The Michael Shermer Show # 441
Michelle Dowd was born into an ultra-religious cult, “The Field,” started in the 1930s by her grandfather, who convinced generations of young male followers that he would live five hundred years and ascend to the heavens when doomsday came.
Michelle Dowd is a professor of journalism at Chaffey College and contributor to The New York Times, Alpinist, The Los Angeles Book Review, Catapult, OnlySky, and other national publications. She founded The Chaffey Review, an award-winning literary journal, advises student media, teaches poetry and critical thinking in the California State prisons, and has been recognized as a Longreads Top 5 for The Thing with Feathers, on the relationship between environmentalism and hope. Her memoir is Forager: Field Notes for Surviving a Family Cult.

Professor Rick B. Spence of Idaho U. has done a Great Courses in History series on cults and secret societies that is simply masterful. So many things people don't understand about these groups... he gives excellent perspective on the subject. I think he'd be a great interview for you and your audience.

Scary and informative. Great to see how far she has come and hopefully this should be inspiration to others.

So many cult stories! They never cease to amaze. Looking forward to part two of her story.

Is not being addressed. For example take Plato's Cave. Someone is showing you a shadow and calls it an equilateral triangle. But you turn around and see what they are actully showing you is a scalene triangle manipulated in such a way through clever parlor tricks to APPEAR as a equilateral triangle. Now if you go up this person who still believes scalene triangles are equilateral triangles. And show them an Isoceles Triangle. And ask them to change? They're not going to because you have not addressed the underlying rational logic of what a equilateral triangle is.

Right off the bat with that brief but informative topic description I can see that this "cult" as it's called was another of the many, many groups that formed and were then called cults because they didn't form as part of one of the mainstream religious cultures or the new age spiritual movements/groups. For example, one thing that sets Heaven's Gate "cult" from all the others and the religions is their membership have to be aware enough to know that both male and female vehicles were equal, so one wouldn't attract one exclusive of the other. The other point was that it would seem this person's grandfather was being influenced perhaps by a space alien soul because of his putting a specific time frame for how long he would live, his body I suppose which no humans can say and even the space aliens probably don't know for sure with their hybrid physical bodies. Also another sign of his being influenced by a space alien soul or by another human is his saying when he ascends will be like a marker of when Doomsday would come. Doomsday was never meant to be a specific day until it was, like when the true Members from the Level Above human, who evidence having created the earth and all it's lifeforms left their incarnations, that marked the beginning of the period of time that would become the judgement time or judgement hour or judgement "day" and that the doom part is what DO called the recycling to clean up the planet to potentially start a new civilization upon.

Why don’t these writers do deep dives in far-left progressive spaces like ANTIFA, trans-lobbies, 3rd wave feminist groups? Just once per scribe, journalists or essayist? :)
