You made it happen Justine! I'm a long time user of GoPro cams and have the same issues with audio. They'll fix it eventually. I'm off to go check out the Sony RX0 now...Thanks!
I gave up on GoPro audio awhile back, I still use the Hero4 and use the SHILL microphone LAV for gopro, which works well. For audio interviews and vlogging, I use the Tascam DR10c and then just sync it up in post. Saves all the problems.
Daniel Cifuentes It is definitely not SGC - 698, while it looks absolutely the same, the major difference is that SGC-698 does not have a detachable 3.5mm cord nor does it have such a long spring cable
i feel you justine..i feel you...i'm trying to make things work with my gopro, and it just want to dump me. audio is the #1 complain on my vlogs....but i gotta say justine, the sunglas you have on the beach...love it!
You are right! But upgrading with all this additional stuff it is not the same small and useful setup... I use my SD Audio Recorder for good audio.... Its the same price but very useful if you like to have a second Audio Source for all your cameras....
i was actually thinking of getting a gopro or the Sony rx0. i only have a dslr for the videos i make now but it stops me from doing more action and water type shots where i simply could not take any dslr or point and shoot. i don't really know though because one thing i care a lot about for my youtube videos is quality and i feel like gopro footage isn't the best. thoughts??
You are basically talking about my every day struggle! I use a GoPro, basically exclusively for my videos, and as much as I love it, I am forever trying to fix the audio! I'm definitely not using it for action shots, I just need it to be a good, everyday camera. Which it is, aside from the sub-par audio. I really hope that GoPro takes some of your suggestions to heart in the future, because I need the portability of the tiny camera, and at the moment, the rx0 is too expensive. I may have to start saving up for your setup, because aside from adding some bulk, it still looks like it would be more portable than most other bigger cameras. Thanks for the suggestions!
Underwater-ish audio from the basic Go Pro. Your contraption has a good sound, pretty clear. I had a good laugh with this video. Thank you for sharing Justine.
So to make a long story short, just buy a Sony RX0. LOL. GoPro just sent Jon Olsson a Hero 6 with the whole proper setup that you tried to do here BTW.
+iJustine, they sent him the new shorty stick and a Rode mic, and what looks like the same cage you have and of course that awful mic adapter, that needs to go. LOL. I forgot that it makes it not waterproof, which is crap if you know are using your WATERPROOF camera to vlog when it's wet out. Nice job GoPro. smh
I tried that set up on the GoPro 5 and it worked good for awhile then the GoPro adapter got worn I guess and it would vibrate lose but u couldn’t tell it had and I would get ready to edit my movie and have no audio. Very disappointing. I’ve not understood why GoPro hasn’t made a set up for vlogers. You video is spot on.
My GoPro hero 5 and 1st gen. GoPro hero session have excellent audio. Especially while I was up north in Michigan this past summer. But, I just use it naked. I don’t put any housings on them unless I need a mount or something along those lines.
After I watched your first GoPro Hero 6 video I almost went and bought one just to check out the imagine stabilization. Thanks for calling it like it is. I think I will hold off now or check out the Rx0.
Feels like the issue with the go pro mic is that most of the low end and high end is being filtered out , making it sound too boxy , I feel the reason go pro did that was to omit wind noise , however the reason why ur shot gun mic works really well is because it has a wider spectrum of sound frequency , you will get clarity but ,the wind noise and other artefacts will also get captured , so additional costs like a wind filter will also be required . How about connecting a zoom hn4 via a mount , it may be bulky but , you will get a better stereo width and better dynamic sound .
Justine, this is the first time I watched one of your videos. You are amazing! Fantastic video - spot on with your criticism of GoPro. This has been driving me and many others mad. (See all the other videos on this topic on RU-vid, GoPro, and try listening to your customers!j But my comment is to tell you what a great presence and fun style you have in front of the camera. High entertainment value!
I didn't notice any problem with any audio except at the site your referred to as "the beach" there was background most likely from things like the ocean and wind.I noticed a videos problem also that there was a dimming in one segment with a video from one of the cameras. It was most likely because there was not a abundance of natural lighting. Are there any filters that can be purchase with the microphones you use?
My GoPro Hero 5 internal microphones are fantastic. I have no problem really compared to yours. Your sounds almost as if it is in a old waterproof housing used on older gen GoPros. I’d recommend getting rid of that metal housing your using rn on it and use the GoPro branded skeleton one👍
Totally agree, the audio adapter sucks! We need a cage with a second cold shoe for a light, and hopefully the hero 8 will have 4k in linear mode, and a much higher bitrate.
Great vid Jus😉 I think that right now there're a lot of better option to the gopro. Gopro have this perception of coolness, you know like Beats that you know that Sennheiser are better but aren't as cool as the Beats
Well I’m a believer for that Sony camera, I’ve always wanted a GoPro but if Sony can do something like that with better audio why not less to carry, for my iPhone I use a Shure MV88 give that a look
Having been suckered into a Black 7, I am so sorry I didn't watch this first... Going to gift (loosely applied) the Black 7 to some unsuspecting family member and getting the Sony RX0... THank you for your info
Thanks Justine, I’ve been really struggling with deciding which first GoPro to settle with. Audio is a big thing but image stabilization is also great...ugh..I can’t decide lol
2 tips for sound box placement. The first is velcro the box 2 the bottom, and the second is a download of a 3d printer app the has a space built in for the box and extra battery.
Well done video!!! And, yeah... you've definitely got pretty hair. Anyway... have you considered a product analysis of the Hooke Verse 3D microphone for the Hero 7 Black? There's not that much info on the binaural mics. I am new to GoPro and still trying to make a mic decision.
SO... they should make a waterprof case with the usb c connector/converter built-in, with a jack input on the top + mounting support on top for mic and bottom for tripod or whatever.
The external microphone makes a huge difference in sound quality but you can't use the external microphone with the GoPro Karma Grip. I made a huge mistake buying everything GoPro. Karma Grip and Karma drone batteries discharge when not being used. This is why their company is not doing well.
When you unplugged the GP mic adapter to test, was the GP still in the casing - ie the case covering the mic's? Also thought you might be interested - I've been working on GP with unpowered mic's like the rode videomicro mic (love the mic!!) and the adapter - an the problem with it is that the gopro doesn't always detect the mic is there in time, so it doesn't power the adapters preamps. many people say theres no sound recorded, where it's there - just at -35/-40 db. So useless... Made a couple of vlogs about it.
Thanks Justine for this one, I have tried several ideas on the GoPro and I'd say yours will not work on my gimble setup, but at least you tried. I have an idea that might solve the issues, but it will end up on my channel in the future and cost far less. OR...I have counted over 10 ways how NOT to do it LOLOL.. :)
Justine Absolutely awesome review was wondering how you guys made this all come together and definitely enjoyed Thanks so much as this definitely answered many questions you also have to improvise allot but can't thank you enough.Again very much enjoyed Deb ✌👍P.S.Love your Work.....😎
From a price to performance stand point, the RX0 seems to be the winner, Gopro is making is very difficult to providing a flexible platform for other industries other than action sports. The RX0 seems to be the proper way to go as it is geared to the content creator as well as the action user.
