Samus is authentic. When we use Heideggers term, you are authentic when you define yourself and don't let others define you. Existencialism is based on Heidegger. There is no reason to believe that Samus doesn't perceive herself as a man. Still, she acts masculine and has a masculine agenda. Players were surprised Samus is a girl since they constructed her as male because of those attributes. She doesn't wear gender markers, but a purely practical battle armour because she has no need to prove her gender since she knows who she is. She doesn't let others define her but defines herself.

+Alex Bermann thats a good observation, helped put a lot of things into perspective. its strange how characters in popular culture can help explain existential issues like this. i suppose its how pantheons work. sexuality is undeniably one of the biggest aspects of womanhood. historically we've seen societies completely unrelated to each other by space and time arrive at those same conclusions. samus represents masculinity, and historically we could call that exceptionalism, because, well, she's looks and acts like a man in that suit.... its like a metal hijab, hiding what makes her female :P
@AlexBermann
@AlexBermann 8 лет назад
I wouldn't agree to the second part. In my opinion, feminimity is a concept which doesn't really have anything to do with womanhood. A woman can be masculine and a man can be feminime. Furthermore, sexuality can be a part of a womans life, but it does not need to - and when it's a part, it doesn't have to be geared towards men. So it doesn't really inherently differ from a mans sexuality. When you look around, you find people who have womanhood as a part of their identity while biologically being men. You have people who neither include womanhood nor manhood into their identity. Interestingly, there is a debate among lesbians wether lesbians are women - the lesbians who claim that that's not the case argue that womanhood is defined by their relation towards men. Since they don't share that relationship, they deny the label (Monique Wittig is famous for that position). Back to Heidegger: A big point of Heideggers criticism of conventional thinking was the idea of the "one" as in "as one knows" or "one doesn't do that". Both "a man" and "a woman" ar such "ones". (Sorry if my translation is unconventional, I read Heidegger in German and he has an infamous use of language.) So let's get to my claim: Samus doesn't act like a man. She acts like a woman - and this woman is Samus. We call some of Samus character traits and of her behavior masculine. However, we can also find feminime traits. While Super Metroid didn't have much plot, but that plot included maternal instincts on Samus side. Based on these things: he suit is the opposite of a hijab. To show the difference clearer, I'll use the more extreme form of concealment in this argument: the Burqa. Both under Samus suit and under a Burqa, you don't really see anything about the person. However, the Burqa is a clear gende marker - it's womens clothing. Samus armor is an outfit which is there for the very practical reason of protection (both against force and against uninhabitable environments). So: a woman who wears hijab puts herself into the category "woman". Samus wear armor because she values her life - not to express feminimity of masculinity. In her case, it's us who put her into the category.
@muhammadinks4293

well said, alex and you've made a good distinction between the hijab and the suit in regards to purposes for both. i guess what i was referring to was the more simple observation that the hijab conceals and so does the suit, but of course, like you've said, the reasons are completely different. her suit concealing the shape of her body is more of a by product than intentional whereas the hijab is primarily aimed at concealment, but overtly marking the person as female simultaneously. i find the hair splitting very confusing when it comes to defining gender... i mean c'mon lesbians are women, right? i know its just a theory but would't yo say its more about deviance against societal norms, than biology? i haven't read Heidegger, but the work sounds really interesting. any tips for where i could find out more?
@AlexBermann
@AlexBermann 8 лет назад
+Muhammad Inks Thanks for the compliment. You're right: it's not about biology at all. This leads me to what my claim is: "womanhood" is seperate from biology and from sexuality. It's hard to define, but there are at least two factors to it. First, there is the factor of societal norms. If you look at several kinds of culture, you have the returning pattern of rituals which allow former children entry in "manhood" or "womanhood". Second, it's a part of identity which even can form seperate from the social availability of the social category. But let's get to Heidegger: finding more about him shouldn't be hard. Pretty much all of existencialism builds on his work. There are three problems with Heidegger. First, starting with his books would be really hard since Heidegger is near incomprehensible by German standarts. "The School of Life" here on RU-vid has a nice introduction about what "Sein und Zeit" is all about. Depending on where you live, yu might even cconsider buying an inntroduction level book into 20th century philosophy. Another approach would be th lecture series "A History of philosophy" by wheatoncollege here on RU-vid, even though the focus is different there.

some great pointers alex, thanks. you seem clued up on the subject, have you studied philosophy? everything can be looked at subjectively, and we can deconstruct the reality around us into fanciful theories and thats what the whole debate over gender is increasingly looking like. even flat earth theories have some legitimacy in comparison. wouldn't you say that regardless of the existential reality, men appear to have a degree over women? thats the bottom line, right? i'll check out the youube videos you suggested, being the lazy soul that i am ;)

Having gone onto a few of this series' comment sections today, it is painfully apparent that most commenters completely miss the point of the series. It's right there in the description: "Introduce famous thinkers, problems, and concepts with quotes, teachings, and more." Why are people so scared to challenge their conceptions. Why is learning about something different equivalent to a positive assertions of said things? Calm the fuck down.
@LIGHTNINGxPUNK

+Paris Stalker -soooo they watch the video take in the information and reconcile the new point of view with their own. -what if they challenge their conception and come to the same conclusion. -also if we mean woman biologically, then there is no question of what a woman is, same with men -if what we mean by woman is some socially constructed identity that's when we run into this problem -why does one become a woman? do you have to act a certain way? isn't that limiting? -why is it that men are always the oppressors? who actually runs the fashion industry? -if women are only biological or sexual objects, men are only biological organisms and utilities -haven't you heard "are men obsolete?" (because they're little more than an appliance to a lot of people) -this is for the most part a result of sexual dimorphism -some people are just tired of feels over reals -honestly all that matters (at least to me) is what you DO -after taking into consideration things from multiple sides a lot of the modern day identity politics not only mean nothing they tend to also cause division among people and after a while people run into a sort of morality fatigue, and like any sort of fatigue this can lead to frustration, and anger. combine his with the anonymity of the internet and the current social and political climate and now you have to watch your every move or offend someone by mistake, and yeah people are eventually get pissed and this could (but most likely won't) result in secondary deviance. -"....then let me be evil" or "I didn't choose the thug life the thug life chose me" -these are the sorts of mentalities that spawn from constantly being condemned for existing -while this video may be mild, what happens when something irritates your skin and you start to vigorously rub it? does it not become more irritated

So I think the message de Beauvoir and Wisecrack were trying to get across has been misinterpreted. A lot of people down here are arguing about whether it's men or women who "have it worse" when the video was saying not that all men have it easy but that women are looked down upon and thought of as lesser simply for being women and no other reason. It was saying that when we see a man we see a person in all his glory and potential and when we see a woman we see a woman and nothing else.

I wonder if that last line isn't a little more open then just that. Yes, it leads into the idea that she, as a woman, lacks autonomy and has thus been pressured into wearing said bikini. But it also begs the question "can she not choose to wear the bikini of her own free will?" That is, if she chose not to wear the bikini, would that be because her lack of autonomy forced her to rebel, thus creating another instance of a lack of autonomy? So has the woman lost all hope of autonomy, being forced to either conform or rebel?
@markmurex6559
@markmurex6559 7 лет назад
But she was only rendered in a bikini for the shock value of the audience finding out she was a woman, so.....
@MagicWhatsItCalled
@MagicWhatsItCalled 7 лет назад
Well of course a woman has the free will to choose to wear a bikini, but the problem here is Samus is a fictional character created by someone else and can't make decisions for herself. Someone made the decision to put her in a bikini and this is kind of a problem because one could argue that Samus made the decision to wear the bikini but the fact remains that the developer chose to show Samus in the bikini when they could have just as easily given her some clothes.
@junamboqcg2369
@junamboqcg2369 7 лет назад
Is it really a problem, though? The bikini, from a developer/player point of view, merely highlights the fact that she is a woman. This is after she has just finished a long series of pure badassery. If the bikini - or her sex entirely - somehow takes away or invalidates her actions, then there's a problem. And that's not a problem propagated by the developers, but by the condemning audience. Ideally, Samus's reveal could have shown her completely nude, completely covered, or anywhere in between without consequence.

There are some things I agree with, and others I don't, with de Beauvoir. Personally, I think the way we treat women in society is one of the subjects that society refuses to look at the most. I disagree with the extent that de Beauvoir says women are objects. In a lot of instances, yes, they are treated as such, but sometimes the woman is someone that character genuinely cares for. Sacrifice is something a lot of people can relate to, and as a film maker/writer/game designer, they need to find a universal ploy to get the viewer/player to care about what they're doing. "Does our presumed gaming audience care about pretty princesses? Yes? Let's have them save them." Or "Does our presumed film audience care about pretty ladies? Put one in distress." I think society's problem isn't that everyone's a fucking sexist monster like a lot of extreme feminists like to point out, but that a lot of things that we've done, without even realizing it, IS sexist. For instance, ONLY making women play sexy characters or damsels in distress, whereas all of the men get all of the interesting roles, is sexist, and it says that society only sees them as such. What I think society needs to do to help this problem is to create more Samus's and FemShep's. Create more women that have autonomy and can create their own story. We can still have sexy, we can sitll have damsels, we just need BALANCE, and I think that's something a lot of people these days are missing.

+CrimsonOptics The thing is, it's just the gaming companies trying to make games for men, who make up a large majority of gamers. It's not society being sexist, it's just that men want to see men in interesting roles.

+No Name Females now make up 48% of the gaming population. In 2010 it was only 40% but it increases every year. It's not longer as skewed as it once was in the gaming space. (This is according to a quick google search not hard research on the subject).
@RowanAldridge
@RowanAldridge 8 лет назад
Nicholas Hildenbrand that's something I've heard a lot. However, that study actually only found that women make up about 48% of people who *frequently play video games in any form*, including virtual board games, card games such as solitaire, endless running games such as Subway Surfers, and matching games like candy crush and bejeweled, and it found that the distribution was that most women who play games only play these kinds of games. In short, the majority of women who play video games play games that have no protagonist or story, and the majority of people who play games that have stories and characters are men.
@nicholashildenbrand8632
@nicholashildenbrand8632 8 лет назад
I gotcha. That makes sense.
@CrimsonOptics
@CrimsonOptics 8 лет назад
No Name Well those women probably play those games because they feel alienated from games sometimes. Like how guys always make a big deal about when a woman is on an online game, or how most gaming protagonists are men, and that is probably because part of the gaming market still thinks video games are a men thing, but they really aren't. Even in my area, the south, there are girl gamers who enjoy games like jrpgs, shooters, action games, and so on, because they're fun, and they aren't just recent either. They've been playing since they were kids. Women still play video games, but I'd say if you cut out the candy crush and the bejeweled shit, it's about 35-40%, but that's still almost half, and the numbers are catching up now that games have male and female protagonists. In fact, most female gamers I've known, and I've known quite a few, do care about story and gameplay. They're just like male gamers, honestly. The problem is we just need more games that feature competent women, aka, more human. We shouldn't be fighting and suing people over what characters they want to put in a video game, we just need to show them that women care about games just as much as guys do, and they'll expand their markets accordingly.

I like how a video just passively restating feminist philosophy, without even taking a side even, still has more down votes than anything else they've done. I guess saying "Women had it rough in the late 1940's" is just too controversial.
@howellkatz2063
@howellkatz2063 9 лет назад
Natasel Sure, everyone's had it rough, but that doesn't make it invalid to examine the social forces that create one group's relative oppression when compared to other people within the same culture. Recognizing that living conditions have improved for society in general doesn't make it wrong to recognize inequality in society. And then it's also important to consider how different forms of oppression intersect depending on the different identities a person carries with them. I'm not sure what point one can really hope to make by saying that even being a King in medieval times didn't get you cable TV, if we also know that being a king in that same era guaranteed your livelihood. To bring it back to the topic described here, I don't know how relevant it really is to bring up the functionality of a loo when the ability to participate in government, opportunities in education, the right to own property, and bodily self-determination in general was (and arguably still is) largely determined by circumstance of birth.

So, how would you define "pussying," exactly?
@RAB957
@RAB957 9 лет назад
Howell Katz I wouldn't put it like that exactly, but I'd define the same thing as not realizing we now live in a world where people have equal oppurtunities in most cases and disregarding the importance of the individual. What I mean by that is that people subscribing to mainstream feminist ideologies generally can't see past "groups" or society at large. What others realize is the reality of the situation: what you do and how hard you work also plays a big role in determining your status for instance, if not the biggest role. *Some* of the "social justice warriors" and feminists get stuck on society and structural oppression, when in fact *you* are the one determining how *your own life* will turn out and *you* should take responsibility for it. Highlighting injustice - yes please. Cowering behind "structural oppression", norms in society and gender ideals to justify avoiding personal responsibility? I guess that's as close to pussying as you can get.
@howellkatz2063
@howellkatz2063 9 лет назад
I think it's important to consider that learning how to navigate an oppressive system and calling out that oppressive system are not mutually exclusive things. It's not about avoiding personal responsibility; rather, by pointing out how the system is oppressive and working to change it, you're actually taking more charge over your life than if you were to simply accept the way things are. To take one example, with the Black Lives Matter movement, people who point out the disproportionate brutality faced by black people in the U.S. are not necessarily choosing that criticism over whatever survival methods they already have. Or, to take some more widespread feminist activism as an example, feminists who organize "Take Back the Night" events are not necessarily foregoing personal safety just because they're vocalizing the disproportionate level of sexual assault faced by women. (That is to say, they may still be taking the steps necessary in order to maintain their own personal safety at the same time as they are organizing events to draw attention to the ways in which our culture is unsafe.) Or, to draw from trans activism, people who draw attention to the level of violence faced by the trans community are not necessarily out as trans people, since being out, in itself, puts their lives in more danger than if they weren't. It's a false dichotomy when we say that people aren't taking responsibility just because they're pointing out how our culture is oppressive. People who choose one or the other, to be blunt, are either silent or dead.

This applies to both woman and man at the same time. If society has a specific expectation to what is a woman, said society also has a specific expectation to be a man. If a man presents any quality that would be acceptable in a woman, he is considered as "girly" as "less of a man". The question would be, if calling a man that cries as "don't be a girl" is a discrimination against the man that cries, or a discrimination against woman because crying is something woman are expected to do, or both? Some anarchists in Spain during the civil war considered that man and woman were different, but that they were also equivalent. In other words, man and woman are not the same, but they both have the same value as human beings.

Persona Ohnlyne The problem is men have historically had the power over women, and thus they have been in charge of the definitions of what is right and what is wrong, thus women have had less agency in comparison to men. Normally also, the traits of men are generally considered good things to have. Brave, Sacrificial, Strong, Muscular etc, Women's traits especially in media are normally always presented as an objectification for men's admiration, Voluptuous, Sexy, Cute etc. I don't think men's traits are being used to make them appeal to women.

I heard so much about de Beauvoir's "The Second Sex" for so many years that I finally gave it a try last year. The problem I ran into was that I had already read a famous play by Aristophanes called "Lysistrata." In that play its only theme was that if the wives of the soldiers of the Peloponnesian War would cross their legs when these soldiers were on leave, that soon that war would end. In the play, that war that had been going on for more than thirty years ended within one year strictly because of the women in Athens putting their feet down. de Beauvoir mentions this play twice in "The Second Sex" and both times she says that it was not a serious work of art, that it was a comedy, that Aristophanes was just joking around. And both times de Beauvoir fails to mention or even allude to the main, to the one and only theme in that play. This is what I call dishonesty. It's not saying women cause war, something attributed to Freud, but rather this playwrite was saying that women can sure as shoot end war. If they wanted to. And so because of her dishonesty re this play I had to give up reading "The Second Sex" after only twenty pages, and a brief visit to her index to find out if she ever was honest about "Lysistrata" found out she wasn't, and then closed that book forever. All de Beauvoir had to do was not mention something that I knew otherwise about, and I probably would have read her famous book. Some kinds of dishonesty get you thrown out of class.

***** Tried and tried again to read Nausea by Sartre. Couldn't do it. I look at the cover of Being And Nothingness daily. I think I read a few pages of it a long time ago? Am not sure if I've ever finished anything by Sartre. I know I'm supposed to, but. Everybody points to The Stranger as Camus' best work or whatever, but I liked The Plague much more. de Sade's Juliette is something I'm proud of, proud that I finally finished reading it. Took me two years, and at one point I put it down for six months, but I finished! Now that is one heck of a book, Juliette. Justine, not so much. I sold that one back to the bookstore, as I also did with The Philosophy of the Bedroom, all by de Sade. Jacques Derrida has to be a joke, eh? I tried "reading?" Derrida, if you can call it that, but no. I would just rather think if Derrida as someone who was joking around. Although he did write in French, so as someone who reads English only, I may never be privy to the truth on that one, and the horse's mouth isn't going to help us at this point either, cuz he's dead. My point is that though I can't say I'm a fan of existentialism, I do favor it over the writings of those who are said to be deconstructionistic philosophers, of whom I haven't real all that much.

***** 53. Yes, I've read a few books in my day too. If there's something I can't hang with, I don't berate or chastise myself too much; there's only so much room between my ears, gotta slow the intake down at some point, eh? So with Derrida. Either it's an Emporer's New Clothes deal, or there's this whole other "language" one has to learn in grad school, in Philosophy grad school to be specific. And it's not a language like French or Italian, no, it's the "language" of jargon. Maybe after a few years of learning their "language" one might be able to understand Derrida. I'm leaning toward Emporer's New Clothes BTW. Of all the stuff I learned in school, and after school, I'm just not using deconstructionism in everyday life at all. And not missing it. In fact, I think I need to go to Barnes And Noble and skim through "Deconstructionism for Dummies" just for a refresher.

TheZzpop Hahaha... Yea no. I can't wear anything fem without being hated, My girlfriend can wear what ever she wants. I cannot do anything that would denounce masculinity, my girlfriend was openly invited to join a unisex, underground mixed martial arts tournament without anyone batting an eye. I cannot wear my hair long because people would point it out and make fun of me, my girlfriend could go bald and be called brave. I was forced to work when i was 12 and have been working since then and only just recently was able to retire from blue collar work into something more specialized after getting my associates, my girlfriend started working when she was 21, and two years later got am internship at a pretty decent firm without completing college. Also, women do this to. Many girls force men into a position where they have to be the provider, and if I were to say that I would like to be a stay at home dad, I would be viewed as incompetent, lazy and unfit to be a good husband.

Why define yourself by the standards of the opposite gender at all? Homo Sapiens are a sexually dimorphic species. Males and females are very different in terms of biology and behaviour and consequently we have very different standards of achievement for both sexes. I wouldn't expect a woman to bench press twice her own bodyweight any more than I would expect a man to gestate a foetus. For all intents and purposes, we are different. It would be entirely idiotic to attempt to define yourself by a set of characteristics you simply do not posses.

***** But how do you define power? Who is more powerful? The male who trundles off to battle to defend his country and family? The male who (throughout most of human history) had to work outdoors in mind-bendingly dangerous jobs that were more suited to his increased physical prowess? Or the woman who gets to stay safe at home with the kids and engage in activity which wasn't nearly as demandingly physical as what the men had to do? The woman who,--thanks to her reproductive value--will probably be captured by an enemy army instead of killed outright, or who will be thought of as far more valuable (and thus protected) in the event of a crisis? In the olden days, men got to rule because it was strength and the ability to create technology that made it possible to rule. In this day and age, technology (which has largely been created by men) has wiped away the strength/tedious mental work advantage that men as a whole possess, allowing women to work outside the home and delay/forgo childcaring. But women still command the vast resources of men, through government programs, child custody laws and police forces which have been set up to protect women's interests. Women get more out of society today than men do (while they work fewer hours in jobs that require less training/responsibility than those commonly held by men.-- You won't find the feminists who are clamoring for 50 percent of women to be CEOs clamoring for 50 percent of women to be sewage workers or oil roughneckers..) There is absolutely nothing stopping a woman from running for office or taking control of a company, if she has the talent and the drive to do these things. But there's the thing. She has to be willing to work as long and as hard as a man (and probably forgo childbirth) if she wants to go as far as a man would in that field.
@Skippy19812
@Skippy19812 9 лет назад
yomomasboss In the male/female sexual dichotomy transsexuals don't fit the traditional gender binary and therefore it would also be foolhardy to compare the achievements of a transsexual to that of either gender. When comparing oranges to apples, adding a banana into the equation doesn't make any difference to the outcome. Regardless of weather or not you are a trans person you still should not be comparing your own level of achievement with that of others since that is a recipe for a very unhappy existence. Besides, one might argue that making the transition is an achievement in and of itself and one which is unobtainable to the traditional gender types.

The human culture was created by men and the women are understood as a part (or object) of that culture. Yes, that's true. But saying that it is a form of oppression is a mistaken view. In the early societies, when there was only a few resources and humanity were extremely vulnarable to endless adversities of nature, men differentiated themselves from women not to create an oppressive social system but as a form of survival and perpetuation of the species. Treating women as the "other" sex was crucial to human survival because that view eased women's life and, therefore, decreased the chances of death in childbirth and natural abortion. While men were chasing animals and looking for a place to shelter their families - afterall, it was their role as the "main" sex -, completely exposed to death, women were taking care of their babes or doing much less dangerous activities (an exclusive advantage of the "other" sex). Only later in history - after a great creation of wealth, advanced technologies and democracy - that the view of women as the "other" sex, the same view that contributed so much to our development as species, was considered as a "machist" view, as a characteristic of an oppressive system created by the "patriarchy". I wonder: if women and men had the same role in the beginning of history of mankind ( that means: women and men chasing animals together, doing equal work, performing the same functions), it would be possible for human race to even reach the 21th century?
@daveyrobinson3779
@daveyrobinson3779 8 лет назад
Men don't just oppress women, we also oppress ourselves, even more so then women. Men also created the standards that make a man a man. If you are a man who does anything feminine, you are no longer a male, you are lower than a female. Women have throughout history deceived feminine stereotypes. From warrior females in Rome, to Vikings women in Nordic cultures, there aren't many, but there have been women who earned their place among men. All men do not get to simply take the elevator, that is complete bullshit. A man MUST act as a man, he MUST meet those stringent standards, it might seem easier from a woman's perspective, but that's only because men do have an easier time meeting those masculine requirements. From our naturally high testosterone, to the way that we're raised to not cry for anything, to "take it like a man" to work like a man. Hard strenuous labor is placed upon men at a very young age, and it only gets worse as we age. We place these standards on men because of our biological structure and our built in survival mechanisms. Women have an intrinsic value from their ability to give birth. Eggs are expensive while seeds are cheap as dirt. It's our biological economy that dictates much of how we interact with the world around us. It's women who take the elevators straight to value, while men must be at constant strife and conflict with themselves, the world around them, and other men in order to earn even the tiniest shred of personal value. Women who see only men taking the elevators are the women who see only a very small handful of men in the world, those with power, while all the rest are completely ignored and passed off as wastes of space.

Natasel Look. I imagine that you are some guy who thinks feminism is some stupid movement that will die off eventually. But let me tell you something. Since I am a feminist, I am standing up and speaking out to other people who think that girls are but only sex objects and that boys are never allowed to cry in public. I am a feminist because when a boy is told "He hits a baseball like a girl", it's considered an insult. Still today, little girls (some as young as 11 or 12 years old) are being given away as brides to old men. They are used for their bodies and have children sometimes before they become a TEENAGER. Look, you have just made one of the stupidest points I have ever heard. A simple Google search would have sent you straight.
@TheRantMaster53
@TheRantMaster53 9 лет назад
Olivia Isme I agree. Some of those shithole third-world countries that treat women more like animals than human beings definitely need feminism. But does the western world need it? I don't really think so. I personally think all the goals of feminism have already been achieved in the western world. So I am not a feminist, but I certainly don't think feminism equates to racism. Maybe radical feminism.
@hot4crocs443
@hot4crocs443 9 лет назад
TheRantMaster53 Yeah, just remember one thing. Being a feminist is not about being a lesbian and planning that girls rule the world and that there is no need for males. In fact, that is quite the opposite of feminism. Feminism is the simple idea that girls are still human, and that we all should be treated equally despite whatever gender, race, or sexual orientation you make be. And by getting behind this video, you're making a feminist move. Standing up for something that is right or getting behind something that is right is, quite frankly, one of the bravest things we as humans can do, so I congratulate you on doing something that looks so simple, yet makes a difference. Unfortunately, there is a lot of things that can be done better in the western world when we talk about feminism. Some men (and even women) see females as nothing more than something used to re-populate the earth. We are seen by some as someone who needs to "stay in the kitchen". It's a sad day when you realize that your own mother has been doomed to a life of cleaning and taking care of kids, because she just "has to" while my dad is out making "end's meat". As you know, the trouble of feminism becomes more severe as you go into the lower-class countries. However, I figure, if the majority of us are brave enough to stand behind the idea of equality and a peaceful world, one day, Earth could become that Utopia that seems like nothing more than a dream right now.

You'll notice a male is talking. You'll notice that the person that is talking isn't on screen. I think visually seeing her heightens emotional investment so those that are emotionally stirred by women 'attacking their video games' they will act out more often than if an unseen man is narrating.

Because Wisecrack didn't do it in a condescending manner, steal other people's gaming footage, scam people and play the professional victim role like Anita did. As for the objectiviifcation argument: if you make a female character with feminine traits you get accused of promoting stereotypes..... but when you make a strong female character, then you are accused of making her follow male control roles. There is no winning with cultural studies hipsters.
@politure

His Divine Shadow Yeah I agree, I would say that this effect was also accentuated by the stigma surrounding (for lack of a better term) "that type of feminist". edit- thought of a better term, feminists.

Awesome video as always! !!!! And after reading some of the comments, and how some ppl are of the opinion that sexism still isn't a thing & feminists are "stupid & selfish"; it reminds me of the ppl who still try to claim that racism still isn't a thing-even in our country. The argument that women today are afforded equal rights & that feminism is a stupid concept, aren't looking at the whole picture. There are still many parts of the world were women are property of men, female castration,forced child prostitution, etc etc. That's why when ppl say "oh feminists are being dumb whiny bitches, bc things are equal now," women get infuriated. So ppl need stop, and b4 they start trash talking, try to look it from the other side.

I dislike the current tone the discourse around identity politics has taken with "the patriarchy" and other buzzwords like that. People are basing it on feelings and hypotheticals rather than fact, science and logic. I care about what is factual, not mindless speculation. There is a very real agenda that wants to "prove" that everything comes down to social factors and upbringing rather than nature, but there is scientific evidence that shows that some things are in fact predetermined. Women are, on average, better at linguistics and empathy, while males are more predisposed to math and logic. I hate that people get so riled up about this, since it is, as stated, a general statement. Equal opportunity still reigns supreme. Arbitrary quotas are stupid and counterproductive.
@Warriorpend2
@Warriorpend2 8 лет назад
+CassnassXXL You should check out Robert Sapolsky's work if you think that science shows some things are predetermined. Also, don't dismiss "arbitrary quotas" until you've read the relevant arguments on affirmative action. I will supply some introductory material: plato.stanford.edu/entries/affirmative-action/

The first one may be older, so that research might be a bit dated by now, still, as far as I'm aware the debate is ongoing. The second link shows that the brains are different as well, including mental disorders and the like. People get very offended when someone suggests there may be differences in general spheres of intelligence between males and females or other races, but one has to remember that it's about averages and everyone still deserves the same shots. While I am good at math, I am still better at linguistics and am in fact studying it on University level. Most of the people in the class are women, but there are other males as well. Most chess grandmasters are male as well, since that seems to be an area where the kinds of things males are good at shine. Still, Judit Polgar is a brilliant chess player in her own right. In short, equal opportunity should reign supreme regardless of scientific outcome. Arbitrary quotas solve nothing.

I bet this video triggered a lot of men, mostly because they do not actually know what it means or what it feels like to be a woman in a men-centric society. We are moving forward though, there are women in power as well as women who enjoy playing the role of the traditional idea of a woman (like cooking and cleaning for a partner or becoming a mother or not having a paying job). Men also pressure one another into being "manly" and I think that is only exacerbating the situation we are having with gender. The more men try to be "manly", the more they are unintentionally or intentionally forcing roles onto others. I do not think all men consciously oppress women, and there are plenty of women out there who do it every day when they judge other women based on their idea of what a woman is. I have been judged more by women in my life than men and I think it is because of the pressure they feel not anything about me. I have spent most of my life actively oppressing my "feminine side" to prove to myself that I am in control of what I am not society. I don't use makeup, I have stopped shaving and even mostly stopped wearing a bra. But isn't that just the rebel inside of me that wants to be different, an individual. Maybe, but maybe it is my choice to decide whether I want to take part in that stageplay we call gender roles.

A woman is a person of the female gender. Womanly is a personality type. Sexism has pretty much been made illegal (in certain countries) so no woman is forced to act womanly, some choose to, others do not. And even men are free to act womanly.

GREATGAIWAIN Don't be stupid. I'm obviously talking about sexism in professional environments. Of course you can't stop people from being sexist in private or even from expressing their opinions, but treating a co-worker that way will not only get you fired instantly, but maybe sued for sexual harassment. Which can get you jail time. Not to mention that myth about women getting paid less is only just a myth. So yeah, sexism is pretty much illegal.

+Sassy Roro if you take into account the choices people make that gap nearly vanishes. just a couple of examples-> hours worked. ex 40 hrs. vs 60 hrs type of job. ex. school teacher or nurse vs. project manager for the military or a doctor time off. maternity leave + regular leave vs. just regular leave. also look at the earnings of men and women fresh out of college and you'll see the women actually earning more.

it sounds like Mlle de Beauvoir was still defining herself and her gender on men's standards. by defining women as "other" she created a clear line between "men" and "women", and I think that's part of the problem. there is no reason why there should be His and Hers Scotch tape (and it exists) this delineation of genders is at the root of the problem. not to mention that it leaves out all the other "genders" that people have definitions for now, although that is another aggrandizing issue that involves people generally not happy with their identity for one reason or another

I think people were surprised just because most, if not all, the game protagonist were male, so, when confronted with a mystery sex, they assume is male just because statistically speaking, its probably male. At least, that's how I would have viewed it. I would be very surprised if anyone (who are adults) thought of Samus any less than they did before they knew she was a woman. The only reason we expect males to serve the hero role is simply because that's usually the case. When a female fulfills that role, we like it just as much, if not more so, for seeing something unique and different. The only place I see where male video game heroes being favored over females is with little boys or young teen boys. I was there myself once, but most, if not all, grow out of it and become more accepting of women. If there is this sort of sexism in adults, its probably present with younger male adults than older male adults.

What is a woman? The lady wrote a book and came up no answer is acceptable because of the patriarchy? At the end they have Samus vacuuming the carpet and then fighting Mother brain? Either choice she makes doesn't change the fact that she's a woman. Samus didn't choose to become a woman she always was. She decided to go fight space pirates instead of bake cookies and wait for the men to show up. That doesn't mean she's not a woman.
