Swiftwater rescue trainees learn how to survive a scenario where a raft flips over in the middle of a raging river. Insider joined a group training on the Colorado River near Moab, UT. The scenario begins with participants simulating a scenario with an overturned raft. They must then use a combination of their paddle and the raft's grab rope to flip the raft over, before assessing other dangerous elements that threaten the safety of the rafters.

On most rivers where you're guided + life jacket, just keep your feet up and chill.

Legs pointing down the river to kick and rocks away, arms out. When you see the throw line grab it, put it over your shoulder, lie on it and kick like mad. Look at 2:23, but just have your arms out :)
@aaizner847
@aaizner847 4 дня назад
@@sab1163 not really. you can drown in moving water while wearing a life jacket - foot entrapment (aka face flood), getting pinned in a strainer, sucked into an undercut, then there's always the classic "head against a rock". the river doesn't run out of ways to kill ppl.

@Savage Rice Cake I wish it was like that! The only time a restaurant will cover any amount of money is if you didn’t make enough to cover minimum wage $7.25/hr they’ll pay you the difference. But any money on your check from the $2.63/hr you won’t see. It’ll cover your taxes so whatever you make in tips minus paying out the bar and bus boy is what you keep.

@@skyscraping3673 minimum wage federal is $7.25/hr for servers or tipped employees is $2.53 which you see none of. You keep the tips and the 2.53hr covers taxes. I live in MA so our minimum wage is $12/hr and for servers/tipped employees it's $2.75/hr

Getting dumped by a raft flip can suck a lot. I was doing the Upper Gauley in West Virginia and we got to the infamous Pillow Rock. We had too much speed and ramped up the rock, the strong current caught the back edge of the raft and instantly we were all on the water. As I was trying to figure out which way was up, I felt someone kick the top of my helmet, pushing me further under water. I was so confused which was way up due to the aerated water, and I finally surfaced just seconds before I took a breath of water and drown. It was one of the scariest moments of my life.
@aaizner847
@aaizner847 4 дня назад
you didn't "ramp up the rock" due to the speed. you ran onto a rock and got (what's called) high-sided. like you said, it was the water pushing the back of the boat that drove your raft up the rock. your guide likely yelled "high-side", but by that point it was probably too late.

as a raft guide myself although sometimes the water doesn't look that bad its the underneath that's really dangerous, although yes this is a bit overstated in this video. Id also like to say that as a guide you must be able to flip a raft back on your own and get clients all back in within 2 minutes to pass. these guys using 4 or 5 just to flip are pretty bad....

This video reminded me of the moment when i went rafting with my cousin's, as we were in the water the currents got stronger and little bit of water was coming in the raft, when we got a bit further my cousin's mother got her camera out of her bag my cousin's told her to put the camera back as it was new and it would be ruined, when she was putting the camera back she opened her bag and at least a good amount of mony fell in the water it was 10,000 PKR which was near to 100$ of that time i leaned and was able to get 500PKR and my cousin also and the rest money was lost in the water.

I used to be a raft guide, flipping a boat is a 1 person job. If a raft guide cant filp the boat on their own they shouldn't be a raft guide. Practice 10 times and it is easy. You can even do it without getting on top of the boat with like 3 people. If it is a gear boat different story but this just makes it look way more intense than it is......usual BS.
@dotcassilles1488
@dotcassilles1488 3 года назад
Start small by learning the skill then work up to a one person flip. They did say it was a beginner course. Once you have the skill and can do it automatically by yourself while trying to keep everyone from panicking then you arent likely to forget how to do it.

Flipping the raft either way is good practice. Its the same technique to both flip it upside down and the right way up. You need to have practiced enough that it becomes an automatic response, so that you can then deal with the people you are guiding, to get them back in the raft safely. Like a fire drill at a school or business, it needs to be practised in less stressful conditions (not in actual emergency conditions) for you to remember and apply it in the more stressful conditions. Stress makes you stupid so you first need to learn the technique when you arent stressed.

Holy over dramatization batman! Watching this you'd be fooled into thinking this was some extreme and heroic life or death situation. In reality whitewater rafts flip all the time, and it's no big deal, just adds to the fun. And it's stupid easy to right them. A decent guide could flip a raft back over, by themselves, before any of their passengers even knew what was happening.
