. As a pentecostal it feels like there is so many useless things and practices, but they carry such meaning and purpose! Also the differences in thinking about life after death are interesting. Orthodoxy seems to leave a lot of room for the mystery of God and the spiritual life itself, that propably excites me the most.

As much as we want you to become Orthodox. You need to really take the time to understand who we are and what we believe. I’m telling you right now Pentecostalism and Eastern Orthodoxy are not at all compatible. If this video gave you the impression it is that’s unfortunate. This video is not a fair representation of how the Orthodox Church views the Charismatic Movement. Read Fr. Seraphim Rose’s book Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future. Then decide if you are still interested in Orthodoxy.

There are some Pentecostals (mainly Oneness/non-Trinitarian Pentecostals) that teach that receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (w/ the initial sign of speaking in tongues) is necessary to salvation. This view, however, is a minority view, as the majority of Pentecostals do not believe tongues to be a salvation issue.

Question: the Corinthians were called "carnal" by the apostle Paul yet spoke in tongues. Are the Monks on Athos not carnal enough for this gift? I word the question this way because it doesn't seem like extreme asceticism is required for any of the gifts listed in 1 cor 12-14 when one considers the carnality of the church the Apostle was writing. How is this explanation not confusing to people. If the Orthodox Church is affirming speaking in tongues as experienced in Charismatic Churches and yet he admits that it is not practiced by Orthodox Christians even on Mount Athos. The only logical conclusion from his perspective is that the Eastern Orthodox Church is lacking the fullness of what the Holy Spirit intended for the Church. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given as He wills--that isn't based on whether or not someone "practices" something. If God wills to give a gift and His will meets with our will, people's ideas about whether or not it happens or did happen or can happen are irrelevant. If the Orthodox of nowadays are unworthy of various spiritual gifts or believe they don't or can't happen or shouldn't happen, does that mean that the Church is not the Church? We are all afflicted with sin, from the most sinful to the most holy among us these days. None of us has perfect knowledge of theology or of God. The gift of tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit and, as such, is a gift of the Orthodox Church, whether or not that gift is in manifestation since such manifestation happens according to the will of God. If Father Seraphim is making a blanket statement about the operation of the gift of tongues, he has gone ahead of the truth. The gifts of God are subject to His will (and the will of the one so inspired since it is a synergetic operation), but they are not necessarily subject to any blanket theological statement made by someone who "knows in part."

Paul said I speak in tongues more than you all mine are gift or not. It is a gift from the Holy Spirit, and, as scripture says, seek the gifts most of us today, do not understand it as it was understood in the first century, but it definitely is to happen until that which is perfect has come, which is. Jesus second coming, there is no doubt of this. Those who would try to convince us that it was the accumulation of the New Testament is denying that spirit would have not been functional for hundreds of years. Until the entire New Testament was canonized, forgetting that Jesus says I will not leave you comfortless there was no gaps and still are non-it’s not an either or it is a both, and scripture is the Holy Spirit at a rinse, written down and speak in tongues is many times, direct personal revelation to an individual. If God feels they need this type of revelation. The problem has always been other Christians, being jealous of God, revealing his personal word too. And individual and they feel they were left out. God does not leave people out, but those who have a jealousy issue will most likely not exercise any gift because of their pride. John, the apostle was called the beloved if God through Jesus happened to like John it’s not our concern. The fact is we get upset with our brothers and sisters when we see that they love Jesus more than we do and some actually do give 110% to the relationship. While others may give 80%, but not that 110 and they start screaming egalitarianism when the fact is, God doesn’t change we do our level of commitment is not the same and each of us and we are not to judge our brothers or sisters, but when we see God using people because of their humility, and giving their whole hearts to him many get jealous, so they claim this gift or that gift doesn’t exist anymore because they do not have it and someone else does.

The high degree of spiritual discernment among Orthodox Christians is not found outside of the Orthodox Church. No Orthodox Christian doubts the statements of Jesus Christ regarding the possibility that some outside the Apostolic followers may perform legitimate miracles in His name. Legitimate miracles lead people toward the unity of the Orthodox Christian Faith, but miracles which scatter people, leading them away from the spiritual unity found only in Christ are not of Divine origin. Christ also warns that miracles, casting out of demons, and prophesying (whether in the vernacular or in another language, i.e., tongues) are not signs of salvation because many who have done these things in His Name will walk away from Him on Judgment Day, going their own way into perdition because they are workers of iniquity (Matthew 7). Many wonder why the gift of speaking in tongues is rarely mentioned by the Church Fathers and why there are so few accounts of it in the lives of the saints, but why would there be many accounts of it if it is a gift whose primary purpose is to speak privately to God in prayer, and not publicy to other people (1 Corinthians 14:2)? The saints do not tend to boast of spiritual giftings nor do they engage in charismatic exhibitionism. The sign of tongues initially confirmed the efficacy of the Sacrament of the Laying on of Hands for the Gift of the Holy Spirit, which was the normative means of the communication of the Holy Spirit. The sovereign act of God, apart from human intervention, which occurred at the first Jewish Christian Pentecost (Acts 2) and the first Gentile Pentecost (Acts 10) did not become normative. Rather, the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of Apostolic hands (Acts 8:18; 19:6; 2 Tim 1:6-7). In the early days of the Church, tongues was a sign to those who doubted the efficacy of the Apostles' laying on of hands. As the Church grew, the Apostles drew distinction between the laying on of hands for the Gift of the Holy Spirit and the laying on of hands for commissioning and ordination by the inclusion of a special Anointing for the Gift of the Holy Spirit. This would further distinguish this sacrament from the sacrament of the laying on of hands for ordination and thus help reduce any possible ambiguity in the Church regarding who was ordained by the Apostles, which ambiguity could be used by people with a penchant for power to lay claim to ordination when, in reality, they had only received the sacrament for the Gift of the Holy Spirit. To clarify and distinguish the sacrament further from Holy Ordination, the Apostles took the sacramental sign of Holy Chrism from the anointing of prophets, priests and kings in the Old Testament, seeing its connection with the Holy Spirit (1 Samuel 16:13) and made use of Holy Chrism to communicate the Seal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit, not simply thru their administration, but at the hands of the bishops and presbyters whom they appointed. Now we require no manifestation of tongues to confirm the efficacy of Holy Chrismation, but we trust in the God who appointed the Apostles, and bishops and presbyters and imparted to them this Mystery. So there are no accounts after the Apostolic era of converts receiving the Sacrament for the Gift of the Holy Spirit and, consequently, immediately speaking in tongues. Such an outward manifestation is unnecessary to those who believe. But does that mean that the gift of speaking in tongues has ceased from the Church? Not necessarily. We know from Scripture and from Saint Irenaeus that many spoke in tongues in the early days of the Church prior to the advent of the Montanist movement with its imbalanced, aberrant eschatological ideas and strange forms of ecstatic inspirations which seemed not to be subject to the prophets (those thus inspired) contrary to the Apostle Paul's description of legitimate prophetic inspiration (1 Corinthians 14:32). When the bishops of the Church rejected the Montanist movement the public display of prophetic gifts such as tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecy as is described by Saint Irenaeus and in the "Shepherd of Hermas" seems to have decreased sharply within the context of the worship gatherings of the Churches. Bishops certainly have the authority to "quench the Spirit" and to "despise prophesyings," even legitimate prophesyings. If they could not do that, Saint Paul would not have commanded us not to do so (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). Nevertheless, even though the literature indicates a marked decrease in the manifestation of prophetic gifts within the public gatherings of the Ekklesia after the clerical crack-down on Montanism, the hagiography throughout the centuries and even into present times shows how the prophetic charismata have continued in the life of the Orthodox Church, not so much in worship gatherings, though at times, perhaps, during the homily, but mostly in the lives of the saints, in their encounters outside of the worship gatherings with others in need of help, encouragement, admonition, healing, encouragement, etc. Also, when we look at the writings of the Church Fathers and other saints, Orthodox Christians discern the inspirational operation of the Holy Spirit, working through the saints, and the Church has "held onto that which is good," and these things have become part of the Tradition. Tongues, of course, is absent from such stories, because speaking in tongues is for the edification of the speaker, not others and Paul encourages silence in the assembly in the absence of one gifted with interpretation. With the squelching of Montanist excesses and aberrations and the consequent cessation of public manifestations of the Prophetic Spirit in the corporate gatherings of the Church, the public exercise of tongues with its requisite companion gift of interpretation would have largely or completely ceased. Once the public exercise of such gifts was a relic of the past, what would be the point of the manifestation of tongues and interpretation, unless it were in the private, prayer lives of the saints. By interpretation of tongues the saints could still benefit the Church, not immediately in the context of the public assembly, but, later, through teaching, writing, and personal conversations outside of the context of the worshipping assembly. After the public manifestation of prophetic gifts in the corporate worship of the Church had ceased and with the incorporation of written prayers inspired by the Holy Spirit, judged to be good, and held fast, into the liturgical worship of the Church, the need for such public displays lessened greatly, perhaps to the point of being unbeneficial. When those who are spiritual listen to the liturgical prayers of the Church, they recognize the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as the source of these prayers and the chanters speak "as the oracles of God," and, truly, they are. When Christians listen to these prayers they are edified in the faith and when unbelievers hear them, they are convicted. The same Prophetic Spirit that inspired spontaneous prophecies in the early days of the Church is still in operation in the liturgies of the Church. Furthermore, spiritual discernment has been sharpened because of the intensity of the liturgical prayers among the Orthodox faithful. Speaking in tongues would be strange and out of place in the context of the great decency, order, and reverence of the Liturgy, but it is wrong for Orthodox to say that speaking in tongues is not for today, that it is not possible today, that God is bound and cannot grant such a gift to anyone today, or that such a gift could only be operative in a highly-sanctified Orthodox saint. The Orthodox serve a living God and, as Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says, "Faith is a large matter." We ought not to put limits on the possibilities of Faith while at the same time, judging all things, discerning the spirits, holding fast to that which is good. Whoever is not from God does not listen to the Church and that is how we discern the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error (1 John 4:6). The one who does not gather others into the unity of the Church, but rather scatters abroad, is not with Christ , but rather against Him (Matthew 12:30). We must beware of "prelest," spiritual pride, pride in so-called charismata, because such pride is a clear sign of alienation from God. Saint Gregory Palamas, in his "Triads," discusses the possibility of a genuine charismatic manifestation from God not benefitting the recipient spiritually. Better we not have any such gifts and be humble than be puffed up with pride and far from God with our "gifts." Such a gift could well become a curse to us if we are condemned by being lifted up with pride. When we truly benefit from a gift such as speaking in tongues, our hearts are afflicted with contrition and fear of God and joyful gratitude in the Holy Spirit, but if we are lifted up with pride or the complacency of laughter we ought to cease the speaking of such tongues. Bishop Kallistos Ware says no less in his excellent book THE ORTHODOX WAY.

Speaking in tongues is not speaking in an Angelic language. When the apostles received the Spirit and started speaking in tongues they spoke in the various languages of the people who were present there and the people understood what the apostles were saying. Speaking in tongues means actually speaking in foreign languages, Saint Porphirios and Saint Paisios had that gift. For example, when a German man visited Saint Paisios, he would speak to him in his native German language and the Saint would reply in Greek but the German man would hear it as German or if he was French as French. Exactly Rigas. The Greek word glossa means the tongue but it is also the word for language. So glossolalia in the historic context was the Holy Spirit descending on the Holy Apostles and allowing them to speak in languages they had no prior knowledge of. This glossolalia, the ability of them to speak in different languages allowed them to preach the Gospel to all nations, as instructed by Christ. This glossolalia can not be removed from this historic context. It is the allowance of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, so that the faith may be preached to all nations. No, the Orthodox do not believe in random babble as Protestant “Pentecostal” sects refer to glossa, as fiery tongues of made up gibberish. Such a practice has never existed in the Orthodox Church, nor will it ever.

Adisa Argani, your first statement regarding the monastics on Mount Athos is probably true. It seems to be particularly true with respect to Father Alexis [Trader] of Mount Athos, whose book IN PEACE LET US PRAY TO THE LORD has several problems in terms of logical consistency with the Scriptures, with the Holy Fathers, and with itself. The focus of the monks is not speaking in tongues or receiving any of the charismata, but rather their objective is the primary purpose for which the gift of tongues is given...to lead a person toward the experience of the unceasing prayer of the heart and communicative connection with God within the unity of the Church. One can speak in tongues and not have love. One can speak in tongues and cause division. One can speak in tongues and not benefit from the Grace being offered in the gift. One can glory in the gift and be displeasing to the Giver. One can speak in tongues and proclaim false doctrines and the teachings of demons. One can speak in tongues, genuine tongues as the Holy Spirit gives utterance--and be puffed up with pride due to the way one responds willfully to the gift. One can speak in tongues, work miracles, prophesy, cast out devils--all through the Power and Grace of the Holy Spirit--and yet be judged by Christ to be a worker of iniquity, not carryinig out the will of the Father, and being unknown to Christ. Not all speak in tongues, but all may attain the Grace of unceasing prayer of the heart, and that should be our focus. When we are in communication with God in prayer and not limiting God by our pride, our unbelief, or the preconceptions of our impoverished spiritual experience hitherto, God can give any of the charismata to us as He sees fit. May we be made worthy to walk in such a condition of Grace, Power, humility and love together with all the saints.

When Saint Paul wrote that, he said, "Tongues shall cease. Knowledge shall pass away." Has knowledge passed away? We are a faithless and perverse generation seeking after signs and, perhaps, no sign will be given to us at all...no healings, no weeping icons, no prophecies, no visions, no apparitions...nothing at all. But that doesn't mean that the gifts of God in the Kingdom of Heaven have all passed away, never to be experienced again on earth. We limit the operation of God's Grace in and through us by our faithlessness, our unbelief, and the false theologies proceeding out of our ignorance, unbelief, and impoverished experience. Lord, have mercy.

If greek orthodoxy is a Christian faith and they believe that the bible is the inspired word of God then they must believe in seaking in tongues, 1 cor14v4, Jude20 would suggest we need this gift to build up our spirit man and faith. Paul did not see this as a minor gift he boasted that he did it more than anyone else. It is not meant to be expressed in public unless u operate in tongues and interpretation. Proclaiming Gods message is prophecy and yes it's a greater gift as it builds up the church and its powerful and if u build up your spirit man then u better express both the gifts and the fruit of the spirit, particularly Gods agape love. The bible is not supposed to be a book for the purpose of knowing theology but is supposed to be lived.

The bible is merely a liturgical tool belonging to the orthodox church. One tool amongst many. One ingredient in the pie, important but of little value without the rest of the Ingredients.

@@ignatiusl.7478 h Hello. With all dur respect...Reformation is not new to the church and has saved billions from hell and left the Church with a lot of blessings if people want to receive from what the Holy Spirit has restored. My belief are not merely my opinion. They are grounded in what the Orthodox Church has taught for 2000 years. Pentecostalism is a movement with a wide verity of teachings that is a little over 100 years old. I do not accept their interpretation of scripture or their experiences uncritically. You need to understand something. We confess there is only one Church like the Bible says and we are that historical Church. So everything happening in Pentecostalism is happening outside the Body of Christ. I realize none of this probably makes any sense to you and sounds crazy. That’s fine, I’m okay with that. I hope to see you in heaven. Keep seeking truth.

@@ignatiusl.7478 I hope you see u in heaven 2 brother...I get told hhe same thing by yhe Roman Catholics. You wil be pleased to know that I'm not a pentecostal. The truth of speaking in tongues was restored in the Welsh revival and azuzu Street revivals in the USA in 1905. Im more about the coming Kingdom of God movement, part of that is a realization that Jesus precious blood wasn't spilt to have a divided Church.All Christians everywhere agree on one point and thats the cross and thats the central point of the next move of God.

@@minajkreys8295 because it wasn’t a widely spoken language at the time and still isn’t. There’s only ~12 million Armenians in the world and less than 2 million in the country itself. Armenians = The people of Ararat or Urartu... Where Noah’s Ark landed. They consider themselves descendants of Hayk, which I believe is Japheth’s grandson. Armenians are an ancient people with a rich culture and history, yet are forgotten/discarded because they don’t have political/economic leverage like their hostile, neighboringTurkic countries. They recently lost more of their ancestral land [Artsakh]. A This land has many ancient Christian churches, monasteries, and relics which are being destroyed or whitewashed by Azerbaijan. In case you didn’t know, Armenia was declared the first Christian nation in 301 AD. The Armenian Apostolic Church was founded by Jesus’ apostle, Jude or Thaddeus. Armenians also suffered a genocide in the early 20th century under Ottoman rule. The Armenian Genocide commemoration day is coming up in a month. 4/24/1915 is when the Ottoman government rounded up Armenians in power, intellectuals, influencers, etc and murdered them. They then moved in to rounding up and killing 1.5 million Armenian Christians over the next few years. This genocide is still denied by the Turkish government and most Turkic people today. This genocide led to one of the largest diasporas in history. There are also many people living in modern day Turkey who are Armenian and don’t bene know it since some families hid their identities or gave away their children to Turkish families. People who have been finding out their true identity are converting from Islam to Christianity... I know this answer was long winded and a bit off topic but it’s important to share this information. Armenia is a cradle of Christianity and is under the threat of being wiped off the face of the earth.
