Why doesn’t this have more views? This sums up the entire experience that took me 10+ years to figure out.

Thank you for sharing, as a First year PhD student I appreciate some "real talk" about the future job prospects and that I should maybe consider more seriously the Alt AC. Carreer track.

Absolutely and thank you for watching!

@@UXmatt I know this is probably counter-intuitive because of where you are, but do you have any references for how to improve one's chances when transitioning into an alt. ac. career after the PhD? (of course completely understandable if you don't)

You did all of this with a 4:4 teaching load?! I'm impressed!

Yup. Sometimes my 4th was advising/managing a few grad student research thesis/projects. I was very burnout by it all.

Glad (?) to hear that my experience is similar. Such a traumatic experience.

Good for you, and congratulations! I enjoy your videos and they have given me some ideas for classes, so thanks for that. I wonder if leaving a tenure track job might have been a factor in all this. I know having been on some committees that we get a candidate like that, it raises questions - but since we're not allowed to ask, it does give people some pause.

Thank you, thank you for making this! I'm in the middle of the second year of my job search and can't tell you how much your video helped me feel less like I was doing it all wrong and more like, well, this is just the way it is. Looking forward to your next one on this!

I am so sorry that I hadn't replied to your comment until now. It's been a kind of brutal and depressing week on my end. First off, thank you. Second, yeah...I feel like the academic job market is completely messed up. If you've never explored the Professor Is Out on Facebook, it might be helpful. Also, also, if depending on your field of study, interests, and experience, you might look into UX research or UX design jobs. Folks with mixed-methods experience or ethnographic backgrounds seem to be able to finding good, well-paying jobs (much better paying than most of academia).

@@UXmatt I'm sorry to hear you are having such a horrible time. I hope that knowing your videos have been comforting to me during the toughest period of my academic journey can bring some solace to your situation. Thank you for your generous advice, and for letting us all in into your wonderful classes and into that very intimate slice of your personal life. Best regards from the borderlands of Southern Texas.

You spent 30 to 40 hours per week for three years just on applications? That's a full time job itself.

Yup, it was exhausting (and for a meager salary and I couldn't choose where we lived...had to follow the job). I left academia and life's been a LOT better.

Do a video about the impending “demographic cliff” of there being fewer and fewer undergrads enrolling across the nation, and what it means for currently enrolled grad students or to-be professors in terms of job prospects. Sorry that’s a huge topic I know but I’d love to get your take on this at least.

Good video and good points. On the market right now myself (I luckily landed a pretty well paying postdoc that is a behavioral science/humanities postdoc, so I'm lucky) and was totally in the dumps becuse I've (so far) appried to six positions. I've heard back from 4 of them (all 'no'), but I guess hearing back from 4 out of 6 is pretty..good. Also to note the market is BACKED UP right now. I'm a "pandemic PhD' meaning someone who actually earned their doctorate in 2020, when the market, as you pointed out was absolutely nothing. So, now as the market is "better", there's an even more solidified glut of people applying. Of the four jobs I've heard back from, EVERY one indicated they've recieved over 150-250 applications: every. one. (And some were in very niche disciplines where they were expecting *nowhere* near 200 applications) What I take from this is I need to up my application game. I was hoping to apply for 15-20 jobs this semester, but I probably need to triple that!

Thank you for watching and your comment. Yeah, that market is super backed up right now + there's a huge shift in academic/public sentiment. Lots and lots of folks are shifting out of academia and into careers in industry (oftentimes making far more money and with more rigid M-F work schedules). Anyway, I'm sending all the positive vibes I can muster your way. Good luck!

You would absolutely HATE the airline pilot business. 99.9% rejection rate with occasional market corrections.
