What would it be like to live on the Death Star? How many people lived on this massive station? And just how big was it really? We take a look at the Death Star as well as the history behind it all the way from Rogue One to the final days of this super weapon. Would you have survived your time on the Death Star? They did. Vader's personal guards were clonetroops of the 501st in stormtrooper armor and many of the first stormtroopers were actually clones tha had their armor replaced.

I wonder if at least half of the cooks and janitors were droids since the cost of employing such a massive crew would be incredibly steep. I would definitely be using as many droids as possible to cut costs so I can focus on making sure the weapons sector is running in top condition. Makes me wonder if Darth Vader had to have absolutely sterling credit scores and several no-limit "black edition" credit cards! LOL. That does make me wonder: has Amex or Visa ever released a Darth Vader edition card?

And also, (minor spoiler!) one stormtrooper (Finn) deserted them because he was partly upset that a friend died in combat and was shocked that he was expected to gun down innocent villagers without hesitation. Just because their bosses ruled with an iron fist doesn't always mean they were able to keep human contact nonexistent.

If you want to know what life was REALLY like on the Death Star, read the new Novel "Lost Stars" by Claudia Grey. It follows a small group of Imperial characters, and includes Chapters in which they are living on the Death Star. I can tell you that there were many people on board the Death Star who actually had no idea about the Superweapon! When Alderaan was destroyed, many Imperials tried to find ways to escape the Death Star, believing that the Empire had committed an act of terror. Many of these innocent people were not able to escape before the Death Star's destruction!

And I wouldn't want to work in the sanitation dept! Remember when Hans, Luke and Leia fell into the trash compactor? It was filled with absolutely filthy water. Ugh, I wouldn't touch that unless they pay me a STEEP salary. But then, the cafeteria would be just as scary. What happens if Vader is in line and thinks the chef overcooked his lunch? Damn, there won't be a meeting in his office. He'll just casually murder you using the Force and there's already 15 people in the employment line to replace you! And no way in hell would I want to serve the Emperor's lunch! Too dangerous...

Well the droids would serve the masses with maybe some pretty ladies to perk up morale serving while the chefs would make food for the officers and likely special sorts like the Emperor would get his own elite kitchen staff to tend his refined needs. And Vader was not a monsters those who served well got treated well a bad dish well killing the chef might be a bit much but what are the odds such a dignitary would not have his own chef and cooks etc.

The Empire had millions of troops, super high tech gear, a fucking planet destroyer the size of a sun, 2 ruthless rulers and tons of other generals/admirals. And they lost to the Rebels, mostly a bunch of rag tag foot soldiers with much less effective ships and weaponry. That's always bothered me about Star Wars.

+martyn_1 Well a massacre suggests dozens or hundreds of deaths. A genocide suggests hundreds of thousands to millions of deaths. To Luke's credit the station was responsible for the death of billions but in exchange not all the crew were evil.

it was so stupid how the first death star were destroyed. I mean its a marvel already how an entire moon size battlestation has only 1 exhaust port but also the size of a wombat (or rat im guessing in our terms), also that the missile Luke fires can turn 90 degrees, and go down it which doesn't explode from the tremendous amount of heat coming from that exhaust port or even be pushed out by the exhaust being ejected. Sure there is the force and all but Luke was not as strong then and no way could he have encased the missile in a force shield for so long and for so far away and maintain it. This was before Dagoba so he couldn't even lift an X wing yet. In real life, even if Luke made the shot, the missile would have exploded prematurely and the station would only get a scratch at most.

Christian Quiles yea, but its also effected by distance. The death star explodes after luke is already flying away. He would have to be concentrating the entire time and you clearly see him celebrating when the missile goes in, thus loses the concentration. Plus, he is still so inexperienced in the force. His feat can only be accomplished by a Jedi Master and Luke clearly isn't that good yet.

It takes more than a million people to operate the Death Star and there is room for over a billion people on board. There are always at least 1,161,293 Imperials stationed on the Death Star at any given time. The standard complement of personnel includes: 265,675 Station crew 52,276 gunners 607,360 troops 25,984 Stormtroopers 42,782 ship support staff and 167,216 pilots and support crew.

Building Death Stars cost money. Stormtroopers would probably be paying out their collective asses in rent, so who would be tasked to collect the rent? The size of the DS makes its destruction even more stupid. That is the only thing I never liked about episode 4. The rebels attacked it with only 2-3 squadrons of fighters and bombers. The DS had thousands of fighters on it + the size of it allows it to even house an internal shipyard. However the empire just launched about the same number of fighters to fight them off. If I was the commander of it , I would of scrambled at least a 1/4 of all my fighters to keep them from even closing the DS. With the amount of fighters they had , the rebels should had to fight at least 50:1 ratio , instead ....

mowtow90 Actually, it was arrogance that allowed the Rebel strike force to get so close. The turbolaser operators would have known that they couldn't handle small and manueverable spacecraft. Some TIEs should have been on CAP already and reinforced as soon as the Rebels were detected by sensors. Then more TIEs are launched to overwhelm the Rebels. The Rebels should have been completely destroyed. Tarkin's arrogance apparently had filtered down to the lower ranked commanders. Darth Vader (an accomplished fighter pilot himself) had to order the fighters out and even he couldn't get more fighters launched. Once the Imperials had figured out what the Rebels were after, they should have launched several squadrons of TIEs just to guard the exhaust port and the trench.

mowtow90 Had the Imperials used the same procedures the US navy uses to defend an aircraft carrier, the Death Star would still be around blowing planets up left and right. There would have been no sequels as well.

There weren’t millions of imperials on Death Star 1. It was about 800,000 at the time of destruction. In total it was about 1.3 million dead between both Death Stars destruction. And this is spelled out in the manuals. - also the maker of this video says this fact in another one of his own videos.
