Wow, for a video that is almost 4 years old, it's still SO relevant on all fronts. Learned a lot from this video, ended up going with the Shure SM7db so that we don't need the Cloudlifter (though it sounds like if you have a decent audio interface, it'll solve the same problem). Noticed you're using a shotgun mic in your new studio setup, sound like that has replaced the Shure for you in your studio? But you need tons of sound proofing in your room if recording indoors. We can't do that in our current setup just yet, but like how it looks with no mic. Until we upgrade our studio though, will just be relying on the Shure! Thanks for this awesome video my friend!

Glad it helped, and yes having a more acoustically dead room helps with the boom. Shure Mic is great too!

I love your style, It's a little improvisational and goofy seeing you hunched up between the different stands trying to get to the camera mic. And yet you still do such an amazing job of showing how each microphone works and how they sound, which not a lot of other people do. It's like you understand that you have to actually use a microphone for the viewer to understand what it sounds like! Wow crazy right? a lot of people just talk about a mic without using it in the video so I really appreciate your effort and expertise. You've earned a sub.

This was great. I’m a music producer that’s getting into the video/interview/tutorial realm and have 2 shure sm7bs but I like the idea of not having a microphone in my shot. The rode ngt3 sounded pretty close to the sm7b as far as smoothness and bass on your voice. Thanks for putting all the time in for this comparison.

Javier Mercedes It’s amazing how helpful these types of review videos are and yours is practical with how you run thru these different mics. I am always left wondering the same question though... Even if it’s mostly Zoom/Teams/Skype video calls, would it be worth to spend money for equipment to have better sound (compared to our computer speakers or headphones)? For those of us working at a desk in an untreated room, what would you recommend that will work with the mic out of the frame?

I really loved the way this was shot and edited. I have a better idea of what to look for but now I'm feeling a little more intimidated because I love the sound of a Large Diaphragm Condenser but I hate that I would have to buy an additional device (Audio Interface/Recorder). I really appreciate the amount of information you put into this and the live demonstration really helped me understand.. lol proud of you ! Hope you go far in your endeavors! Thank you so much for doing this video! here are my thoughts on the different sound quality of the mics you've showcased: - Earpods: captures room sound which makes the voice sound thin and far away. Not good to bring too close either cos of the plosives. - Airpods: sounds like underwater 🤷‍♂️ but slightly louder. - Lav: better sounding and clearer but still captures some room sound. Also not sure if can connect to computer. - USB/XLR Dynamic: sounds like a radio DJ (might not be too natural sounding), and also the mic is super close to the mouth. - Large Diaphragm Condenser: sounded the best imo, downside is the mic has to be rather close (not as close as before), and being shown in the video. - SM7B: more bass to the sound. Not sure if it is more correct to your voice as i've not heard you in person before. And also since it's dynamic, again have to go super close to it. - VideoMic Pro+: good capture of sound, doesn't have the effect of someone speaking directly into your ears, and doesn't show up in video. Room sound not noticeable as compared to Lav. - VideoMicro: same as above, just less bassy and more crisp. Not sure which is closer to original sound. - Rode NTG3B: sounds like SM7B, but you don't see it on screen. Bassy and sounds like speaking close into your ears. Not sure if that's a good thing, i guess depends on application. Edit: Large Diaphragm Condenser and VideoMicro sounded about the same, and are the best sounding to me. But each have their own pros. (speaking from different directions for asmr? Vs not showing the mic) Let me know if you guys have different views about it 😬

@darrenc2370
@darrenc2370 2 года назад
@@JavierMercedes i forgot to note that the analysis was based on listening through my surround speakers. It might be because the bass is set too high that resulted in the observations. So these can be kinda skewed..
@darrenc2370
@darrenc2370 2 года назад
had another listen using headset and here's some difference in observations: - there is some background noise for VideoMic Pro+ & VideoMicro i think because of the distance, which required higher gain to pick up the voice. - i was wrong about Rode NTG3B. It sounded really clean, no plosive sounds caused by the breath hitting the mic. It's a warmer and richer sound compared to Large Diaphragm Condenser, probably a preferred sound for the listeners (can't comment whether it's closer to natural sound). This is definitely the effect that we see & hear from TV productions.

Thanks the lord for discovering your channel. I just recently started on RU-vid (currently at 33subs😂🤙🏼) and the audio is what keeps slapping me in the face. I figured out the optimal camera settings, lighting, angles, way of recording, still.learning premiero pro and even the ambient look of the room is not a shot too far but the audio keeps screwing me man. I jist went with a blue yeti but it either is poppy as heck or extremely soft and depressing sounding. I ordered a pop filter so we'll see how that goes. Also post processing in audicty just doesn't work for me man. Tomorrow I'm finally off from a 5 day, night full time physical night job and I'll binge watch your channel an doesn't from it. I want to make this youtube thing work só badly, I love making videos about a topic I'm passionate about.

Hey Javier, could I make a small safety suggestion? In the shot at 0:43, I see that you have your C-stand positioned in a way that you've got the lowest leg away from you. If you rotate it 120deg so you've got that tall leg in the frame-left position, and sandbag that, all the weight will be on the leg itself. With the sandbag resting on the floor, you're reducing the weight of the sand going into the C-stand, making it a little more tippy. Just my 2c. :)

One thing I'm really interested in that very few people seem to demonstrate: How good is a lav mic used on a stand in place of a USB / XLR mic? Most streamers have such a big mic in the shot, but why not just have a thin stick with a lav mic on the end like a 70s game show?
