Yeah, there's no way that thing beats out tons of other cards. They just made a list based on cards currently not banned in commander, that aren't commanders themselves, and that are overpowered in their play groups. Several being likely very close to an all encompassing list, ie sol ring, mana crypt, but the reasoning of most is just heavy playgroup bias.

Roaming Throne is certainly an honorable mention at best. It's extremely good, but the Power 9 isn't simply extremely good. The thing is we're talking about the best cards in a format. Not cards that are just really good. Cards like Rhystic Study for example don't make sense to opt out of from a power perspective. Not playing then doesn't make sense if we're talking about optimizing a deck as much as possible. When I think Power 9, I think not playing the card is a very rare exception from that perspective. There are reasons not to play these super powerful cards. Budget, intended power level, and intended gameplay. Those are the main exceptions. Imagine someone saying "I don't play Rhystic in this deck because it isn't good enough for this deck." That would be insane. If someone said "I'm not playing Rhystic in this deck because I have other options that fit what my deck does and I personally would rather not play it.", That there would make sense. With Roaming Throne there are so many reasons that it wouldn't make a list. One is simply a lack of triggered abilities in the deck. Another could be a lack of need to double up on triggered abilities available. There are few blue decks that could turn their nose up at Rhystic. There are many decks that could turn their nose up at Roaming Throne.

@@d.a.d.-ohgosh specifically, and holistically, this. The gd reasons he gave for smothering tithe, and the noninclusion of so many things that are cheaper, more accessible, or generally better just AHHHH.

I cut Smothering Tithe out of decks like crazy. It's too slow.

If you're gonna call the cards power 9 they should probably be shoe-ins at even the highest power level. Great Henge and Smothering Tithe are too slow to be universal includes in cEDH last I checked. Maybe Mystic Remora and Vampiric Tutor instead? Otherwise I like the list I think, and my suggestions do ruin the color balance you had going.

@@bert_MH That is true, honestly I just play for fun, so I can't really tell how the cards would do in the cEDH. I thought it would be cool to have one for each color.

The token tripling is a replacement effect, not a triggered ability so I don’t think that works

I hit Roaming Throne and Ojer Taq in the same pack… immediately built a deck around that

@@Yepnopeyep you know, you’re 100% right. I have been doing this the wrong way. Even if the replacement is considered “triggered”, if it happens an “additional time”, now nothing is being created because it already happened and resolves to nothing. Still helpful in the deck with all my human ETBs, but not for Ojer Taq itself.

I don’t understand why referís protection is considered so good, I’ve never put it in a commander deck

Sol ring wasn't that powerful when you also had Black Lotus, 5 moxes, Mishra's, Tron Lands etc. Time Twister was fantastic because you could get back your Time Walk, Ancestral, and refill your hand. Sol ring only jumped in (play) value because the other mana rocks were banned. It's still a great card, but not as good back then. I doubt it would have even been played much before the Restricted List was created.

Why? You saying that doesn't make it so. Time Walk from the original power-9 is pretty bad in mono-red-stompy.

@@PaulSzkibik oh sorry. i meant "always a good draw in any deck *that can run them*". the power nine is 6 artifacts and 3 blue spells but clearly i was saying the power nine aren't the power nine because they have color identity. i thought it was obvious since were talking about commander that "in a deck that can run it" is implied. but there's not a single game where you go oh one of the Moxen well i wish i hadn't drawn this unless you were actively fishing for a response (a more fitting critique of my statement then being like "actually color identity exists so NYEH"). however in the video its basically what i said these are cards that are auto includes in basically any deck that can run them and you'll almost never be sad because you drew them. they're cards you want in you hand early game, mid game, late game. their "color identity" doesn't really matter. also just anyone saying anything doesn't make it so. just because a you-tube says it doesn't mean its bound by law. we can *disagree* all we want its a silly card game dude. don't be an ass.

@@jamescain9464 yeah, maybe I was a bit too agressive and intentionally misunderstanding. Apologies. I still think you didn't give enough justification for the WHY of your opinion. In my mind there is no reason, when talking about the most powerful cards, to exclude some of them because they're not good in 100% of the decks you can put them into. In the end, even a Sol-Ring doesn't make it into every single decklist despite being a top-tier card. E.g. some deck that is all creatures (e.g. a "Sythis, Harvest’s Hand" enchantment deck, where sol-ring doesn't help you cast your commander and also doesn't draw you a card when you play it etc.). So that would disqualify Sol-Ring after your interpretation. Even if you don't like the example, I'm sure there is an example of a good deck, that really doesn't want sol-ring, or any other otherwise really powerful card. If you drew this hard line in the sand, probably no card would qualify because every card HAS a card type and there are always decks that say "I really don't want any cards of type X in the 99.". You could losen up that restriction but the point to which you losen it up... is arbitrarily chosen. I *DO* agree, that broken combo cards or otherwise really specific cards don't really belong into the power 9. I also would disagree with Thassa's Oracle because it's just a broken combo piece that doesn't do anything by itself. I do understand, that this is just a arbitrary. Cheers.

Uhhhh so I have a humans deck from Eowyn and all my humans have triggered abilities including the commander. This card is insane. Getting 4 2/2 with haste on combat alone is incredible value.

Rhystic Study? doesn't deal damage. Sol ring? no it doesn't... Dockside? no chance against the Colossal Dreadmaw. Can't disagree.

Excluding lands, you can only have one of any card in a commander deck. The only exception to this I can think of is Nazgul.

Yes, it absolutely does

From my understanding, Pantlaza's "Do this only once each turn." prevents the effect from both successfully resolving and triggering. So even if you got another Pantlaza discover on the stack, either from copying somehow or from re-triggering with roaming throne, it would not discover when it resolves. I'm building a deck around them right now, and it looks like flicker, cloning (specifically cloning that bypasses legend rule, bc legend rule applies before etb), and adjacent triggered abilities (like Curator of Sun's Creation) are the only ways to discover multiple times. (Let me know if you find more, though!)

FOOD CHAIN? They have great cards that can definitely be borderline cEDH… craterhoof, tooth and nail can be a game ender/changer for sure. May not be a cyclonic rift but it can be in the right build (especially at instant speed)!! But don’t let green fool you man, they’re sleepers. 🤣🤣

Nyxbloom Ancient?? It's not a power 9 but def high 8

Oracle is only a thing with one or two other cards. No one is ever just going to cast it, as a single spell. It’s a combo piece and not a power 9 card. I am not agreeing with you on, 4/5 of the cards.

@@nikolaimller5397 Time twister is only a thing with one or two other cards. Without enablers it isn't really that good of a card. Its a combo piece and not a power nine card. Oracle makes the power 9 because 1. Its the strongest card in cEDH period and has been for years and 2. has a similar reputation to the other cards on this list in normal edh. I do think its the closest to not being power 9 not this list but when people say whats the strongest nonlegend card in commander thoracle is probably in 1/2 of those in cEDH and 1/10 in edh. There are multiple cards that make it win the game under 5 mana with it immediately pretty much

Cards are trash in edh outside of certain cEDH deck builds.

Depends what you consider new. I took a break after 2017 and came back last year and saw what a mess some of these sets caused

@@smurfpoppin4470 tbh. I have a mtg collection and I have a portfolio of financial investments, those are not the same and neither should they be treated as the same! It's not healthy for the game if new cards are just inferior to the old ones, and all the good staples are from 15 years ago, that leads to solved meta and little reason to buy newer cards.

The one ring and the roaming throne are the only ones that are new cards from the last 3 years, all other cards in this power 9 are older... It is a good sign that new cards can compete with staples, otherwise the card game is not evolving

But it costs 3, so you're really just generating 4 mana. And it's situational, it's only good if an opponent has a full hand.

Black is the new “my color pie is whatever i say it is”. They couldnt remove enchants and now they can, give it some years and black will get artifact removal. Recent design team is heavily biased towards black the same way the previous team was biased towards green in the krasis/nissa/once upon a time/oko/uro/omnath era

No, it doesn't. The game is so broken that one card helps vs power creep.
