They didn't sample that reverse bass. They invented it, they asked rubin or run DMC what would happen if they recorded the base, flipped it to get the reverse and record that. They thought beasties were crazy but it is now a staple in rap. The 80s rap scene you had to have your own style but it all sounded a bit the same. Fight for your right to party Intergalactic To many rappers Beasties are unique bc they were a punk rock band, so they could play and sometimes did play their own music. Look up beastie boys on RU-vid and just pick a song, you'll like it, guaranteed

This is their juvenile rap - joking around as frat boys - later they became much more serious of their craft and became iconic.
@MarcoSpeaksNadsat
@MarcoSpeaksNadsat 3 года назад
Juvenile is an odd word to use. Comedic maybe. If you speak to most people into 80s Hip Hop, License to Ill is a classic. The Source have it in their top 100 albums of all time. The production was raw, and stripped down. Couldn't call that juvenile. A couple of tracks were jokey, No Sleep till Brooklyn, and Girls. Others like Hold It Now Hit It, and She's Crafty are just stone cold hard-core Hip Hop classics....sampled by other rappers. The production of Paul Revere was totally original. Plus they were on Def Jam, THE label to be on. If anything, the later albums played more to the white hipsters, than underground Hip hop heads (which is why they sold more records).
@melissas4874
@melissas4874 3 года назад
@@MarcoSpeaksNadsat The word juvenile means silly or immature - kind of like what you just called "jokey". And I can't take the song "She's crafty" that seriously LOL. They have even admitted in interviews that their first album was mostly just them being silly because they were teens. Nobody is judging you for liking that since the album went platinum multiple times over so don't be so defensive.
@MarcoSpeaksNadsat
@MarcoSpeaksNadsat 3 года назад
@@melissas4874 I don't know anyone from back in the day who analysed lyrics of Hip Hop tracks . Me and my peeps didn't in 1986. 95% of it were good time rhymes. Schooly D brought in Gangsta Rap, and conscious/political rap didn't really start with any importance until BDP and Public Enemy (2nd album). The Beastie Boys just conformed to that. People were nodding their heads to the beats and production, not breaking down and analysing the lyrics.
@melissas4874
@melissas4874 3 года назад
@@MarcoSpeaksNadsat You have to analyze lyrics to tell when they are silly? I guess if they are in latin you might? English is my first language so it takes no analysis. The Beastie Boys themselves said their first album was silly. You are moving goal posts to beats etc now. You said some of their songs were comical - beats are comical? Or did you reach that deduction by "analysing the lyrics"? Or maybe you just need to get over yourself and quit getting so emo over some comments about music you didn't have any part in creating.

If anyone in the younger generations coming up wonder why our generation (Gen X or older) wax nostalgic about our music etc, it’s because this is what we grew up with. Mind blowing unique originality, passion, hard work with real instruments and beats, self expression, artistic expression without an agenda. It’s beautiful. Soul has been lost in today’s “art”. Every single hip hop artist owes a debt and inspiration to and from the Beastie Boys. They not only brought Hip Hop to the masses, but they brought their own unique style and flow. They changed the landscape of hip hop and mainstream culture. Their second full album Paul's Boutique has only grown in legend, with every major hip hop artist citing it as Hip Hop Bible. From Chuck D to Questlove and beyond, their influence is deeply ingrained. They were already legendary before 1990, and before Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty
@5x7m

Beastie Boys are groundbreaking but Hip-hop/Rap had already reached the masses before them. Hip hop artists/Rappers should pay homage to the culture originators.
@MBeano
@MBeano 3 года назад
@@5x7m Sugarhill Gang broke through with 1 song in 1979, Rapper's Delight, which is legendary. However it didn't get past 36 on Billboard Hot 100, and the album didn't generate much else in terms of popularity or reaching the masses. License to Ill was the first hip hop album reach #1. It had multiple hit singles which got heavy play on radio and MTV. When "reaching the masses" is concerned, this refers to ubiquity and place within the popular landscape, that goes beyond major cities like NY and LA, but reaches the hearts of minds of those even in the midwest. It was Run DMC and Beastie Boys who really broke through in 86 & 87. Part of this was the extensive touring. Beastie Boys opened for Madonna, went on Tour with Run DMC, then headlined their own tour. Altogether that brought them to massive audiences, but also to people and places they may not have reached, however badly they were received by Madonna's mostly pop mainstream audience at the time. djrobblog.com/archives/293 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walk_This_Way#Charts en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beastie_Boys This is not to say that Beastie Boys were the first in hiphop. Sugarhill Gang was already mentioned, Fab 5 Freddy, and Grandmaster Flash along with others who I didn't know of at the time like OG DJ Kool

@MBeano
@MBeano 3 года назад
@@lttfan9185 I am talking about reaching the masses, not influence (that is a separate topic). See comment and links above. Hip-hop's reach was not prevalent or pervasive at the time. There were only sprinkles of it. Hitting the masses means going far beyond that. Other than the already mentioned Run DMC and Beastie Boys, who were back to back and both on Def Jam, what Hip Hop artist rose to the level of reaching the masses before they did - This means Top 40 radio, being known to people outside the Hip Hop community, people outside of youth culture knowing your name, the news, being heard everywhere (radio, tv, stores, and other public places). Sugar Hill Gang were essentially 1 hit wonders as far as commercial success is concerned, they had 1 other song that gained some play but not much. Also, people knew the song, few knew the band that wrote, and almost no one could name a member. Grandmaster Flash or Afrika Bambaataa never had a top 40 or Billboard 100 hit. The Message, White Lines, and World Destruction were the closest they came. Bambaataa's Planet Rock album is highly influential but was not a major hit. Public Enemy, NWA came directly after. LL Cool J all came with a hit album Radio in 85. He could barely get signed previously, and eventually signed to Def Jam because of the Beastie Boys played Rick Rubin his demo, as told by LL himself. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A3B1iyVLOuk.html

In 1991 Nirvana broke through and had HUGE success and impact with their lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit", from the album Nevermind. It changed everything in Rock. Radiostaions changed formats, Record labels started signing bands they thought were similar. etc etc. "Alternative" had hit the big time. It was everywhere and ubiquitous. Kids in sububurgs and small towns were playing all the new (and not so new ) Alternative albums and singles. Yet, "Nevermind" was not the first "Alternative" album. There were plenty of good and even some groundbreaking album that came prior to that album and that were minor hits. Pixies, Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jesus and Mary Chain, NIN and even Pearl Jam's Ten all released albums prior to Nevermind, which had success. But it was Nevermind that exploded Alternative music into the mainstream and masses, even giving a spotlight to the Grunge subgenera. This is similar to the Beastie Boys. At that time all the aforementioned bands had gold albums which were quite good/great, but they didn't change the landscape, bring the spotlight, open the door for the masses to come into the Alternative house. Your suburban kid in Kansas was not rocking out to Jane's Addiction, Jesus & Mary Chain or Faith No More, or wearing their Tshirts. More likely than not, they were most likely wearing Boston, Hair Metal, or Rush, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith or Tom Perry. Alternative was fringe until Nirvana. A similar situation played out with Hip Hop and Beastie Boys/Run DMC

Actually, "Bust A Move" uses a noise gate (a kind of audio effects processor) to chop off the reverb of the drums (808) to give them that short, punchy sound - it isn't backwards like in Paul Revere. But the best thing about Bust A Move is the Flea (from Red Hot Chili Peppers) bass line.
