My daughter and I both have this condition. Every year from ages 17-21, by daughter would need to be hospitalized for ten days to receive IV steroids. The last time, her colon was so inflamed, her gastroenterologist wanted to remove her entire colon. Having tried the SCD diet and being somewhat familiar with mold, I decided to take her to a functional medicine doctor at The Cleveland Clinic. Turns out, Audrey had over 20 times the amount of mold. We bought an infrared sauna, put her on the GAPS diet, eating only cooked veggies, prescription and natural binders and she also took VSL #3 as probiotics. She had a TON for 16 weeks to start off. She didn’t eat a thing during this time! It took her two years to totally heal. Two weeks ago (May 2021), at the age of 26, she graduated with a double major in marketing and accounting and still has her colon. She eats lots of meat!
@Brenda I wish I saw this 11+ years ago!! They got me, so today I live with a Jpouch and physically feel it. I felt better with colitis but bc I was hospitalized for a months and nothing working.. it was take chemo drugs or remove the whole thing. If that were today, none of this would have happened. God bless your daughter, she has a great mom 📣 advocate!!!!💗
@@Pam_HRL It is so hard to know. I didn't even know mold is a thing you could have in your body let alone test. I hope life does get easier with the jpouch.
@@tutoringbyesther8467 neither did I. My issue was that doctors could not get my inflammation under control. I believe it was due to lime disease. I got bit by a tick a year before and even though I caught it right away and treated it, it still attacked what was most vulnerable which in my case was my colon. Thank you, life isn’t bad, it’s just this type of surgery “for me” wasn’t forgiving. Many ppl feel like they’ve gotten their lives back w surgery. Keeping busy & staying positive helps😉
I have UC and went keto 16 months ago . Got off all my medication and have been fine since . I even have a cheat day once a week now with no symptoms . I don’t do raw veggies , only cooked soluble fibre . I also had a candida overgrowth and sibo as many people with digestive conditions do . I took a product called candi gone for 2 weeks while doing keto and killed the candida and bacteria off . I then started healing my gut up doing keto and adding things like colostrum and L glutamine to patch up my leaky gut . I took these things on an empty stomach every morning for a month . Now like I said I just eat keto 6 days a week and 1 day where I eat anything but it took time to get to this stage . If you have IBD or ibs you want to do strict keto or even carnivore for a few months before you try a cheat day . This condition is awful but it is curable trust me . Low carb eating is the absolute cure for almost all autoimmune illnesses
Totally agree. I was diagnosed UC 20 years ago. One of the most importants things is not to do cheating days for a long period of time until the gut can handle it.
They sounds awesome good for you! I wonder if that works for chrons... I have tried many many things including zinc, vit D, magnesium, DGL u name it. But I haven't tried colostrum and l glutamine.
@@fussman7199 it will work ! You have to eat a certain way though while healing your gut . Low carb is what worked for me and most people with ibd . The colostrum and l glutamine work to patch up your gut .
When your doctor's tell you it's incurable..... Don't lose your hope especially young people... Autoimmune conditions are curable... It is a long journey... Sometimes very very hard both mind and body hard... But it's worth it... YOU CAN GET YOUR LIFE BACK
It's really something that ruined my entire life I got uc when I was just 13 And now I'm 16 And still it doesn't cured I lost all the hopes😢 My childhood ruined But then decided to try again And still doing
This makes a lot of sense. I had UC and had to go to the hospital for a severe case of bleeding colon. In the hospital, the doctor put me on IV and gave me antibiotics. They said this would be a recurring problem as my family has a history of colon problems. Afterwards, I cut down on spicy food and tried to eat more healthy, but the problem never truly went away. As listed on this video, I had all the symptoms of UC. Recently, I started the Keto diet because I noticed that I was consistently gaining weight though I was trying to eat healthy. Previously, my diet contained lots of carbs in the form of pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes. It was ingrained in me to eat lots of carbs for energy, though I always seemed to be fatigued. Anyways, I started the Keto diet to lose weight by cutting out all sugars and carbs. Also, due to covid, I started taking regular vitamin D, vitamin C (recently discontinued), and vitamin K. I also put butter in my morning coffee and ate lots of eggs and red meats for my dinner. I also totally cut out lunches. So, effectively I'm down to a morning coffee and one meal a day. Immediately, I noticed that my hunger went away and I had clarity of mind. I also had consistent energy throughout the day to my surprise. But most importantly, my stool was greatly reduced and my colon has been healing ever since. No more swelling and no more bleeding. This is such an incredible turn of events as it has been a constant problem for the past 8 years. I'm now entirely convinced that my colon issues was a direct result of eating carbs and sugars for so many years that my body built up insulin resistance. Although this video didn't convince me to change my diet, it sure explains a lot in hindsight. Dr. Berg, thank you so much for your treasure trove of information and data. It's nice to see someone actually refer to the journal articles on the subject.
Im so proud of Dr. Berg!...his channel & brand is exceptionally growing. I remember when I started he was barely at a million. Now he's about to breach 4M, has his own Merchandise, books, Supplements and now Call Center...but most importantly Respect & Trust of millions of Followers. Thank you, Dr. Berg!🙏
I'm so sick and so scared. I live in LA and need help bad. I've been suffering for so many years! I need a holistic doctor like you. I'm on so many intense medications!
thank you, omg my UC flared up two weeks ago and I'm wrecked. No surgery no steroids. I need my life back. those who know know. go to the bathroom stand up and go to the bathroom again. its unreal.
I had UC many years ago. Had it for over 12 yrs. finally had surgery. I am doing well. Wish we were taught these great tips back then, as no one offered me diet and supplement advise. Keep up the good work Dr Berg I watch every day and learn so much!
I was just told by my Dr. that I will have to get surgery. Mines is at the connection point of the small and large intestine. I'm having a hard time on accepting that..
@@keem912ify I was diagnosed with UC over twenty years ago. The Dr.'s told me I would have to get surgery AND take medication daily, no mention of diet whatsoever. In my heart I knew there was another way and I thought, F- that! I did take some prednisone (steroids) for a short amount of time to reduce the inflammation but also went online to do my own research. I found that everyone who took the meds and had surgery often developed worse problems and had to have more surgery. SO I just changed my diet and nothing terrible ever happened to me (as the Dr.'s warned). Do try the fasting and dietary measures first. You can always have the surgery later if need be, but you can never undo the damage surgery causes to one's whole body system.
@@keem912ify just cut out the sugars and carbs they do a lot of damage take vitamins and supplements eat healthy once a day and get enough sunand sleep,,,
I just found out that my brother has this condition. I'm sending him this video immediately and will definitely follow up with a phone call tonight. YAH Bless you.
Yay! Looks like Dr berg is getting closer and closer to making a video(s) about how a colectomy/ileostomy affects the body and what one can do to address the potential issues that arise! Yay! Keep going Dr berg! There are lots of people who want this video! 🎉 ☺
Yes, I had severe Ulcerative Colitis for 10 years that ended with a Total Colectomy with J-Pouch surgery 28 years ago. Constant dehydration and it’s long term effects on my body is something that I would like to understand better. My overall health is remarkably good. I’ve been on OMAD Healthy Keto for almost 3 years and it’s the best diet/ lifestyle I’ve found. I also avoid plant lectins, nightshades as well as gluten.
I second that request. I had total colectomy 20 odd years ago and feel healthy with my ileoanal pouch but I'm am eating little.and often so can't really fast and I wonder what words of wisdom would Sr Berg offer to maximise my health
I have an ileostomy due to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. It's caused issues such as prolapses, blockages, and hernias. Figuring out what to eat has been tough due to issues with fiber. But my concern is what happens when the hepatic portal vein is cauterized during surgery? This is a major vein for getting rid of excess hormones, toxins, nutrients, etc thag the liver doesn't need. If I'm not mistaken, this dumps into the colon for elimination, but if we don't have a colon, and if the vein is cauterized, what happens? How does this then impact other body systems and what can be done? Also, any important things people without colons and/or with ileostomies needs to know? It would be amazing if Dr berg did series of videos similarly to the library he's created for those without gallbladders.
lambentseed I had the same when I was 30 I am now about to be 54. Surprisingly healthy. Too but yes dehydration and bloating sounds bad at times. Pouchitis and used to take Flagyl but became allergic and Cipro I am allergic so there is nothing else. Started making DoTerra capsules with oregano oil and other things to kill of bad bacteria. But I know I could be way healthier. I really need a consult.
I started my weight loss journey with potatoe diet and intermittent fasting (FOR TWO MONTHS), lost significant weight before switching to KETO, which hugely reduced my body fat percentage and weight as well. While on POTATO DIET, I noticed that the ulcer pains and discomfort completely disappeared. This healing process has improved even while on KETO diet. I eat once a day with no ulcer pain and discomfort. I hope this healing remains permanent because I've suffered from this bad condition for more than ten years.
I'm also thinking of doing the potato diet. I got this idea from a book called the starch solution by a doc. My main goal is to lose weight (I'm 30 pounds overweight), but have been recently diagnosed with colitis. I've had many bad flare ups and I'm thinking maybe this diet could help. Can you tell me how you prepared your potatoes?
Thank you Dr. Berg. I've been doing intermittent fasting and keto for 2 weeks and noticed that my mood is uplifted the longer I go on an empty stomach. But I cheated a few times with high carb snacks and then felt like crap. I gotta stay consistent to feel good and not go to the bathroom all the time. I heard inflammation is linked to depression but on an empty stomach I feel good. Thanks for that :)
Hey Dr., Want to put something in front of you. Recently I found that I'm having chronic IBD or ulcerative colitis since childhood. Many years back, I was very regular doing aerobics (around 6 yrs.). My symptoms disappeared in 3 or 3.5 months and returned back after 7 years when I completely stopped exercising. I think exercise works like a magic for people like me.
Best zinc for gut : The short answer is that zinc carnosine is the best available form of zinc for digestive health according to the current research. As you’ve alluded to, there are many different forms of zinc. Zinc carnosine (ZnC) differs in that the carnosine portion is comprised of the amino acids beta-alanine and histidine.
I just heald myself using many things and two of them I got from your website. Yesterday and this morning was my first solid stoll in six months. I'll update this when I get out of work to give details. Your going straight to heaven man!
Patients with ulcerative colitis usually present with diarrhea, which may be associated with blood. Bowel movements are frequent and small in volume as a result of rectal inflammation. Associated symptoms include colicky abdominal pain, urgency, tenesmus, and incontinence👍
Appreciate Dr.Bergs advice He will likely suggest fixing leaky gut, a keto modified diet, probiotics , and I'm not sure of vits & mins protocol, avoid dairy and fried foods, carbs, alcohol huge culprit and definitely steam your veggies . Stress management or reduction is key. Looking forward to Dr. BERSG's complete UC & IBS protocol Thx kindly
I just want to mention anyone with this condition me and my friend found out we both have it. And Dr berg has always helped me enormously over the years. But one thing he doesnt mention which we both found was that for us cutting out fat was the answer as our colon as attacking the fat. So please do try that as i know people go on keto diets but if u have this exact condition try cutting out your fat or lower it a lot and see what happens.
My husband and I went on the keto diet a couple years ago for about five months and it completely healed my husbands colitis! Unfortunately he couldn’t stay on keto because his cholesterol went sky high but I know it helped his inflammation, and even though he hasn’t been on keto diet for awhile he hasn’t had a flare up. He is still eating lower carb.
Beede Bawng lol well for him it means he’s eating fruits and vegetables, carrots, potatoes but staying away from processed carbs like baking and sweets etc.
Again, a awesome clip for UC patients. I have UC since 2010 and this probiotics works awesome. There is nothing like sitting out in sunlight, gives you Vitamin D plus, calm you down, great for anxiety and mental health.
I'd add chicken bone broth it's a life saver during fasting for UC flare. It gives you something hot and flavorful if you make your own, and gives you some nourishment during a flare. A cup contains about 10grams protein, it has other things in it that are good for healing your gut.

In a day on day off type fashion. She has no steroids now and only 1 balsalazide pill daily for her UC. And hasn’t had an accident w that in years. I added every supplement you suggested zinc etc
Not sure if you see these messages long after you've done the video! I have had UC for 20 + years, been to gastrologist's and they only want to put u on drugs, which I hate taking! So I've been researching and researching for years and just found your channel not long ago. U make 100% more sense than all the doctors I've gone too, which is a relief! My UC has made me anemic, given me blood clots, lowered my red blood cells, etc..... and that's been a few years back! Now, to date, I still run and forth to the bathroom 30-40 times in a 24 hr. period and it sucks lol I hear u talk about getting on a carnivore diet for about 2 months but how do you get the nutrients that u usually get from your vegetables? Thank you so much for your expansive knowledge of the body!!!! If u do see this and answer, as I can tell you're a very very busy person but I will check back periodically just in case! Thanks again!!!
Think you for this information for I did take the cabbage juice for 96 days and my colon no longer burns on the left side. I went to the hospital and had the doctor to do CAT scan, and bloodwork. They even shot the Die down in my veins, And still did not find nothing wrong with me.
Could u please please just please do a series of videos covering IBS, it's difference from IBD, It's treatments, Why there isn't a cure for it, How to go into remission of IBS, just all aspects of IBS because SO many people go through this awful condition and have no answers from anyone. That can be doctors or gastroenterologists or anyone there's no one who gives us information apart from google and i trust u more than google
IBS can be treated with the low FODMAP diet and through stress management. Identifying what foods trigger your symptoms and avoiding them is helpful as noone is the same.
Thank u Dr. Berg! I really treasure ur advice 👍 I know of an older friend who has issues with her gut and had to stay overnight at the hospital recently. Although I’ve mentioned to her some of ur suggestions, her being of a strong Hispanic background, it’s very difficult for her to give up her diet she has lived with all her life

FYI: just shopping for VSL3 probiotic you recommend & found in the Amazon comment section many customers saying that VSL3 changed their formula a bit to be dairy free after moving to Italy and that it doesn't work as well as the original product. They instead use Visbiome (with trace amount of dairy) which is same as original formula & made by same inventor in USA who switched companies.
Please emphasise the importance of drinking at least 2 litres of water / unsweetened fluids especially during fasting. Most medical practitioners assume people just drink water. You’d be amazed how many people avoid drinking water.
Dr. Berg, I'm so confused about the intermittent fasting and eating meat. I've had UC for over 10 years and have been trying to keep myself in remission ever since. I took steroids for just a short time and realized I did not want to be on medication for the rest of my life. So, my most recent flare up, I did the AIP diet. I cut out all grains and sugar. It did not do much, but I lost 20 lbs. Now, I came across other doctors saying that animal fats and meat is too hard to digest for people who have UC. That peaked my interest and I cut out meat for about 5 days. I started feeling better. Didn't cramp or bleed. Then I had meat (salmon in this case) and the next day I felt so sick and was cramping and bleeding. So, I cut out all meat and went vegan. In hardly any time I went into remission. I have stayed in remission and now only eat meat a little bit. So how is Keto supposed to help? Also on IF, people with UC can't consume so much food to fit in an 8 hour period. We have to eat smaller meals more often in the day and spread them out, not eating in between to let the digestive system rest. So, how is one supposed to IF if we can't squeeze so much food and eating in just an 8 hour window?
No offense you sound like a doctor at a hospital who knows nothing about this…. No offense literally everything you've said is the complete opposite of what you need to do to get rid of this completely, not this whole remission nonsense.....
@@JohnAdams-mu7xd you sound like you know what you’re talking about if you’re telling me I don’t, so what am I supposed to do? Maybe you can tell me! How does one get rid of Ulcerative Colitis for good??? Last I checked you can’t.

@@MrPaulorange sorry to hear! I’ve been able to stay in remission. Really have to learn my body and just like you said, do what works for me! So far so good!
Thank you for this video. So refreshing to hear you talk about supplements and diet. I've had UC for 24 years. Doctors told me diet had nothing to do with it, I have found this not to be true. After first flare up, I became lactose intolerant, and while I was in hospital a nurse recommended that I avoid dairy also. I was also found to have too much Mercury in my system from fillings, which I was told would make UC worse. I take chlorella to help with that. I also found soya lecithin was helpful. A herbalist told me do gluten free also, for any autoimmune disease. I am interested to try the fasting and low carbon and zinc and vit d, I've studied this for 24 years and had not read that info anywhere. Much gratitude to you 🙂🥰
Much appreciated the video Dr Berg together with the useful recommendations.... ☺ Have been taking wheat grass powder a while prior to seeing the video and will look into the intermittent fasting, etc., As a UC sufferer and when a flare happens, seems to me one goes into a repetitive cycle of misery insofar that the disease often "hit's" by way of a multi-pronged aspect. So, because of these 'variables' and coupled with the individual 'emotional factor', one can end up looking for 'ghosts that don't exist' simply by way of trying to fathom-out 'why'. ... ☹ Unfortunately, such is the complexity and mystery surrounding this disease, which effects so many UC sufferers on different levels. ... But with videos like this it's great to know there are non-prescription measures one can employ with a view to some healing.
Guide from the 70s Soviet Union says raw gabbage juice or raw potato juice are the best remedies for stomach and colon inflammations. Nice to see gabbage-hero here again!
I'm not a doctor, but my husband is 25 years past his UC diagnosis. Each person is going to react differently to foods so first listen to your body. Start with reducing sugars with the goal of eliminating it. A good diet plan is a Candia cleanse (at least amonth after diet change add in a Candida cleanse supplement). Switch over slow! Your body is already stressed and your organs are not working properly. A fast change will make you sick! Take a month to fully implement the elimination of sugars, pop, breads, pasta, etc. And never ingest vegetable/canola oil again!! No fried food!!! Replace with olive oil and lard. Increase foods which are as close to natural and fresh as possible. Veggies, meat, a little fruit (in that order) is your new diet. Get your body used to it over the month so it can have the proper enzymes for digestion (enzyme supplements are worth trying too). The supplements we found most helpful: Marshmallow root Slippery elm Serapeptase Saccharomyces boulardii Prenatal vitamin with iodine Probiotics - rotate stains to reduce over population Listen to your body! Introduce things one at a time a week apart. Anything you react to stop taking. Search Dr's Eric Berg, Ken Berry, Sten Echberg, and Josh Axe RU-vid channels and websites. Watch and read everything they have posted. There are a lot more things to try, I've listed the main ones which work for my husband. God bless your health!!!

First thank you so much for opening a new horizon for UC patients, caught up in a circle of medical treatments that never ends. What I loved more is that you avoided to mention such a negative word as chronic . So please ,is there a comprehensive natural treatment for UC?
Chicken or any other bone broth should be on this list as well. It has so many nutrients in it and it helps heal the lining of your GI track. When I initially got diagnosed I ate this to break a 5 day fast and the next day my symptoms were cut in half. Also, caster oil packs will help get blood to flow into the area and heal the sores/ulcers. Along with what Dr. Berg has here I think this condition is definitely curable. Keto/Carnivore and take the right stuff to reduce inflammation.

I found through my studies on this is that if you get rid of all GMO, and whole grains, is it goes away. It is very expensive to treat medically, it is better to juice, and do as I stated.
Also, watch after on set and clearing up for appendix inflammation. Usually within three years. Probiotics are very helpful. If you can figure the onset on this, it is usually celiac or lactose intolerance that brings it full fledge, could possibly be other food allergies, which is why I believe this to be brought on by vaccines.
3 years ago I was diagnosed with UC. I believe I was misdiagnosed & I had some kind of infection that was causing the inflammation & the rectal bleeding. I didn't have any abdominal pain. The doctor prescribed Mezasaline, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory that made the bleeding stop immediately. I didn't want to stay on medication longterm so I started taking probiotics. That worked.
My doctor prescribed xifaxan orsm and he found blood and high calprotectin. My belly hurts everyday and bloats up and pulsates. The instructions on this medicne say do not take when bleeding from intestine so I dont know why he gave it to me

A good friend of mine at work solidly believes that black seed oil has taken away the pain for his Crohns. 🤍 MSM is something that I take for pain, personally joint pain, gallbladder pain -new studies even suggest it helps with anxiety due to it being absorbable through the blood brain barrier The sulfuric compound is found in cruciferous vegetables and stimulates liver function and the glutathione production in the liver Aids in connective tissue, joints, hair, nails, skin and detoxification. I cannot recommend that stuff enough MRM Nutrition makes a decent form of it and various other supplements like their collagen I love that will also help to protect and repair the gut, stomach etc
aloe vera edible gel is beneficial for oesophagus erosion. some people on chron make banana diets with great results as it acts as an intestinal anti inflammatory

Cooked jalapeño has helped me. I eat einkorn flour which is better than regular flour and is easier to digest. Also garlic has made my stomach feel better. I’m continuing my healing journey. I’ve had colitis for 4 years. I’ve come along way.
Hi Dr Berg. I had a couple of questions in relation to your recommendations: 1) wouldn’t a vitamin d intake of 40,000 iu daily be toxic, causing calcification? How long could someone take this dosage? 2) I have been using a spore based probiotic that has studies showing higher survival rates of the bacteria and able to better colonise in the colon. Do you have any thoughts on these types of probiotics? 3) would it be beneficial to take copper along with the zinc supplement? Especially if taken on a long term basis? Also which type of zinc do you suggest? 4) wheatgrass: what are your thoughts on inflammation and gut irritation caused by plant lectins? Thank you for the information and all your hard work helping people improve their health!
I tried Vsl #3. It made my UC worse. I don't take it any longer. Each individual needs to figure out their own diet and what works for them. Keep a food diary. I have cut out dairy except eggs, gluten, sugar and most meats. I've been in remission for 2 years. No medication for UC. I'm at my best when I exercise every day. For me exercise is walking for at least 30 minutes every day.
My ritual exactly. Wake up , drink a liter of water and head outside for a brisk walk especially up hills without stopping for 2 miles straight every morning has been a Godsend. Every single day. My digestive system feels good and I feel energized for the rest of the day. No brain fog. Mental clarity. Many people do not walk every day. Walking outside is a blessing in disguise
I’m disappointed you didn’t really discuss bone broth. It is filled with healing collagen, lots of vitamins, minerals and most importantly electrolytes. It is my go to when I’m in a flare up. If you decide to a more in depth video on UC I’d also suggest mentioning how sucralose affects UC. Sucralose changes the bacteria in the gut to the point it can send a person with UC right into a flare up.
I suspected suraclose to be the main cause of my UC. I was really into zero-calorie energy drinks since I did not like coffee. I use to drink lots of sugar free/diet products and have sugar free condiments. I went on remicade to heal my UC which worked and stopped drinking energy drinks but as soon as I began to drink energy drinks 3-4 times a week for about a month I noticed a flare happening with irregular bowel movements. I stopped all surcalose/artifical sweeters only using monk fruit (I should stop this too by putting an end to all 0 calorie sweaters) Any 0 calorie sweeter gets digested in the colon hence why it's zero calorie. I read a post on reddit on how Monster energy drinks are making some peoples bowel movement showing blood... Interesting? Surcalose is also found in most gums. I use to chew a lot of gum at the time too...
I agree. Only food I can eat in a flare up situation is bone broth and really nothing else! But he mentioned that in a video and said that you stay on a carnivore diet for 2 months (4:00). Of course GAPS diet is the right eating protocol for this situation.
@@Drberg thank you for taking the time to respond. Following your advice on videos and going through Ramadan fasting so intermittent fast will be easier to commit to after this! And fasting works for every disease
This is something I'm worried about as well. I had an eating disorder when I was younger. Finally got comfortable eating whatever I wanted to without feeling horrible about it. And now UC flare is so bad that I can't stomach anything. Feels scary to try a restrictive diet again. :(
Hi Dr Berg, Do you still recommend VSL#3? They lost a lawsuit because it was found they weren't using the formulation that was developed initially which supported the sucessful clinical trials. The person that developed the original formulation created another company called Visbiome. Any thoughts on this? Best!
My wife suffered from Ulcerative colitis which was very difficult to diagnose in Nigeria.finally we had to travel to India in 2016 where she was treated @ Chennai Madras Medical Mission.she was given sulfasalizine,Azithioprine, vitamin D,steroids eg prednisolone and also ate alot of veggies carbages and less carbohydrates ..her condition was so bad..she had serious bloody diarrhea but thank God she got much better. She was completely healed after 2 yrs and is now very ok. My Question..Is Ulcerative Colitis curable?
My Mom takes Digestinol, which helped her. It is concentrated Aloe plant I believe with L-Glutamine as well. I guess it is a major anti-oxidant. At any rate, she used to have it very bad. To the point where she would go to the bathroom several times before taking the shortest trip. Some of that I believe is from the anxiety cycle of just not being sure if things are going to be OK and the anxiety making it not OK. Regardless, the symptoms have gone down over the last decade or so to where it is hardly an issue. She also regularly takes bentonite clay. I don't know if that has anything to do with UC. I think that is more for heavy metals.
