This is a frustrating video - it more or less treats smell and taste disorders as one thing, which isn't very informative (or accurate). I have anosmia (no smell), and while that's related to taste disorders, you don't learn a lot by lumping them all together for the sake of a 1:50 video. It's like doing a broad video about missing limbs, and inferring that people with no hands have difficulty walking.

I have a weird thing going for me, I never was able to smell for as long I remember. So I assume I was born without it but I can taste but I'm also not sure how well my taste is because smell is an huge part of your taste. If you put an blind fold on me and have me eat certain stuff I can tell you what they are but smell certain stuff I would have no clue.

Me and my father are the only people in this world that I know of that can't smell anything at all. We can both taste, but obviously its heavily effected. But him as 45 year old and me as 19 year old have both gone our entire lives without smelling anything once. Everywhere I go it comes up and its basically the one thing that people can remember me by lol.

For me, I can’t smell or taste things very well unless it’s very concentrated or powerful right in my nose or mouth, like putting a crazy amount of salt on things and only smelling perfume if it’s right inside my nose. It doesn’t bother me much, but I will never totally experience what other people experience because it’s all just air to me

I have a terrible sense of smell and I can't taste things the same way as others can. It's frustrating because I need a lot of flavor before I can taste food. I put massive amounts of hot sauce on burritos, garlic in pasta, things like that. I only use 3/4 the sugar and water in Kool-Aid too because otherwise it tastes like that flavored water crap. It's hard to explain to people who don't have the problem but it does kimd of suck.

It's weird..but I have an extraordinary sense of hearing and I almost have perfect pitch. But my sense of smell is like 10 - 20% effective compared to a "normal" person.

My mom's friend got in an accident and the way her head was hit , the nerve damage to the brain caused her not able to taste or smell . She was in ICU for a few weeks but thankfully she has gotten better. This happened about 4 years ago but she got really depressed , but she's better now :) she says she enjoys very crunchy foods like lettuce and likes to eat really spicy things . Downside to it is that she can't smell gas leaks or anything so there's a lot of sensors and alarms she has to put in her home where as if you could normally smell you wouldn't necessarily need.

Lost my sense of smell and taste on Thursday. Felt sick on Monday. Tested positive for Covid Saturday morning. I hope it comes back.

Not to split hairs, but those people couldn't smell. Taste just refers to what the tongue senses (sweet, salty, savory, etc.). If meat tastes like salty leather, you can taste, but not smell.

Uh, yeah, I lost my sense of smell from a cold for like a week. It was the most miserable week of my life, and I'm certainly no "foodie". I think we take taste for granted sometimes.

I got shot in the head and my sense of taste and smell was noticeably altered and it's weird because I remember what things used to smell and taste like but I can't quite put my finger on it anymore.

I had a friend in college who couldn't smell, and yeah, it eventually led to some major health problems because he wasn't eating properly.

I felt this before. When I was like really sick, I lost my sense of taste and smell It sucked but I didn't know I lost my smell yet but I knew about the taste because everything I ate, tasted like nothing. Which made it taste horrible. And the way I noticed my smell was gone was when I got it back.

my grandmother had taste and smell but due to cancer and cancer treatment she lost it along with her voice. she regardless of her alzheimer's remembers the taste and smell of food when she eats something but if i put a new food in front of her she has no clue. its curious how memory can play a part in taste and smell

I lost my sense of taste for anything except fresh fruit and vegetables during the 1st trimester of my pregnancy (most likely due to hormonal changes), and all the things I used to love (meat, fish, cheese) suddenly tasted like cardboard or indeed flavorless leather. It was the weirdest feeling in the world, I couldn't eat anything...

I can't smell, but it doesn't really bother me. The only annoying part for me is acting like I actually care when someone farts, or "do you smell that too?"

Tofu does have a distinct taste and smell (hint: it's similar to soy milk, the starting material for tofu). The problem is people generally buy the cheap stuff. It's like how people think soy sauce is just salty black liquid, when they have never had the real stuff.

I have no sense of smell and my parent don't believe me they shrug it off and laugh lol... Cause nobody else in their family are like that... And I'm allergic to spoiled food/mold so everytime before I eat, I double checked it by looks and taste and I'll asked my parents to smell them for me like "is this spoiled/rotten? Just to be sure" they smell it for me cause they know I have allergies... But sometimes they don't so I don't eat it cause i don't wanna risk it... I don't wanna feel itchy lol

My mom can taste but can’t smell. Cooking is weird for her. I have a weird thing where instead of noticing an unusual smell I notice an unusual taste.

I'm having a real hard time with this. After a bad bout of tonsillitis I haven't been able to taste food in a week. My appetite is zero. Eating takes willpower. I'm dropping weight and my doctors just repeat themselves, gotta force myself. You never expect something like this to be so debilitating.

Thinking about it I would want to see how it's like losing my sense of taste. It'll probably make it easier to maintain a healthy diet

Anosmia (lack of a sense of smell) can also be congenital, meaning some people are born with it. I am one of those :)

I have no sense of smell but I have a sense of taste. Everybody questions if I can taste as well, I can. Judging by that question I'm guessing that it may mean that Cheesecake tastes even better than it already does, which I'm jealous of.

Is it just me that thinks that 10-15 million sounds like WAY to high of a number out of 300 million? If that really was the case I would've met someone like this but I haven't. I think those numbers are overestimated

I'm here right now because apparently I have severe colds and I can't smell anything. I don't know if it's temporary but I've had worse colds before and none of which resulted in anosmia.

Hey, I also have the "problem"of not being able to smell anything, even though it's not really a problem to me, since I don't know what it's like to smell things, so that is not something I miss... But I noticed that I put a lot more salt into my food, than other people do, so maybe it has something to do with that, since salt is a natural flavor enhancer... Honestly I don't know a lot about it, because the doctors I went to, could not tell me, what I have so I just accepted it (even though I live in Germany and in my opinion the doctors should know about it). But I'm very glad I've found this video and that I'm not the only person "suffering" from this... p.s. I don't know if it's the same for you, but I can "sense" fire if it's a bigger fire, but not if I burn something in the kitchen or something... So I wouldn't say, that I can smell it, because to me it feels like the air is just different, if I'm near to a campfire or something. Also I can "sense" nail polish because it sort of "burns" in my nose but I can't tell if I can smell it. So if you have the same or a similar "problem" it would be interesting to know, since the doctors here can't tell me anything about it...

My sister's S/O has no sense of smell, so everything just tastes really bland to him. For them at least, it's not terrrible, it just means my sister can make whatever she wants to eat and he won't mind because no flavor will be too strong for him.

I have allergies and my nose is always a little stuffy. I can sense about 60% of what normal people do, the smell has to be strong for me to sense it. Taste is a bit better, subtle flavours are hard to detect, but overall my taste is ok. But when I have a cold I can't taste or smell.

When have really bad nasal congestion like allergy, I go nose blind for a night or couple of days. It's the worst.

I know I'm picking on a detail, but unseasoned tofu doesn't have less taste than unseasoned meat. Tofu is delicious if you season it well, just like meat.

i know 2 people with taste/smell disorders. 1 is a schoolmate who has no sense of smell because he went around sniffing weird stuff like pepper and ground up aspartame tho his taste is still ok, mostly. the other has no sense of taste, tho he can somewhat smell, and from what i hear it's a side effect of his diabetes, a lot of things are unpleasant for him to eat as he only gets the texture, and a little of be base taste, like he knows if something is sweet, but that's about it, complex flavours are out of his reach.

I have anosmia. And (as far as I know) I still taste normally. I also ate sour milk with my cereal once. It tasted kinda sour, but not sour enough for me to not eat it . . . which was kind of stupid.
