Denis Villeneuve's Dune adaptation is set to release in December of 2020. In this video, I break down who the Spacing Guild is, the design of their ships called Heighliners, what guild navigators are, how space travel works in the Duniverse and what we might from the spacing guild if this movie stays true to Frank Herbert's book.

9:28 The 3rd Stage Navigator did not come to chat with the Emperor, he came to replace him, and with 2 sentences he sets in motion the course of events that remove the emperor and replaces him with Paul. The entire movie's events are triggered and occur because of what the Navigator says. The emperor is too small minded to realize he is a sheep being consumed by the lion. The 'witch' is a pawn in the hands of the Navigator, easily manipulated into empowering Paul. The Emperor is replaced because of his insane stupidity of threatening the Guild Masters, and the whole of galactic civilization, by endangering the Dune world, the only source of Spice. The 3rd Stage Navigator can Fold Space, moving ships across the galaxy... his words he speaks against the emperor, seeing into the future knowing they will bring him down. The Spice Must Flow... or all the Navigators die, the guild dies, and the Galactic civilization dies with them.

@@SeaJay_Oceans A bit of a fail here, unless you only reference the 1984 film. Navigators fold their mind to fit other dimensions and rules, to see a path forward they have already taken in the future. Holtzman effect is what moves the ship through space (and time?), although how a Navigator plugs into the ship is unclear. I always fancied it a borderline violation of the Butlerian Jihad, binding the mind of the Navigator to the controls of the ship. It is worth noting that the Guild never cared who was in power, as long as they get their spice. So dooming the Emperor sped up the ultimate collapse of spice production. Not real bright. If they truly understood how to see the future, they would have sent two assassins against Paul, or denied Leto access to the guild at all. The Guild was never good at seeing outcomes beyond where their minds were travelling. A limitation noted repeatedly by Paul and Leto II. This does not even consider the later technologies which blocked seeing future possibilities (the No spheres).

Reading it as a 12 year old in the 70's, my first imagining of the navigator in Dune Messiah looked a bit like a big, but realistic looking anthropomorphic Sea Monkey as they were drawn in the old comic ads. This was helped due to the navigator being treated with derision by the others at the meeting, and emphasised by the comical movements he made when agitated and the vulnerability he felt being inside a planetbound structure, despite it being carefully designed for his comfort. Like a scared little goldfish with googly eyes...both comical and piteous.

If you think about it, the Bene Gesserit and Spacing Guild have a common origin in Zufa Cenva. She was leader of the Sorceresses of Rossak, that evolved into the Bene Gesserit, and her daughter Norma Cenva was the first prescient navigator and together with her husband and sons created the Guild & designed the ships.

That book i really did not like, to me, it looked like a tryhard attempt to carry on F. H. 's legacy. The writers had nowhere near the writing skills of F. H. Its incredible how he could compress the storytelling, making it so intetesting and compact at the same time. Now these new books speak a lot but say not much, long and redundant with many repeated parts, quite boring and pale. Dont want to hurt anyone's feelings but they are nowhere close to F. H. I've been thinking about how I was going to write this post so bare with me because this will be long. In the other books Norma Cenva is the first navigator and from the few descriptions of the places she appears in her tank it's big enough for her, one other person and some space to spare. I believe that the tanks take up about the area of a Mini Cooper and between 6-7 feet tall. For look if you take the "little gray alien", make the hands and feet more like a cross of the webbing from a duck and the wings of a bat, then elongate the head so it's more fish like you have a good start. A picture you put up in this video of 3 designs on it, I think the body is close to the middle design. In the books one of the guildsman has his contact fall out and his eyes are the same as a Freman, I think the guildsman are failed navigators. In the other books there's is suggestions of different levels of failed navigators, not everyone can become a navigator, some are physically distorted, some go crazy, some die and others go on to do different things because they couldn't make it to navigator level. There is a part in the books that talks about twins, one becomes a navigator and the other is sent home. That's my opinion.

The way the aliens in Arrival were portrayed shows that DV prefers surreal, somewhat disturbing imagery. I think he will endeavor to make the Navigators look human in plan, but with enlarged eyes and heads, webbed extremities, and a sleek appearance to give an unconscious sense of speed and heightened awareness. (The Lynch version wasn't human and reminded me of a space manatee, and the miniseries made them look too delicate. ) I think he'll take inspiration from dolphins, but anthropomorphize and greatly enlarge their heads and leave them with recognizable hands. If I recall correctly, in the book the Navigator was able to consume a bar of melange, so s/he must have hands.

In the original Dune book i read there is a part when Leto and Paul are talking about the navigators, as "they are mutants" and "you may they have no human form anymore?" Leto says they will probably never see any one of them. The way F. H. is telling about them was scary and exciting to read. This is the first mention of guild navigators, the second is the mini encyclopedia at the end of the book, where there is some description of them as they leave in spice gas filled tanks, mutating them. Their cranium growing huge. I think the implementation of David Lynch was quite ok, and the containment tank and the guild agents costumes are downright amazing. Not to mention the translator device held by the bald guy, that scene rocks! About the new movie, the director probably will introduce a navigator scene as he cannot leave this morbid but curious scene out. Now my imagination is about these guys are that they were once humans, badly mutated, as they sacrificed, or traded their humanity to something more to their thinking. Still, people badly deformed, not some alien shit or fantasy or undead etc.. So, by F.H. the enlarged head, full blue eyes, shrunken hands, the skin having the colour of orange spice gas? Idk, also they are floating in their tanks, why are they floating, i saw none of those suspensors on their bodies. The face should be more like a human, not a snail, besides the blue eyes, and lack of hair, the nose and mouth being developed back, getting small but not like of a bird. Should not be seen clearly but like some scary horror shite

They're floating in the Spice Gas... The Tank is so full of compressed spice gas it creates enough pressure to suspend them in the tank. Also D.Lynch's version of the Navigator was spot on for me, almost like a big infant head and a streamlined body for floating in the gas.

At about 6:30 in the video it is mentioned that the "Spacing Guild maintains an entire monopoly on space travel and can charge whatever they want for their ships and services". It might be worthwhile to note that while the Guild pretty much has an effective monopoly on faster that light travel through space, they may not have complete control over the movement of whatever cargo in the Dune universe since there is mention of "Smuggler Guilds" as well. Why there isn't an complete explanation of how exactly they exist, by speculation one can assume they work a bit like real life smugglers by either by bribing (and/or deception) of whatever conventional shipping means (which in this case is the Spacing Guild itself) to move their contraband or by using whatever other means which I image would likely involve ships that are without any Guild pilot to guide them. The first option would likely be a costly and complex option because one would likely have to use another Houses name (likely one of the lower ones) as a front as to not raise suspicion from the Guild and then to insure safe passage one would have to bribe their pass certain checks that might alert any authorities as to what the actual cargo that is being moved. The second option is both costly and desperate since although there isn't any cost from bribes/favors or risk from not passing certain checks there is about a 12.5% chance of any cargo and personal sent on a ship that doesn't use a Guild navigator will be lost. Perhaps there is a 3rd option which might involve employing either a rogue navigator that is more or less similar to a Guild navigator or perhaps using an illegal computer to plot one's course to improve one's odds of getting to their destination in one piece. In the game "Battle for Dune", in the 2nd to the last finale battle a large portion of the player's army leave Arrakis and are used to assault one of their adversaries home worlds it turns out that the Guild ships leave them stuck on the planet and the armies and base left on Arrakis are themselves attacked by armies either employed by the Guild or loyal to allies of the Guild. If the Guild truly has a monopoly on faster than light space travel then one could assume that it would be impossible for any House to manage to get their army back to Dune in order to stop the Guild (since the Guild would NOT transport an enemy army back to Arrakis to attack their own forces no matter how much they were willing to pay), yet when faced with such a dilemma each advisor to a House that they can simply utilize a "smugglers" guild to bring them back to Arrakis and in doing so they would not be alerting the Spacing Guild to their arrival until it was too late for the Guild to do anything about it. Whether this could actually happen according to official Dune canon is uncertain but from what little I know I don't think it has been labeled as impossible according to canon either.

A very good summation of the Spacing Guild. Myself, I prefer the David Lynch Heighliners over the Mini-Series. Seeing that massive cylindrical vessel hanging (silently) over Caladan, then folding space, travel without moving, made a lasting impression on me. The Mini-Series version was, ok, but, still inferior to the movies design imo. Though, I will admit the artificial gravity is more 'realistic' design feature. But even there, is is implied that some form of gravity manipulation is possible. If this is the case, then the Movie version is the superior design by virtue its internal volume will be so much greater. However, I had no problems with how the mini-series portrayed a senior guild Steersman we see in the fold sequence and later on, Edric. So, like the movie ship better, but feel that perhaps the mini-series did the Senior Guild Navigators very well.

The highliners in Dune WERE described in the book as being roughly cylindrical with vast open spaces inside for ships to dock. The 'passengers didn't leave their own ships. The ships mode of travel was described as 'folding space', exactly as Einstein explained what a worm hole was by describing folding a piece of paper that to dots had been marked on the top & bottom of. Carl Sagan went one better by doing this & then sticking a pencil through the dots to make a hole. This principle describes instant travel from one place to another just like walking from one room to another, but ever since the advent of filmed sci-fi, everyone except David Lynch's Dune has portrayed wormholes as tunnels which they are not. There is no tunnel between two rooms, just a doorway.

At one point, Paul describes a particularly gigantic sand worm as "bigger than a guild highliner". Since sand worms are cylindrical, I think it's a safe assumtion that highliners were as well.

The space folding scene in the Lynch dune was odd but it made sense to me anyway- he picks the start and end point, divines the path, then makes the two points of space coexist temporarily so as to travel instantly without moving. "these ships can hold many thousands of people"...that's a big understatement. Judging from the size of these ship depicted in the movie I would tend more to "millions of people". But besides that in another video you also said that Dune "plays thousands of years in the future" which is also a big understatement regarding that multiple 10.000 years have passed after humanity has explored space and the spacing guild is born and since then again multiple 10.000 years passed until the happenings of "Dune". So my guess is that the plot of dune plays around 50.000 - 80.000 years A.D.

Small spoiler: In the new movie, I think that some Guild Navigators were shown. In the scene of the ceremony that's near the start where control of Arrakis transfers to the Atreides, there are five figure that emerge from the globular ship with the Emperor's messenger. They are dressed in a full head-to-toe white outfit, a cape that covers them, and their faces are covered by a helmet with a spherical face covering. However, you can't see their faces, just an orange cloud inside the helmet. I'm not sure that they are Guild Navigators or simply Guild representatives, but Leto, Gurney, Hawat are talking about the cost of the trip for the Emperor's delegates to come to Caladan, and they mention that Guild Navigators were among the party.

In support of Lynch’s vision, the other being we see mutated by the spice is Leto II, the god emperor/ worm God. There’s more to his mutation of course, he actually becomes a worm but showing the guild navigators as worm like makes sense given the intimate connection between the sand worms and the spice.
@pourattitude4206

The transformation of Leto II was completely unique. His entire body was encased in sandtrout to precipitate his transformation. This is not possible for anyone else. Only Leto and Paul before him were in direct communion with the Sandworm species. Paul could have done it but considered it too terrible. Leto understood that it was the only way to achieve the Golden Path.

The way prescience works is different than clairvoyance. I didn't really get it until I had read the books several times. No one can see the future. Navigators, Paul, Leto, and the bene Gesserit are able to predict the future, not see it. They are able to predict it in extreme detail in some cases, like Paul, Leto, or a navigator plotting a course. They're playing out every course of action and predicting what would happen, then choosing the predicted outcome they prefer most. Remember that Paul was trained as a mentat before he changed. It's easier to think of them like that, just much, much, much better at it. Instead of only being able to predict what will happnen on a small scale, like Thufir can, like who might win a battle, they can predict what everyone will do for thousands of years. It's exactly what they did. Paul and Leto both saw the path, but Paul couldn't bring himself to become the worm.

I love your videos. I've been doing lore research on many franchises and I'm working my way through all of Dune. These videos have helped me immensely in my research. I would point out though that your comparison to how folding space and hyperdrive work is not entirely accurate. Hyperspace is like "subspace" in Star Trek. A layer that is like a framework to our universe. Ships in Star Wars travel more like the Borg in Star Trek, where they jump from normal space, to subspace (hyperspace). The comment Han says about running into objects is because objects with mass in our layer of space have a "mass shadow" in hyperspace. A ship reaches the speed of light, and draw hyper matter from hyperspace and kind of greases up the ship with that hyper matter, allowing the ship to slip partially into hyperspace. Star Trek ships literally warp space by expanding the space behind the ship, and shrinking it in front of the ship. As it travels, the manipulation of space allows the ship to apparently travel faster than light because of the distance covered, which is only fully apparent after space is no longer warped. Folding space normally operates a lot like warp, but in an extreme sense. The ship itself never moves, but enough power is used to bring the two points together, then unfold with the ship in the other point. This is a lot like Battlestar Galactica with their FTL drives. This makes me wonder why the navigators are said to "find a course" as it were. Traveling without moving should not require a course to chart. Why do you think they call it that? PS - My wife hates the look of the navigators either. Not that she dislikes how they were translated to screen...she just thinks they are gross.
@Brainfryde
@Brainfryde 3 года назад
Great video! I'm hoping for something close to the SciFi mini-series Navigator, but as long as the eyes are done correctly... FTL travel does get better explained (by Herbert standards) in the later books, with the ships themselves traveling through other dimensions to achieve such high speeds, as the very laws of physics were different in the other dimensions. This is why even the Ixian plotting computers were not able to assure safety like a navigator. A navigator sees across the multiple dimensions, which allowed them to see the ship at the earliest time at a remote destination, unharmed, and then tracked the ship backwards through time to find the course. This tracked through other dimensions, but only those they would survive in. Fun fact: Holtzman effect is also the theory of shield technology. It is why a "slow" weapon could be moved, but the random displacements in the field caused fast moving objects to fly apart and bounce off, with energy weapons (lasers) causing a power cascade of nuclear proportions :o So, not so much a shield as a "fast death zone." It is attenuated to organics to keep it from killing the user, but the rules for this "science" were never expounded on that I know. Keep in mind, I only read the original books, including Brian Herbert's conclusion. I do not care for Kevin Anderson's writing, or I would have read more.

In the Dune lore, the Spacing Guild have its origins in Norma Cenva... She is once mentioned in the 7 Dune novels, but in the novels by his son Brian, Norma is a very important player, as well at the end, during Kralizek... About the Butlerian Jihad, mentions how it was Norma who devised what later was known as the Holzmann engines and circuits, able to fold space-time... Norma, was the mishappen daughter of a Sorceress from the planet Rossak, Sufa Cenva... The sorceress's husband, Aurelius Venport was always good to Norma... it is an intriguing background set of stories that explain the reason for the Butlerian Jihad, the Golden Path, and other Dune "mysteries"... Certainly, the Honored Matres fleeing into the old core of the empire and defeating everything in its path, is explained at the end of those additional books... There is also the origin of the worms and the sand trout... the lore says they were placed in Dune, which originally was a lush world, like Caladan... but transformed the planet into a desert with a completely restricted and efficient water cycle, designed to maintain the survival of the sand trout and the worms... Little is mentioned on that respect, but it hints to the "muadru" language inscriptions found under the main complex in Arrakeen and other parts of the Dune universe... I would love to hear your comments on those other Dune books...

Point of clarification: At the end of Dune, the two Guild agents who are part of Emperor Shaddam IV’s entourage are identified by Paul as “Navigators,” which they confirm. These two individuals are described as humanoid and exhibit reasonably strong prescient abilities as well as some degree of standing within the Guild. If they are to be believed, then based on this not all Navigators have the altered physical forms and require the tanks. Edric in Dune Messiah is specifically referred to as a “Steersman” (on more than one occasion) and Steersman-Ambassador more formally. Edric is also shown to have very strong prescient awareness as well as high standing in the Guild. The implication seems to be that the more physically changed beings are Steersmen, an advanced level of Navigator, while there exist still other Guild agents who are Navigators yet are not as physically altered (still appear humanoid). Perhaps the still-humanoids are simply not as far along in their progress and ranking to become full Steersmen. Considering the geriatric properties of Melange, the Steersmen could be quite advanced in age relative to the humanoid Navigators and other Guildsmen. Dune Messiah also implies that many of the Guild live and have adapted their forms to zero-g (“deep space embassy” and the like) and that the wondrous and weird forms of the Steersmen is as much an adaptation to zero-g as anything else (such as a result of spice use). Yet they still employ numerous agents with bodies adapted to planetary conditions. Most of these are referred to by the more generic term, Guildsmen. Presumably the large zero-g and spice gas-filled tanks simulate what the environment of the Steersmen would be like on the Heighliners and on their space stations. At the same time others within the guild referred to as “Navigators” do not have the altered forms or require the tanks (such as the original two at the end of Dune).

If his film Arrival is any indication of how they might look then I think we'll get some pretty visually stunning guild navigators

It's a shame that Villeneuve didn't include guild navigators in the new movie. I would have loved to see his take on them.

There’s plenty more to come.

was one of my very few disappointments with the new movie, but it was incredible regardless (as a long time dune fan, read all the frank herbert original books etc.). hopefully the navigators (or just one) and space travel are depicted to some extent in the second part, now that it is greenlit! woohooooooo!

I think that some Guild Navigators were shown in Villeneuve's new movie.

@@adammcinnes5615 yes I noticed this too, the orange clouds looked very much like spice as well.

I often imagine the guild Navigators looking more like Abe Sapient from HellBoy

Most filmed versions of Dune get it wrong. There is no "folding space" in Guild ships. Rather, in the book, the spice allows the Navigators to see into the future so they may know the paths of safety so the ships can travel at super-light speeds.

In order to reduce the risk of crashes and make the navigator's job easier, one would want ships to be narrow with no sticky-out bits. In order to generate artificial gravity and (making passengers happy and maintaining the health of the crew), one would want to spin them. So cylinders make sense. I can't think of a more practical solution in context.
