What Is The Traveler's Past? [Genshin Impact Lore, Analysis, and Theory]

I only just now realized that Dainsleif was essentially the Abyss Sibling's Paimon.

During the Chasm/Archon Quest, a thing Lumine didn't take into account about Aether, is that shortly after seeing the shared memory, he is starting to deviate from his sister's ideals. The Abyss Leader expect that at end of their journey, their sibling would finally understand their reasons and join them, however, siblings always tends to be opposite from each other. Aether may be able to see the big picture of Teyvat, but that doesn't mean he approve of Lumine's choices.

I think the fear of losing his sister and how things look made the present nightmare of the Traveler in 2.7 Perilous Trail Quest. Given the Traveler feels like her endeavour with the Abyss seperates the too, he now blames the Abyss itself for her path.

I think it's more likely that the Traveler's memory of entering Teyvat was wayy, wayy before the Cataclysm. In the We Will Be Reunited Trailer, you see Lumine (or the Abyss sibling) kneeling down and clenching their fist against their chest, in front of what is described as The Cataclysm. It is most likely that the nation the Abyss sibling sees burning in front of them is Khaenri'ah, which is supported by Raiden Ei's animated sequence from the Inazuma Archon Quest, where she states, “ But I've seen a nation stride forward and lose everything to the Heavenly Principles ", where the same image of a burning nation is displayed. So if the travelers, who supposedly JUST entered Teyvat 500 years ago (during the Cataclysm), see this random nation burning aflame, I don't think the Abyss sibling would have made such an emotional gesture towards a place they weren't already emotionally invested in. Hence coming to the conclusion that the Travelers entered Teyvat a long time ago, and probably adventured all over the place. I know this doesn't really explain how the Abyss sibling was travelling partners with Dain, while the other sibling was somewhere else completely. But to be fair, Venti does have a voiceline that asks our Traveler if they can't remember him. Which is very sus.

So if the traveler would say to Venti, "in your eyes, I see my world" it's not a pickup line.🤣🤣

Lumine wanting to revive "homeland" reminds me of Otto wanting to return Kalen. For some reason I think Lumine is up to something similar.

Does anyone have any thoughts why the respective abyss twin is referred to as "Your Highness"? I feel like Khaenri'ah, a place with reverence for their original royalty (seeing Dain's self-loathing over failing to protect them) wouldn't so easily call a random helper like the twin, "Your Highness". This is also going off the assumption that the Abyss Order are completely made up of former Khaenri'ahns. Even though we've saved Mondstadt, Liyue, and Inazuma, no one really does so much as call us a hero of sorts. And the phrasing of 'homeland' specifically, represents deep emotional ties. For people who tout that they travel and call themselves adventurers, calling somewhere 'homeland' feels strange. It's such a specific term, not "home" or the "the land I call home", but "homeland", it sounds like something you'd hear from a nationalist of sorts. Hate and resentment over a number of centuries could probably corrupt the twin to some degree, fanaticizing their ideals, but blaming such terminology on 'corruption' feels narratively weak, to me at least. I also don't think the twins are the original royalty, or related to them, but I feel like they have very deep ties to Khaenri'ah in a way that hasn't been revealed yet. Or maybe Khaenri'ahn civilization has connections to something a lot deeper than just Teyvat. I also don't play Honkai, so I can't really make any comparisons there either. Granted I'm not terribly invested in hidden lore and haven't brushed up on the older archon quests so I could very well be missing something, but it's interesting.

I always asume that the Zholing speach is just meta comentary about us being the player and that we have seen a lot of other games, so when the genshin servers are turnd off we are the "backup" of the tales of the game

although it seems like he's struggling with being separated from his sister, what if this is just one of countless stories that they've experienced, what if for them this big story is insignificant in scale.

I still find it extremely odd u can't see Celestia in inazuma. Also I find it kinda odd that if u are in the wave rider boat off the cost of the last inazuma Island the sky goes real dark. Feels kinda..off... If u ask me

The Star Travelers always reminded me of that movie "Stardust" in which one of the stars fell down from the sky and took human form in our world (the magical part) and the first time I watched that cinematic of the twins like shooting stars ( 2:56 ) and then Ei saying that "we used to be one of them?" as if the traveler were talking bulshit, that kinda of stayed with me and now I think of them like that, a literal star that travels and witness countless worlds.

Traveler reminds me of the Doctor from Doctor Who. Both have similar experiences to exploring worlds and meeting people and trying to fix whatever happens with companions (or a sibling for the Traveler's case) while also being ancient and nearly immortal. But that's it. The difference between these characters is that The Doctor does something called "Regeneration". When they "die" they get replaced by a new body with a new personality, though their core memories are intact. There's no text that tells about The Traveler's mortality so I assume they just don't age.

It will be interesting if we consider K.K. as Kevin Kaslana of Houkai 3rd. That means the twins could be much more stronger than any Archon in Teyvat when Lumine and Aether take back their real power. As that power are based on Houkai energy, the twins also be able to destroy the whole Teyvat land. Therefore, the unknown god must consume much of her power to seal twins' real power, that would waken the Celestia and make Celestia unable to stop the coming revolt of the Archons. No doubt cryo Archon had sense the wakening of the Celestia and she decided to take this marvellous opportunity, other Archons, such as Morax and Barbatos, they took their best way to support cryo Archon's revolt.

So I think everyone and their mother knows the Project Arc theory for the travelers at this point, the Travelers are the two things the Previous Era of Honkai sent into space in order to preserve the human genome. Now I'm kinda colorblind, but don't Venti's eyes look like Earth when viewed from space? Not to mention cbt1 lines about the travelers escaping from the Honkai, we'll discard these since they probably changed it, but the world ending threat turning civilizations into dust is in line with mo of the Honkai. Btw its known that the PE couldn't have figured out cloning, so they most likely sent out people into space to preserve humanity, do with that information as you will.

Lumine being the leader of the abyss is a recent thing (from Karya) Also the heralds line from 2.6 Lumine flashback might suggest she might've been acting as sort of an advisor or something to the abyss because he says " so the proposal finally had your blessings" if she was the leader shouldn't it be something like she approved it or commands it. Blessing sounds a bit out of place seeing that Khenriahn's never believed in gods. If this the case it would suggest that their Chasm experiment was in preparation phase long before the sibling met or maybe even but before Arther woke up (after 500 years) I'm wondering if this is the case did the Abyss didn't have a leader before ? Because kaeya says "they're United under a single leader" To which Paimon says "they have a leader now?" So what was Lumine doing during that period and what was the abyss doing without a leader They most likely had alot of different faction amongst themselves because of kaeya emphasizing "United " If he was just telling us about how they have a leader he would've just said so I can think of two possibilities Either Lumine has been going solo across the world (most likely in the Dark sea) after the Cataclysm OR She didn't woke up 500 years ago (after encountering the sustainer) but a few years back, and something notable and interesting also happened a few years before Aether woke up, Alice left to investigate something dangerous Lines up too well to be a coincidence Something always bugged about the abyss sibling is, why wait for 500 years. Why not try to take over Dvalin when he was poisioned Also if Lumine indeed appeared and took over the abyss, around the time Alice left, then it would mean that Dain and Lymine's world tour took place before the Cataclysm I m think this is possible because she has almost opposite opinion of the God (from her wanting to end them) while Arther thinks of them as friends

Everyone is waiting for sumeru archon quest because they want to know more about the Dendro Archon, Scaramouche, Khaenri'ah and etc. I'm waiting for sumeru archon quest because I want to see the Traveler's cool golden aura again and(probably) him using 4 elements simultaneously

I have watched so much theory videos but no one has mentioned that in Greek mythology, the three fates weave people’s destiny on a loom so

I always had the idea that aether and lumine were ounce royalty because of their clothing. If aether and lumine left their world it may have been, a way of saying their were going against the rule but it reality it was put of desperation and hope to maybe one day return and save their world. It may also explain why the abyss sibling is so motivated as the princess since maybe if the sibling can do this against Celestia maybe they can save their old home

I just wanna say that Aether may be the representative choice of Genshin in the art, but they stated both Lumine and him are the protagonists. Aether and Lumine are both the travellers and the Abbys prince/princess.

I have a problem with the currently accepted timeline... it just doesn't make sense that the Abyss Twin woke up almost immediately after being caught by the heavenly Principles. At various points it's been hinted that the Abyss Twin has been active since almost immediately after the Cataclysm. However... what if the fight between the Twins and the Heavenly Principles happened not after the disaster in Khaenri-ah, but before? That the Heavenly Principles was catching them because they had a specific role for them, with the Traveler Twin essentially taken hostage? That the horror at seeing the destruction is due to their realization they had a role in this? Their drive now to restore Khaenri-ah, a form of atonement? If the view of the destruction was indeed Starsnatch Cliff, then below, under all that destruction, was where the Traveler Twin was sealed away, so the Abyss Twin may well have thought their sibling lost in that disaster, hence wandering the world relatively directionless, until finally throwing their lot in with the Abyss order...

also the fact that zhongli voice is the first one you hear at the start of the game mean’s at least 2 thing’s 1 zhongli knows everything that will happen in teyvet before it happens or 2 it is the future zhongli and everything already happened in teyvet yet zhongli is just telling the story of what happens and we are all just experiencing it through the eyes of the traveler we choose also it means that no matter what happens zhongli survives and while we think aether and lumine are different as in gender i have a theory that they might not have a defined gender and are just based off of there looks for example the reincarnated as a slime anime rimuru despite having a male body it still could be passed off as feminine and i even think some characters in the anime get that confused and lastly zhongli voice actor being at the start of the game mean’s mihoyo at least had everything up to zhongli release already planned and that the voice actor could of been one of the first one’s hired

It's been confirmed by MiHoYo that Honkai Impact and Genshin Impact are in the same universe. The star devouring darkness is definitely the Honkai. K.K. is obviously either Kevin Kaslana or Kiana Kaslana (my bet is on Kevin because the Unknown God looks exactly like Kiana but the twins didn't recognize her, plus Kevin actually goes by K.K.). The Twins traverse the Sea of Quanta which contains bubble universes. Most likely Teyvat is one of them. Oh, and there's an official artpiece from Honkai 3rd Impact where an organization is actually watching what is happening on Teyvat. Basically Genshin is one of Honkai's Alternate Universe story events, but an entire game.

WARNING: SPOILERS Does nobody notice the similarity in the intro to wishing? when you get a character, they come out of the stars, in the form of a constellation segment, so maybe, the travellers were actually travellers sumonned by someone, because technically, when we wish, we summon characters and weapons On the other hand, if we look at many game mechanics, has anyone noticed that when you pause the screen, in co op, it doesn't pause everything? mobs can still move and hurt you, so maybe, paimon doesn't work when you go to another world, and possibly, co op, is a way of the traveller going through their own memories of their friends, but its plagued with tevyat. Considering that dainslief also has a galaxy cape, LIKE PAIMON, and a mask covering him, showing irreparable damage to that area, I can conclude that dainslief was the companion and "paimon" for the abyss sybling. Another thing to point out is their clothing, both of the twins are generally wearing clothes that could signify/show a status, so our abyss twin could possibly be true royalty, as the clothes we wear are forever, and the symbols on the clothes do not change either. Coming back to game mechanics, when you decide to change the time, instead of showing a simple clock, it shows an old clock capable of only moving 48 hours at a time, maybe, something like the bell's clock, in the description of the bell, it states that the weapon is old and its clock barely works anymore, keyword, being barely, it still means that it works to some extent, meaning that the clock in the bell, could possibly be a smaller version of the clock we see earlier. Possibly relating to the events of khaenriah and the abyss twin. Going back to dainslief being the paimon for the abyss twin, it could be that our abyss twin, created that clock, and on their adventure, people made replicas of sort, making the bell weapon with it. Another game mechanic in the time skip is how it almost always, goes up and shows the landscape, possibly indicating the traveller seeing the stars align in a way, the only place it doesn't happen, is sumeru, and as almost all of us know, sumeru, was in a samsara. Sumeru is also protected by the academia and 2 gnosises in the city, Scaramouche's gnosis & Nahida's gnosis, if this is true, it means that our time skipping ability is directly related to khaenriah, which is lessened/weakened in areas with great "celestial" power.

wait 10 years hoyo will release a character that will reveal the character that will tell travelers past.. who knows we might get a 5 second audio of the twin in a limited event

I just realised that Dainsleif's dash is very similar to Yelan's Do they use the sane magic ?

Thankfully there will be a new hoyoverse game soon called Honkai Star Rail, which I believe will have quite a few clues to the twins origins. Since your literally on a train that travels from planet to planet, so there's a chance that the characters will have at least heard about them. If the twins aren't from Project Ark, which they might not have but there's more lore to come about that, then things may have played out differently. For example their planet was destroyed however they were saved just in time, learned how to travel the galaxy and defend themselves, then left to find a new home. If we do get info about the twins through Star Rail then at most I think we'll be waiting until at least the second planet, by then we might be in Fontaine (maybe) it depends on when the game is fully released. On another note, the popular idea is that the gnostic chorus siblings are the twins. But I've been wondering if they are actually former pawns that failed to get the job done, whatever that may be.

Happy 1 year anniversary! Also I loved this video the Travelers are one of if not my favorite part of the Genshin lore and story, and I can't wait until we get more info on them. Also I don't know why, but I love it when games or movies from the same companies/producers collaborate, so I really hope Genshin is shown to be more connected to Honkai than we think.

for me i got a totally different expeculations about the traveler twins and the teyvat,. the twins are unrestrained celestial being that travels and visit worlds, make friends, memories and leave without the world sustainers preventing them to leave. it just happened to they pick a wrong world the teyvat and the sustainer prevents them from leaving, took their powers including their memories of the other world they traversed to. the purpose is when celestia and the gods destroyed khanreiah bec they are so much advanced they posed a threat to them, the teyvat soon will fall into chaos so the sustainer used the trav

I have a theory, when the heavenly principal takes one of the siblings away from the other, she places one sibling in the past, another in the present or the other way around.. That's why one of the siblings information is in the IRMIMSUL.

I remember that all the archons have ideals. (From another video of yours i think)For example Ei got corrupted by those ideals and became more of a villain to Inazuma itself (Sakoku decree and vision hunt decree). Could that happen to Abyss sibling? I am going to word this diiferently. Lumine could have been blinded by wanting to bring her homeland back whether that homeland is khanre'ah or her actual homeland. I am not too deep into the lore but this could be possible. Her goal blinded her and now she just wants it back. Wants to have her own people, have a place to rule alongside with her brother. At the end, to have her brother understand why. It seems Aether doesnt agree with them already. ''To illuminate the bright upper sky'' It doesntt make much sense to me. I tried this because Lumine's name means ''to illuminate'' and Aether's says it means bright upper sky. All names have meanings so that mean's Hoyoverse's names probably also have meanings. IT seems weird to bring this up but it could be a clue for what could happen in the future. Almost everyone in the genshin lore train knows about Scaramouche and the fake sky. ''To illuminate the bright upper sky'' is just the action of illuminating the sky. This could as well just be nothing or a reference to how they came as stars long ago. Stars illuminate the sky. Of course this is just me rambling without coming to a direct answer so anyone who reads this could percieve this their own way

I think you really need to get into the honkaiverse lore, genshin ties into it to a point where its not just theories but pretty deliberate parallels. Genshin might be another world but its still a parallel one to honkai 3rd's world.

And then, we sleep again for 500 years after the Unknown God seals the Traveler to prevent them from leaving Teyvat? I wouldn’t put too much weight on the opening cutscene. It is a story telling mechanic. The events you witness are the events as the traveler remembers them. It is possible that the traveler does not properly remember what happened and what we witness is an inaccurate or incomplete scene.

Could it be that lumine is a doppleganger of sorts? Being that all things must come to an end in teyvat. Doppleganger are born when an immortal being does not die. And instead a shadow clone takes their place, this is improbable I just thought it was an idea.
