There is something about Peter's album that is just so pure. As a teenager, it didn't work for me. I remember buying the CD, and shelving it not long after. But as the years went on, it just has that vibe. That downtown, city, train track...almost GOOD TIMES quality to it. (I know that sounds silly), but there is something to it. Just a pure nostalgic vibe that just works. To me, it even blends perfectly to the green on the cover and the beauty of this armour, and cross. There is just SOMETHING there. It all works. I can TOTALLY agree with the choice of singles, and as we have talked before, "I Can't Stop The Rain" is just a beast. My goodness. Such a powerful song. I love to see John on this, as whenever you mention Peter...John B Good had better come to your mind. 😊 Take care.
Totally Ric. It's cool how all 4 of the solos have their own vibe and exist in their own little worlds, separate from each other, and the rest of the KISS catalog. that is what makes them all special to me. John and I had a great time on this. We are doing Gene's next. And you know who I think about when I mention Gene Simmons solo album.... I hope your week is amazing man!
Here's something that you might not know. In 1979, Sean Delaney released a solo album with a very interesting cover art. I own a copy of it and on some of the songs, kiss might play on it. They are thanked on the back cover.
Hang in there @johnbgoode! I'm Chicago tough with weather and it's still tough!!! Happy to watch this because you two know exactly what you're talking about!
This was a great discussion!! Really enjoyed John B's input. You two were discussing Bob Seger and I think Rock Me Baby sounds so much like Bob. Great video!! Listened to it on way home.. ty Brant!
Gene's mis-mosh is exactly what he wanted to do, I think. Gene has some hard rock, has some softer Beatle-esque songs, he has a range, I think it's cool. Peter, I always feel as if he went back to his roots?? Yes he can play hard rock, but I always felt he was paying tribute to his childhood music icons by doing this type of album. I can imagine the shock after hearing him do baby driver and getaway, this type of album. My mom always told me it was a bit different, so I really had no shock about Peter's album.
"That's the kind of sugar papa likes" comes from the movie treasure of the Sierra madre, 1948, w Humphrey Bogart. They are referring to the loot/ treasure they are trying to find.
I've always liked Peter's solo album. It was one of the first LPs that I bought back in 1984. I became a KISS fan in 1983 so I had no idea that you weren't supposed to like it! 😄 I think the only way to make his album better would have been if the versions would have been more raw just like KISS played TOSSIN' AND TURNIN' on DYNASTY tour. By the way you can find my acoustic guitar arrangement and rendition of I CAN'T STOP THE RAIN on my channel. Long live KISS, Jarkko/MyVinylBar
I am looking forward you guys to start reviewing the solo albums. So much history and happenings around that time. The car wrecks, the drug abuse, the inflated egos, the money and fame, the stress in the band, the Phantom movie. It will be a good dig with you guys I am sure.
The minutia on PC solo album is, he was involved in a bad car accident two weeks before the solo album was recorded. He was supposed to write songs for it but couldn't because he was convalessing.
This is off topic, but I’m buzzed from a weed vape and just got blown away by Paul’s vocal range in Just A Boy. Followed by “Met along the way” last line in Odyssey.
@@InMyHeaddoing well thanks! Have you noticed they removed the Solo albums from the KISS discography in Spotify? Not long ago I was comparing the total listens on each album. Peter’s is available on his own channel.
IMO, the thing that curses the 4 solo albums were the choice for singles. I can't stop the rain, it's alright and always near you would have made the solo albums much more successful.
He should’ve used Steve Lukather’s talent more. He’s an awesome guitarist. I would’ve dropped a couple of the slower tunes and ask Paul and Ace if they had any rockers he could use. That would’ve stroked Paul’s ego and maybe brought the two closer.
Great discussion, I agree and disagree with everything said. I love all the 78' solo albums and I think it was brilliant to put these out. I think I'll put Peters record on the turntable right now! Take Care Brant
I'm okay with you agreeing and disagreeing as long as you are watching and enjoying. Hope you are well man. I need you and James and Heim in a video again soon. Been too long
With Peter being the ballad guy, getting all the girls attention, was it the start of Paul's dislike for him?? Marina del Ray, by the way, a dangerous place for drummers!!! Peter's car accident, 1977 and then only a few years later, 1983 Dennis Wilson drowned in Marina Del Ray, SOOO EERIE!!!
I’ve been a musician for 55 years. Peter’s record is better in my opinion that the rest. Paul’s was a KISS remake and Ace’s were rockin, Genes is what ?? Peter showed MUCH more versatility by his choice of tunes.
Love Gun is almost a perfect except for Then She Kissed Me. I like it ok, but it was just a lame way to end an album and if you’re gonna cover a song, why choose that one 🤷♂️
Terrible album when it came out. But when I turned 40, it clicked with me. Not very KISS. But probably the solo album I listen to most now. At the time, I’d rank them Paul, Ace, Gene, Peter. Now? Peter, Ace, Paul, Gene. They all have amazing moments tho. Ace’s is definitely the most consistent. Paul the most KISS, Gene the most variety, and Peter’s the most soul and sincerity. Plus his voice is fantastic.
The only thing "wrong" with Peter's album is that it wasn't a big, bombastic KISS rock record. But that doesn't make it wrong or bad, just different. Peter embraced his R&B roots on this record, which is why KISS fans didn't like it and considered it the "weakest" of the four. Most if not all of the songs predated KISS when Peter played in the bands Chelsea, but especially Lips with guitarist and longtime collaborator Stan Penridge. I agree with another commenter who said that he preferred Peter's album over Gene's, which had it's good moments, but was kind of off the wall ; especially with the addition of "When You Wish Upon A Star", which was a head-scratcher and cringe-inducing. But, gotta love Gene for having the cajones to sing it!
