This is a cactus one of my friends gave me. She doesn't know what kind of cactus it is. It looks like dragon fruit but much stronger, thicker and has more and bigger thorns. It surprises me by putting out flowers this year. Tonight, the flower is opening. I am going to pollinate it with dragon fruit pollen to see if it can help it to set fruit.

It's probably a type of Harrisia, maybe Harrisia jusbertii. You can actually cross pollinate it with DF pollen and vice versa.

What is the difference between acanthocereus and Harrisia? I googled both names and some of the same plant images showed up in both search.

@@xiaoli2142 The harrisia have a circular branch section and a posture more similar to columnar cacti. Acanthocereus have branches most similar to hylocereus (they are genetically closest species) and a bushy habit.

Unfortunately, the fruit did not set. Three days after the pollination, the fruit bud at the end of the flower stem was still green but now, the whole thing turned yellow and will fall off. All those pollen, the dragon fruit pollen and its own pollen did not work. So sad.
