Åland wasnt " occupied " by Sweden, for several hundred years Åland had already been inhabited by norse (swedish) peoples. There is even evidence they took place in viking raids on eastern countries.

@masalli

Yes. You are right. If Åland joins to Sweden it would lose most of its special privileges. If Finland state sells its property (state company or stocks for example) Åland will have part of the money. When Åland sells its property or collects taxes, Åland can keep all of the money itself because of autonomy. Åland have 16 counties. In continental Finland there is no as small counties as Åland have and Swedish counties are even bigger as Finnish ones. If Åland joins to Sweden it might lose its right of domicile, it might lose special language rights (Sweden is multicultural nation nowadays), and it will definitely lose money from Finland state sales and it should combine its counties and pay taxes to Sweden. And how about demilitarisation? Åland have special fishing and hunting privileges too. If current autonomy privileges prevail, Åland will be part of Finland now and in future.

There are a lot of comments about Åland 'rejoining' Sweden and most people from Åland are commenting that the people there show no wish to be part of Sweden. I have some friends there so I already knew that was the case. I will just add something which is not mentioned in the video. Finland is officially a bilingual country with both Finnish and Swedish as official languages. Although over 90% of the population has Finnish as the first language there are Swedish speaking communities all along the west coast and around Helsinki. All kids study Swedish in school. So being Swedish speaking does not make the Åland islands a unique part of Finland and is not something that would stop someone feeling Finnish. The Swedish spoken there is a lot closer in pronunciation to 'mainland' Swedish than the very distinctive accent of Finland-Swedes though. It IS unique in that it is totally Swedish speaking rather than majority Swedish speaking. Secondly, Finland is a country anyone could be proud to be citizen of. Thirdly, I can't help feeling that by joining Sweden, Åland would just be swallowed up and become an ordinary part of Sweden without any special autonomy, which it has as part of Finland.

Totally agree! I would also add that Sweden really doesnt want Åland to be part of Sweden anymore. They would not be able to give the same kind of autonomy to Åland as it has now under Finnish goverment simply because there are other areas in Sweden that would immediately start to demand autonomy status too (Skåne and jämtland mainly.) Things change over time!

My great grandfather immigrated from Mariehamn, Aland to the United States in 1911. Like many Americans, I recently had my ancestry done, and to my surprise the person who did the research, told me that I was Finnish, not Swedish. Imagine my surprise, when I had to tell family members, those that are still living, that after all these years, we are not Swedish? I was disappointed, I thought Sweden had a richer past. I still consider myself Swedish, because he spoke Swedish. Imagine, this information was not passed down? My father and one of his brothers is gone, so I couldn’t ask them. My great grandfathers wife, my great grandmother was from the mainland of Finland, so I consider myself both Swedish and Finnish.

Well, it's a bit complicated. Åland was associated with Sweden and Swedes since the middle ages, so was the entity of "Finland" which was not a colony of some sort, but just the eastern half of Sweden Proper. So Finland and Sweden was one country for many hundred of years with both Finns and Swedes going both ways over the sea and settling. So the modern political definitions/border/Nationalities for Ålanders and Finns is a fairly new phenomenon if you look at the whole history of Sweden-Finland. So do with that what you will ;d

Sweden has occupied neither Finland nor Åland in the sense of occupying a sovereign nation. Many Finns and foreigners get this wrong. Swedes just started to move over seas to Finland where there were more room to settle. There were some Finnish tribes but they were not United and fought between each other and mostly just integrated with the Swedes who came over. Finland became a part of Sweden through a quite peaceful process of integrating with the settlers, not by the sword.

Well well, difficult with Åland innit... Corrections: Åland and Finland were never annected or similar by SWE; we were THE SAME country. Then about domicility: It's perfectly OK for a Swede or indeed a Finn to purchase property in Åland as long as the property: - is situated on, by town or other municipality, "planned area" - isn't larger than about one acre (4,000 m2 I take it) - isn't situated by the sea The EU saw to that. In addition, exemption from bullits above are more or less rule today for houses owned through stocks - which covers the majority of all property today on the island. But if 'NoGo' above you need the sv. 'hembyggdsrätt', which indeed is a story by its own.

I've always been for Åland to be ruled under Swedes, I mean as a Finn Åland feel as a part of Sweden. If I went further than the port, I would be regarded as a foreign man 'cause I don't speak Swedish even though in paper I'm still "in Finland" so to speak. There's just so damn much geopolitical stuff that it would require that it's just practically impossibility. Even when Norway wanted to give us Finns a 100th year anniversary gift on our independence by giving us a few square meters of land at the mountain of Salla, just so we'd have the highest peak of the mountain it simply couldn't be done for those same geopolitical reasons.

The real reason why åland really stayed with FInland is because we actually bothered defending them in the second world war

Åland stayed with Finland because the League of Nations decided it. What was Sweden to do, launch an offensive against Finland, who had been one and the same country for 800 years? In the second world war, Åland didn't need to be defended, as it was never attacked. Sweden did, however, provide enormous amounts of support to Finland, in food, clothes, and huge amounts of it's military. More specifically, Sweden gave away: 135,402 rifles, 347 machine guns, and 450 light machine guns with 50,013,300 rounds of small arms ammunition 144 field guns, 100 anti-aircraft guns and 92 anti-tank guns with 301,846 shells 300 naval mines and 500 depth charges, 17 fighter aircraft, five light bombers, one DC-2 transport aircraft turned into a bomber, and three reconnaissance aircraft to Finland. Protecting the brother nation and the Swedish diaspora in Finland was something Sweden took very seriously, so even daring to say something like what you did is honestly shameful. Millions upon millions of dollars were poured into Finland. Thousands of volunteers fought the Soviets. Honour their sacrifice.

I have few questons for people living in Åland: Do you guys think you are more swedish or finnish? And if you watch sport, like ice hockey, Do you cheer Sweden or Finland, or both? And the last one, if you could choose, do you want belong to sweden, or Finland? Would be nice if you answer
@kastelholm
@kastelholm 5 лет назад
The genuine Ålanders don't don't consider themselves to be Finns. Neither to be Swedes. To be just Ålanders is good enough. We don't need to be anything else. But when it comes to sports, and particularly hockey, then the Ålanders are VERY FINNISH. Nothing feels better for most Ålanders than beating Sweden in hockey!

@@grebo8382 Åland is not "owned" by Finland, it is part of Finland. Åland has always been part of Finland/Eastern part of Sweden - never part of Western/modern Sweden.
