With memories still fresh from the first Cold War, leaders in Africa, Asia, and across the Global South have repeatedly said they do not want any part of a second Great Power rivalry. But as tensions between the U.S. and China steadily deteriorate, the pressure on these smaller, non-aligned countries is going to surge.
The geopolitical dynamics are changing very fast.
Jane Perlez, a renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who spent more than thirty years reporting for The New York Times as a foreign correspondent, laid out the challenges in a new eight-part podcast series on the burgeoning U.S.-China strategic competition.
Jane joins Eric & Cobus from Sydney to share her insights on where this competition is going and what impact she thinks it will have on developing countries.

We know what China is doing in Africa and we don't forget that the western world has been in our Continent for Centuries without considering us humans but things they could use dictate and still their resources from. I think China knows that and have experienced the same treatment.

Thief and robbers don't want Africa to stand up for itself. China got in the way. But ooops China enjoys more freedom and operates more capitalistic than the old guards.

Only the US is drumming the Cold War and not China. China always encourages working together, Win-win and Co-existence

US wants power to dominate. And it has many weapons. Based on its awful records, I cannot in good conscience believe anything coming from Washington!

I think you are vastly overestimating how much influence the U.S. has in most of these countries. I can tell you that is definitely not the case here in Southeast Asia and certainly not in Africa. - Eric

A documentary “Rather” on Netflix depicts the life and works journalist Dan Rather. It describes his hard works, doggedness, and true believer of his profession that are sorely missed in today’s mainstream media. The sad truth is the western mainstream media are manipulated by the corrupted politicians who are manipulated by their financial backers. Your program and journalists like Jane and historian Rama are rarely seen indeed.

Excellent episode. Given how comlpicated and interlinked all these issues are it almost seems relevant/necessary for you guys to cover the internal politics of both US and EU since they play off what happens in specially Russia and China. Anyway, great coverage and discussion.

The man speaking is the Zambian president, I am a Zambian and he is speaking for himself when he says we have historical ties with Americans....... No no no, we have no connections whatsoever, they are European settlers who stole another peoples land and then went on to enslave another people on the African continent....... So we are not connected anywhere, maybe he is connected historically to the supremacist in America, but not me or my ancestors..... I feel a connection to black Americans because they have suffered at the hands of these same people...... By the way ruto is a sellout.

Historically, the Non-Aligned Movement met in Bandung, Indonesia to address similar concerns for newly-independent post-colonial nations trying to avoid the Cold War polarization between Capitalism vs Communism. The results were decades of coups and regime change, documented in the 1947 establishment of the CIA Central Intelligence Agency and NSC National Security Council as well as the Dulles Brothers. John Foster Dulles would not shake hands with Zhou Enlai, a diplomatic snub which led to 30 years of no diplomatic recognition from 1949-1979.

When Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was detained and arrested in Canada, China was definitely still on the backfoot. The arbitrary arrest taught Beijing a great lesson. Five years on, the table has turned. Washington and EU's tariffs on Chinese EVs is indicative of the collective west on their backfoot.

Former Yale Chinese History Professor Jonathan Spence once said at a UC Berkeley conference that America only came upon China at its lowest ebb during the century of humiliation so there’s long or deep understanding of Joseph Needham’s book on China’s scientific inventions and philosophical history.
