One of my most memorable skydives was a demonstration jump, landing next to MDW. I exited a C182 and opened at 4000' agl. Looking down, I noticed around 6 SW Airlines 737's holding short of runway 31C. Knowing they where waiting for me, I took my time landing. Welcome to Chicago Steveo!

3:35 Grissom was actually called Bunker Hill Naval Station before it became Grissom Air Force Base in 1968. It was named after astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom, an Indiana native, who perished during a fire in the Apollo capsule at Cape Kennedy, FL, in 1967. It is now called Grissom Air Force Reserve Base, which hosts the 434th Air Refueling Wing, and it continues its mission of air refueling operations. It is home to the largest KC-135R Stratotanker wing in the Air Force Reserve Command. My dad finished out the last few years of his 20 year career as a crew chief mechanic for the Air Force at this base.

I was attending a week long seminar at Chicago Booth . I made the return trip solo IFR talking to the spirit of my father frequently along the way home .

Check out GYY sometime. They’ll pull a black car plane-side for your client and you’ll be downtown super fast with the tollway. Also the cheapest C.A.A. fuel and reasonable ramp fees. If only they would rename the airport Chicago Executive South Airport.

Grew up not too far from Midway, as good Catholic boys my brother and I would ditch church on Sundays and grab some White Castles and hang out watching planes in a lot they used to have on the SE corner of the airport. Got to land there once when I was working on my private with my instructor in a 172, that was pretty cool!

1952 we visited Chicago to see my uncle off to the Korean Conflict. I still have a very vivid picture in my mind of the beautiful TWA Connie. At 5-years old and everything being so different - walked to the plane - that Connie appeared to be only a couple hundred feet from me. Gawd! What a beautiful aircraft that was.

My Dad used to work for Montgomery Wards, and took the corporate aircraft all the time. He wanted to fly fighters but his eyesight wasn't at minimums and that meant no WWII ace in the family (yeah, right...). So in corporate life, he befriended the pilots. Wards owned two planes - a Grumman Turbo Prop and one of the first jets (GII, I think, at the time). His pilot buddy said of the Turbo Prop that it climbed and handled like a fighter. They were based out of KORD (O' Hare - Butch's field), at Butler Aviation. I used to take him there all the time when he was traveling. Memories...

Fantastic footage Steveo, loved the "best forward speed" moment. Reminded me of speaking to a pilot years ago about their approach to Heathrow in a Piper Seneca (she was pilot of Capital Radios Flying Eye). I believe the city you flew over at 3:49 is my home town of Logansport, IN (KGGP). We have two rivers - the Wabash flows through east to west and the Eel river joins the Wabash from the northeast right in our town. You mentioned "Grissom"; that is a nearby Air Force Reserve base which has a radar approach control facility. Grissom handles lower altitude civilian traffic - I believe 10K and below.

I used to rent out of Midway before 911. Afterwards they moved the FBO off the airport, they tossed you the keys, drive back to the airport, park and go through security. Then a guy in a golf cart takes you to the plane. Very inconvenient. Anyway I was more nervous taxing as it is a mouse maze of taxiways. Kinda neat to do an approach and waving at passengers in a DC9 on a parallel runway. They always passed me for some reason.

Interesting. You didn't miss a beat with the late shift from 22L to 22R. No thought of putting the new approach in the GPS? I was surprised they asked you about parking on the approach, that's a high workload part of the flight, wouldn't earlier or later (on the ground) have been better for you? Or is it a function of Chicago being geared to bigger commercial traffic?

Oh well, maybe one day it'll get cleaned up there. edit: Funny, at the end there it looked like the marshal wanted you to move forward some more, he saw you hit parking brakes and just tossed his hands up.. haha oh well!
