And if they had brought the original extended universe to cinema, fans would have never stopped throwing money at them. Like, I'm not even upset with the newer takes. I just don't understand why we couldn't have gotten the Old Extended Universe while also adding new stories from different times and places in the same setting.

Nah, the Shadows of the Empire novel has some *serious* flaws. Horribly mischaracterized Leia, has the most boring writing for characters like Chewie and R2-D2, Dash Rendar is written as literally just the Better Han Solo, the main antagonist's biggest character trait is that he's a serial rapist. Severely overrated novel, and honestly pretty gross read. The game only has like two or three good levels, the rest have horrible, clunky controls. The platforming on the moving train? Beyond frustrating. At least the SotE comic following Boba Fett is alright, but it's really nothing special. The canon comics are much more enjoyable, in my experience. Showing how Luke came around to view his father with pity and compassion, why Luke didn't return to Yoda on Dagobah, and how Luke managed to grow over that time period. Also showing how the Rebellion pieced itself together after Hoth, something that old Legends sources didn't really focus on much. Lando's story arc in the canon comics is also stellar, and helps to truly differentiate him narratively from Han. Honestly, the only downside of the canon comics are the unfortunate crossover events that kept getting forced in and interrupting the main story arcs. We didn't need four different cross over events in that small one year time period. War of the Bounty Hunters alone was enough. Crimson Reign and Hidden Empire fine but went on too long, and Dark Droids was entirely unnecessary.

Shadows of the empire was written while Lucas was still in control over star wars and had final approval over all new content, soon my mind, that is actually part of accepted Canon, despite what Disney says!

It... Really doesn't? Have you read that book recently? It butchers Leia's character, with her spending like 90% of the book hopelessly pining over Han, Luke, and Xizor and acting like a standard damsel in distress. The author clearly had no idea how to write characters like R2-D2 or Chewie, so he completely robs them of any characterization and usually just writes "Chewie growled" or "Artoo beeped". Dash Rendar is written as the most "Better Han Solo" imaginable, with nothing to really distinguish him as his own character. And Xizor, the book's main villain, is a serial rapist. We really didn't need a serial rapist in a family-friendly setting like Star Wars. Hell, even the villain B-plot with Vader trying to figure out what Xizor's whole deal was is undermined by the author just straight up telling us everything about Xizor way too early, instead of us getting the story reveals at the same time as Vader, so there's zero dramatic tension there. Just a really bad book in general. If you're referring to the video game instead of the book, you might wanna take off your nostalgia goggles and try playing it again. The opening and ending levels are fun, sure, but most of the game controls horribly, and is borderline unplayable. The train platforming section is awful, the fight against IG-88 is needlessly difficult because the graphics are so bad you can barely *see* your opponent, flying around with the jetpack controls horribly. Overall just a severely overrated game propped up by two decent levels.

For every character and writing critique you issue, I seriously doubt you could produce anything nearly as fitting for the time. And we certainly know Disney and their writing "talent" can't, based on such hallmarks as the "High Republic" and a good chunk of their streaming productions. Before you go accusing others of having "nostalgia goggles" on about anything, maybe look back somewhat critically/honestly and understand that a HUGE amount of the characterization to the mains of the OT was inferred and agreed upon by the fanbase - it didn't occur in the films. And other than the other EU novels, there was little more than the basic Hero's Journey married with other minor plots to flesh out those characters by the time SoTE came out. Claiming that anyone's was "butchered" by one novel is therefore a hyperbolic load of hogwash. Probably steeped in third-wave radfem hand-wringing about "strong female characters" and vapid BS like the Bechdel Test. Regardless, you're judging the work through a modern lens, which is disingenuous and ignorant to say the very least. That goes doubly so for the game, considering it's a late 90s title that debuted at the nascent stage of the N64's release - when developers were still finding their legs AT ALL for producing 3D titles let alone ones that involved platforming, shooting, and doing much of anything besides being basic collect-a-thons. Again, applying modern standards in any sense is wholly unfair, uncharitable, and shows you have zero intellectual honesty on the subject. At the end of the day, the HR era is a steaming hot mess and so was Solo. Yet Disney's brilliant notion of "filling in" this period of the OT is to tie elements from both of those into it? Outstanding! No, I'll take SoTE with its flaws and anachronisms over outright terrible material that invariably leads to and justifies the even worse dumpster fire of the Sequels. "Family friendly" is also a bit of a joke. Xixor trying to drug and force himself on women is fairly tame compared to the very notion of child torture which featured in the Obi Wan series (do you really want to go into people "butchering" Leia's character, by the way?). Let's also not talk about the off-the-beaten-path snorefest known as Andor with its "dark, gritty, edgy" atmosphere and the sort of decidedly non-family friendly elements therein. Curious, what's been a standout game experience for SW since Disney took over? Other than Respawn's Jedi titles, which Survivor is docked points to some extent because they again couldn't resist tying in their pet project HR era into it, but the game was still quite good in spite of that. Not much after nearly a decade. There's an attempt to hype that Outlaws title, but it comes off as pure astro-turf and Massive would probably be better served doing Division 3 instead. As pulpy and janky as SoTE was - and it definitely was - it's still not nearly as bad as Disney's work. Not by a longshot. And these comics are literally just a lame attempt at "fixing" their shoddy storytelling by injecting random bits of BS from what they've conceived back into a continuity which it doesn't mesh with in any sense whatsoever. Honestly, I wouldn't say Mara Jade can't exist. We got Thrawn back from Legends, and we're gearing up to get a live action movie interpretation of the Thrawn Trilogy. Mara Jade still might work in canon as an Emperor's Hand (a title that we know is Canon, thanks to Star Wars Rebels). If she is brought into canon, she simply won't marry Luke. Something that George Lucas had been opposed to back in the Legends days anyway.

@@infinitesheldon5710 I agree, but one of the things I liked about her character arc was her going from The Emperor’s Hand to Luke’s friend, and then wife. It showed that he learned from the errors of the Jedi and allowed attachments, realizing that they actually made you stronger, and more stable rather than less so. It’s one of the reasons that Luke’s Jedi were more powerful than his predecessors in Legends.Her loss to his nephew would have gone a long way to understanding that bitter, angry version of Luke we got in the last Jedi. I waited 30 years to see Luke again,and Legends Luke would have been so much better. I know George didn’t like her character, but she made for excellent storytelling.

This video was about Luke's role in the comics. Rescuing Han was still a major through-arc of the entire comic run. Hell, there was a whole crossover event about the attempt to rescue him, War of the Bounty Hunters. And until the events of Dark Droids, it was believed that Jabba's fortress was too heavily guarded for the Rebels to make any play against Jabba to try and rescue Han. But after Dark Droids and the conclusion of the mainline Bounty Hunters comic (which ended with Valance destroying a powerful droid Jabba had employed in much the same capacity as the Rancor), the Rebels are now lined up to go rescue Han as we see in RotJ. And there's only 5 issues left of the comic before we reach that point in time.

@@user-otzlixr To answer what they were waiting for in the comics, there were actually a lot of factors. Right now in the comics, for example, Lando is currently on trial for treason against the Rebellion, having given a top secret rebel asset to Jabba the Hutt (it's kind of a whole story arc, so I'm not gonna get into all the details). So while Lando is on trial for betraying the Rebellion, of course Luke and Leia can't go rescue Han. Because Lando was one of their key infiltrators into Jabba's palace as seen in the movie. Luke and Leia are also bogged down by responsibilities to the Rebellion and planning the attack on the second Death Star, which naturally takes priority over rescuing someone who was explicitly planning on leaving the Rebellion before he was frozen in carbonite.

Fun fact, the yellow lightsaber was a thing in the old Legends days as well. The original Marvel comic run (responsible for giving us standout characters like Valance or Lumiya) had Luke wielding a yellow lightsaber between the events of ESB and RotJ.

Luke was in dagobah with yoda for a while. It wasn’t just a day lol and luke “struggling to lift a rock” was towards the beginning of his time with yoda. Yoda was teaching him patience and control in those moments and which is why Luke was struggling especially at first. The tie feat is way different it’s pretty obvious that in that instance luke was full of rage and stress and let all a lot of power simultaneously.
