‪During a radio interview, John Lennon spoke about how he ‘digs’ the #SexPistols and how they reminded him of The Beatles before Brian Epstein came along and - “told us to stop throwing up and sleeping on stage and swearing.” #sidvicious #Blondie #B52s #Madness #ThePretenders #Lennon‬

Great!! John Lennon at the beatles was really living the Punk styyle in Hamburgo. That is reason why he was the Kurt Cobain Idol.

The Beatles basically were the punk rock of their day along with the rolling stones

Not really, love me do and Penny Lane are hardly punk of any day, but I get what you're trying to say, they had a little of that but it was more rebellious of itself through artist expression rather then against anything in particular.

@@pauljones8801 Was The Ramones doing, "I Wanna be Your Boyfriend" particularly punk? Love Me Do was 63, Penny Lane 67. I guess Mango Man is referring to their pre-Epstein Hamburg days before, as John says, Epstein clean them up, & during which they were more punk than most 70s punk bands. During their black leather phase, they certainly had the look down. Interesting direction lineage from the Rockers of "Mods & Rockers", to punk rockers. Or, as Ringo said, "Mockers". However, wasn't Hippy & Psychedelia really the Punk of their day though, i.e. the disruptive, establish challenging, moral outraging thing etc etc? A lot of really good talent was mainstreamed by Tin Pan Alley, e.g. imagine if Lulu had stuck with her original band & not gone off with Marion Massey to learn to talk posh & do cruises. I'd have included her early teenage stuff in proto-punk.

I wish John L had met John L, I'm sure they'd have got on well. Similarly honest and controversial thinkers, unphased by confrontation. Both funny. When you think about it, punk was more about attitude, energy, an amateurish, immediate DIY approach to getting up on stage and letting off steam. Not much to do with talent. That's an apt definition of skiffle really, which was punk two decades early. and that's where Lennon came in. I always wanted The Pistols to cover "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey". That's a brilliant slab of proto-punk, that is. Lydon sings Lennon!

I think he would love to hang out with Kurt and the band, but i think he would overlook the Seattle scene, and see them like an american version of punk.

I think John would've loved Kurt and Nirvana. Kurt certainly loved John. I saw Butch Vig talking about producing Nevermind and he said he wanted Kurt to double track (record his vocals twice) as it gives a richer sound but Kurt didn't want to. Butch said that to get Kurt to change his mind he told him that John Lennon used to double track and that was it, as far as Kurt was concerned if it was good enough for Lennon it was good enough for him. 😎✌️

Punk rock was a reaction to the mid seventys super stale. glam. prog. and soft rock period. The kids had enough simple.

That, I humbly submit was more an attitude amongst certain hacks in the music press than amongst the bands. Some went along with the bs for easiness' sake. Read the playlist for the show Johnny Rotten did on Capital Radio in 1977 (which infuriated Malcolm McLaren as it blew holes in so much of the crap he was coming out with) wherein he chose, amongst much reggae, tracks by Tim Buckley, The Creation, Third Ear Band, Neil Young, Kevin Coyne, Lou Reed, Nico, Captain Beefheart, Can, and two by Peter Hammill. Read 'Anger Is An Energy' where Johnny talks about how he would go and see pretty much any band that played at the Rainbow in London, including the Grateful Dead in 1974 (although he didn't enjoy that one at all). Sticking to the 'Rotten' circle, Keith Levine of PIL's guitar hero was Steve Howe of Yes (have a listen to Poptones, and compare the guitar figure there to the opening of Starship Trooper. To my ears the former resembles a twisted version of the latter). Punk may well have been a reaction against the California cocaine-fuelled scene of themed-70s, but in the UK at least it was as much a kick-back against the dismal state of society in general by young people who wanted to do things their way, not as told to by their' betters'.

Punk was actually not a reaction to Glam, but rather a natural congruent outgrowth of it. Like punk, Glam rock was basic rock'n'roll and put a lot of emphasis on physical image and stage presence and sexual ambiguity which hadn't happened much since the early days of Little Richard. Bands like New York Dolls and Hollywood Bratz were the bridgehead between the glam and punk movements.
