What It's Like To Dock A Super Yacht In Capri

Once again, a tremendous look inside the operations of a superyacht. Great stuff.

Can I make a suggestion? Whenever you pull into a new port, can you take a moment and show us the scenery. Doesn't have to be much, but just seeing the area you parked the AWOL in would be great. You keep pulling into these beautiful port's but we never see them. This one you said you left Naples and I was dang, I wanted to see Naples. 😃

I find it interesting the number of small boats that are kind of darting to and fro around the entrance. They must think that these large yachts can stop or manuveur like they do. I compare it to when I have a load of 350+ bales of hay (about24,000 lbs) on my trailer and someone will pull out in front of me and think that I can instantly slow down or stop.

The talent and patience it takes is just mind blowing. I love these videos. Thank you so much!

Capri is an organized mess just like Naples. You have to live it to understand it, something difficult for an outsider. The tight harbour does not help, cause I would think that for example St. Tropez or Monaco during the Grand Prix are just as busy

Would love to see how it all works when docking in windy conditions.

Having spent five years sailing around the world in the Royal Navy (ex) I have seen loads of ports, but never one as chaotic as that! Great precision under lots of stress 👏👏

It's probably hight season and Capri ( you read it Cápri and not Caprí ) as many little other island , Capri has lot of nice little boat . Dock your giant yacht in Napoli port and get a little nice boat to visit the island ... !!!

Got to admit I was expecting a cameo from a seagull

In that part of Italy they sail the boats same as they drive cars on the roads 😂 Giving-way cars always try to pass ahead of you, during the traffic jam they use to fit in order to get ahead of the others, people thinking they're the only one on the road... and they pretend to be right! No patient at all, same as in this vid, this one make me laugh but I shiver at the same time, thinking of the captain having that amount of responsibility.. and finger crossed also for the ferry captain. I'm working in the merchant navy and seeing this situations is very frustrating 🤦‍♂️ Anyway, great vlog as always Capt. Tristan, so much interesting, wishing you will continue with this technical/operational format.. sometimes I miss the onboard life and your videos bring me back there! Little pronunciation tip, as italian: Capri has the accent on the "a", so it becomes Càpri 😁

A huge thank you for sharing your experiences 🙏 It really does help..well it helps me as a novice in the boat world. I started on a Windy GM37 and as you said in a previous video... try to dock without using the bow thruster and that is such a buzz when one has cracked the code of docking by using the engines only. Once again keep the excellent videos coming 👍😉🙏😊

I remember docking there about 10 years ago in October in a 125' Sailing yacht. If I remember correctly it was $2000 per night. I thought that was a bit much for October. What was the daily rate for your yacht in the high season.

As a former Seafarer, I have to say nice piece of ship handling. The yachts and location look fantastic, but the berthing arrangements just don’t look user friendly.

nice mooring, captain! Capri, as you said, is super busy (and super expensive), and super confusing with ferries, day motoring yachts etc.. all moving in and out. We were moored at the entrance, on the visitors' dock, with a 40 ft sailing yacht and tossed around day and night by the incoming and leaving ferries.

Missed your vids Tristan. It's so enriching to see a pro at work. And your friendliness shine through which makes it even more enjoyable.

Tristan:- Have you ever thought that cameras around the bigger boats would be useful for the Captain when docking in tight spaces? Pretty much like cameras in cars; They give the driver a view which is impossible to see from their physical position whilst parking.

Great video about the techniques involved. But here I was thinking that docking at the Port of Capri isn't as stressful as taking a taxi ride from the Port up to Ana Capri. It was a long time ago and my toes are still curled.

Have tried to follow your vlogs in some sort of sequential order but to no avail. I'm tired of having 111 followed by 114. What, you can't count? Besides, you never give any input if a person asks for some explanation. In my opinion that means it is beyond you to respond to the "plebs" who, without a doubt, are not up to your "high standards". And since your response is not tied to You Tube money in the end it's all about "thumbs up" money.

Great Video, but every time you say "Capriii" I have to shiver due to the wrong pronunciation. It is "Caaapri" in Italian and also in other languages surrounding this beautiful country. Would be great if we all could educate the people on the right pronunciation of famous cities and names - to break this misunderstanding. ;) As a German and Italian we have to deal it a lot. At least you don't have to deal with idiots at the boat ramp. People that can't back the trailer into the water, can't get their boat to the dock to pick people up. Wide open throttle in the wake less zone. Rude people are everywhere when it comes to boating. Last year I was trying to pick up my buddy on a 200 foot long dock and there was a guy that couldn't figure out how to compensate for the wind so he would start at one end of the dock get blown to the other end and not one of the 3 other people in the boat could grab a line and help nor could the 4 people on shore. He got mad because I finally got sick of him hogging up the entire dock and just went up and got my buddy who grabbed my boat when I got close to the dock so the wind didn't blow me off. It's a boat, it doesn't have park.

Love your slow smoth driving. Have you done a video about normal cursing and how you get the boat started and what checks you do before you chart a course and leave the harbour. I think that would be interesting.

I always look with concern at the other boats anchor lines and the draft of the vessels. I wonder what the clearance is between the props and the anchor lines.

AWOL is NOT a Super Yacht...it is a Yacht.. AWOL is built by SanLorenzo....and they define her as yacht.. A Super Yacht as per SanLorenzo is built of Alloy or steel and not FRP....also at 37 metres, SanLorenzo does not consider AWOL to be a Super Yacht.. this is like saying you are the Captain on an Airbus A380 when you are piloting an Airbus A330.

Hey Tristan. I have a question not related to this video but I don't know where else can I ask you. What is life like for both guests and crew while sailing from one location to another? I've looked at some sites that allow you to calculate distance between ports and I see it can take several days to get to some points. What does everybody do on board? I ask because I've seen you cover most (if not all) the seating areas and eating wouldn't be so fun if the wind picks up. For example, from Naples to any port north of the isles in Croatia can take up to 3 days. Or maybe is that something you advice the customers against doing and just stay in the same area? Thanks in advance!
